Went with a friend. We both felt the server was mostly absent and very inattentive when she did come around. For example, she didn't ask if we wanted anything from the drink menu before ordering (or even while ordering) , didn't ask us if we wanted ground pepper on our ceasar salads, didn't ask if we wanted refills on coffee or ice tea, didn't check in to ask how everything was during the meal. Ok when rating restaurants the number of stars doesn't mean it is that "level" of restaurant. A five star rating for a restaurant from me means it met or exceeded all of my expectations. That being said we had a great experience at Five. We have been there twice. The only complaint is the music is TOO LOUD. The food was great. The service was great. I would recommend it to anyone. You can dress casually or dress up. It is one of those Northwest kind of places. read more

I planned my Mom's 60th birthday party with the owner Ted for last night. Ted went above and beyond to make sure my Mom's party was perfect. We had planned to have it on the patio and when it was pouring down rain Ted was on the roof soaking wet trying to make sure we were covered. Had reservations one evening went in there and I had failed to tell them my hubby was in a wheelchair and the area they wanted to seat us was a little tight so instead of having us wait until a table came open the would accommodate the owner/manager came over and said it was a nice night and they would be willing to sit us in there outside seating area that they hadn't officially opened up yet and turn on the heaters and gave us blankets and free appetizers. I have to say it was a nice night and very pleasant with the heaters and the food was awesome! I will definitely go back though next time make a point of asking for outside seating since the restaurant is a little small to accommodate wheelchairs...It was soooo nice for the manager to realize that and make our evening perfect... read more

WHAT HAPPENED? We are regular guests at Five Bistro and have loved this place since it opened, even recommending to our friends who normally dine in Seattle. Our dinner experience on 9.12.14 was the first time we ever had less than over the top service, however. The food was superb (as always) but we waited for 5 minutes at the host desk (it was only 6:20 so the restaurant was not full yet). before we were seated. Several servers walked up to get menus and did not even acknowledge us. When the hostess did arrive, she did not greet us with "hello" but "can I help you?" WHAT? We actually had to tell her we'd like to get something to eat. And she actually seemed surprised! Our server gave us only minimal attention; we had to ask for a second round of drinks twice, he forgot to bring a side we ordered. Overall, we felt very unwelcome. Not sure what to chalk it up to for this particular occasion. Sent an email to owner via website...5 days later have heard nothing. :( read more

The food was just fine. Some small & simple details that were overlooked and if they were not, I think would easily increase the perception of good service to exceptional. 1. Waiter, or anyone else, did not fill water cups upon being sat, nor were they ever refilled throughout the entire visit. 2. I asked to split a dish with my daughter; the meal came out on one plate. I think it would have been a notch up if the waiter, instead, thought to have our dish split prior to being served...doesn't take much to do this. Better presentation. We used the same small plates we had our pizza on to dish up our portions; a little awkward. 3. Unfortunately, my daughter has nut allergies and we both do not like chocolate. Perhaps had the seasonal dessert been available we would have not had to go somewhere else for dessert. No other choice. Our luck. 4. Our waiter walked by several times, past our table but never bothered to clear any dirty dishes. Thought it inefficient being he was already there. We were at the back table so it's not like anyone else was back there to look into. Again, all in the details. These things don't cost money to perform. My first visit here was lukewarm. Tighten these things up and it'd be a different experience, in my opinion. Keep improving! read more

What a great night! At 5:00 we called to get a reservation for 6:00 - 'no problem' she said - we arrived and we were seating right away. Our server Connor was great! We asked about recommendations and he had several. We started with the bruschetta - followed by the beet salad split -- the I had the pear/gorgonzola pizza and my husband had a pasta. All of it was wonderful -- we even had a ninja service person come through and take our dirty dishes. We have been here 4 or 5 times but this time was by far our favorite -- two thumbs up for Connor - he was a JOY! read more

I love this place! This corner of Edmonds really needed a "real restaurant" like this. It's become my favorite place for a glass a wine and a small plate. It's so delightful to see the place busy. I saw this place a couple weeks ago on my way into downtown edmonds. I stopped in last weekend with a co-worker. The interior is a little blah, but the food and service was wonderful. They had a limited menu, but my pear pizza and chop chop salad was to die for. I have been thinking about this place all week and will be back very soon. read more

I enjoyed a nice evening out with my friends this past week. We shared the Pear Pizza (yum) and each had the chop salad (again yum)! We also had a chicken (yes a chicken) or two of their house red, which I was very impressed with. We were there for hours and enjoyed the friendly staff and casual atmosphere. We were there so long they gave us a tour of the outdoor patio that will open in May. We all agreed a few more menu items, maybe even happy hour specials would make this place perfect. read more

The Wife and I had lunch recently, and found the prices vs the size and quality of the dishes to be way out of proportion! wife had a pasta dish,which was supposed to be somewhat spicy,but was very bland in her opinion. She compared it to some grocery store boxed "Italian" meals we used to puchase back in the bad old days! I had the Italian sausage pizza,which was quite good-but come on!-$10 for what amounted to one slice of pizza. The wife asked for a little bread to go with her pasta. Worst food and service I have had in my life. First time ever at this restaurant. Came in for lunch and while it seems to have the appearance of a high class restaurant the food was not great. I ordered a chicken sandwich and when the plate arrived there were fingerprints all over my plate as well as scratches as well as part of the plate being broke in the corner. This is not acceptable. I was expecting a sandwich with high quality bread, not some cheap grain bread from a grocery store served with grocery store style cheap potato chips. I will not be eating her again read more

I was in a mood for some good pork chops and trying to find a 4-5 star restaurant with reasonable prices. This turned out to be difficult. My husband found Five on Yelp and we decided to go with it even though their current on-line menu did not have pork chops but lamp chops instead. As soon as we got there, we were greeted and seated immediately by a very welcoming server. As first time visitors, he explained the foundations behind the menu and delivered the detail of the options so well, I had to take time to decide between the pork chops (which turned out to be on the menu), carne asada and salmon. My husband and I decided on the clams and mussels for appetizers, I ate the pork chops and he ate the carne asada. The meats were tender, juicy, and aromatically delicious. Their spin on what could be run-of-the-mill fare makes their dishes unique and so much more interesting. We love spicy so their spicy clams and mussels were great and the juice was perfect for dipping their bread in. I definitely recommend this place and would like to return another time to try their salmon. read more

We are regulars at 5 Bistro and I hesitate to give only an A-OK rating but,...Tonight the specials were Oysters which we had. They are excellent here with the champagne vinaigrette and fresh horseradish. Beet salad, always good. The problem is that they often miss the mark on the entree. Overcooked tasteless salmon, Carne yuk asada, etc. Tonight the surprise de jour was filet mignon for $39.00 freaking dollars on a plate with a few roasted potatoes and five asparagus spears. This price was not on the reader board and yes, we could have asked the server. We both had it so that brings the entree total to 80 bucks and trust me, the presentation and simple pan sauce does not justify the price. Save your money folks and just have the pizza which is excellent. Have it at Happy Hour for 5 dollars and let 5 bistro work a little harder or perhaps think a little harder about their customers. We felt ripped off tonight and it did not leave a good taste in our mouths. That said, have the peanut butter gelato with a shot of espresso. Thanks Five for the 200 dollar , we can't afford dessert now rip off meal. At least have your servers tell the specials WITH prices. It makes us feel cheap to ask the price, OK? read more

We've been wanting to try Five since it opened and finally had a chance last night. Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed. The place has potential with great decor and location, but the menu is a little boring and limited. We ordered the chop salad that neither of us thought was that special. It needed more dressing and it was on the warm side. We paid an extra 2.50 for chicken which is not worth the 4 or 5 small, thin slices placed on top of the salad. We also ordered the mussels/clams appetizer. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Some of the mussels/claims tasted a bit funky and the broth needed some "spark". I agree with the water issue that other reviewers commented on...like the concept, but luke warm water doesn't do much for me. That being said, the place has only been open since mid-Jan, so they have some kinks to work out, I'm sure. I hope they make it since they are in a great location and we always need more great restaurants in Edmonds. Good Luck Five! read more

I want to first start off with the positive. Great food and nice ambiance. That being said I was really surprised by the service. There were very few tables that were seated, maybe four or five, and i saw several staff members. The waiter took our order, which was two drinks, an appetizer and the main course. It literally took 15 minutes to get our drinks out to us (this is not an exaggeration- we checked the time). The mojito was good. My *virgin* bloody mary was not good. Completely bland. I am sure they only used tobasco and tomato juice. They then brought out the food- the appetizer and main dish at the same time. This really took away from enjoying the appetizer first as I didn't want to let our dinner get cold. The waiter never checked back to see if everything was ok, and did not ask about my drink that was barely touched. Granted, I could have said something, but for this type of establishment they should have been more attentive. I left feeling upset that we spent the money we did, there were very few people there, and we had to wait so long for service. I do not think that we will go back, which really is a bummer since my husband and I live in Edmonds and we were looking forward to having a new "spot". read more

The food was pretty good, but we won't be back. It was cramped and crowded and probably busy on Friday night but we had many logistics issues. No parking in the lot - we had to park blocks away on residential street. Seated outside since there was no room inside and told there were heaters, but those were turned off shortly after we were seated and we were quite cold. Got our name on the list for a semi-reservation but they didn't have it when we got there. Server initially balked at a request for ice in the water although she did come through, but glasses are tiny and lukewarm water on table quickly melted the ice. We asked for the manager and our server claimed to be the manager but it seemed unlikely. We were charged for something extra we didn't order. No salt & pepper on tables, no spoons. We ended up sharing one fork since the server took one away and didn't replace it or come back soon enough. Glad we had a Groupon and didn't pay full price, but my wife ran out crying by the end of the evening and there wasn't a real manager available to discuss it with. Décor was some sort of cheap shabby sheik or something. read more

We dined here on a busy Saturday evening and waited about 10 minutes even with a reservation. The food was really good, we ordered caesar salad for the three of us (brought out to us on plates, not dumped from a mason jar per other reviews), the pork chop (great), a pepperoni pizza (the best of the bunch!), and the carne asada (very good too). For dessert we had the chocolate coffee item and the brownie which was a weekly special and was more like a cake. The service was a bit slow but not bad, however I did find it annoying that I was asked, "would you like anchovies with your salad?" and when I said yes, was not informed there is a surcharge for this...$3.00, one dollar for each anchovy that was on the salad. This surcharge is not on the menu. When I spoke with a friend who had dined here as well, she said that on her visit, the waiter asked if she wanted bread to soak up the great sauce she had in her dish and when she said yes, he brought it and charged her for the bread without telling her about the surcharge, another of which is not on the menu. If I dine here again I will need to remind myself that they upsell items but I shouldn't have to do this, especially for a restaurant of this caliber. If I am asked my opinion of this restaurant I will be telling others to be aware of this practice which is petty and really just unecessary. Other than that, it's a good option for the Shoreline/Edmonds area if you don't feel like driving downtown for decent food. The pizza was a surprise winner here! read more

Located in a strip mall with a semi-enclosed back patio for warm weather opportunities, this small low-lit restaurant is a lip-smacking surprise. Pacific Northwest Italian with a bent towards high caliber tequila describes the trajectory of this restaurant. Baby arugula salad simply dressed with fresh lemon and olive oil tossed with crushed roasted almonds for richness against the slight peppery tasting greens made me think of summer garden harvests. The typical clams and mussels proved to be not typical at all. Tender baby clams and mussels were quickly cooked in a broth of white wine, garlic, chile flakes and roasted red peppers. It was a superb broth that nicely blended together and at the same time the character of each ingredient would sometimes surface to ensure you did not take it for granted. My husband had the pork chops which tasted like it had been brined, rubbed with spices like rosemary then grilled. As if this was not enticing enough, it came on a bed of rich mash potatoes and freshly pickled shiitake mushrooms. My husband cautiously shared a few bites with me as he wanted to keep the bulk of it for himself. Dessert was apple crisp with a complex cinnamon taste that intrigued my taste buds...the accompanying vanilla ice cream was super silky and addictive. Lest I forget, they have the best house margarita I have ever had...they use elder flower liquor which brings out the floral notes of the limes...YUMMY! read more

Went to Five with my family and ordered the Carne Asada. That was a very delicious sandwich. My Dad ordered the Rigatonni with meat sauce. Meat eaters this dish is not for you. When my father explained his disappointment in the lack of meat in the meat sauce (He searched for it and found two tiny pieces of sausage) they remedied the problem by bringing him a bowl of sauce with ample sausage. They failed to tell us until the bill came that the charge was an additional $8. The salad we ordered was minus one of the ingredients but they didn't opt to discount our bill. They sure didn't hesitate to add the extra charges. That left a bad taste in our mouths. Service was friendly but slow. We've gone to Five many times with family & friends and now we are going to have to reconsider this as one of our lunch or dinner options. Too many other places to go to that won't charge extra for meat in the meat sauce. read more

I've owned a bistro so I know how to run one. The major issue here is management. I told the manager when we arrived that it was a birthday dinner. From that point forward - nothing was done to recognize this special occasion. Because of this, we left without even ordering dessert (I think I even saw a picture on their website with a dessert being served with a lit candle on it - so they know what to do!) The layout is "busy" with all the servers converging at the entrance to the kitchen/bar - talking socially and sipping drinks in the same space in full view of customers. And the concrete floor makes it very loud. I also witnessed our server pouring my wine from a corked bottle, not having enough and asking the bartender for another bottle. The bartender was too busy so the server topped off my wine from a screw-top bottle! When I confrontd him, he denied it. His offer to bring another glass was declined since there was little trust left at that point. On the flip side, the food was pretty good. Too bad the front of the house can't get its act together. And why the redundant name? Don't they know that a "bistro" is a restaurant? read more

How have I not reviewed Five yet? Oops! I love Five. I've been going to Five about 10 times a year for the last 3 yrs for either lunch or Happy Hour. Great fresh ingredients, interesting small menus that still manage to conflict you because everything sounds (and is) so good. Well prepared innovative food with choices from healthy but tasty to over the top richness. Crazy good drink menu too. That said, the restaurant is intimate and isn't the best choice for a large party unless you plan in advance (fair enough!). Took our kids there for the first time today, always an iffy proposition. Went great. Acoustics can easily make a meal or destroy it and that's times 10 if you bring a 6 yr old little boy. We went early and knew the kids would like the menu (seafood and pizza) but the Blues and Rock mix playing at a nice volume from the minute you get out of the car really helped set a chill "let's enjoy this" vibe and was enough to let all the tables have their own space for conversation.
