I forgot how cute the downtown Edmonds area is! My work group and I decided to have dinner at Charcoal, which was convenient for me since I was working nearby. Staff were attentive and the space is modern with an open kitchen. My group ordered the roasted beets, grilled calamari, and steak lettuce cups. I really enjoyed the roasted beets and the grilled calamari - I would highly recommend ordering those. I wasn't particularly a fan the steak lettuce cups. For dinner I ordered the Picanha. I would happily order that again - great flavor from the fat cap and I actually couldn't even finish it. My group also ordered the duck confit from the fresh sheet, the salmon and the steak salad, which they enjoyed. We also ordered dessert. We had the cheesecake and the sorbet. Went here on a Tuesday where bottles of wine are half off! Our first time and it's a unique venue, modern casual, connected to an art gallery. Didn't get to the gallery side - but definitely next time! Ann, our server was great and gave us an excellent wine pairing that went well with everyone's entrées. Our group had the salmon, pork tenderloin, smash burger and prime picanha. My pork tenderloin was cooked well and had good flavors. Everyone loved their food as well. Very mixed feelings about this place, as we had very back and forth experience. Came here with a large group for a special celebration (the manager of our group had called the restaurant in advance and asked for permission for this celebration and permission for things like small decorations at the table, which was all OKed in advance). While the majority of the staff were excellent, there was one front hostess that really went out of her way to be very rude to our group and kept coming over (she was not our waitress who was great). She really spoke down on us in regards to tone, hovered, and was overall very standoffish, hovering and glaring at us (for example, adding different rules - when we all mingled around the guest of honor when he came, she immediately came over and said "Ok, I need you to sit down now to order", saying that we couldn't do certain things e.g. when we had a group photo, there was a flash and she immediately chastised us with "no flash photography" immediately, etc). She eventually left (shift ended?) and we were able to have a more quiet pleasant evening after that without having pressure or feeling like we were problematic (we were trying to be respectful and mindful of other patrons and were overall as considerate as a large corporate group could be and other patrons did not seem to mind - several tables around us even interacted with ours/got the attention of our group to congratulate the guest of honor). We ordered different appetizers and drinks. The bread and burrata were standard, I wasn't a fan of their calamari (which was soft and not very seared, which was unexpected). I tried both the steak (the 12 oz sirloin which was $75 and also got to try the scallops). The majority of the group who tried the steaks (mostly filet mignon's and sirloins) were satisfied. I thought the steak had a nice char flavor (from the charcoal namesake) and the potato that accompanied it was layered and crispy. However, the scallops which I tried (a part of the surf and turf) came out very small and overcooked unfortunately, which was disappointing for a $45 dish. I think the total came out to well over $110 per person before tip and tax from the entrees, appetizers and drinks, which does put things on the slightly pricier side. Foodwise, I would say the steak was tasty (albeit over $70) and the atmosphere of the restaurant was nice, but wasn't a fan of the other dishes. Service was mixed, with it being an overall pleasant experience, but one person can really ruin the atmosphere. Delicious anniversary dinner at Charcoal in downtown Edmonds! We were pleasantly surprised to find out it's all day happy hour on Mondays, so started off with a mellow Old Fashioned cocktail. We shared the bone marrow that was very rich yet matched well with pickled radish. For dinner I had the scallops that were seared well and came with lots of veggies, though found the beet puree to be too sweet to match. My wife had the generous portion sized mushroom tagliatelle, and my daughter said her duck confit was one of the best she's tasted. We ended with a dark chocolate torte that was super decadent yet not overfilling. Service was attentive but not overbearing, and I liked the modern decor and the peaks into the next door art gallery, that is nice to enjoy while eating! We came here for our anniversary and absolutely loved the food, service, and vibe. The food. We ordered the bone marrow appetizer and it was absolutely delicious. The pickled radish balanced the bone marrow so well, and the flavor of the marrow w the seasoning was a great balance of savory flavors. The Santa Maria Plate had chicken, picanha, skirt steak, and sausage, but we asked for the extra surf and turf that came with scallops and prawn. The meat was very well prepared, with specific high marks for the skirt steak. Perfectly cooked and had that charcoal flavor you just can't recreate. The resateaunt is situated next to an art gallery and offers views into the gallery which is such a nice design touch and adds to the overall ambiance and experience. Kale salad was dry, it genuinely wasn't massaged enough so it was extremely bitter and the dressing was no where to be found. However, the duck and sausage itself was ok...but the duck over a bed of beans was an interesting choice, but the thing that made me wanna take away 3 stars was the flavor of the beans and lack of basic service. It had no taste and I couldn't understand what the purpose of the beans were? It definitely wasn't for presentation or flavor and i feel like literally any single other vegetable would've accompanied the duck better. Maybe it's not meant to understood. Service was below par. Besides the initial greeting and order taking + food drop off we didn't get checked in on or even get asked how we were doing. I've eaten here quite a few times and like the service and overall restaurant feel. Generally speaking the steaks are solid and enjoy the chicken and duck mains as well. Where I've been disappointed is with specials. Generally the chef specials seem to be mediocre. On the last visit I had Brussel sprout Caesar that just didn't pop. I also tried their seasonal crafted cocktail and it fell short. Lastly I had their charcoal dusted pork. It was cooked perfectly however the puree, cabbage and pear didn't pair well with the pork. While the other menu items are intriguing, I went with a group that was set on having the shared mixed grill experience - we opted for the "Che Vamos!" enhancement. It was fabulous, and soooo much food for 4 people. There were leftovers, but not for lack of appetite/collective trying. I have been wanting to try Charcoal for awhile so went there in a date night. It is a great dining experience! Excellent service, friendly staff and a great location. We started out with the brioche rolls and roasted beets. Two great apps with lots of flavors! For dinner we had the pork tenderloin and the mushroom Tagliatelle. The flavors of our dinners were absolutely delicious! My pasta and steak were spot on and a great combo. I tried my girlfriends pork tenderloin when she was done and it may be one of the best things I have tasted at a restaurant. The depth of flavors in this dish are absolutely delicious and decadent. In short Great cocktails & ambiance, food is solid for the most part. Decent entry into the competition for your special-occasion dining dollar in the south county. In long We've been excited to try this place since even before it opened--the buzz has been really good. It's right downtown, which, in Edmonds, means parking will be a pain on Saturday nights (until maybe 8:00, when everyone around here goes home). It's in a corner suite on a hill, which means it has a bit of a daylight-basement effect since the streets are rising around it. But the high ceilings and 2 full walls of windows make it feel bright and airy. Lots of nice art up (there's a full gallery next door) and modern light fixtures brighten the space further. Service is relaxed but on point. They seem to staff just-right--a host, a tender, a couple servers, maybe one expo on the floor, for about 40 diners max. We scoured the menu a couple times beforehand, in delighted anticipation. This was my pick for my birthday dinner with family. It didn't even occur to us until we were leaving that the menu does NOT heavily emphasize grilled and smoked things, despite the name of the joint. What we did leave wondering was whether at least one of us should have ordered a steak. Friends have raved about the steaks here, and they're certainly the most-expensive menu items. We poked around the other parts of the menu, with kinda-average results. Asparagus Appetizer, with romesco, herbed goat cheese, and toasted nuts. We got 4 spears with tips, & 12-15 short spears under those (tips removed). Asparagus, coming into season now, is $2.99/lb at the grocery store. This was $18 for about 3-4oz of greens. I might get this again but only at HH prices. Bone marrow Decent portion, cooked rarer than I've had marrow elsewhere. The crostini were crunchy-hard, like croutons. Bacon jam on top, along with thin slices of onion. I think I prefer mustard and chewy bread with marrow. Thankfully, more and more menus feature marrow these days. Mushroom tagliatelle Very successful dish. Rich creamy sauce, chewy noodles, bright fresh peas adding some sweetness. Duck breast Perfectly cooked breast, just juicy enough to add flavor to the sauce underneath but none of the oiliness or greasiness that often threatens a serving of duck. The potatoes were a little too sweet, maybe due to the tart cherries, which were definitely too sweet for me. Kale was pretty good. Clams frites Solid bowl of clams, great flavor and crispness on the fries. Cocktails 4 for $61 before tip. Great value given the level of quality--these were all expertly made. Highlight(s) of the evening. Hemingway #2--bright and refreshing, visually beautiful. Tango with Frida--tangy and smoky, looked just like the Hemingway except a different shade of color. Dirty martini--not the biggest challenge for their talented bartender, but perfectly done. Smoke Wagon--rich, savory/seasoned, light sweetness and smoke. In the end, we'd come back for HH. The prices here set a level of expectation that's a little beyond what's on the plate, especially given that several places even in the Edmonds Bowl are dialed in on above-average (up to great) food. We liked most of the experience an awful lot, and none of it was disappointing, just needed cleanup in the details here and there. read more

We've been here a couple of times now for dinner with some friends who are regulars. Service has been great and the food is even better. The menu is somewhat limited but changes regularly which is nice. We've come here for dinner a couple of times now and enjoyed everything we've ordered. We came here last weekend and were seated promptly (I definitely recommend making a reservation because this place gets packed). Our waitress was great and attentive without being overbearing. We all ordered a cocktail to start and they came out quickly. My husband and I ordered a side of fries to share as a starter and then split the duck breast and pork chop. Their fries are insanely good. They're super crispy and delicious. You can also order them as truffle fries if you want. The duck is delicious and pairs well with the puree and reduction. We've ordered it a couple of times now and it's been perfectly cooked both times. The surprise stand out was the pork chop. I'm not a huge pork fan but I loved this. The flavor was incredible and it wasn't dry at all like pork can be. I highly recommend ordering this. For dessert I got the s'mores parfait which is yummy and not overly sweet. I returned to Charcoal, an old favorite, for a friends birthday . The service was still excellent. Acoustic panels have reduced the clamour. But something has happened to what used to be the high quality of the food. The 4 scallops, now small, whereas previously they had been large, had been brined to the point they no longer had any of the sweet scallop flavor. The searing was barely noticeable. I sent the plate back, but the second plate was almost as heavily salted indicating it was the result of unnecessary brining, not salt added during cooking. The tiny chunks of rock hard panceta beneath the sallop were too small and hard to slice. They were mixed with tiny bits of raw cauliflower, Swiss chard, and one or two undistinguished slightly sweet, bland sauces. The menu mentioned jalapeno tartar, perhaps it was made from a special variety of jalapeno with no heat. The king salmon had great flavor, but the texture was soggy. The restaurant had used frozen fish, --they used to serve fresh salmon-- but did not mention it on the menu. What used to be a delicious roasted brussel sprout salad with a light zesty, fresh Caesar dressing, now tasted like it was made with crunchily underdone blanched brussel sprouts, with no evidence of having been roasted, and a bland, creamy Caesar dressing. it's sad that a restaurant that once served some of the best food anywhere has fallen so far. Perhaps most Edmonds diners don't care about the quality if food, or simply don't now the the difference. We judicious diners who do care can only grieve for the loss. read more

What a beautiful restaurant I haven't seen before on Main St! We had plans to go somewhere else before seeing a play but there was an extended wait. I walked up Main St. and was pleasantly surprised at the menu options. I asked the hostess if she thought there would be enough time to have dinner before our 8pm show and she went back to ask the chef and staff in the kitchen. They relayed the message that we were good to go! So we had the calamari steaks, pickled veggies, Dungeness crab linguini, and the Mahi Mahi special. The food was beautifully plated and was delicious. The linguini seemed to be homemade, which I didn't expect. My friend ordered a pinot, and Charcoal's take on a French 75 and we were out of there in 40 minutes. We came in with a large extended family -- parents who love fine dining and kids who were exhausted after a long day on the harbor -- and everyone left raving about the meal. The charcoal theme is beautifully woven into the menu and elevates every dish. Highlights for us included the pork tenderloin with carrot purée and red cabbage (perfectly cooked, with incredible depth of flavor), a seared filet mignon that melted in your mouth, and the grilled calamari salad with ponzu, which was bright, fresh, and beautifully balanced. The service was outstanding -- warm, attentive, and thoughtful. The Manager noticed our kids were tired and arranged for their meals to come out quickly so the adults could truly savor our courses without stress. A small gesture that made a big difference. And to our surprise, the kids devoured the bone marrow on crostini -- who knew? Charcoal delivers an exceptional meal, great atmosphere, and top-tier service. Had a nice meal at this place last week, it's cool to see the staff making steaks on the grill. Ambience is good, the grilled steak is quite good, I had skirt steak added to my mushroom tagliatelle (amazing) and I had a bite of the picahana (also great). I also tried the smash burger which I think had a nice bun and good quality beef but it wasn't particularly "smashed" (a big miss here) and the sauce they put on the burger was not good (too sweet). They should rework it to be a bit more basic or don't call it a smasher if they want to sell an upscale burger (that isn't smashed). The fries are lightly breaded style and are incredible, 10/10 on that. read more

having read and heard mixed reviews for Charcoal, we decided to try their happy hour a few weeks ago. the dining area is sleek, spare, and modern, and surprisingly not loud. the bar is located at the end of the open kitchen close to the entrance. the bar unfortunately is quite small, seating maybe 8 with a counter bar facing a wall providing an additional 4, maybe 6 additional seats. but let us talk about the 5-star service! Charcoal opens at 4p. we arrived at 4:15p, and no, we did not have a reservation because we stopped by only for happy hour. after perusing the books, our hostess asked if we could be "done" by 5:30p? why, of course, we can! and we were promptly seated at a 4-top by the front window. we ordered from the HH menu: HH Burger: $19. we split the burger and shared the fries. the burger was not medium pink but still juicy. perhaps it's difficult to cook two 1/4 lb patties to be medium. i was grateful that a hard flavorless tomato slice was not included. the lettuce, the onions, and cheese were sufficient. i did not taste the truffle in the aioli. battered fries: crispy and fresh fried. chicken wings: $13. the star of the show. 4 whole wings - not parts - with a delicious fish sauce flavor and as promised on the menu, nicely pickled daikon and crunchy sesame seeds. these were very nice asian flavored wings. HH beer: Montucky Cold Snack lager in a can. 4% ABV. merely meh. but no complaints for $4. service was prompt and friendly. although our server knew we were there only for HH, she always included us in her "rounds". our leftover wings were boxed and bagged with care. when we left at 5:15p, the majority of the tables were filled. i recommend arriving early for happy hour and of course, reservations for dinner. read more
