Had a gyros yesterday I was so disappointed they used to be so good the meat was cut like an inch thick it was awful

I went to Flip's last night because I had a busy day and needed something for dinner. I decided on chicken fingers. There is a Canes chicken place near here and a KFC, but I chose Flip's because I wanted to support local business. I was treated very rudely and when I tried to cancel my order {so I could go somewhere else) they gave me a seriously hard time to get my money back. I will never go in this place again. I implore you to go to almost any other fast-food place. It is bad enough when it is just the food, but here it is the manager "Ron's" attitude as well. My wife and I decided to try the place. We did not order anything special. I had the gyros plate. I asked for my French fries well done and the dressing on the side. My wife had the basic chicken dinner with the same requests. My Gyros plate came with the salad pack inside the same hot container as the fries and sandwich. (hot salad YUM!) My fries were as close to raw was I have ever had served to me. To top that off, no Tzatziki sauce ;-( . My wife's chicken did not have a salad at all, and she described her fries as mush with chicken juice. It was literally the worst and I had ever had I was so disappointed. I called the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager. When he got on, I tried to tell him what was wrong with my order, but it was obvious he was not listening. He then handed the phone to an employee and said, "Get rid of this". Because he could not have cared less. All this could have been avoided with a little bit of care and about 5 cents worth of additional packaging. But no one cares. This review which when I get done you will find everywhere, could have been avoided with a bit of civility and an acknowledgment of a mistake. There is nothing special about this place and since the manager doesn't seem to care I suggest taking your business to an Owner/ Store / Manager that cares. read more

Mediocre. Pulled into buona beef and saw they didn't even open yet (grand opening later thing month). Seeing this little place across the street I figured - why would buona beef open up a location here if there's Italian beef across the street? Hmmmm Asked the cashier if I should go for the Italian beef or the Philly cheesesteak and she said doesn't like Italian beef and really likes the cheesesteak so I got that with a fries and a drink. A little over 10$ for a cheesesteak with fries and a drink - thinking ok, I'll support this small establishment. Expecting a fat juicy sandwich I unwrap what is essentially a hoagie stuffed with fat. Chunks of meat that you cannot chew through. I tried. Kept having to spit out pieces because I don't wanna swallow a chunk of fat the size of a gum ball every time I take a bite. Meh, the fries were good. Unsatisfied I felt compelled to let others know... my guess? This place will he closed within a year the moment buona beef opens.... 10$ for this junk? Nah fam. read more

Here is another spot that I have driven by a thousand and one times. I found myself in the area again and I thought it was the perfect time for a hot dog so I stopped in. This place is similar to many hot dog / sandwich stands scattered throughout the city and surrounding burbs. The menu here is quite extensive with all sorts of sandwiches and other items for purchase. My order was pretty simple. A hot dog with everything and a root beer. No fries for me and it cost exactly 3.50, not bad. The hot dog was a nice version, everything was fresh, all the condiments on a fully loaded Chicago dog dragged through the garden. Was this a destination spot? Not for me, but it was a nice solid version of a Chicago dog that I enjoyed and wouldn't hesitate to order again if I am in the vicinity. Cheers to All read more

Love it, love it, love it! Short and sweet: these people know how to make Greek food. I went there looking for just ANYTHING to eat.... I was mind blown by the myriad of choices and the taste of served dishes. The place is cheap and it appears slightly sketchy on the outside. To celebrate my one year anniversary of being on Yelp I decided to do a review update for a place that I reviewed one year ago today. On my very first day on Yelp I put up a whole bunch of reviews from collected notes of visiting hot dog stands throughout Chicagoland. One of them was Flips Beef & Hot Dogs in Glen Ellyn. Since I put up that initial review the way I've been writing has changed, and I figured this would be a good place to revisit and see if the food quality had improved since my first review and to provide a more in depth analysis of the food. First off let me go over the establishment itself, Flips is a small little restaurant with a few tables set up on the inside. There are a few TVs so customers can watch ESPN while eating, and for when the weather is nice some outside tables with umbrellas. There's also a ledge with stools set up to eat at right across from the main order counter. The main order counter is where you can see the menu board, and place your order, and even see your food prepared if you're so inclined. In visiting Flips again I decided to go for a hot dog and fries. The hot dog I received on my most recent visit came on a somewhat dry non-poppy seed bun. There was a pickle spear on it that was fairly thick though not particularly sour. There were two somewhat wet and mushy tomato slices on the dog along with two sport peppers that combined in length were not long enough to cover the entire hot dog itself. This meant that I didn't get sport pepper flavor in every bite. There was a decent amount of mustard on this dog, the onion and relish were a little light. The sausage itself was a skinless frank, it was well heated. The overall taste was decent but the bun was dry and the tomato and pickle flavor really overpowered the rest of the balanced. I wound up having to take those two items off to finish the second half of the dog. I also decided to go for some fries here, they have thick and greasy fries. On the positive side, they're very crisp on the outside with a nice potato paste inside. On the negative side they are super salty and greasy. Ketchup almost has to be used to sweeten up the incredibly potency of the salting of these fries. Overall my experience with Flip's left me feeling it's still slightly below average. The time to get my food was more than one might expect, and the food was a little below average. I've had some other items here over the years such as burgers, gyros and chicken sandwiches, but I haven't had them recently enough to detail my experience properly to incorporate into this review. I'm going to stick with my original rating of two stars, but it's possible a second updated review may come along at some point touching on the gyros, subs or something else there. read more

Read JPP review below and I will second that, he was just to generous. Only difference is I got the combo and the Italian sausage was the only thing that saved the homemade beef to add any flavor. I hadn't eaten here since the 70's. I think going away from Scala's beef was a way to control food cost but it just doesn't taste how I remember it. Food both fries and combo came out SUPER hot so little chance of any foodborne illness here. I wanted to try the saganaki squares but wasn't that hungry. Plus an abundance of salt on fries kept me from eating many as my sodium levels probably went through the roof. The air conditioning is clearly failing as it was over 80 degrees inside on a 89 degree day. Very nice people here and I want to like them more. At least they are getting an award from Vienna next week. Maybe I should have just gotten a dog. So my area rankings still have Portillo's #1 and Little Joe's in Countryside a close second. read more

We stopped in to Flips for a quick lunch and it was about what we expected - nothing fancy, a typical one-stop-hot dog-and-burger-plus-lots-of-other-things place - and we had a decent meal. Since it was our first time, and I hadn't had a gyro in a while, I had a gyro + fries and drink. We also had the saganaki haha. Everything tasted good and seemed to be made fresh. On top of that the people were very nice! They have a decent amount of seating, plus some outdoor tables for nice days, and the prices are not too bad at all. All in all this is a pretty average place: average food (pretty tasty, nothing amazing), average prices, average decor, etc. I'd come back again, but I'm going to explore other places first. read more

I knew this place when it used to Rock & Roll...a small beef shack with a focus on food and less emphasis on tables with sun umbrellas on a patio. The footprint has been enlarged with a new face lift. It actually has that "remodeled" look and less authentic. I ordered a Beef "dipped" to test the waters. Upon delivery, the weight of the Beef was heavy as hell. The sandwich was jam-packed with beef and gravy to the point that the bread literally was screaming for help! I needed a "Bib" for this one. A lot of gravy ended up on my sweatshirt. The sandwich itself was a hefty representation by volume, however the gravy was the epitome of mediocrity. In my opinion, the gravy has no flavor. First time going to Flips and OMG! I ordered the Gyro and the cashier was super cool and recommended a habanero sauce that goes good with it. He was right it's amazing. Food is fresh and trust me they don't cheap you out on the meat. Fries are hot and crispy too. Love this place. The workers all have great customer service. Definitely coming back. read more

I came here for the Gyros and was very pleased with what I got! I ordered the #6 meal, which comes with a large plate of gyros on a pita, along with a generous helping of fries and a drink. The gyros were good and the fries were just how I like them (hot and fresh)! Very friendly staff as well. Will definitely have no problem coming back for the gyros here! Did try the saganaki squares, but was not overly impressed...I'm just used to flaming saganaki so I have overly high standards. Some people may love these, I'm just spoiled. They do taste good, but I like my cheese more melted, that's all. I found this place by typing in "best gyros" in Yelp as my boyfriend and I were driving around....this is the top place that came up! Very good food so I told my parents to go there they got there at 7pm yesterday food took 20 minutes and they started to eat. A male approached them while eating and told them he's locking the doors and turning off the lights. It was 7:45 and they were almost done eating. I think that that is absolutely unexceptionable. If you don't want people eating in there after 7 they should tell them instead of rudely telling them that The restaurant was closing at 7:45 and they don't close until eight. read more

For a place with beef in its title, i was a little underwhelmed.The beef was just average, not bad but definitely not exceptional. Fries were really good. My son enjoyed his hot dog. After I sat down I went back up to the middle aged guy that was preparing the food and asked for hot sauce. He told me it was 50 cents...really??? For some sauce??? After I spent $15 on lunch? Two stars for the hot dog and fries. I've had it four or five times now and not sure why I keep ordering it. It's consistently mediocre. A limp, skinless Vienna wiener nestled in a plain, tasteless bun. "Everything" includes mustard, relish, onions, two tomato slices and a couple of sport peppers. Of all of the mentioned accoutrements, the sport peppers have the most flavor. This is just an average hot dog on its best day. The fries are starch tablets with no flavor. Other menu items at Flip's are actually pretty good like the gyros. Steer clear of the hot dogs. read more

FREE GYRO DAY!!! I've been to Flip's before and I've had their gyros so I was delighted to learn that they were one of the locations participating in FREE GYRO DAY!!! I was also equally as excited to try the dreamsicle shake which I learned was available from my lil sister. What better way to round out this healthful meal, right? I arrived at Flip's shortly after 8PM. I decided to hit up some zumba before packing on those calories for FREE GYRO DAY! To my surprise, Flip's was still pretty hoppin. I only had to wait about 15 minutes or so. The gyro was still a greasy delight. Flip's didn't skimp out on da meat either. The shake was a delight and I was thankful that my sister tipped me off to it. I'm sure this place was a mad house all day long yet the staff was still courteous and happy to take your oder. Had the Italian Beef today, actually the combo, but I took the sausage off and had a couple small bites of it individually since it wasn't that good and didn't want to ruin the beef. The beef is definitely not a hidden gem like someone else said, but a little above average. Not even close to being as good as Johhnie's, Portillo's, or Mr. Beef. I guess some people can't tell the difference between a good Italian Beef sandwich and a great/amazing one, or they own the place and are lying to get business. I might be back to try other items on the menu, but I'm not in a hurry. I hope I just forget about this place. The Gyro sounds good from reviews, but the beef sounded great in many reviews also. There are 2 different listings for this business. I think the other listing has more accurate reviews. This listing has too many people commenting on how good the Italian Beef is. The other listing talks mainly about the Gyro's. I'll try the Gyro someday. My Top 5 Italian Beef Sandwiches: 1. Mr. Beef & Pizza (Harlem and Irving) 2. Mr. Beef (Orleans Street in downtown Chicago, not related to Mr. Beef & Pizza from my knowledge.) 3. Johnnie's (Elmwood park, Arlington Heights) 4. Portillo's (Great flavor, but I don't like the aftertaste, something about it, has slowly been making it's way down my list) 5. Al's Beef (It keeps growing on me every time I have it. I did not like it the first time because it was different.) Consolation Prizes: These places all have above average beef sandwiches in my mind. I will list as many as I can remember.
