I love this winery!…read more I came here for my birthday. I had read some write ups on their wine and found them online. Such a hidden gem. Can't believe they haven't been reviewed yet!!! Before we even visited, we joined their email blasts on their website. We ended up ordering about 8 bottles before even tasting their stuff. We visited them back in August with a larger group of 9. I had emailed them and set up the tasting. It was great for our schedule for us to taste at 9:30!!!! Earlier then most wineries open up. Sarah met our group to pour us 4 wines. She ended up pouring us 6 (one of which we had ordered blindly.) The tasting was in their warehouse. It was little different than all the other wineries we visited that weekend. Sarah even warned us that it was at the end of harvest and their might be a lot of commotion during our tasting... which I'm all about!!!! I love seeing wineries in action, you know, really getting the feel of what the wine world is all about! It ended up not being too crazy but it was a unique tasting compared to all the other tastings we had that weekend. Their wines are great!!! My hubby and I have continued to ordered wines from them! We also attended a pick up party in December. They had some new, old and library wines they were pouring as well as some brick oven pizza from a local pizzaria. We will continue to order from them and visit them every time we are in the area!!! I have a very hard time tasting reds when it's almost 100 degrees out and not in an air conditioned tasting room. We stood in the barrel room to taste our flight. While Sarah was very sweet and nice, the wines were not hitting my palate very well. Although she pulled them from their cool, air conditioned office, they sat on the barrels for a bit and tasted a little warm to me. Their petite syrah was not my favorite. We did buy a few bottels of the 15 Syrah. They do make a good Zin, again the 15 was better than the 14 in my opinion. I think our tasting would have been better if it was in a cooler room, or maybe winter.

What can I say about Detert Family Vineyards...what a hidden gem! This little family-run winery…read moreand vineyard is big on history and talent! The vineyard itself consists of old-vine Cabernet Franc and a small planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, but all of it resides within the original bounds of the vaunted To-Kalon vineyard, so you can't ask for better terroir. Tom, the family winemaker (and descendant of the family that purchased the land a few generations ago), hosted us at the vineyard to taste. The tasting was held outside at a picnic bench on the deck of his grandparent's home which the family now uses mostly for special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was charming and rustic...a real counterpoint to the wines, which are anything but rustic. The wines that we tasted were two vintages of Cabernet Franc (the specialty) and two vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Cabernet Franc rose. All were wines of remarkable character, complexity, structure, and aging-potential. We were blown away, though we got it once Tom spoke a bit about his background (this guy worked as assistant winemaker under Heidi Barrett for a decade at Revana before heading out on his own to take up the reigns at his family's winery). Another big selling point is that these wines are "affordable", particularly for premium single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc is the real treat though...it has always been one of my favorites as a single varietal, and this is the best I have ever had. I can't speak highly enough about this wine or the tasting experience. It was magnificent!

I sent a message to their email address and Misha promptly responded. GETTING THERE It was a bit of an adventure driving to the property. Cell service eventually gave out, but we were provided clear instructions on how to arrive. The grounds are breathtaking! Such a peaceful and beautiful setting. I would have loved to walk around more, but it was a bit rainy. TASTING We arrived a bit late, but that didn't seem to be a problem. We were greeted and given waters. Then greeted once again by Blue the cat who stayed with us during the rest of our visit. We were fortunate enough to be led through the wines by the owner John. He was incredibly personable and wonderful to talk to! We had a great conversation, made even better the wines. Each wine more delicious than the last. My favorite was the "Papa's Knoll" Cabernet - we had to took one home!

The winemaker used to produce Kobalt and is somewhat of a cult collector wine producer. Got a good tasting of the 2011 vintage. Started out a bit subdued and alcoholic but as it opened up it was spicier and softer on the palate. It's nice to see some not so commercial finds sometimes not so far from some of the most famous in the area

I had never been to this Cloverdale location before as it had previously been closed to the public, but now that they have combined tasting rooms for Souverain and Cellar No. 8/Asti Winery, it is now open to everybody and today was the perfect opportunity. Upon arrival, I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that it was right by the freeway exit/onramp as I had fully been expecting to search for it along the long stretch of Asti Road. There is a lot of historical significance here as this was the site of the Italian Swiss Colony which was founded in 1881. I've heard that for decades, this had been quite a destination for tourists on vacation. I took a picture of the plaque I saw out front. The building which is now the main tasting room also served as a post office, so there is still a mail area just inside the door. Since it was the day after Memorial Day weekend, it was super empty in here, I'm sure a stark contrast to the absolute madhouse it must have been over the long holiday weekend, especially with all the great weather. Anyway, I took a bunch of pictures which I will post shortly. Sadly, true to his word, the cool guy that we met at the old Healdsburg Square location last time (Jim?) did not make it to the new tasting room and apparently did retire. Most likely, he is on the cruise that he had been telling us about or travelling around the world as he had planned. However, the person behind the counter...the pourer (is there a proper term?) today was named Charlene and she was really cool. We discovered that she was originally from Louisiana and she was very knowledgable with a similar passion for wines and history so we had a fantastic time talking to her about wines and wineries in general. As always, it's the people factor that really makes such a big difference in the overall experience. I'm a member of Cellar 360, so there was no charge for our tastings, but even if there had been, it wouldn't have been a big deal as they only charge a $5.00 tasting fee per person. Not bad at all! Anyway, we tasted the following today: Cellar No. 8 Sauvignon Blanc 2008, North Coast, $16 bottle Cellar No. 8 Chardonnay 2008, Sonoma County, $17 bottle Souverain Pinot Noir 2008, Caneros, $25 bottle Cellar No. 8 Petite Sirah 2006, North Coast, $20 bottle Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Home Vineyard, $35 bottle As you can see, their prices were incredibly reasonable and we were fortunate enough to also sample a reserve chardonnay, a reserve merlot, and a reserve cabernet sauvignon. The regular chardonnay was okay, but the reserve one really raised some eyebrows, especially for the price. For me, this one was reminiscent of the chardonnay that I recently had at Chateau Montelena when I visited my friend Matt who recently started working there. Regretfully, I was so busy enjoying the wine that I forgot to catch the vintage or specific details. It was good though! As expected, the characteristics of their petite sirah was more conducive to pairing with food than for casual sipping, but I felt that with an appropriate pairing like wild game or perhaps venison, it could be a most pleasant pairing. After all the tastings, we walked around their gift store and then went outside to walk around the beautiful, but almost empty (well today anyway) grounds of the winery itself. The haunting emptiness of a Tuesday after a long holiday weekend, contrasted against the stunning scenery of the vines and calming serenity of the hillside was rather breathtaking...pretty spectacular without all those people to mess it all up. Darn humans...LOL. Anyway, walking around, saw a bunch of wild birds and even a lizard as it came up to look at us before it scurried away. I took a picture of him so if it came out, I'll be sure to include it with my photos for this winery. Just took a look and he looks fantastic! I don't remember the last time I enjoyed walking around a winery so much, but I'm guessing it's because it was so empty after the long holiday. This location is pretty far north and off the beaten path, so for me that is actually a plus. Nice winery...will definitely be back.

Most are ridiculously over priced both the tasting fee and the wine. So when I discover a place that makes delicious wine and has reasonable prices I feel compelled to share with others. The owner/winemaker Rollie showed us a great time and took us on a quick, informative tour of the winemaking process. The wines we tasted were outstanding and we left with a 'few' bottles in tow. I highly recommend phoning Rollie and making an appointment on your next trip to Napa. Both your tastebuds and winecellar will be happy!

My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Midsummer Cellars while visiting Napa Valley this…read moresummer. Both Rollie and Sally Heitz were present for our tasting. What a total delight!! We tasted several vintages and varietals. Their Grenache Rosé was truly spectacular and a perfect wine for the hot summer day. Rollie also shared several different Cabernet Sauvignons which were some of the best we tasted while visiting Napa Valley. We visit Napa Valley every summer and have yet to have such a unique experience at any other winery. The quaint setting of the winery gives a one of a kind perspective of the valley. You almost feel as if you participated in the wine making! The views are spectacular. The wines are sensational. The owners are delightful. If you miss this winery while in Napa, you have truly missed THE BEST hidden gem in the Valley. Thanks Rollie and Sally.
