The fish and shrimp were surprisingly delicious. Reminded me of Long John Silvers back at home in Toledo, OH. Although I would say the batter could use just a little salt, it was fried perfectly. So far I would recommend the fish, shrimp (jumbo), scallops are good, but expensive. Instead of chips for a lighter side, I recommend the fried zucchini (I know right, lighter but fried lol) it's actually good though. This place is great! I was looking for a good Fish and chips place nearby and I found it! The staff are nice and the fish is battered fresh on every order. The place is somewhat small and drab looking but that doesn't matter, I always order take out. Malt vinegar and tartar sauce along with an ESB compliment these fish and chips nicely! This is the best fish and chips around. The cook is a great guy and very friendly. Food is cooked just right, lightly breaded and DOES NOT have a oily burning taste. I normally get a mix of fish and shrimp, both are perfectly cooked and moist inside. Simply put, the food is amazing. The sauces are all home made and taste great. My favorite is the cocktail sauce. To top it all off the coleslaw, has a sweet taste and is very light, recommended with every meal. This is a must go to place. If you love fish and chips, H salt fish & Chips will not let you down!! But, When I am jonesing for old fashioned fish and chips, no one does as good as this place. You will have a hard time finding a cleaner establishment to eat at in Los Angeles. Nothing like the Original recipe of this old H SALT. There is not a better more authentic place in all of Southern California. It's just as consistent as it was when I was a kid and they were all over the place. Now there are very few and most do their own thing. There was one of these same named restaurants where I grew up and never tried it so I guess I always wanted to. The fish wasn't bad but it wasn't very good either. I can't believe I have never posted a review for H&H. We have come here at least two dozen times, usually once every two-three months. Fish is good, shrimp is good, kid's meals are good, and everyone likes their coleslaw and fried zucchini. We don't come very often, though, because it's like treat/craving food. It's too greasy and everything is fried so you definitely can't eat here all that often. Anyway, every time we come it's sorta like a treat. We have never dined in-they have a small indoor area with tables. We always take it to go and everything is still crispy and fresh and perfectly grease-laden. owner is also nice and ALWAYS there frying up your fish himself. Never used to eat here but often seen the place passing through Downey. My boyfriend and I decided to give it a try considering we both LOVE fish and chips. I recently became pregnant and we never turned back,we literally come by once a week! We usually order a four piece and a three piece fish and chips and the price is fair, (just below $20). When we feel adventurous we order the fried mushrooms which is equally as delicious . The gentlemen that works there (we thought he was the only one that worked there for the longest time) is friendly and pretty cool. Always on it and makes sure our experience is awesome everytime. So I was driving by and saw this place and figured it's lunch time. Needless to say, I was very pleased with my lunch choice. The fish was fried to order, about 5/8 minutes wait time. The fish in it self was flaky and tasty. But I think for fish and chips, the batter is the deal breaker. The batter was very light and crispy, it didn't over power the fish and was a great compliment to the fish. A nice thing was I didn't taste the fry oil. Sure there was a bit of oil, evidence on the plate, but I didnt taste it, which was nice. The portions were great. No little strips of fish here. More like a full filet of white fish. The chips ie fries, was nice and freshly made but I have to say tasted like the typical run of the mill fry. A nice thing was they were nice and thick. The service was incredible. When I went to order a soda, the owner said that their soda machine's soda wasn't up to par. I've been to places where the machines were beyond repair and still they sold their sodas! We wanted fish and chips for lunch and have not been to an h salt in many years. The restaurant was very clean. We orderd the 3 pc fish and a 2/4pc fish and shrimp and purchased a side of slaw. The fish was OK. The shrimp was very small but bigger than popcorn shrimp. The tarter sauce was more mayonnaise and lacked flavor. The biggest disappointments were the fries and coleslaw. The fries were greasy and limp. They could have cooked longer or hotter The coleslaw was mushy like it was made days ago. Looking at all the slaw containers they had in the fridge behind the counter and beleve that was the case. I might have excused this for a late dinner but this was lunch so i know it definitely could not have been made today. We ate the fish and shrimp but threw out the fries and coleslaw after taisting it. We are left with a greasy film in our mouth after eating it 1/2 hour ago.
