I ordered the lamb kebab platter, it was cooked to order. The lamb was delicious marinated well and not fatty. The platter is served with rice, red cabbage, lettuce/tomatoes. The new Norfolk location of 5 Boroughs Restaurant opened quietly last month in October. I first noticed their signage and construction work back in August. I walked by it again about two weeks ago and noticed their Open sign. This came as a surprise, as I had no idea it had already opened. Although I was walking to a different restaurant, I popped in and asked how long they had been open. "About two weeks," a friendly server told me. So, I decided to stay for my first meal and received a complimentary bottle of water. It is located at the former Ghent location of the Carolina Cupcakery, situated in a small parking lot to the immediate left of the Verizon store at the intersection of Colley Avenue and 21st Street. A Subway is stationed to its left. The parking lot appears to be in need of some refurbishing and can be a bit cramped. I've been parking on a nearby side street during my visits. This is an expansion and second location of a Mediterranean restaurant that first opened on High Street in Portsmouth in June of 2016. The owners are a married couple who are natives of Jerusalem and former classmates. An article from the Virginian-Pilot last year provided some interesting information about their background and how they brought their Portsmouth location to fruition. Otherwise, their menu is very flexible with offerings for a broad base of tastes. In addition to their Mediterranean selections, American favorites such as burgers, Kosher foot long hot dogs, and New York style subs are available. Their menu also includes some vegan friendly options as well. New York style pizza has long been available at their Portsmouth location, but is not yet available at their Norfolk location. I was told during my last visit that it will be arriving soon. Upon entering, you turn to the left and walk to the counter where you place your order. A bakery display case offering Baklava and other goods is at the immediate right. You then take a seat as you wait for a server to bring your order. The interior is bright and airy with a lot of natural light. Their ceiling lights are covered without any exposed light bulbs casting unwanted sparkles upon the food photos I have taken here so far. So far I have tried the following: HUMMUS & LAMB WITH PITA BREAD: Although listed as one of their Appetizers, a huge serving is provided with the Pita Bread served on a separate plate. This is a meal in itself. The hummus was creamy and delicious. But some of the lamb pieces were gristly and chewy. My Rating: 3.5 Stars. TOUBLY SALAD: As spelled on their menu, this appears to be their variation of Tabouli Salad. which is a Levantine salad containing bulgur wheat, finely chopped parsley, onions, and tomatoes. The presentation was bright and colorful with a very generous portion size. For my tastes, the amount of bulgur wheat was lacking in proportion to the other ingredients. I could barely taste the wheat. The parsley, which more resembled lettuce, was chopped up rather coarsely. Overall, this was not quite the Tabouli salad I am used to. Otherwise, the flavors of the other ingredients came through nicely. My Rating: 3.5 Stars. CHICKEN SHAWARMA PLATTER: This one comes with a generous portion of chicken, along with red cabbage, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, pita bread, and hummus. The flavors of this one popped nicely. The chicken was tender and delicious. The red cabbage and other veggies added some nice contrasts in flavors and textures. The hummus was especially creamy and was topped off with a delicate and flavorful mix of olive oil and lemon juice. My Rating; 4.5 Stars. Note: The next dish was even better. SHISH KABOB LAMB PLATTER: This is the best dish I've had here yet The lamb slices were grilled to a nicely crunchy texture and delivered an extraordinarily delicious flavor without any gristle whatsoever. The other ingredients were identical to those listed in the Chicken Shawarma Platter above. Once again, their tastes and textures came through with flying colors. My Rating: 5 Stars. Overall, I think the Norfolk location is off to a solid start, and I believe it will get get better over time as they work out a few kinks. I see a lot of upside potential here. I will be looking forward to my next and future visits, especially when their pizza arrives. read more

The husband and I stopped in this past Friday around 8pm while we were waiting on our table at Luna Maya (across the street). I was famished and needed fast food to hold me over as LM had a 30 minute waiting time. Please don't judge. (I'm pregnant and the baby's gotta eat). I love lamb and was super excited when I saw it was on the menu. I opted for the lamb shish kabob and shared the 2/$5 pizza slice deal (which comes with a beverage) with the husband. I have to admit, it wasn't "fast food" as it took approximately 20 minutes to get our meal. But I appreciated that it tasted fresh. The husband rated the pizza slice a 6. I would rate it closer to a 7. It had slightly too much sauce and the crust was "just okay." All in all, the slice of pizza got the job done. The lamb on the other hand was excellent--very flavorful and juicy. I would definitely come back. The space was relatively clean, the service was good, and the food was pretty decent based on what I tried. read more

Very nice and clean and convenient parking which is a plus in Norfolk. I decided to try the lamb pita and tabouli. I was told they make their own pita bread here but that was wrong. You can buy pita bread except the ones they gave me were not the ones showed me at first. Kind of a mix up they were out of the pita bread I really wanted. They did offer a refund but I took them home anyway they were frozen. The Tabouli did not have any pita bread with it so I had to thaw a piece of the wrong pita and it was tough and chewy. I guess I should have taken the refund. That was my mistake for not accepting the refund. The baklava looked delicious and they had trays packaged that were not very expensive either. My lamb pita waa amazing that was the only thing I enjoyed here today. Update: The owner did reach out to me and offered to make the pita bread right. You can really appreciate the attention they give to their business I updated my review because I will go back for another Lamb Pita because the second half was just as good when I finished it later in the day. read more

I'm wondering if this location is related to the Five Boroughs in Portsmouth. I gave that place two stars. Nevertheless, I'm giving this restaurant 3 stars. It was good- not great. I had the lamb platter and not sure it was any better than something I could have done at home. We took it to go and when I got home I added Feta. It needed the salt. My husband had the lamb wrap and found the wrap hard to chew. It's hard to eat out and not compare to other restaurants. Honestly, I don't love any Mediterranean food in town. I came back in the next day, after speaking to the owner. He reached out to me and was so kind. He gave me a fresh order that tasted really yummy, and looked amazing. He also gave me a free whole order of baklava for the issue. I'm glad I gave it another chance. I plan on coming back when I need my chicken over rice fix. Went here to grab a pizza and was pleasantly surprised at their offerings. We ended up with a mashup of falafel, tabouli, pizza, wings & garlic knots. Not only is the food solid here, they are quick and didn't leave a thing out. The falafel was my favorite and I was left wishing I would have gotten something larger than the 4 piece. They have many middle eastern grocery offerings in the front of the store where I picked up some pitted olives. Definitely check them out next time you are in the Ghent area or if you are looking for halal offerings! read more

The vibe of 5 Boroughs is very modern and once you walk in, you make a left into another room to order. 5 Boroughs is more of a casual dining place, however, their service is amazing. The food here puts every Mediterranean restaurant i've had thus far, to shame. I ordered to beef kabob platter combo, which includes fries and a drink. My mom and I were nearby and decided to finally try this place after hearing about it from several coworkers for months. After initially wanting their $5 pizza lunch special (a great value especially for the area), I decided I would go for the chicken pita after seeing some of the food prepared for other customers. I had imagined it would be like a Greek gyro, but even though it was not, it still went beyond my expectations as one of my first forays into middle-eastern food. My mom ordered their philly steak sub. For approximately $25 we received two great and complete meals with generous portions of vegetables, meat, fries, and a large bottled drink. Ordered Chicken and lamb platter. The meat is served over jasmine rice and some noodles with cut up romaine, slices of beefsteak tomatoes, and pickle slices. The chicken has more flavor than the lamb. I've had better lamb. We ordered spicy, and if that was spicy, I wonder what plain is...The pickle added a different flavor, but my sister and I enjoyed it. I always love coming to 5 Boroughs! I also always choose from their Mediterranean options. Their lunch combos provide PLENTY of food; I tend to need to-go boxes! A welcome addition to Colley Avenue. I'm Middle Eastern so as you can imagine I'm extremely picky about our cuisine. They have a little market inside where you can buy Mediterranean goods and groceries. The staff is very polite and accommodating. We've dined in and ordered takeout many times and our orders have always come out fast, fresh and delicious. The falafel wrap is amazing and extremely generous. You can choose between regular and spicy. My 7 year old is very picky and asks for it regularly. My husband enjoys the falafel burger. Their pizza is awesome too. Authentic Middle Eastern food with a great price point. There's another gimmicky "Middle Eastern Shawarma" restaurant up the street but Five Boroughs gets our vote any day. read more

I honestly can't believe I forgot to write a review for this place. I've been meaning to say thank you. I work in communications for Sentara and field all calls for all of Sentara. My coworkers and I were surprised when we received pizza from you. It was when Covid was pretty nasty. We were all over worked and understaffed (still are). It was a nice pick me up for our tummies and emotions. Overnight we went from phone operators to pretty much therapists. We were crying a lot. Oh and the pizza is phenomenal. I always compare pizza to the ones I had in Brooklyn as a child. Your pizza is as close as it gets. I wanted to be selfish and take more, but we all had enough to go around. The food and the staff are amazing. Food was hot, fresh, and had just enough spice on it. The staff was very friendly and gave my buddy and I recommendations during our lunch. After food was given to us, the staff would come in and check on everyone and make sure everyone's food was great or if there was something they could do to make the experience better. One of our new staple Norfolk spots for food! It is a good alternative to Mr. Shawarma as 5 boroughs serves lamb which Mr. Shawarma does not. We've had both the lamb shawarma and the kabob/. Both are very tasty but I like the shawarma much more. I always ask for my platter to be made without pickles because I do think it adds a bit of a weird flavor profile. Also the HUMMUS! It tastes like gourmet homemade hummus and I'm obsessed with it. They give you a large amount on the side and it's so good I'll even eat it on it's own (which I never do). They also give you some flat pita bread on the side which I'll use to dip in the hummus as well. The rice on the side is also delicious! I'll definitely miss eating meals here when I move :( read more

So I have eaten at the Portsmouth location many times and really enjoy it. My wife and I were out running errands so we figured might as well stop in for lunch. First things first this location is much smaller than the Portsmouth location and has a smaller menu. That being said I ordered the Chicken Shawarma and my wife had the Cheese Steak. We felt they were both good and we would come back and eat again just because we don't have to go through the tunnel to get here. I have to say that I did order mine spicy and it was lacking the heat that I have become accustom to at the other location. When I go back I will just ask for extra spicy and see how it turns out.
