I honestly just could not get comfortable and kept waiting for the music top come one in order to end my experience. For the new comers the floating experience is a pretty unique one and def worth it if you are an experienced meditator. This was our first float. What a cool experience. The tanks were big enough to stand in and not confining at all. I had done an internet search before hand to know what to expect and I kept seeing these egg-like tanks.... The ones here were different..huge and comfortable. There was a shower right there and shampoo and conditioner as well as a robe and slippers. The staff was friendly and explained everything. I really enjoyed my experience at Float On. The staff are well-trained, experienced and the customer service is excellent. For a beginner I would say start with the Ocean tank - being said by someone who decided to jump right in and try the Void tank. I am someone who has a fear of closed, dark spaces, so I was antsy to try it, but I thought screw it - I have to try it - I paid for it - and I'm so glad I did it! It took about 1/3 of the time for me to settle in (and not hit any walls), but seriously, it broke my fear of dark spaces in one session! I became deeply relaxed and my body awareness was incredible . With ear plugs in, you really can hear everything in your body. From creaks to gurgles, but most amazingly, your breathe becomes so rhythmic and expansive. By about halfway through, I had the sense of twirling in circles, but what was more intense were the numerous muscle spasms my body was going through. There were moments of twitches in my legs, calves and even my neck! I felt a mild chillness, like an icy-hot pack, on my back and then the feeling of my spine lengthening - I felt so tall and stretched out in the tank! A few times I would tap a wall with my pinkie or toe, but it was gentle and didn't startle me. I do suggest that if you have long hair, wear it down or in a lose pony tail. I had mine up in a clip and I would get air bubbles through my hair every time I moved. But also, it's incredibly hard to get a tight pony tail out when your hair is covered in Epsom salt. Also, if you experience nausea while in the tank, it may be due to increased lymphatic movement in your body. The lymphatic system in our body is responsible for waste removal, fluid balance and immunity. Floating lets your body get to work removing waste in the system. When nausea occurs - focus on your breathing, but if it gets worse, get up slowly and open the door to the tank to get some fresher air. I left feeling like I had the best massage in my life - no pain - but airy and light. I slept really well that night as well and I know I'll be back for more. I think I'll get some bodywork done beforehand too for an even more relaxed experience. Also, the discounts and volunteer work they provide are perfect for people who are tight on cash. I definitely can't wait to go back! It was a really great experience. The workers are super passionate and friendly and actually took the time to explain everything to me so I knew what all the little things in the room were for and gave lots of good tips on how to float (and how to not get the water in your eyes and mouth!). I didn't have some spiritual breakthrough or anything, but I was able to relax for the first time in a long time and having 90 minutes of silence when you have a baby at home is pretty much heaven. My neck and shoulders felt great afterwards as well, which was nice since they are usually so tense. I think I will be doing this on a fairly regular basis just for some nice, quiet time to myself and the energizing feeling that sticks around for a while afterwards. I would definitely bring conditioner - I didn't even after reading these reviews because I don't use conditioner at home, but the saltwater leaves your hair's texture pretty gnarly and i would have liked to have some. read more

You, there! Float, here. I have nothing but great things to say about this place and the people who run it. They're all extremely knowledgeable and passionate about floating, and for good reason. At first it sounds unreasonable that you would/could enjoy spending 90 minutes in an enclosed dark space floating in 10 inches of salt water this much. You can, and you will, and the time will slip by in a stream of pleasant sighs. Also, they're more than happy to extend your time in the tank if there's no one scheduled after you. The in-tank experience varies, but one factor common to almost everyone is relaxation and unwinding. Once you come out of the tank there's a sense of renewal and freshness to all your experience. The sandwich I had post-float was a sandwich of the gods, though I honestly think that it had less to do with a miraculous sandwich and more to do with my taste buds enjoying a newfound clarity of sense. Also, you know those "colors" in the world--blues, greens, and what not? Pretty great, right? They're even better after a float. On a note related to customer service: I was recently on my way to a job interview when I had to deal with a printer from hell. You know the ones, the printers which just stop printing when you have anything of import to print. Ten articles explaining the sea-horse body shape, sure, no problem, Sir. One resume? Screw you buddy, error occurred. I was forced to impose on the fine people at Float On out of desperation, and they were nice enough to not only print my resume for me, no problem, but furthermore give me directions that helped me get to the interview on time despite my delay. I had a great floating experience today. I had been once before to a place in SF, but this was a better experience...mainly because of the Ocean Room tank that is tall. I experienced a little claustrophobia during my first float in a smaller tank, but this one was great. I was able to close the door and turn off the light, which made the experience much better. Plus the private room was really convenient. After I came out, I chilled and drew in their sketchbook for a while...that was nice. :) I will definitely be looking into getting a monthly membership. read more

It was a very clean & cool building, people were really nice but I wish you could make the water or room a tiny bit warmer. Once I stepped out I was shivering, but I am pretty sensitive to cold. This was my second time & there must have been something set incorrectly because the music that is supposed to "calmly" wake you was SO LOUD & it doesn't stop. I didn't know what was going on or if it was supposed to be so loud at the time, but it made me feel so panicked after total silence I rushed out & just rinsed off. There wasn't a control for the music in the room that I could see & I was completely un-relaxed the rest of the night & I couldn't get to sleep. Maybe it's just not for me but I would rather just have a massage or something. My husband liked it though & said he would do it again so I gave it 4 stars. read more

This is the third place I've tried floating in PDX, and I think it will be my forever-float home. Each room for floating is its own contained unit, including shower for privacy. Big points for hygiene and cleanliness. Ear plugs, towels, etc. are thoughtfully provided. It's warm and cozy, and staff were really nice. More mega-points for serenity; despite being right on Hawthorne I was never bothered by street noise. Floats done right! read more

My first float was with Float on back in 2011. It was one of the most relaxing and interesting experiences I have had. I have been a few times to Float On since, and have always appreciated the staff, the new developments of the shop, and the general care taken to ensure each float was what it needed to be. This last time I went, it was not. The tanks were the same, and fine. The staff were fine still as well. What wasn't fine were the subtle things that actually made floating an enjoyable experience, and what made Float On excellent--they are no longer. First off, they've replaced the nice warm colored nightlights that used to welcome you out of, and back into, the world with garish, harsh cool lights controlled by the front desk; blasting you with sight after having just come from almost absolute darkness after the float. Good choice there... The music that prompts you to come out was jarring as hell. What once was an easy tonal and appropriately easy instrumental music was replaced by techno beats set to neo-hippie BS. It used to be an easy interlude to reforming into your body. Now it's like a military wake up call, accosting you with every quick vibration of over done bass! I couldn't wait to get the f*** out the door once I got out of the tank because nothing about it was welcoming and I felt like my whole being was violated. "Oh come here and enjoy a nice relaxing 1.5 hours... now wake up, wash up, and get the F*** out of here! BAM BAM BAM..." Floats used to last for hours after I had one. I've never had one shocked out of me before. This was awful. It is the subtleties that make a place great. Float On has since removed the ones that made Float On great. I used to rave about this place. I won't be recommending Float On to anyone anytime soon. read more

AMAZING!! This place has a tea bar so you can relax before and after your Float. It's a great place to go if you're a first time floater. They have a wide variety of tanks to choose from and it feels very fancy. This is a wonderful place to visit if you're feeling stressed or have a creative block. I usually have bad neck pain and it's kinda sucky for the first ten minutes but eventually it helps with the pain and just relaxes your entire body. I also have bad anxiety and floating mellows it out. I always come out feeling like a new person. read more

It could have been great, but I wound up annoyed. I was too cold to stay in the tank, so I got out and took a hot shower to warm up after about a half hour. They'd told me on the phone that I didn't need to bring anything - and then had no blow dryer available for my hair! It was sleeting outside and really cold. This was supposed to be a winter treat to myself, and if they ever get their act together it could be nice. Bummer. read more

I booked online two days in advance. Was really excited to try it out. Apparently there was a machine problem in another room and they cancelled on me. I guess someone tried to call me the morning of my appointment about it but I wasn't able to retrieve the voicemail they left, and I received no email that my appointment had been bumped. I biked all the way from where I was staying in Northeast only to have the attendant tell me that my appointment had been cancelled. They didn't offer me anything on the same day and gave me a list of times either super early in the morning or late at night that didn't work. I'm from out of town so that's why I booked early. Totally unacceptable. I'm extremely disappointed. Don't waste your time here. They don't seem like they have it together. read more

Fantastic. I've always sort of passively been interested in trying a floatation tank, but it wasn't until I found a groupon deal ($20 for a 90 minute session) that I acted on my interest. I'm really impressed with the experience. Five hours later I still have a calm, warm and fuzzy feeling in my core. I'll definitely go again, I could easily see making this a once a month indulgence. It wasn't weird or scary at all. Next time, I want to try getting a massage just before floating -- yum! The two owners/attendants I met seemed like really neat people, very friendly and glad to answer any questions or do whatever they could to help ensure a positive time. These are the kind of small business owners who obviously "get it" and I will be glad to see them succeed. read more

I'm definitely coming back! At first I was a little hesitant about being isolated from the world in a tank for 90 minutes and I wasn't sure if I would feel claustrophobic in the tank. For the first 30 minutes I was in the tank, I felt really uncomfortable. I wasn't sure if I should put my hands down by my side, above my head, under my head, or across my chest. I kept on trying to find a good floating position. Then I started to feel warm and decided to crack open the door to the tank. But the draft from outside soon made me cold and I decided to close the door again. I went from opening and closing the tank door a few times before actually deciding that I much rather breathe in stale air than be cold. At this point, I wasn't quite sure if I was going to walk away enjoying this experience. I told myself to ignore the distractions and just float. Before I knew it, the 90 min music started playing. I felt as though I was awaken by the music but I'm not 100% sure if I was actually asleep or not. My mind started grasping back to reality and I felt extremely relaxed. In fact, I can't remember the last time I felt this way. My mind and body had reset itself and the tension in my shoulders and back had disappeared. I didn't find myself or come to some kind of life epiphany while I was floating. I definitely didn't think I'll experience that on my first float. I did however sleep extremely well on the night of my float! read more

I visited here for the first time on my birthday, and it was great! The staff are awesome, the whole place is clean and tastefully decorated, and I have no complaints. The floating experience was good, minus my overactive mind (was reading sinister fantasy/scifi) and overactive limbs -- slight struggle to turn those off :-) I was in the ocean room (room 2) with the twinkling starlights. The staff member who intro'd me and my pardnah to our float rooms gave good advice, like really wiping down your face post-shower pre-float so you don't have the urge to touch your face and get saltwater in your eyes. Small tips like that are huge in customer service! I had an excellent time floating, as did my partner. If nothing else, you will likely find it relaxing, and appreciate the sensation of floating with ease. I will return! read more

The float was fine (honestly not my cup of tea... i kept waiting for it to be over) but what REALLY irked me was the service from one of the older guys that worked there. I happened to get the ear plugs lodged into my ears and he offered ZERO help when I told him the problem. I was in extreme discomfort from an item they suggested I use and he just gave me blank stares and told me he couldnt help. The staff is super friendly and professional and very informative. I really enjoy coming here. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The rooms are quiet, clean, and private. I don't much care for the oasis tanks (the "pods") but the ocean room is perfect for me. I went for a 2.5 hour late night float last night. When I went into my room, the pump was cycling, still filling the tank. I hopped into the tank before it finished so I didn't realize the music (that they play at the end of your float to let you know your time is up) was still on from the last appointment. After the pump shut off and I realized the music was on, I floated there a while, hoping they'd figure it out. They didn't. After 15 minutes, I got out of the tank and somehow managed (despite having saltwater in my eyes - ouch) to get a hold of my husband who called and asked them to turn off the music. They were very apologetic and they comped me a free 2.5 hour float to use later for the inconvenience. A great way to disconnect and relax. Would go a couple of times a week if I could. Will be back in the very near future. Try to avoid getting the water in your eyes (it stings) or your mouth (awful). read more
