It was our first visit and we were unfamiliar with the menu. So we didn't know what to order. Our waitress was very nice.. I ordered the Mixed Grill. The presentation was beautiful. I enjoyed the nice and big succulent fish and it was grilled perfectly. The scallop shrimp skewers were delicious and had a nice seasoned spice on them. My husband enjoyed a bowl of seafood chowder. I ordered the delicious truffle and basil risotto which could feed up to 4 people. We probably will go back but only on special occasions due to the cost. But its understandable since some of the meals contain seafood and choice meats. We has no cocktails and just had water. The final cost was just under $50. I've been to Fish Bones a few times in the past, and recently had the opportunity to visit again after buying a gift certificate in an auction for the Theater at Monmouth - thanks, Fish Bones, for supporting local arts! My husband and I went for an early dinner, and made a reservation just in case - this place tends to get packed at around 6 until the end of the evening. We split an app - the Asian-inspired Crispy Calamari - which was really delicious. The "tentacle" part was especially exciting - what a satisfying crunch! For dinner we both had steak - my spouse had the Strip Filet and Shrimp, and I had the Mill Street Steak Salad. Both were really good, though I thought my salad was a bit overdressed, could have used more vegetables, and my "medium well" steak tips were definitely well done. The cabbage and green bean veggie of the day that came with my husband's meal were delicious - the cabbage especially was tender and flavorful. For dessert we shared the creme brûlée and the (OMG) caramel cheesecake. Both were out of this world. I was in town for work and wanted to grab a quick bite with a colleague before he headed to the airport. Fish Bones was recommended to me by a local so I looked forward to trying it out. My star rating below: 1- star for the excellent service from our hostess and waitress. Everyone at Fish Bones was friendly and welcoming. 1-star for the bread basket. OMG I don't even know how to describe how awesome the breads were. They offer it, so definitely take them up on it when asked. The zucchini bread, sourdough and focaccia are amazing. I believe the breads are baked in house and their freshness shows. They also brought softened butter which even as a little thing, makes a huge difference in the experience. 1-star for the location and ambience. Given that Lewiston is a small town and I wasn't sure of the options available, it was really pleasant to be able to walk down the street from my hotel and walk to lunch. The space is large and airy and has a lot of windows with natural light which I love. 1-star for the lobster bisque and Cesar salad. The bisque was creamy and rich with a nice lobster undertone that complimented the focaccia and sourdough. My salad was crisp and flavorful and had the prefect balance of greens to dressing and my chicken (and addition) really worked together. I highly recommend Fish Bones for a lovely meal if you're a visitor or local. You can tell the freshness of the food and the service is truly a gem. My family and I came here last night for my cousins bday celebration. We had good vibes as soon as we got here and learned that the building housed the first place of employment in Maine! Cool history. The smoker was on and the smell was delightful. We were seated at a nice large table and were immediately greeted. We had our drink orders placed and looked at the menu which had more than a few dishes I had to try. We ordered the cauliflower pizza as an appetizer as well as the Brussels sprouts and smokey ribs. Everything was great including the wine. Excellent. We all ordered different dishes and tried each others. I had the haddock and omg wow is all I can say. The exterior of the building and the inside were beautiful. The restaurant was a little more upscale than your normal everyday place. The service was extremely friendly and the food came out quickly. I ordered the lobster bake, which included a lobster roll, chowder, fries, and coleslaw. Everything was pretty good. The lobster roll had big chunks of meat and looked the part, but it just didn't have a ton of flavor. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as much as I hoped for I guess. I've heard about Fishbones forever and ever and ever, and have always wanted to go. I'm hardly ever in Lewiston anymore, so I was overjoyed that my cousin and my aunt wanted to go here for a late lunch/early dinner. It's outstanding that Lewiston is coming around so much as to have this caliber of fine dining. We walked in to Fishbones, and were the only people in the restaurant - understandable, it's the day after Christmas, and it was 3:45pm. My dad told me, however, that last time he was at Fishbones, it was also pretty empty. Considering the economy and the fact that this restaurant is fine dining, I get it - but it's just unfortunate, because Fishbones is Excellent. We sat at the bar, just because this was a casual occasion, and ordered a few drinks as well as dinner. The drinks were good (my cousin and I got some sort of peach schnapps thing in honor of my grandmother), and I really enjoyed the clam chowder cup that came with my meal (my aunt and cousin got salads, but um, no way am I passing up Maine chowdah while I'm here...). We all ended up wanting the scallops, but to shake things up a little, I ordered the "fish n chips" - which was grilled haddock, sauteed spinach, and garlic mashed potatoes, with a crispy potato hashbrown type thing on the top. It was really very, very good, but the scallops were outstanding. I'm convinced that scallops are the world's most perfect food. My aunt and my cousin both shared their scallops with me - Perfection. They came with butternut squash risotto with dried blueberries, and grilled asparagus. Outstanding. The overall affect of the restaurant gets me right in my heart. It' so beautiful - exposed brick and pine wood beams everywhere - so warm and so, so homey. This is exactly what I think of when I think of all my warm fuzzy memories of home. We stopped in for lunch on a Friday while waiting for a nearby jeweller to resize a couple of wedding rings. It was a little after 2pm, so not too many patrons and plenty of seating available both inside and out. We chose inside. Good, prompt service. Brussels sprout appetizer was very good. My wife had the Vietnamese slider sandwich and enjoyed it (as I did too when she gave me a bite). She pronounced the accompanying pickles the best she's had (we learned they're obtained rather than made in-house). I had a cup of the seafood chowder and the haddock & chips, both excellent. Our meals included french fries, and these are definitely superior to the usual fries. Prices are reasonable, and I look forward to visiting again when I'm in Lewiston. read more

First of all, let me start by saying our waitress provided excellent service tonight. That being said, I believe there were quite a few things that could've improved our dining experience. The restaurant was packed when we arrived, and we were warmly greeted by a hostess. It wasn't long before we were seated, and that was when we noticed how exceptionally loud the dining room was. My goodness, there were two large tables in the center of the room, and the guests were practically yelling and laughing at the top of their lungs. I didn't think they could get any louder. The noise was really disturbing. I'm fairly certain that if they'd adjusted the seating arrangements, the noise could be somewhat reduced. We had a poutine for appetizer, and after that, we waited a very long time for our main courses to arrive. My wife was starting to wonder if we should just leave. Finally, after 40 minutes, the main courses arrived. Fisherman's Stew for me, and Duck Breast for my wife. She enjoyed her dish thoroughly, while I thought the cod was a bit overcooked and the mussels were remarkably small. It would also have been nice if I was provided a bowl to place the shells in. The poutine was a little too salty, but not inedible. Overall, I believe the pricing was a bit expensive for the food to bear such a quality. You pass a relic of the early Industrial Age, a factory where maybe you see a flower springing up out of what had been a foundry floor in days gone by. Fish Bones American Grill is that kind of flower: A classy, tasty, innovative eatery in the middle of a converted textile mill that is ground zero of a rebuilding Lewiston. It just screams positives. Most of which begin and end at the food and the bar. Fish Bones serves up beautifully plated, thoughtfully prepared dishes that are as good as you would find in any city ten times the size of Lewiston. My daughter tried the "fish and chips" because, thankfully, it's grilled with a thin crunchy potato pancake topper to remind you of that fried feeling without the billion calories and the greasiness. I had the seafood pasta fra diavolo, which, pleasantly, was perfectly spicy, and had the most tender Maine mussels I've sampled to date. When most restaurants whimp out with the red pepper flakes, the chef here knows where the line is. The "grilled" Caesar salad was also a nice take on the classic and had a pleasant twist with its quickly grilled lettuce. The bar has a really nice selection of spirits, including several good choices in Kentucky bourbons, which are the brave new world of fermented discovery. Prices were reasonable for what was served up. Experience was exceptional. Wait and bar staff were both top-drawer. With kids going to Bates College nearby, I'll be back! read more

I had one of the absolute best meals I have ever had in my entire life here. It was absolutely phenomenal. I had the Atlantic Fishermen's Stew and my dining partner had Chef Tony's Smoked Brisket sandwich. I didn't try her sandwich but she really enjoyed it. My stew my incredible. Prices are high on some things but I expected it going in. Their starter menu is great also and priced great as well. Restaurant itself is really nice. Was very impressed by this converted riverside mill below the Baxter brewery. Outside seating has comfortable couches and propane fire pits. Inside has the exposed brick, brass and restored flooring you'd expect. The food has real contemporary vibe and what was sampled was astoundingly good and very inexpensive given the quality of ingredients: mussels with shaved Parmesan, Korean BBQ style wings, ahi tuna on wonton crisps, pork belly and crispy wedge potato poutine and grilled corn with Mexican farmers cheese. Fishbones is one of the best restaurants to eat in Lewiston Maine. They have amazing seafood and their seafood chowder is probably the best in Central Maine. That's what all the folks I eat with their say because I don't actually eat seafood. Their lunch is incredible and affordable and a lovely addition to the area. They have really wonderful options of non-seafood dishes. The pineland Farms burger is incredible. Their service and and offerings on the bar menu are delightful! During late spring all through summer and early fall they have a great patio to enjoy dining outside. I highly recommend Fishbones. read more

Ever since I started working in the L/A area, a restaurant that kept popping up in conversations was Fishbones and people always had great things to say. While they did lose our reservation, they were able to sit us in a decent amount of time. I did however, feel a bit awkward waiting in the middle of the bar area where there are a few tables for people to eat at as well. There were six of us, and it just felt a bit cramped. When we did finally get to our table, our waitress seemed a bit all over the place. She didn't bring the bread basket until we asked, gave people the wrong drinks and was gone for a really long time in between taking our apps order and coming back to take our entree orders. She was very sweet though, and they also comped one of our apps for messing up our reservation which I thought was nice. The table shared the sprouts and the lobster rangoons which were both absolutely delicious. Others at my table shared the ahi tuna and enjoyed it a lot, that's just not something I eat. I ordered a "figgin delicious" for my drink and haven't stopped raving about it since. It was the best cocktail I've ever had! I ordered the fish tacos for my entree. They were fresh and very full of fish, but a little on the plain side. They desperately needed acid and salt. They come three to an order, which is a generous portion, but I'd rather have two and a side option. It doesn't really feel like a meal to me just to eat tacos, so I ordered some fries (which were more like wedges) and I'm so glad I did because they were awesome- Seasoned to perfection, crispy yet pillowy. Everyone else liked their meals quite a bit, except my boyfriend ordered the ahi tuna entree and found it was a bit bland and dry, as there was no sauce to really tie the dish together. All in all, it wasn't exactly the dining experience I had expected but that doesn't mean I won't maybe go back some time. What a great place! I just ate there on Monday with a group of over 30 people. You may notice that on their schedule Monday is not a typical day of operation. Well, the fine folks at Fish Bones actually opened the restaurant specifically for us. Obviously there was pre-planning involved but it was still very nice of them to open the restaurant on a day they aren't typically open. We started the night at 6:30 with hors d'oeuvores being passed out and a cheese/cracker platter siting on the bar. Their lobster rangoons are ridiculously good! At around 7:15 we all sat down to order from a set menu. Appetizers: Clam Chowder or Garden Salad Main course: Beef Wellington, Rosemary Chicken, Haddock stuffed with lobster, and a vegetarian dish Dessert: Strawberry and amaretto white cake or a chocolate dipped fudge cake I had the clam chowder, chicken, and strawberries on white cake. Everything was FANTASTIC! After eating all of those hors d'oeuvores (I'll be honest I must have put down at least 2 lbs of the rangoons) the portion sizes were perfect. The size of the chowder bowl was about one cup, the chicken was about a 1/4 pound piece on top of about half a cup of rice pilaf, and the cake was about a 4 inch square with 5 whole strawberries and a 1 oz shot of amaretto. Now, my wife thinks I have a tape worm with the amount of food that I eat so I'd have to say without the 2lbs of rangoon I probably would have left unsatisfied with the meal size. Now that the important stuff is out of the way...the atmosphere was a little small. Although the restaurant is pretty open with a high ceiling it is by no means a LARGE restaurant. I don't know how crowded it gets but I can imagine that it would get a bit crowded on the weekend so call ahead to make a reservation. The waitresses and bartenders were all fantastic and more than accommodating. It was a full bar and coming from the Boston area the drinks were CHEAP. I'm not in Lewiston very much but the next time I go to Freeport, ME I WILL drive the extra 30 min to get to Fish Bones. read more
