These are pretty solid and hefty burgers. The patties are well-made and cooked just right so they sorta disintegrate easily into your mouth and explode in a burst of juiciness and flavour. The buns are fairly good too considering they're coming out of a plastic bag - fresh and didn't fall apart. You have your standard toppings - lettuce, tomato. The onions are grilled like INO. The burgers are bigger than INO. Better? A matter of opinion and religion, I'd say they're comparable with side-ways differences. Some of the toppings like (green chilis or A-1 sauce) are a bit unusual as well so you can create something a little out of the ordinary as you can ask for whatever toppings you want. One of the best things about Five Guys was actually the fries - they actually taste like fresh potatoes! Not just some reconstituted starch-in-lard like you'll get at McD's or similar junk. Five Guys makes delicious skin-on fries that are crisp, flavourful, and juicy in all the right ways. Just the right amount of salt - and they even advertise where your potatoes have come from that day (mine were from Idaho). Drinks available were a bit unusual to my west coast tastebuds (they had Birch Fanta for example) but also all the typical Coke products. The only downside of Five Guys is the price. It is a bit expensive because you're paying about $5-6 a burger, which doesn't include fries or a drink. I think it's worth it if you really want some solid burgers and fries - they're really good. The staff was cordial and the place was clean (and filled up really quickly after I got there). Also noteworthy are the free peanuts (which I'm not really into), but the flipside is - stay away from Five Guys if you have peanut allergy. read more

Silly me didn't dress appropriately for DC weather, so when I got there, it was crazy windy and cold, and I was trying to run around in my cute, little 3/4-sleeve jacket (that doesn't even fully button). Anyway, what was going to be a trek to a Thai restaurant turned into my 20-step walk into Five Guys. I'd never had Five Guys before, so I thought this also could be interesting. I was slightly perplexed by the little burgers on the menu, but unsuspectingly, I just ordered a regular cheeseburger with fries. (Btw, $9 is bit much for just a burger & fries if I'm not getting a drink and consistent service along with it, but I digress. So is the nature of DC, I am told.) Anyway, when I got to the hotel, I was in a world of surprise to find this humongo double cheeseburger in my bag! I mean it was a pretty decent burger (well-seasoned, etc.), but I'm not so much in the business of having to digest beef for the next 239084 days. Nevertheless, I was hungry as crap, so I ate it and enjoyed it for the most part. The fries was pretty good too. Five Guys is now my standard for what a really great cheeseburger should be. They whop Bill Gray's butt and they make Charlie Brown's and others a distant second as well. True, they don't understand the concept of hot sauce. That's a sacrilege here in Rochester, NY where I'm from. I didn't know what the heck hot sauce was when I moved here a year ago. That strange combination of meat sauce on top of meat seemed really strange. Then it became a passion. We once spent an entire day with friends driving to more than 16 burger joints in own, having a fourth of a burger at each to determine what was really the best burger in Rochester (sadly, that place is gone and replaced by a really crappy Mexican restaurant but that's another story). But if you order a cheeseburger from Five Guys with relish, onions, mustard, ketchup, and hot sauce (their hot sauce is Tabasco or a version thereof) it really is the gooiest, messiest, greasiest burger that you'll ever love. I challenge you to it down after you take one bite. And of course the fries. The fries are a cut above (pun intended) the crap you get at the other burger joints here in Rochester. And the beauty about Five Guys is that their burgers taste the same no matter where you get them - a greasy McDonalds. Had one in Washington National Airport while we were on layover for a flight and damn if it wasn't just as good as anything I've had elsewhere. Overall: 4.5 stars I went here on the recommendation of a friend and have been back twice over a span of 3 weeks. I particularly like the ability to choose nearly any topping. My favorites include: jalpenos, hot sauce, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, ketchup, lettuce and pickles. Throw those on my bacon burger = pure heaven. And I 'm not quite sure what people have been smoking but the fries here rock and dare I say, even better than at In-and-Out? The free peanuts while waiting for your burgers to come out are a nice touch. I may like Five Guys better than In-and-Out...but I think In-and-Out is an overall better deal price wise. Being from California, I will spare the sanctimonious In-N-Out speech. You probably know where my loyalty lies. We have Five Guys out there now, and I like it just fine. I enjoy getting the bacon cheeseburger with bbq sauce and cajun fries. Delicious, even if it is far too much food for a human being. So why review this Five Guys in particular? This was the first Five Guys I have ever eaten at! I got the cheeseburger with lettuce, mayo, ketchup and tomato. I didnt realize that the regular cheeseburger had 2 beef patties on it! I read the reviews and some Yelpers call Five Guys the In-N-Out of the East Coast. Since I like In-N-Out so much, I couldn't resist trying Five Guys. My conclusion - I like Five Guys, but I LOVE In-N-Out. I ordered a Little Bacon Cheeseburger (not little at all), a regular order of fries and a soft drink. It's definitely fast food but it ended up costing almost $10. That's a little steep, don't you think? Anyway, the place was packed at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon and it was tough to find a place to sit. I finally got my meal and the burger was pretty good. I like that you can tell them what toppings you want on your burger. I asked for grilled onions but they weren't caramelized and delicious like In-N-Out's. The fries were nice and thick; however, I had several fries that were black/dark brown. I think that's the color potatoes get when they start to go bad. All in all, it was a good and satisfying meal and I know that Five Guys is no competition for In-N-Out. I love California. read more

This H St. location of Five Guys was my first experience with the burgeoning burger chain and remains my favorite of the locations I've tried. Unlike many of the other big DC burger places, Five Guys does not serve gourmet burgers but rather fast-food style hamburgers. And for fast food burgers, it is still hard to beat -- it is definitely on par with In&Out (although it does not quite reach Shake Shack levels of deliciousness). The beauty of a Five Guys burger lies in the customization. You can add grilled mushrooms or grilled onions, choose a sauce, or add any of a number of traditional (lettuce, tomato) and not so traditional (jalapeno peppers) toppings. All of the toppings are free and you can add as many or as little as you want. Plus the burger itself is good and the fries are crispy and come in a great big bag for sharing. read more

The burgers are pretty expensive but its worth it. Im from So Cal so i might be kinda biased towards innout, and im allergic to peanuts so i cant really eat their famous fries. (so... lol) The burgers were amazing, i got onions, grilled onions, green peppers, cheese, bacon, mushrooms, all with a1 sauce and mustard.. hmmm.... yummy The burger was cooked to perfection still moist and juicy, the toppings is what makes me like this place, also i did get some of the cajun fries and they did have a good seasoning but next time i think ill try the regular fries This place you dont get that old school happy days feel to it, it feels more like a burger place something like johnny rockets. So IMHO innout is better just because its simple, cheap, and filling. I expect great things from 5 guys. I stopped twice in 2 days for the familiar fare. Both times they screwed up my ingredients. I didn't mind the addition/deletion so much as I expected them to have their stuff wired tighter. The burgers were great, the fries outstanding and the Diet Coke was bubblie and cold. Okay yes, these are the closest thing you can get to in-n-out of the east coast. Now that that is out of the way, its also VERY different. Oh yeah, I'm a born and raised Bay Area kid, so I'd say I can make a fair comparison having lived off double doubles animal style through college. First of all the major disappointment here is pricing. Sure, $7 for a big burger chock full of options, a soda, and small fries isn't too bad, but I'd like it more within the $5 range. $5 just feels like a magic sticking point for price. Second disappointment is probably the bun. Yeah I seem like a burger snob, but its just that a sesame bun that is flattened and has no real give can make a difference...it just screams Costco buns. Bright spots - super customizable: bacon, relish, hot sauce, a-1, onions, mushrooms (FINALLY!!!), mayo, etc highlight the customization. I LOVE that a regular burger is actually a double stack burger....its a slap in the face served by five-guys to those health nuts eating burgers. I wish every place served "regular" burgers as double burgers. Thats right, if you are eating a single patty burger, you should be labeled as eating a "little" burger. love that touch. The fries, had potential. At first glance I was super excited by "cajun" style fries. The fries themselves are super thick cut and have the skins on the ends, which is a great touch. But cajun seasoning just didn't blow me away. Need more bay, maybe some cayenne pepper, and itd be perfect. Cajun spices gotta make my fries SALTY so that I can wash it down with cold cold soda. Service is quick, they take credit card, and the final product is very satisfying. Oh yeah, definitely get a sauce. But overall, I'm a fan of Five Guys. Its everywhere, so it must be damn good, and you know what? It beats a $12 burger at a restaurant any day. read more

I was pretty excited to try the "In'N'Out of the East Coast" on my trip to DC. However, even though the colors (red/white) and the interior design may have been the same, the food is actually very different. One thing that In'N'Out has that I was sad Five Guys didn't have was the Thousand Island dressing. I loved how you could choose what to put on your burger, and how the fries seemed pretty exotic. I'm allergic to peanuts though, so my visit was spent obsessing over whether or not I was near peanuts, if the workers had touched my burger after they touched peanuts, etc. Fortunately, I escaped unscathed and full after eating my burger, but I wish I could've tried those fries. read more

It's not In-N-Out, but it's pretty close! I think the only holding it back to reaching In-N-Out status is the bun (not bad, but not as fresh). The burgers taste fresh and the fries are fresh cut. The one thing they do have In-N-Out beat is the choice of toppings --for example some of the stuff they have that's a little more unique are mushrooms, jalepenos, bbq sauce, A-1, bacon, and hot sauce. Another thing to note here is that the portions are huge -- the junior burger is a single, while the standard is actually a double burger. I think the small fries are probably twice as large as a typical fast food restaurants large order of fries. It was so good that I came here twice when I was out in DC for the week. read more

I'm from California and I love In N Out. My friend who lives in D.C. told me I had to eat at 5 Guys while visiting her so we went on my last full day in the city. The Good: -Loved the options and condiments. I'm a big fan of BBQ sauce on my burgers and it's nice that they make that a priority. -Really love natural cut fries and their fries are quite good. Tasted really great when dipped in dripped BBQ sauce too! -Their burger was a nice size (a much bigger patty than In N Out which is a plus) and I enjoyed the meltyness of the cheese (is that a word, no? It should be!) Bad: -They don't serve milkshakes, BOO! Sometimes a lady wants to grub to her hearts delight and how is she supposed to do that without the third ingredient in the cheeseburger, fries, milkshake holy grail? -They are way more expensive that In N Out, like double the price! I don't know if that's just cause they are an east coast chain but they should remedy this problem. Those of us who are Californians like a good burger for a bargain! If In N Out is a 10+ then 5 Guys is a 9. I'll definitely check out another one of their locations on my next trip out east. read more

Stopped in before a Capitals game. The food was typical 5 guys, made quick and was good. The service was exceptional. The employees were extremely pleasant and helpful. One employee came out to sweep the floor and offered to clean off one guys table who had been eating peanuts and even brought him some ketchup. The employees working between 5pm and 530 pm should get some recognition for their great customer service skills. read more

My first visit to any 5 Guys Burgers. The bacon cheeseburger was wonderful. It was as good as Dicks in Seattle or In-and-out (but not better than thoes). The guy at the counter was helpful to the "noob" when it came to ordering. There are many toppings to choose from so read the menu before you start to order. These are great burgers. If you are in the area you should really give them a try. Being from Southern California - I LOVE In-N-Out burger but I have to say that Five Guys makes a better burger. I think the meat is better quality. The patties are hand shaped & cooked to your desired doneness. They have a great list of toppings to choose from - such as grilled onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, etc. The bun tasted fresh and the bread was soft. The regular burger has 2 patties - so if you want a smaller burger - order the small with only 1 patty. The fries are fresh cut and cooked in peanut oil - yum! The large order of fries is huge - the small order is about the same size as a large at most other places. They have peanuts to snack on while waiting for your food. I heard about 5 Guys when searching for places to eat in DC prior to my trip. It's good and service is friendly. But WOW, a ton of food! I'm female, average sized, but could have split my meal with someone. It was very good though. One tip--the regular sized burgers are actually double sized. If you have a smaller appetite, get the "Little Guy" size (I think that's what it's called.). Also, a regular size fry will be more than adequate. A little short on seating at lunch time, but it was a nice day and I just took my meal outside and back to the convention center nearby. read more

The burgers at any five guys is good though the service at this location was lackluster. I ordered my food online and was given a time for it to be ready. When I arrived, the cashier pulled up my order by name only to look confused and repeatedly ask the cooks where it was only to shrug. Finally the cooks take the order. Even though I'm from Maryland, this was only my second experience with the chain. The fries I got here were A LOT better than the ones on I Street--not undercooked and limp. I felt guilty eating at a chain restaurant, especially in Chinatown (even though it's not much of a Chinatown), but the burgers were massive and delicious. It's fairly priced for what you're getting. Probably one of the better cheeseburgers I've had in awhile. There was an excellent cheese to burger ratio and even the bun was pretty good, although nothing special. I loaded my burger up with only pickles but my husband had his "all the way" and was impressed with how tall it was after it came with all the fixings. The fries were fresh and crispy. A solid burger joint. Good beef, lots of available toppings, and yummy fries. I like simple restaurants and that's what you'll find at Five Guys. Simple but good. I haven't been disappointed yet. This location gets crowded at lunch time, so be sure to arrive before 11:30am or be prepared to wait in line. The cashiers are as patient as can be, especially with customers who stare at the menu for the 5 mins in line and then still don't know what toppings they want once it's their turn... Regular hamburger is 2 patties. Little hamburger is 1. You can't go wrong with Five Guys if you have a burger craving. There are several burger choices in the area, but this is my go to. read more

I love that I can get a Five Guys burger for lunch (for less than $5) and not be full for 8 hours. This is real deal beef and customization of your burger. The portions are HUGE so beware of the food sitting in your stomach like a brick all afternoon. I love that all of the toppings are free and the cajun fries are HAWT. Sometimes, actually quite often, I just want greasy fries, and Five Guys certainly gets that job done well. I much prefer this place over McD's or anything like that. But it's not the best place in D.C. to get a burger, of course. I agree with some of the other reviewers who said their fries can be a little soggy. I love the location of this Five Guys and how cheap it is. I really think they should suck it up and add a veggie burger to their menu though. read more
