Many of my fellow Yelpers have lost their damned minds. Five Guys didn't just come to California to sell burgers, or to compete with In-N-Out; they came to do missionary work. Y'all best recognize. Also, since Five Guys is a chain, pretty much the same from one store to the next, my review for the Parkway Plaza unit is mostly a knockoff of one I wrote for Five Guys Hillcrest. If they can copy and clone, so can I. ****************************** A while back, Men's Health Magazine included Five Guys Burgers and Fries in their lists of "Worst Burgers" and "Worst Foods in America." Men's Health Magazine can bite me. The publication's beef (sorry, it couldn't be helped) was that both Five Guys' Bacon Cheeseburgers and their French Fries are too large, and that they contain too many calories. In their comments, Men's Health glibly disparaged these foods while making no representations regarding either item's quality or taste, all while neglecting to speak to the excellence of the company itself. So, while Men's Health Magazine is biting me, let me tell you how their snarky, we-know-what's-good-for-you attitude did a disservice to Five Guys. I've been eating at Five Guys since they opened down the street from my girlfriend's house in Arlington, VA, in 1986. The menu has changed only slightly since then, and at whichever Five Guys I've patronized, whether in the DC area or here, in California, I've found the food they serve to be consistent; always fresh, always gratifying, always an excellent version of what it is. Like every Five Guys I've visited, the Parkway Plaza store is generally clean and well-stocked, and the efficiency of its service fluctuates with the length of the lines out front, just as it should. More important, every Five Guys meal I've eaten has left me feeling that I gained value for the money I spent. The basic Five Guys Bacon Cheeseburger includes two fresh - never-frozen - hand-formed 3.2-ounce beef patties that are cooked to order. The meat is 80/20 ground chuck that's juicy, flavorful and uniquely... beefy. The patties are laid onto a fresh-made bun and dressed with two slices of American cheese and crispy, applewood-smoked bacon from Wisconsin's Cudahy smokehouse. The unadorned sandwich is a delicious, high-end version of a fast food classic. It's Northern Virginia's answer to In-N-Out, the answer being, precisely, "You wish." Ever the overachievers, Five Guys further distinguishes itself from its competitors with such a long list of free toppings that patrons can customize their burgers over 250,000 different ways. And then, though it's hardly necessary, Five Guys serves boardwalk fries, which, it must be said, are God's way of giving purpose to the potato. I'm pretty sure that the five guys who founded the chain grew up eating fries from Thrasher's in Ocean City, Maryland, same as the rest of us Northern Virginia boys who lived at the beach, come summer. I say so because Five Guys' fries have the same superb twice-cooked edge, the same toothsome interior and potato-to-salt ratio as do the fries that I grew up eating on the boardwalk (just after body surfing and just before kicking ass at Skee-Ball at Marty's Playland). All Five Guys lacks are seagulls, dive-bombing the fries of inattentive customers. If you've misplaced your taste for great French fries in vats of duck fat, under piles of cheese curds or amid the acetone whiff of truffle oil, then come, my friends; come remember quality; have a greasy paper bagful of Five Guys French fries (and a Bacon Cheeseburger), as Men's Health Magazine gingerly bites your buttocks. And as you do, and as they do, bear in mind that, of course, Five Guys Burgers and Fries are fattening. Aggressively so. They're 920 calories for the sandwich and 1,474 calories for the large fries. Yea, I've experienced better. In fact, I've experienced better from the same chain. Now, to start, Five Guys is not the best burger I've ever had, but the idea of picking and choosing condiments, with selections that include, e.g., grilled mushrooms, is unique. I've been to several locations, but finally had to review this one because of the consistent disappointment; which is to say the inconsistent quality of the burger. Let's start with the bun. It's toasted. Often, in fact, someone at the grill is watching people order and placing a bun down to toast as the order is placed. But toasting a bun, probably the easiest part of actually assembling a great burger, is different every time. Sometimes they golden brown, sometimes just warmed a little. And the meat, sometimes it's crispy and dry - almost burnt - and sometimes it's perfectly juicy. But the trick here is assembling something with a lot of toppings, without overstuffing into a mess that can't be held without falling apart. And that's where consistency rules, and this location fails. Lots of ketchup or just a little. Big scoop of mushrooms or one or two, fist-sized pile of lettuce, or one limp leaf. You never know! And sometimes the toppings can't even be placed evenly. (See photo; lettuce on one side, tomato on the other, pickles in a pile elsewhere.) Just went to Five Guys for the first time and got the BLT. It was pretty delicious, but I have to say the Cajun fries were SO GOOD!! They did get 2 of the 4 orders we had wrong though. There was plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor) so room wasn't an issue. You can even eat peanuts while you wait in line. They also have one of the fancy touch screen soda machines (vanilla Barqs) yum! Will have this place again for sure. read more

Usually we love this place and really enjoy the freshness of it. Our fries and service was great today but, one of our burgers was almost completely raw still. As well the other burger we ordered was missing the lettuce and had barely any grilled onion. I don't usually like to nit pick like this but for 30$ for 2 burgers and a small fry it's important to get those small details right. read more

Went in today 12/19/24 around 7:26pm and was helped by Maurice ( not sure if I spelled his name correctly, I apologize) I went in there with a friend of mine and we're having a great night until the employee was being a bit rude and seems irritated like he didn't like his job. It seems as he's tired of helping customers before me and was taking it out on me for ordering. It made me uncomfortable. As I order, I asked him what's the different prices between the one and the double cheeseburger, and answered me with annoyance. I know there's a menu behind you but you can't answer my question politely? .. He then asked me if it's my first time there and I said yes. He than asked if I wanted my burger to be cut in half and I told him yes and he reply ," you should've said that in the beginning ". If he's going to get bothered about my response, he should've never asked. I understand it can be hard dealing with guests but I didn't even do anything and received that treatment. I hope he's grateful for his job because I know there's plenty of people who would love to take his position. Dined here Jan 28, and my entire family got food poisoning. It tasted off to me when I took a bite, ate about 1/3 and simply couldn't finish it, I opened it up and the vegetables were soggy and gross. More expensive but better tasting than In and Out. The ingredients are more fresh and they offer far more options (like subway but for burgers). I ordered a single bacon burger with a ton of ingredients and they gave me a double. Even though this was a stop in the middle of a 6 mile run I ate it abandoning my intent to eat a light-ish burger. I stopped in this new Five Guys location at Parkway Plaza Mall. I came not to try one of their burger because I have had those before, but I came in to try one of their Kosher Hot Dogs. First time, last time. Perhaps the dine in experience would be better, but I'm not willing to spend another $15+ on a sub-par meal here. I'm giving this place 2 stars because some of the ingredients were quality (meat, jalapeños, bacon, tomatoes, fries), but unfortunately everything that was done to them fell flat or was just plain disgusting. 1. The Burger. Greasy af. Carryout was wrapped in foil, a sure-fire way to ensure the tomatoes become ruined and bread becomes mush. Glad I didn't order lettuce, because I would have had to toss the whole mess. Beef was definitely lean and medium, but had no flavor. Barely hinted at salt, maybe pepper. A wasted effort on good ingredients. Jalapeños and bacon were quality, but sparse and not worth the cost of adding on. 2. The grilled cheese was tossed on sight. Fake cheese half melted over ruined tomatoes on a super soggy sourdough, also wrapped in foil. Nope. 3. The fries. Being thrown all over the bag, which sopped up all the grease, is probably what saved these guys. Good seaoning here, but fries aren't enough to save a meal unless you're ordering Irish Nachos or loitering at a diner. Had rave reviews from family about these guys on the east coast. 3.5 about sums it up. Thanks to my boy Chris B, I now know that there is a Five Guys within 10 minutes of my house. Nice! Went to the movies at Parkway and then had some lunch at Five Guys. I ordered a cheeseburger with mustard, ketchup and onion and a "little" regular fry. Total was $9.90. Here is how the food stacked up................... Cheeseburger- Good...nearing real good, but not great. The one thing that I did not like was that they add the cheese to the burger right when they are taking it off the grill. They wrap it in their foil wrap and it does melt a little bit but I would much prefer them to stick the cheese on while the burger is cooking to melt it some. The meat is really good, decent buns and you pick your own toppings so if you are not satisfied with that aspect, its your own damn fault ;-). "Little" Fry- Five Guys fries are pretty damn good. Freshly fried and salted right in front of you so you know they are not sitting around. They are not the crispiest fries ever, but they are full of delicious potato goodness. The "little" can easily feed two people or one super hungry man. I still left a handful of them to waste because I was full. If you order the "regular" or "large" you better LOVE fries because they are damn near about to pull up the dump truck and unload some potatoes on you. The people that worked there were all super friendly and helpful. Overall I left satisfied. $9.90 is a bit steep for just a burger and fries without a drink. Will I come back..yes. I have been a repeating customer since 2013, and I usually have a great experience when I choose Five Guys. Unfortunately, today's experience left me feeling worse off than I came in. The older African-American woman working the fry section at approximately 12:50 p.m. has a serious attitude problem. Also, I am only using her ethnicity to describe her because I didn't get her name. I am a 10-year African-American Marine Corps veteran myself. I was order #35 and I was called to the counter by the woman. I noticed on the receipt that the bag was labelled #32 instead. She begins mumbling under her breath. I apologized by saying "Sorry, I'm only trying to help," and the woman snapped back by saying "Oh, you can't help me! You can't help me!", while staring me down. I was confused and completely taken aback by her response. I politely let her know that this is #32 and she released her frustration by disrespecting and trying to intimidate me. I didn't say anything back to her after that, because I didn't want to make the situation worse. The woman went back to mumbling under her breath and acting like she didn't want to be there. My day had been great before the event and my uplifting mood was even complimented by the man that took my order, but sadly, I feel like that interaction left me feeling much worse than when I had entered. This review is based solely on the welcoming of the store. I entered the store at 4pm and the lights were off but workers were behind the counter they guy who took out order (Daniel L ) yelled "we're closed" and started laughing assuming I didn't hear him he asked what we wanted and then the lights flickered on ... while we were ordering he wasn't helpful with the menu and was laughing at a coworker or friend who was taking his lunch at one of the tables (Im assuming) . It's burgers and fries so there's no way you can really go wrong. And they don't, however for the price, I guess I was expecting someone thing to make me actually go wow. I think the whole concept is wholesome to the fresh burger and fries made conveniently right in the front for you to see. They give you a tower of fries, no matter the size and complimentary peanuts. The Cajun fries were the best part of my meal really. The burger was good, but something irks me when the cheese in the burger isn't melted by the time I open it. And really in terms of flavor, nothing was too special. But overall it was a meh for me. The first time I had eaten at five guys was at Liberty Station and I am stoked that they had opened a new location at Parkway Plaza. I love the free peanuts and the ambiance, it's pretty slick. I am not sure if you are supposed to throw the shells on the floor but it seems like everybody was doing it so I did as well. The burgers were great since all the fixings you can add to your order. The burgers were just ok, nothing special but overpriced. My cousin was in the mood for burgers. I was really disappointed about how filthy the diner was. There were several empty tables but they were all dirty. The staff clearly doesn't care for the property and the sanitary conditions. We had to go outside just to find a table. We also waited a while for the food to be made. I also noticed one staff member doing all the cleaning while the rest of the staff just watched her and talked. Shoutout to these guys for adapting well into our current state of affairs regarding covid. They've closed the self serve beverage machine and instead charge you for a bottle of your preferred soda. Not going to lie, I actually prefer this better than having a working beverage machine. Diet Coke tastes much better in a bottle anyways. The portions here are killer. The amount of fries they give you for a large can feed three people. And the Cajun fries? The best thing on the menu. And shoutout to them offering grilled cheeses, my vegetarian self will forever be grateful. Yeah, the prices are higher than other places, but you're paying for quality food. This place never disappoints! The staff is always friendly and the food is freshly made. They use high quality ingredients and I love that they offer complimentary peanuts while you wait for your food. The French fries are really good and are always very fresh and HOT! They also give you huge portions of everything on the burger as well as the fries so it's a good value. I'm not a soda drinker but appreciate that they have the coke machines that serve over 100 different sodas and flavored waters. Be sure to save some room for one of their delicious shakes or malts! The only reason I didn't give this place five stars is they tend to play their music too loud and keep it a bit too cold inside for me. Other than that... I grew up outside of DC with the original five guys locations. Love them and I'm glad they made it out west. That's said, I am very disappointed in the significant price jump they have made for all of their burgers. Literally everything went up $2.50 almost overnight. The menu prices shown are way off. If we are being completely honest, five guys is fast food. There's no way I am paying $20 for a fast food meal (which it would be with fries and a drink added) when I can get a much better burger at a sit down restaurant for even less, which sucks because I actually want five guys but can't justify the cost. A friend and I tried this place for the first time today. She had a hamburger,cI had a hot dog we both had small fries. She enjoyed her burger with mushrooms and felt that the $20 we payed was way overpriced. When compared to McDonalds, Burger King, etc, yes but the quality and taste was worth it, the homemade fries alone. What my complaint is, who slices hotdogs in half? Spoiled the whole thing. The taste was good but trying to hold the two pieces together in the bun as its slipping and sliding around on a bunch of DICED onions, which are also much better sliced, just spoiled the whole experience. People who complain about 5 Guys being more expensive just don't understand this place. You are paying up for a quality burger experience. Aside from the fresh, above average meat and toppings, you get a larger portion of everything. Bigger burgers, overflowing fries, AYCE peanuts. And don't forget the fanciest soda machines in town, which serve dozens of different combinations of flavors. Next, the employees are friendly, and are allowed to have fun here. Then, they have a great selection of modern and vintage rock music playing which just might help change up the mood of any Mr. Grumpy that might wander in. They also provide malt vinegar to turn your fries into British chips. The place is kept immaculately clean as well. Don't tell me you are paying too much to eat here. First time here and I'm pleasantly surprised. Fast and friendly service, which at a burger place isn't always the case. It's clean, decently priced and made the way you want it. The down side? Well it's more then I would have liked to pay but all and all not too shabby. Next time I think I will try a shake. This time was just the humble burger and fries. Five Guys - where "little" doesn't have the same definition. And as small as your cup of fries is, you will always have 2-3x the amount overflowing into your bag! I was impressed when we came to Five Guys. It's not your average fast casual restaurant. All the employees were super friendly and genuinely seemed to want to help. Not what I would typically expect. As soon as we entered, we were immediately greeted by the cashier. There were a few others dining, but no line at the time. My order is the little bacon burger with ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoe, grilled onion, grilled green peppers. Peanuts are available, but I usually opt to save my appetite for the burger and fries. While we were eating at least two other workers that were in the lobby asked how we were doing and if we needed anything. Excellent customer service. Food was freshly made. I love the customizable burger toppings. A little burger has one patty, while the regular has two patties. One patty with toppings of your choice can be pretty big and filling. The regular fries is more than enough for two people to share. The fries are always over flowing from the cup into the bag. Two small burgers, regular fries, and two drinks will run around $20. AC is usually on pretty cold. Other than that, good fast place to get a good made to order burger. read more

What's not to like? I couldn't find anything! Unlimited toppings on Burger's!!!! I don't add anything bc they come great already. If you want a burger with more toppings then In N Out this is the place. (still love me some dbl dbl animal style add peppers) What I think sets them apart is the fries!! You can get them regular or Cajun seasoned and man they're both good and the portion size is crazy. You definitely can share a regular size with 2/3 people. Only thing that keeps me giving 5 is they don't really have combos (or I didn't see the option) other than that I will say and yeah prob get a lot of criticism for it I prefer 5 Guys over In N Out mainly bc the fries are so good!! I've been waiting a long time for a 5 guys to come to el cajon. This place is awesome. The main problem is its only about 5 mins from my house so its probably going to double the amount of burgers I eat in a week. I've eaten at this location about 5 times and every time has been delicious. All the employees are upbeat talking with the customers as they come in. Truth is this was only my 2nd Five Guys experience. The first one was at their La Jolla location, where the place was smaller but I remember getting our order in a timely manner. Here at the El Cajon one, I had to wait 20 minutes for my burger and fries! As I sat there watching my burger queued up down their assembly line just waiting there, I can't help but feel how exposed my burger was...well I understand they're backed up, there were a lot of orders ahead of mine, and they just opened...but even In-N-Out can churn out orders waaay faster than this. Still I do like the fact that you can pile on whatever toppings you want, and that they offer cajun fries...but it can get old, at least for me. And being there was just too stressful. Consistently superior to all other hamburger joints. Happy that most CA folks like that other place so it's not as crowded.

No seasoning on burgers sooo bland. The fries had barely any cajun season and also were cold and soggy. What a disappointment. Better off buying forzen burgers that you just heat up in the microwave. read more
