We had such a great adventure afternoon exploring the spring mountain ranch. Kiddo had ample space to run in the grass and then rest and learn in the visitors center. The short less than 10 min video and staff gave us q peak into the past as we explored and found items on the scavenger hunt. When we finished the scavenger hunt we got a ranger badge. Some items on the list are inside the visitors center, some are outside, and some you have to walk each trail to find the items and learn the history if the ranch. Bring a picnic and enjoy the outdoors with a free nevada state park pass from the library when available otherwise $10 a car entry for a beautiful afternoon well worth it.

Seriously every time we come here it's so peaceful so pretty this time there were some brown cows around and some wild donkeys. I love the trail. It's super cool. The downside about having a Doxy is when they see that donkey they wanna roll in it so they can mask their smell and sneak up on them. We truly do always have a nice walk though and beautiful views it's refreshing.

My friend invited me to go see a musical on a sat night , I had no idea this place was even here . It was absolutely beautiful , the concert area is a big scenic park with concession stands and food trucks every summer . We watched legally blonde, we had a blast the actors were amazing . Overall it was a fun idea for a girls night or dare night.

Im so glad someone told me about this park. It's absolutely beautiful. I wasn't prepared for hikes so im definitely coming back asap. I was in flip flops which isnt too hike friendly. BUT i did do one, i just had to take it easy and watch my steps. It has many smaller easier trails to hike, places to picnic, educational stops and lizards galore. There's absolutely no trash anywhere, no one around to bother you, its just peaceful. 100000 star review

Now that the weather is cooler decided come back and do a trail....some trails are guided by a ranger...but those are kind of rare but definitely worth signing up for on-line. Got to see wild burros and the resident cows.

Terrible experience with Ranger D. Low. Last Saturday, we briefly pulled over before entering the park to take some photos of the mountains-there were absolutely NO "No Stopping" or "No Parking" signs on our side of the road. Still, the ranger gave us a parking ticket. We even went back to record video proof that no signs were posted-and that clearly made him angry. After that, we stopped at the entrance to renew our annual pass. He followed us, asked the gate worker what we were doing, confirmed it was for the annual pass, allowed it to happen... then stopped us again afterward and gave us a 6-month trespassing ticket! This felt like a total abuse of power. Parking and trespassing citations should be reserved for clear violations, criminal behavior, or illegal activity-not for people peacefully enjoying nature. If anyone else has experienced something similar, I strongly encourage you to report Ranger D. Low: stparks@parks.nv.gov, crobinson@parks.nv.gov, jbrunjes@parks.nv.gov Let's speak up-this kind of treatment is unacceptable.

"Ranger" David Low likes to abuse his employment and deceive others.

I entered the park with a friend this morning to enjoy the park and take photos of our kids while we sat in the field. We brought some pumpkins and picnic blankets and our iphones. David Low comes up tells us "we're not in trouble and this day is a pass" but he needs our IDs. He is someone who abuses his taxpayer funded employment. Little did I know upon entering the park he will ask for your personal ID write it down and try to look you up on your personal social media accounts! He says he keeps excel spreadsheets of all these IDs and accounts on his computer! He says he will look you up in the future again to "check on you" if there's a photo of the park posted to give you a citation! He preys upon innocent unknowing people and stay at home moms who are just there with their kids to have fun and enjoy the "family friendly" park. He was rather unsettling and somewhat threatening even when we told him we don't have any camera equipment and are not here for advertising or selling photos. We feel judged by appearance and violated when he looked up our social media accounts bc he took our IDs and information! No where upon entering the park were we told this might happen to us in the parking lot! David low should be removed immediately. He's a terrible representative of this park because of his actions and abuse to the public.

Brought my husband and dog this morning for a break from the desert. Beautiful grassy areas with an incredible view. Perfect for family picnics or romantic picnic dates. I'd like to try watching a movie here (refer to website for details). They also hold Yoga events on the pasture, which looks awesome! The "museum" is very small walk through of the ranch house. Interesting nonetheless, with a cute gift shop. $5 bracelets, and I spent only $3.75 on a drink and snacks. PROS: -Grass lol -Great photo ops -Some small trails for light walking -Cows and horses -Huge area for kids and doggos to enjoy/play -Events CONS: -$15 for non-residents (to include military, its based on license plates). Military = $1 discount, so $14. -$10 for residents still feels a little steep for what it is. -Besides eat and chilling here, you aren't doing much else. If I come back, it will be for one of their events. Beautiful spot to hangout, but maybe not for $14.

Love this Place For hiking/walking trails Spring Mountain Ranch is a great choice and is close by to the west side of Vegas - Large complex surrounded by the beautiful Spring Mountains The hiking/walking trials are fairly easy about 1-1/2 mile round hike. Being there this year in early April was walking through a beautiful desert painting - new growth popping - water running in the creek. Pretty cool place to take some time for yourself, get outside with a moderate exercise and check out the beautiful Red Rock infused Spring Mountains Note: There is a Ranch House (once lived in by Howard Hughes) - it's set up as a museum along with a gift store -(they have cold drinks & snacks in the gift store) For me, it's a great place to drive out to - (nice ride passing Red Rock National Park) It's probably very hot during late spring through summer - I would suggest checking the weather & bring plenty of water Cheers

Absolutely beautiful! Honestly I love spring mountain more than red rock. I said what I said. In the summer they have programs for the kids as well as musicals. I got to go to Chicago the musical a few years ago. They have now finished the restoration of the lake for the pool fish. There's tons of interpretative signs as well as a historic home you can tour. It's 10$ for Nevada residents and 15$ for out of state. My only wish is that they had more trails and they they were longer.

    Historic Howard Hughes ranch

The ranch itself was owned by Howard Hughes but he never stayed there because his wife would never want to go. The ranch has beautiful views of the mountains and is well above the flood levels normally seen the area. Wild donkeys and horses are possble, as well as the protected desert tortoise, but none were seen during my visit. Since this is not a National Park, My wife's senior citizen lifelong National Parks Pass did not work, so we paid the $15 at the entrance. if you have kids, this would be a fun afternoon for the family.

Decided to head to spring Mountain ranch State Park on a Tuesday afternoon. Packed a picnic lunch, loaded up the dogs. What a great find. Loved the big grassy pastures/picnic area. The dogs loved it to. I spoke with one of the rangers and they said it stays green all year around because they water it. The park is just a little bit past the Red Rock Canyon loop drive. Not hard to find at all. We got there around noon. Not crowded but a few people with their fur babies (dogs allowed but must be kept on a 6' leash). Lots of concrete picnic tables that were clean . This park used to be a cattle ranch. The visitor center/ gift shop tells the history of the ranch. Gift shop is nothing to write home about but if you need a Coke or a bottle of water, head on up there. There are multiple trails, all under 2.0 miles. Some are as short as .3 miles. We went to the Overlook loop Trail and then wandered down to Lake Harriet which you cannot access( surrounded by fence). It was just so very pleasant, birds singing, blue skies, 72 degrees. Couldn't ask for a better or more relaxed afternoon.

Beautiful park with a nice expansive picnic area, a few short trails, and a ranch house you can see. $10 for a Nevada local (car) to get into. The reason for the 4 stars is this place is not what it used to be almost 10 years ago....a long time ago you could walk right next to all the water areas here; now, you cannot do that. Still beautiful. Hikes: there are 3 trails. All are short (under 2 miles) and are easy; great for families. I recommend the Ash Grove loop to see the plants and get closer to the creek. The lake Harriet trail is a must as well so you can get closer to the water and take in the beauty that surrounds you. The overlook trail is short yet gives you the best views in the park. I recommend exploring all trails here and then wrapping up your day here with a picnic. Place is dog friendly and my little dog loves the trails here.

There are a number of trails here, many made by mountain bikers who use the area for its challenging terrain. This hike can be made as hard or easy as you want. I make a long one out of it, but you could hike in a mile or so and then return to your car. It depends on your skill and the time you have. To get to the Cave Canyon Trail, drive past the entrance to the Visitor Center and Scenic Drive on Charleston Boulevard. About 1/2 mile beyond the entrance, there's a small parking area on the left side of the road where you go to ride horses with Cowboy Trail Rides. Park in this lot. From the lot, follow the dirt road as it heads toward a corral which usually has a good number of horses. At the corral, the road heads to your right. Keep following the road. You're going up the road that leads to the Cowboy Trail Rides area where they have their meals that come with certain rides. Just before the horse area, the trail goes off to your left and drops into a wash. There are a couple of ways you can get into the wash. It doesn't matter where just as long as you keep heading toward the two canyons in the distance. You will come to a fork in the trail as you look at the two canyons. Take the left fork. This is Cave Canyon. Follow the trail into Cave Canyon and enjoy the stunning limestone. If you stop and look at some of the boulders, you can see the fossilized imprints of clams that once lived on the bottom of the sea that was here. As you hike up this trail, you come to a dry waterfall. There are some boulders piled below to help you get up the 6 feet or so to get past the dry fall. If this looks too challenging, this would be a good place to turn around. For those with hiking skills, going beyond the dry fall begins a journey of following the canyon back and forth as it winds its way up Blue Diamond Hill. Eventually, you'll come to the overlook where below you is beautiful, Lady Las Vegas. It's a great sight to see our city stretched out below. On clear days, you can see Lake Mead but this is becoming rarer as the lake drops more and more. Retrace your steps and enjoy the many cacti, especially barrel cacti, that like the limestone of Blue Diamond Hill. If you go all the way to the overlook, the total distance will be about 6 miles. Here are some photos I took when I did this hike on December 29, 2009. If you have any questions about the hike, send me a message and I'll be glad to answer questions. Happy hiking!

Blue Diamond Hill is an extraordinary place off the beaten path in The Red Rock Canyon National…read moreConservation Area. Its open spaces, western landscape, and beauty has touched my heart. Unfortunately, when I recently hiked in its Cave Canyon Trail it destroyed my heart. Seeing the graffiti epidemic creates a wound that band aids and water can't cure. A precious area of Blue Diamond Hill with so much to give is being wasted away by graffiti. The graffiti is so bad that it is running out of giving. What a difference a couple of years makes. The last time I hiked in Cave Canyon, with the exception of the lower cave, the graffiti was as sparse as a Park Ranger patrolling Blue Diamond Hill. Now it is on the level of a barrier wall in a ghetto along some parts of the canyon. Where is paradise-turning-into the ghetto of Red Rock Canyon? Facing north, it is on the right (east) side of State Route 159 between the exit and entrance of the 13 Mile Scenic Drive. The Cowboy Trails parking lot is the trailhead. This is the same parking lot of the Las Vegas Overlook. The parking lot is small and unpaved. It fills up fast. When I hike up Blue Diamond Hill, I park in the paved Red Rock Canyon Overlook parking lot, then walk approximately 1/2 mile alongside State Route 159 to the trailhead. So, from the unpaved parking lot, you want to continue hiking on a dirt road past two horse corals. Compared to the graffiti ahead, the scenery of horses with Blue Diamond Hill in the background is a 4 star picture spot. The horseriders add to the western landscape. On this note, it amazes me that people complain that the horses are destroying the landscape when criminals are doing severe damage vandalizing it. Anyway, the dirt road stops at the second coral and narrows into foot/ equestrian trails. To aim for Cave Canyon you want to envision a clock. Cave Canyon will be toward the 11 'o' clock position. Now you want to follow the trail into the wash and toward the canyon that will be toward the 12 'o' clock position and not toward the right at the 3 'o' clock position. The trail passes on a covering of desert sprinkled with creosote, Joshua trees, and rocks. Unfortunately in mid-2014, graffiti is the landmark to the canyon portion. "Enoch" in large black letters welcomes the hiker. Whatever it means, "Enoch" would be a common sight along the uphill trail. Into the canyon, the trail ascends a hill to the right. It follows the mountain wall to the right and the view below to the left. Halfway to the right is a small cave. I posted a picture that shows how graffiti destroyed this cave. Bird&hike.com also shows the graffiti infestation. A short distance past the small cave, you will reach a wall of rocks. From this point forward, class three scrambling is required to reach the upper cave. Of course, graffiti is the landmark. The reward for all the graffiti on the way up is the breathtaking views of Red Rock Canyon on the hike down. From this angle, you could see a post card view of Red Rock Canyon. The funny thing about Cave Canyon is that the surrounding trails are still untouched beautiful western landscapes. With Cave Canyon on fire from graffiti, until the National Park Service attempts to control it; I highly recommend reaching the top of Blue Diamond Hill from the Las Vegas Overlook Trail or the Cowboy Trails system. In conclusion I give Cave Canyon 3 stars. The way I see it, somebody has to give something to this unloved place that wants to give some kind of love. Hopefully the National Park Service will give Cave Canyon back to health so that it can in turn give future generations uplifting experiences in the caves of Blue Diamond Hill.
