I have a 50-yr old Deodar pine that I thought needed trimming and a 30-yr old row of Cypresses battered by windstorms. My neighbor has used Ray for years. He was very honest: my pine was fine--did not need thinning yet. For the cypresses, he personally supervised a team of two very polite and able guys who got it just right-- they looked beautiful. And Ray added a feeding when I asked. Flintridge won't be the cheapest bid. But if you are a steward to old trees on your property you don't want to risk it with just anyone. Oak tree care is expensive and this is the second time in three years we've had to trim the tree because branches were over our roof and our neighbor's roof. I was told by the certified arborist (Randy) that his guys had done this for years and not to worry. that signs of a distressed tree was sapping - well, guess what... sap! and branches dying. We recently had our large live oak significantly trimmed by Flintridge Tree Care, and their service and care were excellent. Ray and his crew of five were very professional, concise, and well-coordinated. The crew worked well together, with everyone doing a specific task, and yet pitching in as need be. The lead cutter climbed to the very top of the sprawling oak and very skillfully and intuitively trimmed each branch in his path with the fervor and sensitivity of Michelangelo. Quite a feat, especially in 90+ degree weather. We also had them reserve a portion of the mulch to use as ground cover and fertilizer-- no prob. They even scooped it for us. Manager Ray was on property at the initial consultation, and at the start and finish of the job. He answered all questions and said "yes" to everything we wanted done, including a little work on some side trees. We worked with this company before, when they were known as Steven's Tree Service, but it had been several years. This year they took care of my olive tree, a bunch of overgrown palms and giant bird of paradise, and a way overgrown ficus in my back yard. Called them out for removal of a dead tree that dropped a branch on our garage, immediately quoted us twice what everyone else is charging and then called the city to pull a permit IN OUR NAME WITHOUT US HAVING SIGNED A CONTRACT. Our trees were long overdue for trimming. They showed up with a big crew and were incredibly careful to protect my vegetable garden and aboveground sprinklers. They did a great job in particular with a raggedy eucalyptus which now looks like a tree from a painting. Highly recommend. read more

Be aware of this company! I had an estimate from Tim and was told to call the office to schedule an appointment for tree trimming. When I called, Steve asked me to choose a date for the crew to come in. On the day (today) the crew was supposed to show up, Steve called me from a "No Caller ID" number to tell me that they were very busy and didn't have time to do my job, and thus I should get someone else to do the work. Unfortunately, the gentleman that I use for my tree service has sold their business and moving on to bigger and better things. I found this company online as it was convenient! There is a reason there is only 2 reviews for the company, because no one wants to use their services! Smart! I am a normal consumer, I dont often complain about services that are sub par, but for this company, I am making an exception. The company arrived at my house on time and began work trimming a few trees in my yard. I went inside my house and made breakfast. I come out a little while later and see the gentleman throw wood onto the top of their truck to load the "cargo", they also set cones a few feet away from the vehicle so a few debris would not damage other vehicles passing by. I went across the street to talk to my neighbor when I SAW a vehicle pass by, the worker who had thrown a piece of wood onto the truck missed and the tree "limb" fell right in front of the vehicle. The car pulled over and the workers had the gall to say that it was already in the road and the driver should have avoided the wood piece. I WAS RIGHT THERE, I saw the limb fall down right in front of the vehicle that was passing by. I called Randy, the Arborist, and advised him what had happened. I left a message requesting a call back to provide the driver the general liability insurance contact information. NO CALL BACK. After the fiasco, the workers continued to clean my yard. When they had finished I found a few wood statues that were broken, the workers stated they had not caused the damaged, I had advised the workers that the statutes were new, I had purchased them 2 weeks prior, AND I saw the statutes in tact that morning as I was admiring them as I was getting the morning paper. The company has denied any liability, therefore their insurance company is also denying liability. Do yourself a favor, spend 5 minutes more on research and look for another Arborist. read more

What should have been a simple tree/foundation report turned into headache that left me sour on this firm. - Scheduling, and the actual walk through were easy enough. This is why they get two stars. - No organization at the front desk. I called in about the status of the report about a week later, and gave them the property address, and their in house CL #. Nothing... They didn't know, and Michael, the guy who came out, wasn't in the office. - Payment - They don't list their address on the paper invoice, so I found their website and mailing address. Apparently the address listed on their "contact us" page is not in service anymore, so the check I sent to them, is now floating aimlessly around the greater los angeles area. When I called them to ask where my report was, they implied that the fault was mine for sending the check to an old address. After everything was said and done, it took nearly three weeks after the completion of the report to have it in hand. What a headache. read more

Sadly, the two positive reviews for Flintridge Tree Care involved removing a dead tree or pruning a crepe myrtle, resulting in 5 stars and an impression of expertise. NEVER call this company about an ancient coast live oak or other mature oak. Lance Henry at the company misleads customers into paying big bucks for center stripping their old oaks. Defoliating the center of a healthy, heritage oak is detrimental to the tree and Mr. Henry should know this as an arborist. He stated to me and others that there is no County oak tree ordinance in Altadena that restricts pruning of oaks, which is completely incorrect. Sending men with chainsaws up to defoliate an oak for money may avoid the oak ordinance restriction on cutting limbs greater than 2" in diameter; however, it still damages the healthy canopy of the oak. Many of these venerable trees that pre-date homes built next to them have been mutilated by so-called "maintenance pruning" and will never fully recover. If you have questions about an oak, contact a reputable oak tree consultant, not a so-called "tree care" company that only makes money if they heavily prune something. Ask about the oak ordinance before hiring anyone. If the tree dies as a result or falls, it is the homeowner, not the tree service, that is liable. The L. A. County Fire Dept. Forestry Division provides a list of oak tree consultants: http://fire.lacounty.gov/forestry/EnvironmentalReview_OakTreeContractors.asp We were pleased with Tucker's Tree Works (Vance Tucker), who is a noted oak consultant based in Cerritos, CA. Once mutilated or "poodle-ized," great trees older than all of us never really recover. Property values are increased by the presence of beautiful, mature trees. After contacting several tree pruning companies and receiving very poor responses, I was able to contact Steven's Tree Experts/Flintridge Tree Care. They actually showed up on time for the estimate. Without begging, they agreed to provide no parking signs. I decided to go with this company. They showed up on time, communicated prior to starting the actual job and then went to work. As they neared completion of the job, Randy showed up. He even offered to do a little trimming of an avocado tree. I'm sure our sycamores will look great once the leaves return. Three years ago when our oak tree was pruned, we could barely tell that it was trimmed. This time, it looked great. They had given me a price and advised that they would not ask for more.
