We've been meaning to come to fishmonger and finally made it! We went for a birthday celebration. I did not make a reservation, they estimated about a thirty minute way, however two bar stools opened up right on time for us! I love the vibe in here. You walk in and can see the raw bar and part of the kitchen. All of the staff welcomed us in and were very friendly. The restaurant feels like a fish market with the open concept. I liked how it was nice and high quality food and drinks, without being too fancy. That makes it so much easier to enjoy a good meal without dressing to the Ts. I opted out of getting a drink this time, but they had three Floyd's canned beer which my boyfriend ordered. It was good and they did serve it with a glass which is always appreciated. We both ordered the grouper sandwich (mine with no bun) and then shared the hamachi crudo. The crudo was delicious, but the hibiscus sauce was slightly over powering in my opinion. I really liked the sauce, I just prefer to be able to taste the fish a little bit more. The fish itself was very good. The group was huge! (Yes we both ate the entire thing). But we decided to give it another chance & we're so glad we did! This time the experience was completely different. The place is a little tucked away at the Neuhoff development and the sign isn't the easiest to read. However, it's a nice place and we sat outside since the weather was nice. I popped over to Fishmonger on a Sunday evening about an hour before they closed early due to selling out of most of their menu (for good reason!). The main purpose of my visit was to sample the heavenly cocktail The Abuelita, which is a spicy & delicious iteration of the classic espresso martini. Fellow Yelpers & besties Amanda M. & TJ M whose drink recommendations are NEVER to be ignored accurately hyped this cocktail. While holding the bar down we snacked on the smoked fish dip & shared a platter of raw oysters. I haven't eaten a raw oyster in probably 15 years & although a novice in the area, I was impressed with the freshness of what I had. We were seating outside, which was nice, but the music was right behind my wife's head, which wouldn't allow us to have conversation.....too loud AND the music was crude and obscene! It is slightly hard to find since the storefront isn't on the pathway but tucked back into almost an alley. The fish was clearly fresh, perfectly crunchy, well seasoned, and thankfully not dry. The cucumber salad was a delight, though it leaned a little on the sweeter side. I really wanted to like this place and I'm going to give it a generous 4 Stars and I'm being very generous, because I want this place to stay open. The tuna tartare wasn't very special. The crostini was a little stale and you taste everything else EXCEPT the Tuna. I think it was just lost in the sauce. The grouper sandwich that everyone talks about NEEDS some kind of Aioli or Remoulade to make it great. It's ok as is though but no one wants OK.
