Beautiful trail up at Mt Charleston, less than an hour from Las Vegas. Great hike with gorgeous views. Highly recommend this one!

It's been a while since we'd done this hike. I didn't remember that it's an incline the whole way to the canyon. I didn't remember that there are a lot of slot canyons. I did remember that there is a bit of scrambling at the end, though, if you want to climb up on some of the rocks. I also remembered that this hike has some awesome tall trees and solitude. We were the only ones on the trail until we turned around and headed back to our car. I recommend this hike if you want some good cardio and slots-a-fun in the canyons. Just remember to wear hiking shoes or trail shoes with appropriate tread for the rocks on the trail; gloves might be handy, too, if you do scramble.

I would say that this is a great trail for beginners (like myself lol). I don't go hiking often, so this was a great trail to get used to. It's easy to find, and it gets a little steep as you continue on. I went with my friend a while back, but I feel confident that if I were to decide to go alone, it'd be fine. We made the most of it and took funny pictures. We actually hiked a little later in the evening, so we couldn't finish the trail because it got too dark, but it was fun!!

What a wonderful trail in Mt Charleston! Such a short drive from the city, away from the hustle and bustle. If you like hiking, and not up to a very steep hike, then this is perfect for you! It's comfortable for the whole family. Of course, don't bring stroller! Lol The trail is very easy to follow. Some areas have little challenge but not major. Just make sure to watch your steps. Outgrown tree roots can be dangerous if you don't watch. The trail follows the little creek (most of the time don't have any water in it) but still, it's not a good idea to walk in the creek bed. Lots of rocks and boulders there! During the walk, the scenery is beautiful! I really appreciate nature! I always take my time to stop and look around, look at the beautiful trees, bushes, plants, listen to birds, especially woodpeckers. About halfway through the hiking, there is another trail to the right. It's called the Eagle Nest Trail. That's a 1.8 miles (one way) hike, very uphill. Continue on Fletcher Canyon Trail, about almost at the end, when you really want to be, the best part to walk through a narrow canyon. The rock walls are very high and narrow. It's beautiful to get there and enjoy the hike! Make sure to bring plenty of drinking water, since there are none anywhere on the trail! There is a small parking lot for this Trail. Sometimes it can be very crowded, especially on the weekend. Also, there are restrooms available in the parking area.

Fletcher Canyon is an easy/moderate hike at Mount Charleston that is great to do in late spring when the snow is melting and coming down the canyon. This hike is about 4 miles round trip with only about 600 foot elevation gain. The trailhead is along SR 157, Kyle Canyon Road, about 5 miles before the end of the road at the lodge. There is adequate parking on the south side of the road, but this fills up fast on Saturday and Sunday, so if you're going to try this hike, get there early. The trail at the beginning is wide but it turns west into the canyon and it narrows. This is a pinyon and ponderosa pine area. After a short walk, you drop into the creek bed (this part is generally dry) and you continue up the canyon. The trail crosses the stream several times. If you hike this when there is water coming down from melting snow, you may have to walk in a higher area or just plan to get your boots wet. There's is a spring, and there's usually some water flowing here, but it's not enough to be a bother. After a mile and a quarter, the canyon narrows as you approach the end of the trail. Some of the side walls are 200 feet tall and it's often very cool in this area. You eventually get to Obstacle Rock. This is the place to do a bit of exploring and to have a snack before hiking back. There's a way to get beyond this giant boulder, but it's a lot easier coming down from above than trying to climb up the slippery rock. Retrace your steps to the car. This is a hike you'll want to do more than once. It's quite interesting to do this when there's snow on the trail.

Beautiful!! This 3-4 mile hike up and down the trail is a goodie. It's a moderate hike, there's a few decent inclines and slightly difficult footing in a couple areas, but worth it. There's trees and fresh air and I forget for a time that we were in LV desert 30 minutes before. There's a few places to sit down and rest or eat a snack, bring water as you will definitely feel the hike. It's a nice reprieve from the dusty, hot LV as it's usually 15 degrees or more cooler up in Mt Charleston. After the hike, stop by the Charleston Lodge for a gigantic soft pretzel or a beer. Or real food if you want. More great views and weekends there's usually a cool band playing.

I decided to take the hour drive from the Strip to do a little nature exploring. Fletcher Canyon's trailhead is on the right side of the 157 (just before the Visitor's Center) and there's a small parking area on the left side of the road for about 15 cars. Though the lot was mostly full on a Tuesday morning at 9a, the trail is long enough that you'll certainly get alone time on your hike. Signs indicate that Fletcher Canyon's out-and-back trail is 1.6 mi each way, but it's definitely longer so plan for about a 4.5 mi roundtrip. The terrain is rocky throughout - be prepared for some ankle rolling! Since I came on a whim, I was just wearing my running shoes but I recommend high-ankle hiking boots. The trail is an easy, very gradual uphill climb of about 1000ft, and there's plenty of shade throughout. Even though it's spring, there's no water running through this part of canyon at the moment. The only wildlife I noticed was a huge jackrabbit the size of a medium-sized dog - it totally took me by surprise! Being a Cali girl, I'm used to seeing our cute lil tiny wild bunnies, but this thing was like six times the size with massive tall ears. It hopped away too quickly for a photo, but it got me thinking about how big it's predators must be...

This trail is quite popular. After hiking up toward the slot canyon, our group of nine perched ourselves on the rocks to do a 15-20 minute chakra-cleansing meditation. It started out with thunderstorms but turned to sunshine later today. The hike begins at the Fletcher Canyon Trailhead on Kyle Canyon Road about a mile past the Spring Mountains NRA Visitor Center.  This trail starts off wide on a gradual incline toward the slot canyon. We came across a garden of beautiful flower called Queen Anne's lace. There is a light scrambling and eventually you will reach the first chokestone. EST DISTANCE: : 3.1 mi (Out & Back) ELEVATION GAIN: : 784 ft (Highest Elevation: ~7,770 ft) DIFFICULTY: Easy to Moderate. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Take 2 liters of water, snacks, water for your dog. Also sunblock, sunglasses and dress appropriately, be sure to bring a jacket in case of rain.

Fletcher Canyon Info... *1.90 miles to the end (about 4 miles round trip) *Steady incline from the trailhead to the end *Trail is clearly defined *Easy to moderate Fletcher Canyon is mostly uphill from the trailhead to the end. It's not steep, but it's steady. The path to the end is easy to follow with options to stay on the trail or hike through the wash when it's dry. Just be cautious if you decide to hike through the wash. Some rocks are slippery and it's very easy to twist an ankle if you're not watching your step. Most of the hike is shaded and cool. It also becomes cold when you're in between canyons. The hike dead ends at a big boulder named Obstacle Rock. Here is where you'll see the popular rock chute or water chute, depending on the season. This is the end and a great place to stop, take a break, and grab a quick snack like peanut butter. It took us about an hour to get to the end and about 40 minutes to get back to our car. Fletcher Canyon is a nice hike and I recommend it.

Great hiking spot with nice breeze! I wanted to take a break from the heavy commercial side of Las Vegas and decided to go for a hike. Since it is at the height of the summer, I was mindful to find a hiking area that is a little high up so it is not as hot and provides some nice breeze. The Fletcher Canyon trail took about 1 hour to get up and about 40 minutes to get down. As you go higher up, the trail becomes narrower and it becomes a wind tunnel, so hang on to your hat! The hike is beautiful but there are some areas where the rocks are very slippery and I also encountered falling rocks when I walked past a cliff. Overall, a nice getaway to see nature!

Great place to get lost in... There's something very special about this particular location for me and it reminds me very much of my childhood. Each year my parents would send me off to Wrightwood, CA for the best week of my childhood for many years. The pine aroma in the air does this to me every time. This trail is at an incline the entire time. You'll feel it afterwards. About 4 miles round trip, it takes you to a water chute (by no means a waterfall). The walk up and into the narrower part of the canyon is a lot of fun. Depending on which time of year you go, you may not be able to get to the very end. On my recent trip 3/18/17 we weren't able to get past all the high snow but hiking for just nearly 3 miles in was still very much worth it. The water was also fiercely running down the mountain and you'll be crossing the creek several times so plan to get a little wet. I also enjoyed the snow everywhere and would grab a handful each time I got hot and put some down my shirt. The perfect way to cool off! It was 87 degrees in Vegas and only 62 degrees up in the mountains. If you ever want to escape the heat, this is a great option as it's about 40 minutes away from Vegas. This trail is pet friendly.

Lots of bees on this trail

We got a late start on this hike last week, but still glad we completed it. Parking is somewhat of a challenge but we got lucky and nabbed a spot! Bathrooms right there too and the parking area is near a picnic site. Easy trail to follow and thank goodness we had some cloud cover on our way up. We encountered some people going up but the trail was not packed. Their were some families with small kids but they all turned around once the trail became a little more challenging. Good idea! Not a trail for lil ones. It is basically a little over 3.5 miles round trip. I would rate this trail moderate till the end when it becomes somewhat difficult. Lots of blooming desert flowers, bees, butterflies along the trail too which made it pretty and fun. As the canyon narrows, there is a little boulder climbing and a log to get over but easy enough. Once, we were hiking within the canyon walls, an immediate cool down. I just plastered my body against the walls and received a little outdoor a/c. It was really beautiful to be inside these walls and see all the flora and fauna that literally grows out of these walls. We stopped for lunch and there was no one up there but us for at least 30-45 minutes! We thought we had reached the end when we encountered a dry rock water bed. Turns out we had to do a little more climbing and maneuvering to finish out the trail. A little challenging and scary but we made it. I am sure this trail is even prettier in the early spring with the water flowing. The way down was fun and at one point my husband made a wrong turn and got off the trail. I yelled for him and got him back on track. You will find there are a couple of forks on the trail but it is easy to figure out which direction you need to go. As were making our way down, the trail was covered with all busy bees pollinating the flowers and woodpeckers going to town on the trees. My only gripe is that it really annoys me when people leave their trash behind on the trail or at the base of the trail. I always pick up any plastic bottles or cans and bring them with me as I live by the motto "Leave the trail as you found it". What a great way to spend what was a grueling Saturday in the valley in terms of temperature (112 degrees - Yikes!) but a beautiful day in the mountains. Love you Mt. Charleston!

This hike is my new absolute favorite hike. I will say that Mary Jane Falls has a better waterfall, but this hike kills it in every other capacity. The view are amazing. The hike itself is not hard but you definitely get a work out in. I think this hike is pretty good for all levels because you can go at your own speed and turn around early if you need. But I encourage you to go to the end - it's so worth it. there's a little water fall area and once you reach that you can also hike a little further to the right and there's a cool cave off in the distance. Also, for the adventurous types you can go under and through the water fall area up into a really cool section. This hike is awesome!! A must try for every hiker!! I can't wait to go back!!
