OK... I'm walkin' in DC last week and see this 5 Guys. I've read about this chain on the internet as being THE BEST. Personally, I was and still am an In & Out fan. The bacon-cheesburger was very, very good... but it was stuffed in the bottom of the bag and resembled a "ball of cheeseburer"! It literally was completely round? Is that normal? I also ordered regular fries and when I opened the brown bag, there were fries everywhere. They come in a cup, but there was also double the cup amount on top... of course the burger was buried on the bottom. The taste of everything was really hot and tasty, but the "presentation" if you will, was sorely lacking for a dine-in order. I have heard people call the "Five Guys" the "In-N-Out of the East Coast." Well, I am not sure what they have in common besides serving up really good burgers. But I'll use In-N-Out (INO) as a comparison point in order to help the my Bay Area Yelpers get a better feel for what Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries (FGFBAF) has to offer. Burgers: At FGFBAF, the burgers here are more expensive than at INO. They are also a lot bigger too. The ground beef in my burger was great. It was fresh, huge, juicy, and delicious. That's what she said! Special fixings: Ordering your burger "Animal Style" at INO loads up on lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, and Thousand Island. In the end, it adds flavor to your burger and I order it every single time. At FGFBAF, you have tons of options. If you just ask for them all of the topping options you get a burger topped with lettuce, ketchup, hot sauce, bacon, mushrooms, cheese, and just about anything else they have available to them. It's pretty freakin' sweet. Fries: At INO, the fries are fresh and tasty. At FGFBAF, you get the option of regular and Cajun fries. The former is tasty, the latter is amazing. I love the Cajun seasoning. For whatever reason, you never run out of fries. It is a super huge serving of them. I suggest if you come with people, to only order one serving of fries per 2 to 3 people. Also, I like how they list where the potatoes are from that day. A lot of meat joints tell you where the steak is coming from, so why don't restaurants brag about where the veggies are coming from, even if they are fried veggies? Soda: Pretty much the same deal at both spots: super sweet and full of calories. But hey, that's why I go diet every time at "fast food" joints. I am watching my figure. And by watching, I mean, just watching myself become fatter every single day in the mirror. Extras: At FGFBAF, you get free peanuts. It was nice to just munch on peanuts while I waited for my burger. Yum. Oh yeah, they serve hot dogs at FGFBAF. Unfortunately, no milk shakes though. Weird. In the end, FGFBAF is nothing like INO. Yes, everything you've read about Five Guys is true. Well, almost. A "small" bag of fries is big enough to give your cardiologist pause and shoot you a scathing look of contempt. The regular burger is actually two patties of ground beef, cooked to order with a nice selection of condiments to chose from. And, of course, the peanuts... opened, eaten and cast about the floor. Crunch, crunch, crunch. Does it go without saying that if you're allergic, Five Guys ISN'T the place for you? We don't need to see you swooning in line with an epi pen stuck in your arm just so you can order a burger. They aren't THAT good. But seriously -- since Five Guys gets hyped more then The Fray and Gnarls Barkley combined, just brace yourself for possible disappointment. I'm shocked to see anything but five stars for this place, but to each their own. This is unquestionably my go to place for love on a bun. It tastes like something I would make for myself, but better. The veggies are cold and crisp, the burgers are meaty and good. I have a dizzying array of toppings to choose from, but whatever I chose, it always ends up being a paragon of hamburgerdom. If an alien flew down in its saucers and said, "what is this hamburger you earthlings speak of", 5 guys would be our first and last stop. Their fries are even more of a stand out than their burgers. I'm sure they would bring tears to the good people of the state of Idaho. Now, I'm not going to hate on In-and-Out, they are #1A+ in the fast food hamburger racket. Once again, I must credit Yelp for alerting me to an eating establishment that I otherwise would not have known about. A few weeks ago, the NYC threads were abuzz about the opening of Five Guys' first Manhattan outpost. So when my bf and I came down to DC for a quick jaunt this weekend, it only made sense to try the real thing before seeing if the NYC version "lived up to it." (How else would we know?) When we found the closest one en route to the National Gallery of Art, I was surprised to see just how "no frills" it was. I knew that it was a chain, but I didn't realize that it'd have such a "fast food joint" atmosphere. Not that this was a problem since we were hoping to eat our meal quickly and be on our way. Without knowing the difference between the presumably "regular" sized burgers and the "little" sized ones (or bothering to ask), my bf and I just decided to order the regular sized cheeseburgers, both with mushrooms, his with mayo. If you know me, then you know that I like things cheap, or even better, free, so I was delighted that all the topping options came at no extra cost. Our empty & hungry stomachs also prompted us to order the large fries, which we later regretted once we saw just how huge a serving it was. The free shelled peanuts were also an added bonus, although I felt a little funny reaching into a cardboard box for them (I figured they'd be in little paper bags or something). It went against my usually super-hygienic sensibilities as I thought of where everyone else's hands had been before they, too, reached in. But then I remembered that the peanuts were protected in their shell, so I should just quit being such a worrywart. We waited a few minutes while they prepared our burgers and we perused the numerous reviews and "best of" lists mounted on the walls. When our burgers were up, they were piping hot off the grill. As soon as I opened the foil, the smell of the meat wafted straight into my nostrils and I couldn't wait for the first bite. It was flavorful and juicy, yet not overwhelming despite the two patties stacked on top of each other. A huge hulking hamburger patty may seem great in theory, but I usually start feeling bloated and grossed out two-thirds of the way through. This was a respectable amount of meat that didn't make me feel bad about myself afterwards. And the flavor was reminiscent of the Shake Shack burger, which is not a bad thing at all. I can't rave about the fries like everyone else has. I thought they were pretty good, but I kind of wished we got the cajun fries instead. I thought they lacked a little bit of salt/seasoning and got tired of eating them after awhile. We still had a large cup of them leftover by the time we finished our burgers, which was a shame since I hate wasting food but wasn't exactly going to carry them around the National Art Gallery with me. So now that I've tried the real thing, I'll be happy to see if the NYC version lives up to it. At the very least, maybe it'll help to alleviate the lengthy lines over at Shake Shack. read more

Hey I'm vegetarian but I still love this place because they make me a grilled cheese sandwich with a bunch of cool toppings (I esp. recommend jalapeno) and generous portions of spicy fries. Good affordable place to grab dinner on your way to the Warehouse or the movies. This was my second visit to Five Guys. The last time I was there was 2 and a half years ago. I am not a fan of the fries like other people I know. I did think the Bacon Cheeseburger was pretty rockin'. It is pretty cool that the fries come in a Styrofoam cup, the burger is wrapped in plain foil and it is all served in a plain brown bag. It makes it all seem less like a burger chain. I can see why people like Five Guys but I don't think it would make any of my "best of" lists. read more

I'm not a big burger eater, but Five Guys made me a believer. I held off for some time after moving into the area out of fear that this would make me a burger regular. I've still managed to keep my balance since though (phew). Their burgers are huge... I opt for the junior or whatever their term for it happens to be. They have buckets of peanuts which, while yummy, you should remember the massive quantity of food which will soon be coming your way before indulging in too much of... most places I don't get fries unless they're included, but here I feel like they're a MUST. The other day before work, I got to do something I haven't done in a very long time... sink my teeth into 2 patties of delicious Five Guys Burger. Bacon Cheese Burger with Ketchup, Mustard, Lettuce, Fried Onions, BBQ Sauce and Hot Sauce. Delicious. In my opinion (which, honestly, what is the point of this website, if not for opinion) there are two kinds of Burgers. Fast food, and Gourmet. Fast Food patties are generally thin style while the gourmet are usually fatter. There are ranges of quality within both categories. Gourmet burgers may be frozen. Fast Food burgers may be peppered. The difference lies in the way you prepare, serve, and eat the different kind of burgers. With that in mind, Five Guys is the single greatest Fast Food style burger I have ever had. You can taste that the patties aren't frozen by the way the meat comes apart so easily in your mouth, not like other chewy fast food burgers. And because the meat is so high quality, I don't mind that the meat is cooked well done (I eat my Gourmet Burgers rare) because they are still juicy as anything. And tons of free toppings. How do you beat that? Pile up the napkins and the peanuts and count me in. I'm not a big fan of the Fries. I'll stick with the free peanuts. And now, and amusing anecdote: Two years ago on the 4th of July my friends and I bought bag lunches in China Town before heading to the mall. I did the most American thing I could think of and opted for a delicious Five Guys Bacon Cheese Dog (also an excellent option, best Hot Dog this side of Bens, but not nearly as good as the burger), popped it into my bag with some peanuts, and headed to the mall. At the security check point, they searched my bag. They pulled out the iconic greasy brown paper bag. At first, they looked at me like I was crazy, thinking I must be carrying some bio-terrorism or something. But the guy next to the guy checking my bag looked over at the bag, and then at me. People will call it the In N Out of the east coast, but they're really nothing alike other than they have simple menus, they're everywhere, and people like it. The cost and taste are very different. Their burgers are pretty big, even the "little burgers" are likely to be enough for a meal. I like their natural cut cajun fries and all the sauces (A1, bbq, etc.) that they offer for their burgers. I had very high expectations before going there. The burgers were excellent - nothing fancy, just a great burger not too small or too large with generous toppings. The cajun fries on the other hand were not impressive. they were slightly burned, mushy and of a thicker cut. I am into the shoestring type. But the cajun spices were added to the fries after they were packed and bagged so the spices were only on the top and the other fries were sadly neglected. Not only that, the spices didn't meld in the fries becase the spices were added to order. Ask any chef and (s)he will tell you best way to season fries is to add the spices immediate as they are removed from the fryer so the heat cooks the spices. The service can be compared to a typical fast food joint but this place was very messy and dirty. Tables and were not cleared or wiped down. And the floor was covered with spilled fries and napkins. I recently had the opportunity to try Five Guys while visiting a couple of West Coast transplants over the weekend. Having both spent enough time on both coasts they were evenly split between who serves a better burger: FG or In 'N Out (she likes the latter, he likes the former). Our visit would make me the tie-breaker. Here's my breakdown: The burger First what i liked about it: the meat was fresh; they advertise that they don't use frozen meat and you can taste the difference (Note: In 'Out advertises the same). The ingredients seemed fresh (tomatoes, lettuce, raw onion, add ketchup), but i like how In 'N Out puts a whole onion slice that covers the whole burger versus chopped onions (more uniformed taste). Dislikes: the bun. While my pro-FG friend prefaced the meal by saying the bun was the difference maker for him, I agreed, but in the exact opposite context (i.e. not favorable). 1. It wasn't toasted on the grill, 2. There was almost too much bun that it dilutes everything else, and 3. it quickly became soggy from the ketchup (you're better off shielding the bun by putting something like the lettuce between the bun and ketchup. The fries While i like the fries with skins at FG, they serve them in a tall styrofoam cup which i think leads to the same observations about sogginess other yelpers have made. Nothing worse than soggy fries (well maybe cold and soggy fries). I don't know how fresh they are, but there's something cool about In 'N Out where you can watch them actually put the potato through the fry cutter and toss them into the oil to validate the freshness. This kind of leads into the other - some would say nit picky - details. I prefer the wax paper wrap at In 'N Out over the foil wrapper at FG (sogginess factor again); the open boat of fries over the cup, the toasted bun off the grill, and the overall experience at In 'N Out (the food theater, the simple menu but quirky ordering protocol, i.e. ordering a burger "animal style,"). I probably killed the suspense factor about a paragraph and a half ago but just to make it official: while FG serves up a nice burger, In 'N Out wins hands down in my book. My apologies to the locals but hopefully, it will inspire a trip to the left coast to judge for yourself. read more

Everything was yummy! The burger, fries, and coke was exactly what i was craving, and it was what i got! I love how the extras were a mile long, I added, lettus & onion to my little bacon cheeseburger. Just how I like it. The one order of fries was enough for the two in the party and perhaps one other homeless guy. is it better than In-n-Out? this burger left no after taste, as INO does. I'd say that it's better. The way that this burger is served, and cooked and packaged together, has more of a raw feel, which i enjoy. I have now been to Five Guys twice. I think it's good, but not great. Like many people, I am an In-n-Out disciple and will naturally compare all burgers to In-n-Out. I don't want a clone, but here is where Five Guys falls short for me: -There is too much bun. It's not soft, nor toasty. I ended up tearing off some of the bun from the burger, just because there was too much bread. -I like the cheese on my burgers to be melted. -I liked the variety of toppings, but I felt as though there were too many and they didn't come together well in each bite. I actually did really like the fries, and everyone was very friendly. Perhaps a third time will be the charm, but Five Guys just isn't "craveable" to me yet. read more

This is a sloppy hunk of beef (I don't want to know how the cow was raised quite frankly but I overlooked my organic, free range, nonsense to instead just satisfy my hunger and this place did it, although I probably won't go back until 2008 so my body can purge itself of the grease.) Cheap. Fast. Simple, no nonsence menu. (cheeseburger, hamburger, bacon cheeseburger, large fry, small fry, and some mini burgers) Greasy and bad for you. Amazing. Go here. read more

Five guys is always my go-to burger place for a quick and easy meal. I love their cheeseburger (little cheeseburger if it's just me; regular cheeseburger to share) and their cajun super hot and fresh french fries. Five guys has mastered the system of delivering a great hot and delicious product, every time. And I love the extra scoop of fries that they always put in your bag to make it feel like you have an abundantly full bag of fries (note to self: just order the small fries next time). After a sweaty afternoon run, we entered here and got our burger and fries to go. Chinatown has great outdoor places to eat your food. The most recent place I discovered is the great outdoor tables in the middle of City Center (right across the street). We enjoyed our food at City Center and watched people walk around the promenade. Forget In n' Out! Five Guuuyyssss is what a hamburger's, all about! Sorry In n' Out. I'll still come to you because you're very kind to me, but Five Guys gave me better hugs. Had to have one before leaving D.C., and so I took one to-go, for the airport. (To later find out that they have one at Dulles airport..). :) Their regular ones are double patties, and the "little hamburger" is one patty. I got the little one, with grilled onions, and an order of fries. Opened it up at the airport before boarding (didn't want to infest the cabin with the smell of ketchup.. you know how gross that can get), and when I bit into it, I caught myself "mmmmmm'ing" out loud. The bread. Oh my gosh! It's incredible. It's soft but so dense.. kind of like it may be a potato bread. The meat was so juicy and flavorful, and seasoned impeccably. The grilled onions were chopped onions and not very grilled, but they still were good. I forgot to remember that I'd be boarding a plane, and that onions were not a good idea. But they were a good idea, if you ask my tastebuds. They offer a lot of toppings, but I couldn't get anything that would create soggy-ness.. and they're not just your run-of-the-mill toppings. They have jalapeno, A1 sauce, and other fun things. The fries I ate were cold, so they weren't too good, but I know that's not the fries' fault. I still ate them, so that says something. They give you a lot, too.. and I think one order would be enough for two people who don't want to pig out. I wish we had one here! But I guess it just adds itself onto the list of the many reasons why I can't wait to re-visit D.C. Price: Good. I think mine was about $4, and with fries it ended up being like $6 or so? In n' Out is cheaper, but this gives you way more amount of meat than InO, and way more fries, too. Service: Wonderful! Very friendly and accommodating to traveling with a burger! Great place to go with great-tasting cheap burgers and fries. I've been to this one and the one in Tyson's Corner Center, and I like the hole-in-the-wall feel of this place better. For those like me with a smaller apetite, order the Little cheeseburgers and such - they're made with only one patty as opposed to the Regulars made with two. One or two patties might not seem like a lot until you had all the toppings to your heart's content. A little cheesburger with all the toppings turns out to be one hefty burger. The toppings are cut and made fresh and the patties are made right then and there. The fries are another great rave at this place. I especially like their cajun-style fries. Be careful what you order because their regular size is enough for 2, their large enough for 4. I usually get a little cheeseburger with lots of toppings and share the fries with someone else. A great hole-in-the-wall place with burgers and fries of good quantity and quality. read more

I really don't get it how people just rave and rave and rave about this place. I had heard so much about Five Guys. So, I thought I'd go and check it out since there was one near my work. I get there and I'm immediately put off by the peanut shells disposed on the floor. I didn't realized we were in Spain. (Of course, it is done with napkins.) Anyways, I get the typical burger and fries. The burger was just greasy! Ok, I know that all burgers are greasy. But this was just dripping greasy. It was like you had to be oh-so-careful or else your shirt is forever ruined by a grease stain. Their fries is one of those "Boardwalk" fries. In other words, you just might get a fabulous order of fries or you just might get soggy and undercooked fries. Well, mine just happened to be not quite done. HAD to stop by this place before catching the Bolt Bus back to NYC on Sunday afternoon. My mission when in DC is to hit as many Five Guys as I can. Usually, Five Guys is a "revelation in burgers," as dad put it. I ordered a regular burger with lettuce, tomato and grilled onion. I bit into it and looked around. Wait a tic, is this really a Five Guys? Yes, it was. Another bite. Good, but, eh. How disappointing, as Five Guys go. I even wished I hadn't eaten it when the bus stopped at Chesapeake House and I saw it had a Burger King. That's a horrible thing. ::Hangs head in shame:: This of course will not stop me from going again. I'm just saying. Better to go to the one in Georgetown or up in Dupont. But if catching the Bolt Bus, since you never know if the driver will stop at Chesapeake House/Burger King, get this Five Guys just in case. I'm from Chicago and Five Guys had just opened a location here, but as I already had a trip to DC. planned, I wanted to try Five Guys for the first time at the source, in DC (or Arlington). I got the bacon cheeseburger with everything. I'm not really a customized burger kind of guy and I thought this would be a decent measuring stick. Now, I understand that one of the appeals at Five Guys is all of the free toppings, but here's the thing - once you put ALL that stuff on a burger, two things happen: First, you can't taste the burger part of the burger, so it's hard to say how good it really is, and second, I ended up needing a fork to finish it as meat, pickles, tomato, and everything else disintegrated into a mushy pile on my tray. This made me sad. Overall, it's a good place for cheap burgers and fries (a lot of fries. A lot of fries). I can imagine that I would absolutely love this place after a few drinks...it seems like it was made for that scenario. read more

I was looking forward to going to Five Guys because we don't have htem where I live. Everyone is always raving about their burgers so we had to try the cheeseburger. It was large and have plenty of cheese and you could get whatever toppings you wanted. However, it tasted on par with Wendy's cheeseburgers. We didn't see what was so special about the burgers. "Five Guys is like the In-N-Out of the East Coast!" I initiallly had my doubts. You always get a better burger, but I have always maintained that In-N-Out was best burger chain. Before I actually had a burger a Five Guys I saw their signage about how fresh their meat was and now I saw the points of comparison between the two chains. These were regional chains that were limited in geographic scope because they will never freeze their meat. Their burgers were awesome, fresh juicy beef patties and absolutely loaded with toppings. I was pleasantly surprised that the jalapenos used were fresh instead pickled and that added a unique crunch the burger. I can do a point by point comparison of the burgers, but these burgers are more or less on par with the West Coast product that these are compared with. At this particular location, the fries were limp, but then In-N-Out fries are an accquired taste as well. A burger at Five Guys is a nice old school burger you might have once had at a mom and pop burger joint. That is, before they switched to frozen patties from Costco. read more

I used to work by the one in Chinatown so was constantly dragged there by co-workers. I have never been impressed with the quality at all. The burgers don't taste fresh and are overcooked and greasy. After feeling disgusting one afternoon, i decided to compare the nutrition information to McD's...interestingly enough, a Quarter Pounder is nearly 300 calories less than the 5 Guys burger (at 700). I'm not a health nut but that's unbelievable... The fries are the only thing that gives this place any rating. I can't justify bumping it to 2 stars but give i'd give it 1.5 if possible. This spot is my place to go to treat myself with a 5 guys burger. Its in the perfect spot near the Megbus depot, so I am always sure to swing by here to grab a bite after getting in or in picking up. Tonight, I went with the cheesburger and bbq sauce-a great combo! I had 15 minutes to catch my bus, but I figured it was worth the gamble and it all worked out. Five guys is an experience like Coney Island or the boardwalk. The interior is all flashy red and white checkered tiles and they call out order numbers like you won the lottery or something. But the food is nothing like boardwalk food. These burgers really taste like you made them in your own kitchen, minus the peanut shells all over the floor. Fresh meat hand shaped into thick patties fried on the grill. The fries are thick cut from spuds with their skins on and they always give you more than you can eat so plan to share a regular. For downtown DC the prices are ridiculously low. Now if only burgers were health food I could stop bringing my lunch to work. Do jalapenos count as a vegetable? My only complaint - not charbroiled. So a friend and I were walking around the White House doing typical touristy stuff when our stomachs began to become angry from being neglected all day. We started wandering around the area, trying to find something appetizing yet kind to our wallets. Luckily, we were finally spotted somewhere we thought we could fill up at. So I had heard about this Five Guys chain that was supposedly rivaled California's In-and-Out; being a native Californian myself, I needed to see if this were really true. Everything from that moment on was under intense scrutiny. The first thing I noticed was the price... $5 is a decent price for a burger that can have a ton of toppings, but compared to $2/$3 burgers at In-and-Out, this was hardly a bargain. In fact, a meal is about $5 as it is! I also decided to get the fries (I didn't know about the Cajun fries till it was too late!) So in my burger, I chose to have lettuce, tomato, mushroom, grilled onions, and ketchup. I would say that it was a good burger in itself. Although they weren't the best fries ever, they still tasted pretty darn good. The high price of the meal (or maybe everything was just more expensive in DC) was balanced by the large portions offered. I was extremely stuffed by the end of the meal. So in my overall opinion, no, I don't think Five Guys compares to In-and-out. Without that mindset, however, I had a decent meal and left pretty full...
