Stopped by the Roaming Rooster truck today for lunch. I think the hype and press the truck got from the "fried chicken sandwich wars" between fast food restaurants factored into this, but the line was incredibly long around 1:15pm. I waited for about 40 minutes from the time I got in the line to the time I received my order. Not sure I would do that again too often, but I was caught up in the hype too. I ended up going with the honey butter fried chicken sandwich. They also have a buffalo, Nashville hot, and regular option. The menu also includes fries, drinks, pickles, etc. I only waited about 10 minutes after placing my order. My sandwich was hot and totally worth the wait. Once back in the office, I went to work and devoured this meal. The sandwich tasted so damn good. Ever since the chicken sandwich craze started and Roaming Rooster's sandwich went viral, I had to see for myself because I'm bandwagon like that. Luckily for me, the Roaming Rooster food truck was parked right outside of my office, so I finally got the chance to try it - because let's be real - their brick and mortar is not centrally located. Only one other person was in line ahead of me when I approached the truck at lunch time (~1pm). Everyone else was already queued up waiting for their sandwiches. I ordered the honey butter fried chicken sandwich (pretty self-explanatory but also comes with cheddar cheese) which cost $10 even. I'm assuming it was mild (you can choose mild, medium, or hot for heat level) because I didn't specify (and they didn't ask), and my mouth wasn't on fire. My sandwich was ready 15 minutes later. The sandwich is good. The chicken was crunchy and moist, as fried chicken should be. The soft bread holds up to the chicken while still giving it contrast. The cheddar cheese didn't add anything to the sandwich. The honey butter gave the chicken a hint of sweetness, but unfortunately there was a puddle of melted honey butter at the bottom of my container (but it was still good for dipping). Ultimately these components did not lead to a sandwich that I will crave. People have said that this is the best chicken sandwich, but I would argue that compared to the $3 to $6 sandwiches at Popeyes and Chick-fil-A, it better be. For $10, it is on the pricey side for just a sandwich, but the serving size is fair. I chose not to add on fries ($2 extra), but if I did, that would have given me two lunches. I still want to try their classic fried chicken sandwich, and next time I will opt for the fries. But until then, four stars. read more

Y'all - I am so happy to have eaten takeout from here! I went to college in Nashville, TN, and the fact that this place does justice to Nashville Hot Chicken brought my Southern roots so much joy. We got takeout. I had the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich -- for $9 a sandwich, the price is great. The sandwich comes packed with chicken (packed!!!) -- way more chicken than you would get in a Chick-fil-A or Popeye's sandwich (which are both sandwiches that I respect and love very much). The level of heat is definitely spicy (though doesn't compare to some of the hot chicken we had in Nashville, like Prince's chicken, where we were crying from eating the chicken). I have a pretty high tolerance for spicy, and this chicken was perfect for me, left some heat at the back of my mouth, but also had enough flavor to back it up. It wasn't just spicy for the sake of being spicy. My friend has a pretty low tolerance for spicy, and the medium spicy level was pretty hot for him, so consider a mild level of spiciness if you don't have a high tolerance, or even just picking a different sandwich (my other friend got the Honey Butter sandwich and loved it). The chicken meat itself was tender. The coleslaw is fresh, cool, and balances the sandwich beautifully. This isn't a review of the food--because I love the food, I truly do. I've been to the food truck before when it was at Farragut. I got there early--I waited 1 hour for food. At 10:36 AM today, RR tweeted that they were going to be at "#18th & L st." I'm like, okay. I ask if I'm at the right place--it's my third day working in DC proper, so I want to make sure. No response. 11:49--still no truck. I'm high key annoyed by now but ya girl wanted chicken, so, I waited and tweeted at them again. No response. Finally, at 11:55--35 minutes after I've been waiting out there--they reply. "Hey. Please check 20&L." Not "Sorry for making you wait in the cold--we messed up and we're at 20&L today!" Not "I'm really sorry, there was a miscommunication and we aren't allowed to be there today. It honestly just read to me like, yeah, you're cold and probably annoyed but we don't care lol, just walk over here and wait at the back of the line AGAIN for another hour while we make this food lololol bye sis. They replied to me at 11:55 to check 20&L--they didn't even make a general post until 12:23. That's insane. The twitter needs to post and pin a schedule of where each truck is going to be every week (see @swizzlerfoods). They need to apologize immediately when they mess up & be responsive. Drivers should know where to go--and if something arises, which is okay, it needs to be communicated back to the social media manager ASAP. Continue posting schedules daily--but it just keeps being posted so late. 10:36 is ridic when most trucks open at 11. The photos they add to the twitter are amazing tho!
