    The Gandhi salad
    Rebecca C.

    It was wonderful to find healthy fruits and vegetables on a cross country drive. My daughter and I were passing through Beaumont and checked Yelp for some healthy food options. The Gandhi salad is yummy with cucumbers, butternut squash, cucumbers, strawberries and blueberries piled on top of fresh lettuce.

    I loved everything about this place. Just not the price. No matter how good or healthy the sandwiches/salad could be, it just didn't cut out to be the price they put out to be. The sandwich that my bf got tasted flavorful up until the last bite. I can understand it costing $11 or so much because it is a sandwich made by an American which was also made from a bigger french bread than your average banh mi and it came with a bed of french fries. The salad that I got, however, was all drenched in dressing and toppings. It barely had no salad. Don't get me wrong, I loved everything about the salad to the taste of its dressing but I didn't think all that was worth the $14 I paid for. I can remember eating less than 10 romaine lettuce leaves out of my salad. Note: This place was very bias towards skin color in my opinion. The second we had sat down and was waiting for our food, we noticed that the chef (presumedly) was talking to a table with a older couple sitting next to us. When she (the chef) was done talking to them and was heading out, she didn't even bother to talk to us or ask us any questions but give me the stare... O__O;;

    Egg salad sandwich and farmer's salad

    Had a meeting in Beaumont and wanted to have a quick lunch prior to the meeting. I'm trying to eat in a healthier way and was looking for a place that served salads and other healthy options and found Monica's. Walked in to a charming spot in a small strip center. The young woman who was at the counter was incredibly friendly and had an excellent understanding of the menu and daily specials. I was surprised when I overheard her saying to a customer that this was her second week, I thought she might have been the owner! On her recommendation I had the daily special of an egg salad sandwich and farmer's salad. It was a spot on suggestion! The sandwich was on what looked and tasted like fresh homemade bread. The egg salad was delicious, with only enough mayo to keep the chunky chopped egg together. There wasn't any other ingredients to take away from the tasty eggs. The sandwich was topped with slivered radishes and fresh watercress that gave crunch and a bit of a peppery bite. The farmer's salad was no mere side, but an equal part of the lunch. Made with a melange of greens that included tender leaf lettuce, arugula, and more cress it was topped with feta and dried cranberries. I appreciated the fact that one of the other staff members asked me if I wanted the feta or not. The dressing was homemade and was a vinaigrette of olive oil, vinegar, mustard and maybe honey or agave - whatever it was, it was very tasty. I had the black passion tea to drink which was very good too. I also enjoyed the music. Classic Americana - Kris Kristofferson, Robert Earl Keen, Todd Snider, Steve Earle, etc. Nice charming spot. Open mainly for lunch but has "Thursday Dinners" that sound fun.

    Pork loin salad (front) with the "Gandhi" behind. As good as a lunch gets.

    Did lunch with Monica today, as spectacular as it gets. I had the pork loin and it was perfect. Monica is a flavor artist and I would love to see her on Chopped against NYC's finest--we've moved past Austin here. I did a somewhat intense session at HWC this morning and this dish was just what I needed--Monica does not skimp on portions. Flavor with crunch, sweet, sour and spicy elements, a hefty lean portion of meat and I had the avocado chaser on top to toss in that healthy fat. My wife ordered the 'Gandhi' and when it was served I called out the waiter because I thought it had a slice of bacon on it (old Bapu would not have approved) and it turned out to be a slice of fried cucumber! Since I was good this morning I splurged for the Chocolate Crème Brûlée. Just ethereal. Check out the photo.

    Monica Cobb's food is as good as it gets. Pioneering farm-to-table in Beaumont, her food is edible art. I make a point to visit Monica's in Beaumont for lunch. My favorite menu item is the lemongrass chicken bahnmon, but you can't go wrong with an apple salad bowl. Always order dessert. @setxfoodies

    I recommend looking at the specials. The food is good and fresh. I can tell that everything was made with care. You have to try it out! If you ask they can tell you where all the food was sourced from. The staff is nice and inviting. My burger and water was good. The water was infused with oranges. It was nice and refreshing. The sauce on my burger was great! Check out this cute local place. The decor alone will have you coming back.

    Elvis to go!
    Albert P.

    Update: 1 year later, it seemed much longer as I've been thinking about "The Elvis" ever since my first and just waiting for an excuse to pass back this way again. As good fortune would have it Hurricane Nate was heading straight for my Florida panhandle beach reservation and I thought it might be wise to go West instead young man. The moment I booked Plan B in Galveston I realized I'd have to go through Beaumont and if I timed it right, lunch... at MONICA'S!!!! I've never been happier to see a hurricane coming (hope my house is there when I return). But when life gives you lemons, make gourmet lemon ice is what I say. My memory of The Elvis was not exaggerated, I savored every bite. My wife had an amazing "Friday Bowl" beautifully packed with the glazed pork, fruit, "the usual suspect" batch of veggies as they call it, a farm fresh egg on top, and drizzled with a vinaigrette she couldn't stop commenting on. Upon leaving I mentioned to Monica herself that I'd been here 2 years ago (I was wrong) and had been thinking about that sandwich ever since. She expressed her appreciation and asked if I'd be willing to accept a take-home kit with 2 more sandwiches for later. I reflexively started to say "no thank you" out of a sense of conditioned politeness, but then thought about my new practice of "allowing" good things to come into my life (hard for most people including myself) and instead said "yes", "YES, thank you, that is such a nice offer, possibly one of the nicest ever" and she also threw in 2 bottles of wine to boot, gratis. (Now I don't want to cause a stampede for sweet Monica except for a stream of equally appreciative customers - and I know you won't go with the wrong idea) but I wanted to record this gesture for history as a testament to her genuine generosity and say that prior to this her sandwich held one of the top spots in my mind, and now she does as well as an extraordinary person that I'll never forget or stop talking about. (And I love to tell a good story).

    Monica's is a precious little restaurant with friendly staff and decadent menu. I had the Apple Chicken Salad, it was beyond delicious and covered my entire plate. Worth every penny!

As always, the restaurant was packed--which is always a great sign that something good is happening in that kitchen! My waitress, Bailey, was sweet, attentive, and very accommodating, making the experience even more enjoyable. I started with a cup of their famous tomato bisque, and let me just say... I simply cannot come here without ordering it. This heartwarming soup, made with slow-roasted tomatoes, shrimp stock, cream, and Creole seasoning, is rich, comforting, and truly soothing to the soul. It remains my absolute favorite--if you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it! For my entrée, I ordered the Avocado Multi-Grain Toast. It's a light and satisfying plate featuring mashed avocado spread over thinly sliced multi-grain bread, served with your choice of sausage or bacon, an egg cooked your way, and a fresh tomato and cucumber salad. Everything on the plate was well-prepared and very tasty. If I could make one small personal tweak, I would love to see this served on a thicker slice of buttery toasted sourdough, maybe with a sprinkle of feta on top. That's just my personal preference and how I enjoy my avocado toast--others may find this version just right as is! The search continues for my perfect avocado toast, but this was a delicious and enjoyable stop along the way. Happy Sunday, and keep sharing those amazing finds on Best Bites!

On my most recent visit, I sat at the bar and started with a Buffalo Trace bourbon while looking over the menu. The bartenders here are always attentive and welcoming; in fact, the bartender remembered me from previous visits, which speaks volumes about the level of service they provide. Dinner was a ribeye cooked medium-rare with asparagus, and it was exactly what a good steak should be: perfectly cooked, with great flavor, and served hot. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. I followed that with their lemon icebox dessert and a lemon drop, both excellent, and finished the evening with a Four Roses Small Batch Select for a nightcap. What really sets J Wilson's apart is the staff's consistency and professionalism. The bartenders, servers, and kitchen team all seem to work together smoothly and take pride in the experience they deliver. Even on a busy night, with spring break crowds and daylight saving time throwing schedules off, the service remained attentive, and the food came out exactly right. If you're looking for a reliable steakhouse in Beaumont with excellent steaks, a strong bourbon selection, and top-notch service, J Wilson's is hard to beat. Five stars. Always a great experience.

    Crockett Street Beaumont, TX…read more Normally you would not find me hanging out on Crockett Street in Beaumont, TX but like with everything, we have plans and life happens. After checking in at the hotel I ask what do folks do around here. They tell me I need to go to Crockett Street. Now before I open my mouth, all kind of thoughts race through my head, is it "Sonny" Crockett from Miami Vice, Davy Crockett the American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier and politician or just someone named Crockett who now has a street named after them. No matter why I just ask why should I go to Crockett Street? They explain it has some bars and night clubs, a large parking lot that hosts car shows and other events. It just so happens that they had a car show in town. Well not one to give up a good time to be had, I get my Cubans (cigars) and off to Crockett Street I go. They we right, large parking lots fill with over a 100 cars and a lot of motorcycles, food carts, music playing with all kind of folks enjoy it all. Something to be said about walking around looking at great looking cars, from old to new, muscle to mutts, having a beer in your hand and smoking a Cuban that makes this kind of time very enjoyable. So I was surprised that this all lined out and it was something I was not expecting. So if you find yourself in or near Beaumont, TX. Look to see if the Crockett Street has something going on. Even if they don't the few bars and clubs might warrant a visit. Remember to always drink responsibly Crazy Cuban Out
