"Simply Country" is not only the name of the restaurant, it's a description of the dining area.
Ron L.

I am not against franchises, but if you want to get a true feel of the neighborhood that you're in, the smaller restaurants offer that. And Simply Country, located at an East Texas crossroads where roughly 100 people live within a mile, offers what outsiders would consider a true Texas diner. "Smokey and the Bandit" lovers, think of the choke-and-puke where the Smokey ordered a Diablo Sandwich and unknowingly met up with the Bandit. If you're driving on 105 east of Cleveland, this is one of several small restaurants that look like a great place to eat, with homestyle food at a good price. We ate there on a Saturday afternoon on the way back from the Renaissance Festival, and mercy sakes alive, this was good! We all had chicken strips, and it had a good country taste and texture. A little on the dry side for me, but whatever. We didn't have pies, but we sat close to where they can be bought, and I can see someone using their meal as the appetizer and those tall sweet pies being the main course. Many sweet local girls working there, drawl and all, and they made sure we had a relaxing, happy time. More than enough signs with references to God on them to give the liberals hives. Restrooms are on the far east side, the sign is very hard to read, and several antiques in the small hallway where the restrooms are - a very nice touch! Cash preferred, an extra charge is put on the bill for using a card. Simply Country is certainly not a unique restaurant in the Lone Star State. They don't try to compete with anyone. They just offer very good homestyle grub at a price that won't hurt your wallet.

Country fried steak large

Best roadside stop ever! We happened upon this place on the way to see family. Food was excellent, service friendly, ambience interesting. I think we are headed back to get a whole pie. Still thinking about the amazing fresh baked pie smell. Large country fried steak was LARGE! Very crispy, well seasoned gravy and piping hot. The green beans and mashed potatoes were also well seasoned with great flavor. Mushroom burger was juicy, giant, and had great savory meaty flavor. Loaded high with mushrooms and meaty cheese, amazing. They kindly added lettuce and tomato for me, but it really didn't need it. Crinkle fries were crispy and hot. The things we didn't eat but could see were also very generous portions at reasonable prices. A one trip salad bar only $4.99 for whatever you can fit on your plate. Bar included some pasta and potato salad options and could really make a full meal. Catfish special of the day was gently fried fish with fries and another side plus a serving of chocolate pie. Lots of locals ordered that with no hesitation and I'd regret not ordering it too- but my burger was damn good. Ambience is fun- country kitchen themed with lots of signs and funny sayings. Original cook books on some country style hutches in the corner, wooden chairs and tables that are sturdy, and farmhouse staples like a butter churn decorated the dining room. Pie case was full of so many options. We should have gotten a pie to take with us. I'm going back for that pie. There was a dining room facing section of the kitchen where you could see the pie construction happening. I've never seen such a high, beautifully twisted meringue. Okay maybe we are going back for two pies...

Very good!! Delicious home-cooked, comfort food!!! The gumbo is one of the BEST we have had! Hush puppies are soo good! Lots of pies to choose from as well. Everyone is so friendly. We recommend!!

Very good food and service nothing has ever gone wrong every time I have ate here very good food

Can't say enough about how amazing this place is. I have eaten here many times over the years and I feel like the food and service get better each and every time I go. The friendly staff, large variety of classic southern foods, and extensive selection of homemade pies, cakes, and pastries are all a part of what makes this place so elite. If anyone is looking for the best country kitchen type restaurant and bakery for either breakfast, lunch, or dinner that Texas has to offer then this place is exactly what they are needing. This place is becoming more popular by the minute. People come from all over Texas to eat at this cafe. I would highly recommend to anyone. If you stop by do NOT forget to order some of their famous pie! Also, if anyone is wanting to switch things up and have someone else cook their dinner/dessert for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, you can place an order with Simply Country and pick up your food before the holidays. Holiday orders include everything from the list of pies to entire meals for your family.

Poor Boy's Breakfast!!

Simply Country is simply amazing. We frequent this restaurant for breakfast when heading out. They have great biscuits and gravy and omelets. I like the flapjack and bacon on the poor man's breakfast. If you're wanting a steak, come here!! They are delicious and cooked perfectly to order! I have never tried anything here I haven't enjoyed! Worth the drive down 105!!

Also, the customer service is phenomenal.! everyone that works here treat you like family and super nice to you. I am so glad I stopped in today. I love how they keep the place super cold in the summer because it gets real hot in Texas. Food: this is some of the best food I've had in a long time. The beef tips remind me of a lot of Burt's , meat bar in Houston, Texas, who shut down right after Covid. The beef tips over white rice is amazing. So tender and so good my God how can you make food this amazing? The macaroni and cheese is phenomenal as well. So were the candy yams. The cornbread is great. The gravy that goes over the beef tips is simply the best. The hamburger steak is full of flavor as well. Once again, this is some of the best soul Food I've had in a long time. "I need to eat here some time." I kept saying that every time I crossed the railroad track on the…read moreway to the government offices. Real Southern Cooking appeared to be the tiny self-proprietor choke-and-puke that I love. Well, I tried it today. The Hunny and I have been married for 21 years, and between all of the choices, this is the one where we went for our anniversary. Real Southern Cooking looks more cafe than restaurant. Not fancy at all, just a few tables in a small area. The entire menu fits on two 8.5x11 pieces of paper on the wall. It appeals to those who say "I just want good food at a low price" - um, like me. It felt down home, too. We were surprised to see a Hispanic mama & her son behind the counter; service with a smile. The black man I expected in the back was seated at a table, finishing his lunch, and he was not only informative about the spice on everything, but friendly after witnessing us praying before eating. Some utility workers came in too, "I wish I could order everything!" It appears to be a place with a daily clientele. We both had chicken: the Hunny, chicken spaghetti, me, fried chicken. She liked hers, but found it a little spicy, like the chef included Rotel Tomatoes in the sauce. I had three small pieces, and it reminded me of extra-crunchy skin at places like Krispy Krunchy Chicken. The meat was tender and not too hot. 2 sides are included, and the amount of red beans & rice I got was larger than a mere side. Real Southern Cooking is indeed one of those places that fits the Southern diner stereotype, including the good food at a low price. Not totally Texas, but totally Southern. If you're traveling on I-10, it is located downtown, a few miles off the freeway. A few more items on the menu would take it up to 5-star territory; as you see, many Yelpers have it there now. Enjoy it now, ya hear?

I had to go with the chicken & waffles because why not! And, was not disappointed at all. It was so much that I had it for lunch at work the next day! Everything has an extremely solid flavor and will definitely be coming back even if it is way out of our way! we honestly felt like both dishes could have come from one of those hole in the wall establishment in the French Quarter. We ended up not going because of the wait but I went back with a friend earlier today and it was REALLY good. Like insanely good. I got the Chicken and Gravy while my friend got the Chicken and Waffles and we both finished our plates cleanly. The service was slow, yes, but they were extremely nice and did have multiple prefaces regarding the wait time. The only I had food wise was that the candied sweet potatoes were a little too sweet for me (and trust me, I love myself some candied sweet potatoes) and I feel like the okra or another one of the sides would've been a better fit for me. The chicken I had was extremely tender and juicy, and the gravy had the perfect amount of sweet and salty where I just gobbled it down with everything. The vibe is nice and homey and overall this place was just great. It for sure isn't someplace you can rush through in 30 minutes, but that kinda adds to the experience that you get the minute you walk in.
