Since this place has arrived in swampscott I've been there a dozen times. Yes I've been to Fuddruckers, and that offers different things. With Five Guys there are a couple things that they do better than Fuddruckers. First of all, the fries are amazing! I mean they are straight up the best fries I have ever had. The other thing that Five guys does is speed. This can't be over-rated. They will make a burger with one of 25 toppings on it in 5 minutes. Although it doesn't offer you the options of medium rare etc, this is a quality burger (yes 2 burgers should be a regular!) And did I mention the fries? I love their fries! read more

Pretty good food, but not the greatest value ever. Went there around 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. Two people in front of me to order, so not much of a wait, maybe the newness has worn off? Seats about 55 people and it was about half full when I left. I got the single patty bacon cheeseburger, regular fries and regular soda for just under $10. Everything was tasty and well prepared but nothing extraordinary. If the prez hadn't eaten at one in DC I doubt I would have gone here. 9.5 on the cleanliness scale though, I counted at least 10 employees hustling about. I noticed a lot of families splitting burgers, drinks and fries and I think that is the way to go. For another $3 you could get the double hamburger and another soda and have an ample lunch for two. With the free peanuts you won't leave hungry. If you are looking to work up an appetite and then burn off a few calories, the restaurant is a leisurely 30 minute painless stroll from the Swampscott commuter rail stop. read more

I go to the 5 guys in the terminal at DC like 4 times a month, so I'm a fan. That being said, Swampscott is a work in progress. They have apparently hired every unemployed person in the town to work there, to the point where they're bangin into each other. There seems to be an air of whose-doing-what, but that's growing pains. On to the food. I'm a wipe-it's-ass-bring-it-out rare guy. Doesn't matter; they cook well done. Doesn't matter; you're going to love the meat-I've no idea how it happens, but it does and it's fantastic. The fries are simply the best on the planet. The only thing missing? Breakfast! The DC joint has breakfast and it's legendary. Eggs with bacon and whatever toppings hot in a fresh roll. That will be your only meal required until dinner. It's that good. C'mon Swamp...let's get goin on that! So don't fight your car when it tries to pull into the parking lot at 5's. It knows what it's doing! Remember, get the junior unless you're wicked hungry. My husband and I absolutely love this place. I always get the grilled cheese, so I can't speak for the burgers, but my husband definitely loves them. And the fries are great! They always give us so many that the two of us together have never finished a small. The only thing I wish is that they had more choices in terms of drinks and sides and maybe a veggie burger. read more

This place beats any fast food burger joint, hands down... maybe because they use real meat? However, there is a downfall to all glorious endings... it's messy! Was charged $16.51 for 2burgers, sm fry, med drink. They automatically charged me for doubles. I did not or want doubles. Manager gave me attitude. Trying to intimidate my friend and me. god damn it. i don't usually review chain restaurants, but i have to make an exception. this place beats out all other chains i've been to. (disclaimer: i have not been to the west coast for in-n-out burger.) each burger has two patties, cooked so that they're still juicy, and you have a smorgasbord of *free* toppings to choose from, including but not limited to: onions, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, relish, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, green peppers, jalapenos... ::sigh:: so awesome. oh, and the french fries, fresh cut and delicious. look for the board stating where the potatoes are coming from that day. as this place just opened this week, expect a little bit of a wait, and a tiny bit of "good burger joint" chaos. on a friday evening, for two burgers, and a large order of fries, we waited about twenty-five minutes. but it was worth the wait. fudruckers, wendy's, mc'd's, the king: all be damned. for 6 bucks, five guys got you covered. thanks for coming up to the north shore... you crazy five guys. read more

Nothing special, burgers are grill fried, not char broiled. They are well done, plenty of toppings, but I can't say they were outstanding. The fried are tasty, but, OMG, if you take em home, the bag will be Soaked with grease & moisture, which can make em soggy. Could do without the blaring music in the parking lot. Nonetheless, the free peanuts were my fav part, which doesn't say much. For the $, the Wendy's value menu is a better deal. read more

Great burgers but they lack consistency with their fries. Sometimes the fries are cooked perfectly and sometimes they are completely under-cooked. Sometimes you get too many fries and sometimes you get plain gypped. read more

As a first time customer, I was curious to discover for myself if Five Guys would become our go-to place for a burger and fries. In short, I'm not sure. The burger itself was fine. I appreciated the fact that I got to have it fixed just the way I like 'em: mustard (no mayo), pickles, onions, lettuce, ... We split a regular order of fries which provided a generous portion: more than enough for two people. Alas, the fries were not to my liking as they were rather limp, a bit overdone and extremely salty. The magical multi-option Coke machine was fun but not appropriately set: there should have been more fizz. (I am also unsure about all of the hands and fingers that were all over the touchscreen before I got to it that evening. Ick.) B reports that his burger was better than okay but that his chocolate shake wasn't anything special and definitely not worth the money. He also agrees that fries weren't as fresh as they ought to have been. All told, given its proximity to home, we're likely to go again -- but with the expectation that we would be there for just a simple meal, nothing special. read more

Oh my...I am still thinking about the yumminess of the burgers we enjoyed last night. I'm glad this place is a little hard to get to or I'd be in "big" trouble. I was thinking about what Lisa S. said about making a better burger on the grill, yes, it's true there are the amazing yummy burgers you grill yourself over real hardwood, etc., but I enjoy going out too for a good burger. And we had In-N-Out burgers in our minds which is a place we love and adore and always put on our list of things to do when in Ca every year visiting family. We thought 5 Guys was very yummy--pretty close to In-N-Out. Here's what we loved: Burger itself was very tasty with a nice crust and yet juicy. Bun could have been more substantial, but it was grilled and held the burger just fine until the last bite. We loved that we could have pickles ON our burgers (not beside it!! Bizarrely hard to find around here.), they put plenty of cheese on, grilled onions (like In-N-Out!) and may other great toppings for no extra charge. We both gave our burgers As. The fries were not the most delicious fries ever, but they were just fine--tasted like potatoes which we liked--were not overly greasy at all-- quite good in fact. I have always been a fan of Five Guys Burgers and Fries, but I have come to realize that the service and staff at the Swampscott, Massachusetts location is absolutely terrible. I am not one to complain much, but they have consistently messed up my orders. To give you a better idea, I would confidently say that 4 out of 5 times, they mess up my order, charge me for an extra sandwich, and or are rude on the phone. I have no idea what the hype is about. Went here yesterday to get a couple of burgers for my pooch and I. I'd been curious about this place since it opened and remember seeing a rave review on the television for this chain, so I thought I'd give it a shot. What a disappointment. The burgers had so much grease on them, it made the bun fall apart. I would describe them as a greasier version of a Wendy's burger. If you closed your eyes and took a bite, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The fires were some of the worst I've ever had. They were dry and tasteless. Like eating an overcooked baked potato. I ended up throwing half of them away because I couldn't stomach them anymore. Which is a good thing, because whatever is in the food made me sick the next day. I read some reviews about the one in Virginia Beach (don't ask me why) and a lot of people down there compared it to In-N-Out. Nothing even close. I've been to In-N-Out, Whataburger, Sonic, Checkers. They all make a better burger than this place hands down. read more

First let me say, my son and I are vegetarians and my husband is not. The first time we went there it was to let my husband get a burger fix. I figured I would "survive" a grilled cheese- WRONG! Even though it is a meat Mecca, the grilled cheese is no ordinary sandwich. My husband loves the burgers. We all love the fries and free peanuts. I really enjoy that fact that they know how to load a grilled cheese up with mushrooms, pickles, and tomatoes and make the whole thing stick together. I do wish they used cheddar instead of American cheese, but even the American cheese seems a little above average. I am surprised that I want to keep going back to a place with one vegetarian option (not even a veggie burger, like Fuddrucker's), but I do. It is far from the healthiest meal I ever eat, but it is thoroughly enjoyable. Having malt vinegar for the fries is just another simple touch of class, which I really enjoy. My son clearly prefers it too all other fast food. read more
