Stihl Doesn't Stand behind Their Products Anymore…read more In March of this year I went to use my Stihl MSA220C battery operated chain saw and it would not start. I had paid a total of $849.92 for the saw, 2 batteries and the battery charger. Not exactly chump change. I took it to the place I purchased it, Luhrs Hardware in Hawley, PA, to be checked out and repaired if necessary. On March 20 Luhrs advised that the saw was not worth repairing, because the motor brushes had seized up. Just throw it out and buy a new one. I subsequently emailed Stihl about the product failure, which appears to be a manufacturing defect. The saw, purchased November 5, 2020, has been used only sparingly, and not commercially. Motor brushes shouldn't seize up. I offered to ship the defective product to Stihl (at my expense), and since the warranty had expired, I offered to pay "a reasonable fee" to have it repaired. This is what I sent to Stihl: "Purchased Stihl MSA 220C on 11/5/2020. Use saw only sparingly (home use, not commercial) This season tried to use saw and it would not start. Had it inspected at a Stihl dealer and was advised that the motor brushes seized and the saw was toast, said it wasn't worth repairing & to throw it away. Before I do that, I am inquiring whether Stihl will stand behind this product and make a repair for a reasonable charge if I ship it to you at my expense. I have long had Stihl gas powered chain saws, blowers and weed whackers, all still alive & working fine, this is my first Stihl battery product and I am really disappointed in this. Kindly adise," Stihl's rather curt response today (May 9) was they would not repair it, even for a fee. Thomas, Sorry to hear about this experience. It looks like the saw has surpassed the warranty period. In this situation we will not be able to provide assistance with a repair. I used their service with u-haul's u-box, where you pack a box, let it remain in storage at Wadeson's and then ship it when you're ready. After about a month and a half of storage, I had them ship the box to CA. I soon received a padlock key in an envelope in the mail from Wadeson's with no explanation (keep in mind that you lock the box with your own padlock, for which I alone had the key). When the box eventually arrived, it was a completely different box, half-full. Hence, the new padlock key. I packed my box to the brim and I was able to walk into this box. Everything of value was missing. My professional musical gear, my snowboard gear, electronics, amplifier, an amazing record collection, clothing. I'm still realizing what was missing. My whole life was in that box. Only after I contacted them did they tell me that my box had fallen off a forklift and broke. They said they packed everything neatly into the new box, but this was clearly not true. They were extremely sketchy and apparently had no security footage, never made an inventory, and most importantly, never contacted me. U-haul insurance gave my a paltry $2k to cover all of this gear after a lengthly experience finding old receipts and creating an inventory. It was all worth sooo much more. I will never go to Wadeson's again.

I will look online for a saw blade, drill bit, etc... and decide to pay the extra few cents and save on time and gas. Guess what?... they are always in the ballpark or better prices. Also a great place to exchange propane tanks. Fast and easy! No standing in a line and groveling for an employee to help you. Lastly, every time I need help with finding something, I never have to ask, I am always approached first, and usually by the owner. The bonus is, they often give instructions to make the job simpler. Aside from my personal opinion of supporting small businesses, I can assure you, those big box stores will not and cannot give you the service and expertise you will receive at this hardware store.
