First Watch in Layton, UT This is the best healthy breakfast place in Layton! It's been long overdue to have a healthy breakfast spot in this area. We've tried First Watch in Florida years ago and loved the food so I was elated to see they built one in Layton. I got the Morning Meditation drink, it's tasty with all the ginger, tumeric, beet, orange all in it! I got the rustica frittata and liked the feta cheese in it. My husband got one for he onlettwes and my parents shared the Floridian French toast. We saw the million dollar bacon and had to snag that too. Overall, the service was great! Our server was attentive and checked in with us the exact right amount. This place is clean and rarely has a weight even though the parking lot is always busy. read more

Grabbed brunch for my sister's birthday recently. I've been excited to try First Watch. Our experience was less than great. We were able to get a table quickly, especially for a weekend. This made me feel like we had high hopes for a great dining experience. The menu was large! So many delicious sounding items it was hard to pick a meal. It took 15 minutes just to be acknowledged by the waitress. Our waitress did say that they were short staffed. It took over 30 minutes for us to place our order, which honestly could have been done after waiting for the first 15 minutes before being greeted. I ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes. I was debating between that & the Banana bread summer menu French toast. I heard the table behind us order that & then they received a dish with no bananas because the restaurant ran out of bananas. So I'm glad I didn't order this dish! I ordered the honey crunch iced coffee. Calories are outrageous for this but once I received it, I realized why. SO MUCH CARAMEL! Which is great! It's what you pay for! But the thing you don't get is the actual coffee in my iced coffee. Literally tasted more like a milkshake than an iced coffee. Thankfully my boyfriend ordered coffee. I ended up drinking some of this down & refilling it with the coffee from the table. For my main dish, I ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes & they were really good. Portion was large. Two of my friends ordered the scrambled hashes. They said they were okay. My boyfriend ordered the traditional breakfast with added sausage & an added pancake on the side. When our bill came, we were blown away at how much a side pancake cost! $9!!!! This is insane for 1 pancake! The traditional breakfast was $14 & the side pancake alone was almost worth the whole traditional plate! I cannot believe this place is charging so much for one pancake! Fun new breakfast place in Layton. Only open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, closes at 2:30pm. Where the old Denny's was by Layton Hills Mall. Big menu with a lot of interesting options. We are going to have to come back to dive deeper into the menu. We tried the Million Dollar Bacon, around $6.50. Four strips of bacon with a sweet drizzle and herbs, nicely cooked really good flavor, not as thick as other million dollar bacon we've had, but still very good. 4/5 Chicachanga, breakfast burrito, really good flavor, with just a little kick. Would totally order again. 5/5 My wife ordered the biscuit and gravy, thought they were really good. 4/5 Both came with their potatoes I upgraded mine to the million dollar potatoes which adds bacon, herbs and a sauce. It was good but probably go with just the regular next time. 4/5 Food came out hot and fast, service was good. You pay using a QR code on your phone. Worked really well. We actually really like First Watch but today the waitress we had was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. I'm not the type of person that really complains. I'm pretty understanding. But Gemma was a nightmare. We walked in and it was so busy. We asked the girls at the front if we can self seat in the bar (it was my fiancé and I so we were looking to get in and out quickly) the girls said yes and we headed that way. We walked up and there were dirty dishes on the counter in front of the two empty seats. I decided to clean the area and clear the dirty plates, utensils, napkins and cups. We stood there for a few minutes until I decided to go to the restroom and get a wet paper towel to wipe the counter down. While I was gone Gemma doesn't greet my fiancé, no. She decides to make a snarky comment about him bringing coffee in to drink. Here's the thing. If first watch made lattes or coffee drinks other than drip coffee we would be happy to drink their coffee but they don't. So it should be perfectly acceptable for us to bring in a coffee drink that we actually want to drink. If Gemma is itching that bad to make a comment, try a joke. Something light. Don't come in hot. K so we are waiting to order and Gemma decides to help the people next to us (who got there first so obviously that's completely normal and fair) what wasn't completely normal and fair is sitting and watching Gemma talk with, be nice to and chit chat with the couple and then when she finally decides to come and take our order, it's a completely different experience. She didn't even greet us or say hello. She just asked us what we wanted very dryly, no smile, nothing. We ordered our food. She grabbed the menus with a straight look on her face (almost as if she's annoyed at our existence) and then turned and walked away. Like what the actual heck! I had to clear off my own area touching other people's dirty dishes, which I do not get paid to do, wipe down the counter which had thick sticky stuff all over it and egg juice everywhere. Then you're gonna be super nice to the people next to us and super rude to us for no reason at all other than maybe because we brought our own coffee in?! There really is no reason. It took a long time for our food to arrive and when it finally did, Gemma had put it into a different table, so the food runner was looking for us all over trying to get our food to us...coincidence? Perhaps. Or maybe she did it on purpose. Only Gemma knows. At this point there's no way coffee has triggered her this hard. It's gotta be something else... We noticed that Gemma never gave us utensils to eat with, so I then had to walk around and try to find someone to help. All of the utensils holders at the bar were empty. I saw Gemma, started to walk up to her and she tried to hurry away into the kitchen so I said "excuse me!!" And I told her we didn't have utensils and I asked if she could help us get some. She gave me the dirtiest look! Very SARCASTIC and like reached for the only two utensils that were in a bucket on the bar in front of an elderly lady who was eating. As if Gemma not only expected me to know where the utensils were, but also expected me to reach in front of this lady to grab them. It kind of feels like she should have given them to us like every other waitress and waiter does at every other restaurant that exists. I mean, the system works. Customers actually like if you treat them well and give them utensils to eat with. Then when she printed our receipt (never offered us a box but offered to everyone else around us) I asked her if her name was on the receipt and she literally yells at me "do you want a manager?" I replied "I'm sorry?" And then she quickly changed her volume and said it again in a normal speaking voice. I said no thank you and we left. The reason I didn't speak to a manager is because the absurdity of how Gemma treated us would have stopped at the managers ears but her service was SO TERRIBLE. Everyone should know. We did absolutely NOTHING to warrant such poor treatment. Gemma needs more training on customer service and treating ALL customers with respect and dignity despite whatever her insecurities or personal opinions are. We have 8 kids and I would be really disappointed if any of our children ever treated people so poorly for no good reason. read more

After seven visits, I feel like I've given First Watch a fair shot, and there's a lot to like. The food is a step above your typical breakfast spot, the atmosphere is bright and inviting, and the staff is consistently friendly. It wants to be a great go-to brunch place. But what's holding it back is a pattern of "good enough" execution, some gaps in table awareness, and either front to back with house, communication, or staff education. A few examples: - I've ordered eggs "well done with fully set whites," five times Three times the whites came out runny. - One visit, a large amount of water was spilled on our table when drinks were delivered. It sat there soaking menus and making it awkward to even rest your arms until I finally grabbed paper towels from the restroom and handled it myself. - Another time, a drink was served with liquid running down the side of the glass and then spilled a little more when placed on the table, leaving the table sticky. Same outcome, same self-service cleanup. None of these are huge issues individually, but together, they start to feel like a training and attentiveness gap. On the menu side, some of the bowls (especially quinoa or potato-based ones) feel a little unbalanced--heavy on the base, light on the toppings--so you end up wishing for more substance beyond the filler. Even small details, like the overly aggressive spray nozzles in the restroom sinks, make basic things like washing your hands more frustrating than they should be. Bottom line: First Watch has all the ingredients to be excellent, but right now it's settling for "pretty good." Tighten up execution, table care, and change base to mix-in ratios, and this could easily move into top-tier brunch territory. read more

We had brunch here yesterday and it was delicious! The restaurant is bright and spacious, can't believe it used to be a Dennys! Our server was amazing and did such a great job. We had some million dollar bacon to share, it was drizzled with maple syrup and was a little spicy too. I had the Floridian French Toast, which is challah bread with a ton of bananas and berries all over it. It was served with a berry jam or coulis, and also warm maple syrup. It was so much food and so good! My husband had the Chickichanga, which is like a breakfast burrito with chicken, chorizo, green chiles, cheese, onion and avocado in a tortilla. It's covered in a spicy hollandaise sauce and drizzled with sour cream. He loved it! I also had a Purple Haze juice, it is basically a lemonade with butterfly pea flower tea and lavender syrup. I met up with a friend and we hadn't seen each other for a long time, we wanted to try a new restaurant and our initial server was great: but as we were finishing our food and drank our coffee talking we had someone else taking over that section check on us multiple times to see if we needed anything. We politely declined as we were enjoying our meal and conversation, I felt as if they were trying to get us to hurry up and completely finish our meal and drink in a rush. I finally asked if she was asking us to leave, she said YES! she continued to say she only had a few tables and makes $2.00 an Hour and has kids. I was shocked!! I asked for my sour cream to be placed on the side, which I never received any sour cream.. I was also never asked what kind of toast I wanted ex wheat, whites. Sourdough. The restaurant itself was cold. It's 33*degrees Outside F I had no way to measure the temperature inside, but a lot of customers were wearing jackets and coats through the entire meal. I asked my wife how her food was and she says pretty mediocre. I felt the same way.. her food was served cold. My omelet was served cold. Neither one of us asked for cold dishes. She orderd egg Benedict. With potatoes I had an omelette. I also love Green Tabasco on my breakfast food, this was unavailable in this restaurant. I cannot speak highly enough of First Watch. This place has never disappointed. Great food and service here. If you have any sort of food allergy, they take it very seriously. Everything tastes freshly prepared and lots of choices to choose from to meet everyone's cravings and needs. Coffee is good too. Service is amazing here as well. Went to First Watch in Layton for breakfast today. It was very busy but the wait was less than 15 minutes. Parking can be a little challenging but we got a spot pretty quickly. We ordered a blueberry cornbread with lemon butter off the seasonal menu, and it was very good. I'm impressed at how well the combination went together. With that said, the cornbread could have been a little hotter. The main entrees were a steak hash also off the seasonal menu and an original breakfast. I have to say the steak cash was really good. Had a chimichurri on it and another sauce that went very well with a decent amount of meat and more than enough potatoes and other ingredients. The original breakfast was scrambled eggs with some cheese on it, potatoes and bacon. Again everything was very good. They have a line of fresh juices available none of which we tried but they do serve Coke products. All in all, while I'm not really big on chain restaurants, I would definitely go back here multiple times to try different things off the menu. read more

The food was really good in a general sense, other than my sandwich (ham Gruyère cheese) was really dry. Loved the tomato basil soup. I got the lemon blueberry cornbread to go and I heard many people say it was so good. I can't wait to try it. My friend enjoyed her meal. And the special drinks they make were phenomenal! I got the green kale one and fell in love with it. The service was a little slow. The only thing that kind of put a bad taste in my mouth was that they charged me 50 cents for a to go box. I can't eat that much because if I do, my medicine makes my stomach hurt really bad, so I always get a to go box and take half or more than half home with me. The food is already kind of expensive, and no you're charging me for something that other restaurants provide if needed when you're finished eating complementary. Man I love this place. We don't have one in California, at least not LA or surrounding cities so whenever I'm in a different city I check to see if they have one. I knew I would come here at some point, the question was when because it was always a 30 minute drive from my hotel or the hotel the team was staying at. I also tried to give the local restaurants a try but epic fail. Anyway, the food was excellent. I had the multigrain pancake which tastes like a regular pancake for those that are wondering why anyone would waste time with a multigrain pancake. The fruit was delicious and I had pineapples, strawberries and blueberries. The hot water was piping hot and I was able to get my tea. They didn't have almond milk but that's ok because they had oat milk that I used in my tea. Million dollar bacon always tastes great and this location didn't fail. I was by myself so I sat at the bar. They were super packed on a Sunday morning, but I was served quick and the food came out timely. Hard to believe they have converted a Denny's into such a great venue. Pre-opening are where they work out the gaps and give the team a chance to become acclimated to the menu, the kitchen and the surrounding. You would never have known this was day one. I arrived to pick it up, but they gave my order to someone else before I got there. Not a huge deal...mistakes happen. I waited for my food to be made again. It came out 15-20 minutes later with only one of two kid's meals. Glad I checked... They made the second one, but only gave me one drink. I also ordered two extra eggs for my Power Bowl. This review is purely based off service, not the food. First Watch looks great when you walk in, but that's where it ended for us. We found out the hard way, if you want to eat here, you must join the online waitlist AT LEAST 2 HOURS prior to arriving. We didn't know this and chose to walk in and get in line. The man who put us in the waitlist did not let us know that the wait would be almost 2 hours! We waited for 20 minutes (the lobby didn't seem that busy) and then asked how much longer the wait would be. After being told it would be at least another 90 minutes, we decided to leave. read more

I was excited to try a new breakfast spot in Layton after hearing all the hype surrounding First Watch. I ordered eggs benedict, which is a favorite, and unfortunately did not live up to the hype. The poached egg fell apart into a runny mess--egg white and all-- as soon as I tried to take a bite. When the waitress finally came by to give us our check, I let her know my eggs were undercooked. Instead of offering to take it back and bring me an edible egg that I could chew, not slurp, she argued with me telling me that's the way they were supposed to be. Look, I'm all for a runny yolk, but when the egg white is dripping through the tines of my fork I know it's not done properly. After some back and forth she finally took it back and made it right. Not sure what that was on the toast. The pancake was one of worst I have ever had and I've eaten them for 65 years. The pancake looked great and was as big as the plate but the bottom was burned and the pancake soggy from oil or fake butter. It seems there was a "pond" of oil on the flat top then the batter poured into it. I tried to eat it hoping it would get better. Then the bill came. HOLY S&]$!! $8.79 for that rancid pancake. We were excited to try a new breakfast spot! This place was not bad, but I will explain the 3 stars. I would honestly give 2.5 stars if that was an option. 2 seems too mean since I think they'll continue to improve as they become more established. I'll start with the positives! The location is nice, we easily found a parking spot. We downloaded the app so we were able to join the list and check in online. The renovations turned out great; it appears to have a similar layout to the old Dennys but everything feels brighter, more clean, and more modern. Our server was polite and friendly. The negatives- and I hate being negative I just think maybe this feedback could be constructive. They chose cloth seating and it already is a little dirty. I think the cloth seats might prove to be a cleanliness issue as time goes on. There also seemed to be a quality control issue with the food. I ordered a kids chocolate chip pancake, but received a blueberry pancake (with a few random chocolate chips thrown in). My toddler was hungry and I didn't want to send it back so we just rolled with it. The pancake was huge, but it was a little undercooked in the middle. It was just okay, in my opinion. My husband and I both got omelets. Mine was fine, but his was cold. It's almost like they made the eggs first, then added the toppings after and folded it over. I was also underwhelmed with the amount of avocado that came on my "bacado" omelet. Both of our omelets came with "greens" but it was just plain, raw spring mix. No dressing- just like a hand full of greens. Maybe it's a Cali thing, I'm not sure. I thought it was kind of weird. The menu said "lemon dressed greens" but it definitely did not have anything on it. We both got toast. I asked if I could get a pancake instead of toast with an upcharge but my server wasn't sure- she said no, then said yes- then said she asked the kitchen and they said no because they're too big. If I wanted a pancake I would have to pay the $7/8 for a giant entrée pancake, so I declined. It would be nice if they just had a medium pancake as a side to add like other places. No big deal, I got sourdough toast instead. They gave me 4 slices of toast, but my husband only got 2 slices. We got different kinds of bread though- maybe you only get 2 if you choose wheat? They were the same size toast slices, so it seemed inconsistent. My bread was absolutely coated in butter. I think it would be nice if they just gave you bread with butter on the side so you can put how much you like. The jam was pretty good though! That did come on the side. Our total with the tip was around $55. It was comparable to the pricing of other breakfast places we've visited. I'm not going to count them out yet. We will give it another try. As of now though, they aren't a top breakfast place for us quite yet. Like I said before, I think they just need to figure things out a bit. They're still training everyone so I think there are lots of mistakes happening still. Hopefully they work out the kinks and continue to improve! read more
