I have used 5 Star Mechanical for several years, and they used to be responsive, thorough, and easy to deal with. Apparently, at some point, that version of the company quietly left the building. In early June, I had them out for an ongoing air-pressure/airflow issue. The technician looked at the system and told me someone would get back to me with options to correct it. While he was there, he also fixed a loose thermostat wire and recommended that I sign up for their service agreement, which supposedly included preferred scheduling and service. That sounded reasonable, so I signed up. It is now late August. I am still waiting for the magical follow-up call. Over the past several months, I have called repeatedly. The woman who answers the phone tells me, every single time, that she needs to speak with Tommy and that Tommy will call me back. Tommy has now been "calling me back" for several months. At this point, I can only assume his phone requires a replacement part that is also waiting on a callback from Tommy. After enough unanswered calls, I finally asked for a refund on the service agreement. After all, the entire reason I bought it was because I was told it would provide preferred service. Apparently, "preferred service" at 5 Star Mechanical means you are preferred to the customers whose calls they ignore even longer. I was then informed that the service agreement is basically non-refundable. Fantastic. So to recap: they encouraged me to purchase a service agreement promising better access and preferred scheduling, failed to follow up on the problem they already came out to inspect, ignored months of phone calls, repeatedly promised callbacks that never happened, and then told me I cannot get my money back. At this point, I'd get more value out of wiping my ass with the service agreement, which may actually be its most practical use Had they simply told me in June, "We have no intention of getting back to you," I could have called another HVAC company and saved myself an entire summer of chasing them. Instead, I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt because I had been a customer for years and because I had literally paid for a service agreement that was supposed to make this process easier. Lesson learned. I don't expect a company to drop everything the moment I call. I do expect that after five calls over several months, returning one of them shouldn't require an act of Congress This is not one missed call or one scheduling mistake. This has been months of being brushed off while holding a paid service agreement that appears to guarantee absolutely nothing. 5 Star Mechanical used to be a company I recommended. Based on my experience this summer, I would now recommend keeping your credit card in your wallet until you have a very clear understanding of what their "preferred service" actually gets you. read more

I paid to have my air conditioner fixed when I called them two weeks later to say it's not working the woman who claims to be the owner got very nasty with me and said we're not sending somebody back without charging. She was nasty and rude. So if you want to get bad service and spoken down to buy some sad sad sad people then you should call them. read more

I can't say enough about this company. My furnace died on me earlier this month, and I was getting estimates from a whole source of other competitors. I was not impressed with the other individuals that came and gave me estimates. These guys were able to get me a new furnace and get it installed in a little over a week that also happened to be right before it really got cold. The employees were at my house for two days installing the unit and a humidifier. Throughout that time they were very respectful of my home. They placed tarps down from the front door to the basement. They kept me informed of the progress as the install was happening. I can not recommend them enough. read more

FIVE STARS for Five Star Mechanical!!! Please know we waited since the end of August to write this review. We wanted to test and see how the AC and the Heat Pump worked in order to make a thorough and meaningful review. All work was perfectly done right the first time and the units they installed all functioned perfectly and exceeded our expectations. Tom the owner surveyed our job personally. He answered all my questions and advised me of the best options. We are very pleased with the extensive project that this company and its employees had completed on our home. I say employees as this company sent well-trained workers directly employed by them (not subcontracted). We had 2 huge AC units; running at 11seer. (low rating for cooling by today's standards) Two Trane's one had pooped out and the other ran at 3 kw an hour OUCH! We settled on replacing both Trane's with the Bosch Heat Pump Condenser 20+ SEER rating for cooling and a much more efficient cost-wise for heating saving a lot in Natural Gas during the shoulder seasons. We had the matching Bosch Air Handlers installed in the attic. Variable Speed which is a huge difference in the units that they replaced. Heating from early spring to late November. When the temperatures outside are above 35 degrees. They set it up as a hybrid system, below 35 degrees the gas furnace operates, and above 35 degrees the heat pump operates which is a significant saving on the cost of Natural Gas. This was a big project and Five Star professionally emailed written specific and complete estimate and set the date and arrived on time; they sent well-trained, polite, professional employees. I kid you not there was notable talent in the crew. Some were powerfully strong and one genius, Matthew, I must mention ran the wires from the attic to the units he fussed to make it perfect. He ran the wires from the attic to the new wifi thermostats and patiently conveyed the operations of these advanced controllers. Five Star properly guided us for our needs, they applied for the PSEG rebate and arranged for the check to be directly sent to us in our name. The rebate was a nice percentage of the cost of this project. They also prepared an official Certificate of Capital Improvement form ST-124 and emailed it. Every phone call was answered by a courteous, competent helpful staff member. We took two previous estimates and the other two companies did not even come close to the honesty and professionalism of this outstanding company. read more

When our high velocity central air conditioning unit stopped working suddenly on a Friday afternoon, we first called the firm who originally installed it but they never bothered to return our call. With evening approaching I saw Five Star Mechanical's great online reviews and called them. Five Star had a service technician here within the hour! The technician (Matt) arrived on time and was polite and skillful; he even put on booties before coming into the house. Matt quickly diagnosed the issue as a loose wire leading to the compressor unit and fixed it in less than 10 minutes. Pricing was very reasonable. Best of all Matt did not recommend an expensive unnecessary repair as many others might have in the situation. We are very happy with Five Star and intend to use their services from now on. read more

Very sad to say that Tommy did not show up to a 7:00am scheduled and double confirmed appointment to provide a estimate today. No call to let me know he would be late. I had to reach out to the office to let them know of the no show. The office could not locate or connect with the owner. I signed up for Yelp in 2007. Never felt compelled to write a review until now. My building recommended Milestone Mechanical in the Bronx to repair my broken bedroom AC unit, because the management company (Douglas Elliman) had used them in the past. They sent a guy over to inspect the unit. After less than 5 minutes of looking at it he told me that the unit had a broken compressor and would be too costly to fix, so better just to replace it. Price quote on replacement unit + installing = $2,800 Seeking a second opinion, I called Five Star Mechanical and told them about the situation decribed above, they inspected the unit a few days later, and found it could in fact be fixed by simply replacing one part. Total cost for inspection + part replacement = $462 I saved $2,338. Five Star knew I was ready to pay $2,800 to the other company, they could have just charged me $2,500 for a replacement, but they showed real integrity and gave me the lowest cost option. That is rare and that's why I just wrote my first review ever on Yelp. read more

I can not say enough good things about this company. We just had new heating burner and central air installed and it was seamless. The installation crew was on time, left no clean up were so polite and knowledgable just a pure pleasure to deal with. if you want to be harrassed on the phone or treated like a non-entity this is the place for you! I have had to use their services: our new luxury condo had inferior PTAC units installed - less than a year and one of my three units timers did not work; then 2 and 4 years later the other PTAC units would not work - they repaired two units or so they said; one stopped working almost immediately; the other worked for 2 weeks and came under the incredibly awful guarantee of 30 days for parts and labor (after I spent close to 800.00!); the "fixed" unit was repaired but had an offensive oil smell and then it began to bang bang bang when turned on this winter for heat ( so effectlvely, I have no units working) - My emails (plural!) were not returned and neither was my phone call about this desperate situation during the coldest part of the year.
