Looking for a restaurant while staying at a nearby hotel, I was recommended Spank's. I gave it a try and so glad I did. The first thing I noticed was that the parking lot was full, so I parked in the back. I was seated right away and my server was there by the time I had a seat. When I tell you he was the perfect server, that's what I mean. Always handy, and right on time! He couldn't have been any better! The salad bar was fresh and delicious! Do you recall that small restaurant with pictures of Our Gang on it? Spanky, Darla, Buckwheat, Alfalfa, and Petey the dog hanging on the wall, in a homey setting with homestyle food? Well, this isn't it. That can be found in the redwoods 14 miles north of Santa Cruz CA, if the health dept goons haven't shut it down because the room doesn't allow for social distancing. I'm so relieved to have left the Fascist state of California. No, this Spanky's is a Bar & Grill that's been operating in Orange since 1989. And, just as Buckwheat in this area refers to a Zydeco accordion player, Spanky's refers to - well, I don't know, but this place is named after him. It looks like a bar & grill on the outside, and it's a little dark on the inside. But Spanky's is more restaurant than saloon. There is a saloon part on the right, but the restaurant part is on the left, and is indeed kid-friendly. But while Spanky's in Ben Lomond CA is more of a breakfast-lunch place, Spanky's in Orange TX is a lunch-dinner place. Burgers, chicken, seafood, salad bar, and TVs showing sports. In our room, decor included an ad for an old fight in Beaumont, guitar, football jersey, golf clubs, and a poster for . . . "Gone With The Wind"??? That's random. It was date night, and the Hunny had chicken and noodles. "I got this in other places, and it's in chicken strips, but this one is a big ol' piece of chicken on top of the linguine. But it's gooood." The slab was large, and she had a hard time getting it all down, there was so much food. My hickory burger had a half-pound patty, sauce baked in, crunchy bacon, onions, and shredded cheese inside a toasted bun. Nice! They also make their own potato chips, which are tasty enough to not need ketchup. Service was prompt and excellent. At the table next to us, one person had a problem with the order, and the manager took care of it right away. Now that 1989 is nearly ancient history, Spanky's can be considered a historic Orange restaurant. One that's survived recessions, changing trends, Hurricane Rita, and an attempt to implement tyranny on the country. One with comfort food in a comfortable building. My wife thought that it would be a good place for her mother and her mother's girlfriends to eat. Although these church ladies would need to get past the "bar & grill" part, they would love the food and the relaxed atmosphere. Decent food for a reasonable price. They serve you with fresh rolls and cinnamon butter when you sit down. Who doesn't love free bread? I ordered the Caesar salad with grilled chicken and it was good. My husband got the flook burger with fries which was MASSIVE. Literally the size of his head. We also had the fried pickles as an appetizer and the serving size was large enough for 3 people to share and then some. Our waitress was really sweet and very attentive as well. EXCELLENT food! We had the Ribeye steak and it was the best we have ever eaten! Better than Texas Roadhouse or Outback's! no kidding. Spanky's on 16th St. Orange, TX. Thursday, July 7, 2022 So, my best friend wanted a "greasy burger" so we decided to give Spanky's a try. We walk into the restaurant, with an empty tumbler open & shown so the young girls behind the counter knew I just want to keep my beer cold. Is there a problem? They said no. Later, they admitted they were underage and are not allowed to serve alcohol. I wouldn't have asked them to serve me beer! SIGH... Well, within seconds, I was told "you can't have the outside container in here". WHY? I asked. "It's the Law, TABC rules." ( I had eaten there numerous times before WITH my tumbler (Coyote grey with "Come and Take It".) This time it may've been a "trigger" because my tumbler was a bright yellow with the "Don't Tread on Me" segmented snake (the 13 original colonies). The scenario that ensued was surreal. By then, there were several manager looking women in the bar, demanding I not use the tumbler. I asked them to reference the Law they were so proud to enforce. Cold blank stares was their response. The bartender had already put a beer in a glass mug, I poured it into my tumbler to keep it cold. When it became clear we were not welcome there, I instructed the bartender to empty my tumbler, we paid $3 for the beer I didn't take a sip of, and walked out, NEVER to return again. FYI: The TABC is a commission, they don't/can't pass Laws, which is the done by the Legislature. If the TACB is "enforcing" it's regulations which are not under the color of Law, that's by definition tyranny. When the People stand up for their Freedoms & Liberties and oppose tyranny, this kind of treatment will end. Good Luck Spanky's, you will need it. read more

The name of the restaurant turned me off, but I kept an open mind and went with family! We were seated quickly but had to wait a short bit for service. Beer was cold, MIL enjoyed Chardonnay, cousin hAd a rum punch with very little punch (mostly rum)! Potato skins were great, rolls were okay but the butter was phenomenal, onion blossom was good! Salad bar was phenomenal!!!! Steak was a little over cooked but great flavor! Baked potatoes were cooked perfectly--not mushy and not hard! If you're in Orange, give them a try!
