Last minute getaway trip with my bestie after New Years to Myrtle Beach simply because it was a good midway point for both of us. Brisk weather with a little drizzle so we didn't want to venture far from the hotel to grab a late lunch. Did a yelp search and up pops Flavor Hills! 200 feet from Hilton Ocean Enclave. Super excited because I've eaten at the one in Durham and it was fabulous. This one has a great location. Spacious. Two separate dining areas plus a heated and covered balcony with seating where you can not only see the ocean but almost taste the salt. Of course it's January so we were cozy inside. Beautiful decor. Full bar inside as well as one outside. Seating for large groups as well as smaller parties. Being the off season we were one of a few tables occupied and service was good. Beautiful artwork on the walls. Gender specified restrooms. Women's restroom had a baby changer and 4 stalls. Very clean. Nice size menu not overwhelming at all. Items were familiar but with unique twists. We were in heaven with the sweet potato cornbread. Appetizer but definitely shareable by 4. If you eat mostly plant based like me not a ton of options but good seafood options for the pescatarians out there. A little disappoint that the bang bang shrimp came with just 4 shrimp for $14. Presentation wonderful though, fresh and delicious. Shrimp and grits delicious. The dessert options are not your typical options. We decided on the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Phenomenal. I'm not even a vanilla ice cream person and even it was delicious! What I love about Flavor Hills is that you will always find items on their menu that you're not going to get everywhere. As common as peach cobbler is I've never tasted it like this. The brunch menu was served until 3 so unfortunately there were items on the dinner menu we wanted to try but couldn't. This was our first dining experience in Myrtle Beach, and I have never been so upset eating at a restaurant before. I'm posting this on every review platform I can because no one should waste their money here. And yes, I feel some type of way saying this about a Black-owned business, but if the business sucks, it sucks--and this place absolutely sucked. Red Flags from the Start * The restaurant isn't even listed with the other shops--just a tiny sign by the elevator. * We arrived at our table and it was dirty. * Our server never introduced herself. * It took 15 minutes to get two waters and one cocktail--even though the restaurant wasn't busy. Drinks Disaster I ordered "The Blacker the Berry" cocktail. I saw photos on Yelp--it's supposed to be dark with a lemon and blackberry. The drink I got was light, no garnish. Another couple came after us and received the correct version immediately. Only after I complained did another server fix it with a lemon--but still the wrong color. Food & Service Failures * It took over 30 minutes just to place our food order because our server disappeared. * Food finally arrived after 20 more minutes--cold, except the shrimp. * Guests who arrived 20-40 minutes after us got their meals before we did. * When asked by the server how everything was I mentioned the above. She asked if I wanted the manager. I said no--I was over it--but she brought him anyway. When he came over, I flatly told him, "No, we're good, thanks." He asked again, and I repeated, "NO, WE ARE GOOD, THANKS." That was the moment that pushed me from frustrated to downright pissed off. Other Problems * Water leaking from the ceiling at the entrance. * Food was bland and ridiculously overpriced. * Automatic 10% gratuity added without our server even mentioning it--I only overheard another table's checkout. * Final bill: $113 for one of the worst meals of my life. The Bottom Line This restaurant completely ruined what was supposed to be a special first-night birthday dinner for my fiancée. I have never left a restaurant so annoyed, upset, and frustrated. We made a group reservation and was told told 15minutes. When we all arrived we were told it would be an additional 30-55 minutes. We weren't offered refills on our waters. Going to Flavor Hills was a last minute decision and I am so glad we chose this location. I loved the artwork displayed within Flavor Hills. We chose to sit outside and soak up the sun and take in the views. We ordered mimosa flights, lemon pepper wings, soul rolls, and crab&collard dip. Ok, so they have a location in Raleigh that I have yet to try mainly due to bad reviews from people I know that have dined there. Reviews are mixed for the MB location as well but we decided to give it a try. After reviewing the menu we kind of had an idea of what we wanted to try. I was trying to make reservations online however it kept saying no reservations available within 2 hours of my selection. Which was strange bc I even moved the reservation time to almost 9pm and still received the same message. So, I decided to call in advance to see how long the wait was. The hostess said at the moment there wasn't a wait (strange again bc why it didn't let me make reservations) but she couldn't promise again by time we arrive. We arrived around 7:40pm and there wasn't a wait but the guy told us since we didn't have a reservation we would have to sit at the area across from the bar. It's not a bad area it's just the table is small bc it runs along the back of the restaurant, beautiful view of the pier though. Our server was very sweet and knowledgeable. She let us know up front it would be a wait bc the kitchen was behind so be patient. We understood but also expected hot and fresh food, which it didn't disappoint. We were actually full on appetizers and decided to share an entree, which we ended up taking all of it in a carry out. We ordered the soul rolls, crab & collard dip and rattlesnake pasta with shrimp. It's slow season at Myrtle beach which made this the perfect time to go eat out and we chose Flavor Hills. I loved the food it was more of a Cajun soul food vibe . I ordered the fried chicken breast I think it was honey heat and it came with collards I replaced yams with Mac n cheese. My guy loved his fried cat fish as well the grits taste really good it had a gravy on top. I also had a jalapeño peach margarita that was really good. The restaurant is extremely dark with not really eye catching aesthetics but outside has a nice photo/grass wall. Customer service was better once we were seated. I do feel like substitution of sides is overpriced and the portion to price ratio is not good on the appetizers. You get 4 bang bang shrimp, 3 green tomatoes or 6 small wings and they are overpriced. I ordered the hot honey chicken sandwich which was phenomenal and fair in price if you stick with fries but I asked to substitute the fries for Mac and the waiter said it would be $4 extra got my bill I asked to look at the itemization and it was $7 extra to sub to Mac and cheese and the portion wasn't even a full spoon full (it was stove top Mac and the baked a little cheese on top. The waitress brought me the buffalo fried chicken salad instead and I tasted it and it was really good. However, I was really craving jerk chicken. The salad was decent. Our family dinner here on New Year's Day started off a little wonky. We had reservations for 7:15pm. We arrived at 7:28pm. By the time we arrived at the host stand we were told that our reservation was cancelled due to their "15 min" grace period. We stared off with the salmon bites, shrimp, and collard/crab dip to start. The appetizers came out very quickly. And salmon bites were a bit over salted but still good. The shrimp was perfect. And the dip was good too just a little too cheesy for my liking. But over all, I would rate the apps 4.5/5 Now the dinner. I got the bayou catfish and a side of sweet potato cornbread. Overall I would come back. I'm impressed by the location and was thrilled by the fact that it is black owned. As far as I know, there are not a lot of them in Myrtle beach. This was a friends selection and it was far from meeting my expectations. After a 1 hour wait our spot on the waiting list was handed to another group and only free a brief complaint we were seated . This was the best food I had in Myrtle Beach, by far -- (although, sadly, most of the food in Myrtle Beach was terrible). Thankfully we got there early. We had a small wait while the staff cleared a recently vacated table, but we sat outside despite the heat. I watched one of the cleaning staff take his time really cleaning the table and I thought his attention to detail would reflect the quality of the food. And it did! The food was very good, though a little spicy. The collard greens have a kick. I ordered some chicken with maybe grits, and a mango salsa?? I don't remember exactly but I ate it all. I also ordered a cocktail which the server recommended and it was also very good, but not too strong. Not all the food came out together but overall it was a good experience. Music was good too. I highly recommend this restaurant if you have the opportunity to go, this is an excellent choice and you won't be disappointed, unless you hate spicy food. The only thing I would say is they maybe didn't have enough straight options, like not to spicy/over-spiced menu options. What started off as a questionable visit ended very well. It actually started off really well if I could be honest, our waitress was very polite and I wish I did catch her name, but I didn't. She was very attentive to a request and had a pleasant demeanor. Just a heads up they do automatically at 18% to each check however we still took our waitress in addition to that. However, to each their own. It's a very nice spot very clean and I'm gonna assume the bathrooms are nice too because the rest of my party got to use them even though I didn't and I didn't hear any complaints. The food was good, however to be honest, it did take over an hour of us being there before our food came out, I did ask to speak to the manager about it, and she was very attentive to my concerns and was very accepting of my constructive criticism. I would definitely come here and eat again and I'm looking forward to trying other dishes that they have on the menu. Today I had the catfish and it was very good. I recently visited Flavor Hills on 2/13 to celebrate my birthday with family and friends but unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. After going on a maze to actually find the restaurant since there wasn't a sign listing it from the road and searching for parking that did not charge, we were able to finally be seated. What we thought was going to be a turn up time, ended up being miserable. We should have known from the start that this was the wrong place because there were not many people inside. The music was played low, and we were asked to keep our noise level down because the 20 other people in the restaurant "did not have our same energy". The only worker there that seemed to have any type of vibe was RJ (the server assistant). Even he didn't feel comfortable working there. The drinks were overpriced and watered down. The appetizers were good and hit the spot. That is the only bright spot in this whole experience. The entrees came out, and the food was cold. We ordered apps for the table; soul rolls, fried green tomatoes & the crab and collards dip. We were so thrilled with everything! Will definitely be back! However, we understand this does not fall on the restaurant but it does affect the experience-- the public parking across the street is paid parking and if you are even a minute late you will be booted. We were booted within a couple of minutes of our expiration with a price tag of $125.00. Being locals, most of our public parking becomes free during the off season, but not here. This definitely put a damper on our afternoon at Flavor Hills but again, this is not the restaurant's fault. Don't judge a book by it's cover... We have spent the past week in Myrtle Beach and were looking for a place to celebrate my wife's birthday. Looking for something we could get a little dressed up for, and something that featured local cuisine, rather than the typical beach fare. We were seated at a low table around the back by the kitchen door, even though there weren't that many people there. We were seated by a very friendly host, and our server was super nice. Unfortunately when we tried to order we found a number of items on the menu we not available - including the chef's special menu selections, and they didn't get their beer delivery (?) So they had a very limited beer selection. We tried to look past all of these things and ordered our meal hoping the food would improve our mood. We opted for the cajun shrimp & grits, the catfish & grits, a 2 orders of the sweet heat plates. When the food arrived... WOW, complete transformation. It was elegantly presented, and was unbelieveably delicious. Everyone at the table loved their selections. A small ding to service and atmosphere, after we were done the bus-boy rolled his cart to the table (full of everyone else's dirty dishes and unfinished food) and loaded our stuff in there too. This was somewhat emblematic of the whole package - high priced, delicious food that deserved a better setting. If you're in the mood for very casual dining, delicious food, are ok with the price, this place is a great choice. If you're looking for a quieter, slightly mid to high-end experience, this isn't the spot. We can be a tough crowd, particularly on black businesses. We tried to make a reservation online but it said there were none.
