Look at this place- Red and white tile? Small menu? Large lines? Everthing Fresh, Nothing frozen? Thats no lie, thats what goes into- FIVE GUYS? No wait, isn't that In N Out's theme? There is no comparison This place is NOT In N Out! We waited in line. No problem. I thought wow-$4 something for a double cheeseburger? Maybe the last double-double I had was that much. What s the difference? The way I see it the In N Out burger patty is thinner but larger diameter. The Five Guys is thicker but smaller. What this means is a double burger "Loaded" is quite thick. How does this make a difference? With each bite of the Five Guys burger the meat is what you taste. On this burger the toppings are just filler. With an In N Out double double it seems more balanced. When you take a bite you taste each component. The lettuce, tomato, grilled onion (if you choose), cheese, and secret sauce. It is awesome. The fries are OK but not consistent. The order we had was about 50/50 very crispy and barely cooked. I needed ketchup with them (never needed at In N Out). They are only open till 11pm. No after bars business. I would certainly go here instead of McDonalds, thats for sure. Then again I would drive 50 miles to an In N Out instead of a Five Guys in Beaverton. read more

I love burgers, and I have heard about this place for a while. I am always on the search for the best. So far that has been Stanich's in Portland followed by Helvatia's. So when this place came to town I decided to go and give it a try. I am completely open minded to burger joints and if I can find one that is closer to me then Stanich's then hell yeah. Upon entering I was amazed by the sheer number of people coming in and out. This place was packed. It might of had to do with them recently opening but regardless the hype brought them all there. The place is oddly decorated with potato bags and framed stands holding them up all over the place. Upon coming to the menu I was overwhelmed by the amount of options you had for the burger. I have to say this was amazing. I do like it but with so many options I really should of researched this part more. I ended up ordering two burgers one for me and the wife and two orders of fries. Big mistake. We finally got our order and the burger was fine. I got my usual topping on it nothing out of this world but the burger was something similar to what we make at home on a summer evening. Nothing too amazing like I have gotten from other burger joints. On top of that the bun was rather soaked even after getting it right of the line and taking a bite while there at the restaurant, disappointing to say the least.. Now the fries. Holy crap, I have never gotten so many fries in an order. I must of gotten a couple pounds worth and they were alright but man oh man greasy. I am glad to see a place actually make their own so kudos for that but I will never again order another order. Overall I would love to give this place more stars hearing that most people around me really like it but I think I have been spoiled by other burger joints. I go out because I either want something convenient on the way home from work or school, or because I am paying for something I cant make on my own to the quality they're selling. The problem with this place is its nothing special. Its fine in a pinch or if you want something more then McDonald's or Burger King but nothing more. What's with all the yelling? The minute we walked in the door, an employee at the counter yells "Nine in the door!" at the top of his lungs-- not sure if he had miscounted (since there were 8 of us) or if this was code for 'hey, check out the hot chick who just walked in (NOT!)" Either way, I felt weird about it and judged that it was safe to enter despite being verbally assaulted in such a way. So we get to the counter after a short wait, and being new to the 5 Guys phenomenon, are trying to figure out how to order. Couldn't you just tell me (verbally or in writing) that the small is one patty and the large is two? Do the words "single' and "double" not explain better than "small" and "large"? Thinking the small was like a kid's burger, hubby and I each ordered a large, large fries to share, and two drinks. Set us back 20 bucks. Okay, I'm over the peanuts on the floor already. If your food's that good, no one needs to pig out on peanuts before eating it. God forbid you or anyone in your party has a peanut allergy-- guess 5 Guys is off your list. Also, I felt bad for the poor guy sweeping up the shells..... if we're supposed to throw them on the floor, why are we in a hurry to pick them up? More confusion. While waiting for the food, my ears were assaulted in 3 different ways: 1) the worker-lady clearing tables and dragging metal chairs around the floor instead of lifting-- to me, this is like nails on a chalkboard, especially while you're trying to eat/converse. HATE IT!!! 2) The employees screaming the order #s for pickup, with such volume and urgency that you feel like you'll get in trouble if you don't run up there to get them fast enough, and 3) classic rock (though I like it) blaring through the speakers. Sometimes a cacophony of noise does not add to the enjoyment of a meal, even fast food. It just makes me wanna hurry up and eat too fast and get out of there. Okay, the food: meh is all I have to say. The fries were pretty good (4 stars), they pile way too many into your plain brown paper bag on top of your order. (grease spots everywhere, eww) I guess it represents value to some, but for me, it's just wasteful. Like we don't overeat enough as it is in America. Threw about 1/3 of them away. The burger? Like a cross between your uncle's on the backyard grill, but with a frying-pan burned-edge effect. (3.5-4 stars, would have been more if I'd known what I was ordering-- I felt so rushed, I didn't even order onion, and I LOVE onion on my burger) Definitely thick and juicy, but not the best I've had by any means. How anyone can compare this place to In-N-Out (there! I said the forbidden phrase) is beyond me. The 5G burgers IMO are not as good, and I love my 'Light Well' fries at INO. In-N-Out just feels more sane, organized, less frenetic. The empIoyees greet you pleasantly instead of yelling at you. Honestly, 5G employees reminded me of the soup Nazi on Seinfeld. I felt like I was on speed the whole time I was in there. Also, 20 bucks seemed a little on the pricey side for our meal. I would expect to pay 15-18, but not 20-- and that's with no sales tax! One more thing I didn't like: the GIANT signs plastered all over the windows, with headlines proclaiming how good the food is-- if the food's good, shouldn't it speak for itself without all the hype? Since there's no In-N-Out in Oregon, we come here whenever we want burgers. The burgers are very good, the restaurant is consistently clean, and the staff is very friendly. Service is above average. It can be very busy, so its a good idea to order ahead using their online service or by calling in your order. The Beaverton location is consistently stingy with B-B-Q sauce, and so even if you ask for it on your burger, you'll have to get some on the side to put more on later. The Hillsboro location, on the other hand, is not stingy with sauces. However, the last time we ate there, they forgot to give us the fries that we ordered and paid for (my wife didn't check the order before she left). The big PLUS over In-N-Out is that Five Guys has BACON and B-B-Q sauce. Helvetia is better. In-N-Out is better. Sonic is better. Supremely disappointed overall. Atmosphere is loud and bland. Buns are cold and have no flavor. Burgers are okay but nothing special. The fry portions are generous but a little soggy and greasy which is signs of not keeping the oil up to temp. Frankly there are so many options that Five Guys offers nothing compelling to make you want to come back. It's not as good as it gets, only because I can do better at home... but... you're not always at home and a good solid basic meal is sometimes exactly what you need. The service is good, if not occasionally enthusiastic. The bathrooms are clean and the serving sizes are huge. Yes, you can spend $10. on a big burger, bigger fries and drink, but you could easily feed two people with such a meal. The choice of toppings for your burgers are awesome. Not into meat? They have a "grilled veggie" (from a list of your choice with or without cheese that can really satisfy the "herberous apetite". Free peanuts at the door are a little salty but good whilst waiting. If you don't eat all your peanuts, slip them under the nearby bushes, it will make the squirrels happy! Well worth the stop, sometimes you might want to wait until the lines are a little shorter. i came all the way across the country to finally eat at a place that was blocks from my former apartment... and it's still a-ok. for the price point, it's a darn good burger. they don't ask you how you want your meat, but you sure get to add a lot of toppings. and the fries... they're pretty darn good. i don't know when they started posting calorie counts on the menu, but knowing that i just ate over 1000 calories (i got the cheeseburger) in 20 minutes... that was kind of a downer. read more

i recently found myself in the beave with a friend and we were craving burgers. i decided to give five guys another go 'round and was pleasantly surprised. they appear to have scaled back the insane fries portion to still too damn much. as long as you are sharing with a friend this actually works out pretty good. the fries were much crispier this time, too. best of all, no more styrofoam cups!!! yay! that being said, i can't improve the star rating. it's still just an ok burger, slightly over priced, way out in cedar hills. bottom line- if you're already out that way, it's a good place to grab a burger, but i wouldn't go out of my way. there are too many other awesome options in town. read more

I'm not sure why people keep comparing In-N-Out to 5 Guys. Even though they are both using beef, it's a different animal entirely. For the price you will not leave this place hungry. It's a ton of food, which you have endless possibilities of mostly free toppings for. The fries in my opinion are so-so, but they are also definitely plentiful and one order can be shared amongst two people easily. The experience is usually fast and officient, and while I'd say they are upper end for fast food, it's still fast food. People should not even DARE put Five Guys and In N Out together in the same sentence... that's like an insult to In N Out. Their sign read "We cook our meat juicy and well-done". JUICY and WELL DONE do not belong in a sentence together!!! So while ordering we asked them to make the burgers Medium instead. Our response from the associate, "We HAVE to cook the burgers Well-Done". Any burger joint that requires the meat to be cooked well done is already a loser in my books. Meat should NEVER be cooked well done. The meat is already dead, don't kill it any more. Well the result of their policy was a burnt tasteless burger. I read other reviews that said they like it because it was crispy - honey, it's not crispy, it's BURNT. No wonder they let you put all the toppings you want on there. It's to hide the taste of the meat. I had to soak the burger in mayo, hot sauce, and A1 to make the illusion it was juicy. Helped only a little. Fries were okay. But I think Baker's Burgers fries are better. Nothing to rave about but at least it wasn't burnt. Overall, eating this Five Guys burgers makes me appreciate how yummy an In N Out burger is. Went to my first Five Guys when visiting DC a few years back while living in California. This place has one countless "best of" polls across the country. Was excited to see it come to PDX (even though I'll go maybe once every month or two). I'd give that DC experience 4 stars even while sitting on stool in the corner of the packed joint, and I gotta stick with the 4 @ this location too. The wait really is insane though. If you're in a hurry Five Guys is not for you. But if you're not, just sit back and watch everyone else get frustrated as they wait for their orders.
