They were well stocked with many pies at 2pm which should have tipped me off that demand was slow. I selected the Michigan Sour Cherry Pie which at $26 was the most expensive pie I have ever bought. I'd say First Slice is right up there with Hoosier Mama in tastiness, but HM gets the edge, and it's because it comes down to the crust! The crusts at FS taste more ordinary, less crusty, and less hearty. Regardless, I was impressed with the quality and flavor of the pie here. I've had FS bookmarked for almost 2 years. What took me so long to get here?? French silk was delectable. When asked what the difference is between French silk and chocolate cream was, the gentleman behind the counter said French silk was more of a dark chocolate mousse with a pastry crust, and chocolate cream is milk chocolate over a chocolate crust. The whipped cream topping is heaven: slightly sweet, light, and fluffy! I left after 2 hours of quality friend catch-up time and with a slice of the key lime pie to go. Maybe more of a 2.5. However, I'd rather round up since it seems like this place has many that just are head over heals about it. Maybe it's just me and I'm missing something? True, as others have said it's a cute little shop, so why was the staff so grumpy. Just a bad vibe upon walking in and during the transaction. Not much to choose from, I did decide on a slice of the chocolate cream pie in order to compare with another place that has set the bar really high, I wasn't expecting it to be as good. However, I wasn't expecting it to taste like one of those boxed no bake pies. I also picked up some frozen Mac & Cheese, can't comment on that yet as it's still in my freezer. Thought I'd start this review with an overused cliche for all you folks out there in cyberland. It really is a cute cafe though with many selections for pastries. Being a pie shop and all, I had a funny feeling pie was what they did best. So I took a risk and got just that. I had a slice of the Peanut Butter Chocolate pie. It was reasonably priced and looked a bit different than how I would normally imagine a pie of such a name. The crust was chocolate with an overloaded completely peanut buttery filling with a thin layer of chocolate on the top and what seemed to be crushed peanuts on top of that. It was rich and decadent...and I love peanut butter & chocolate to no end...but it was just too much peanut butter & not enough chocolate. It was good but to put it plainly I've had better. I tried my friend's after she had a bit and wanted no more. I agreed with her that it wasn't impressive. Meh. With so many pie shops in the city that blow my mind, I don't see much reason in coming back here outside of the convenience factor. read more

This is my absolute favorite pie shop in all of Chicagoland! We got their pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, and I ate about half of it all by myself. The crust was perfectly done with a chewy texture but also incredibly soft and flaky. The pumpkin filling was so smooth and tasted incredible, it went down a little too easily. We also tried some of their individual sliced flavors and found them to be equally as good. The french silk pie melted in your mouth and tasted great. The cherry pie had a perfect crust on top with a sweet and sour cherry filling that tasted incredibly fresh. The chocolate peanut butter was extremely dense with an overwhelming amount of peanut butter so if you are a peanut butter lover you will like that pie a lot. They had a bunch of other flavors I cannot wait to come back and try! read more

Not only the best pie shop in Chicagoland by far, but also one of the cutest neighborhood sandwich shops that either my wife or myself have been in. It is as cute as a button and it turns out that pie and coffee is better than that sad old American standard "wakey wakey eggs and bakey". Their pie crusts are flakey and their sandwich bread are moist, soft and delicious. They've been here since 2011 so they aren't going anywhere but the experience of supporting a local business is very rewarding, plus the food is unequalled. read more

This place is totally adorable! I came here to have some coffee, a piece of pie, and quietly read a book and I could not have picked a better place. The staff is super friendly. It wasn't too crowded when I was there but I assume when it's more bustling that they are just as a attentive and bubbly. There are also little pieces of paper with the WiFi information next to the tables so you can tell that they care about their consumers experience and ease. The establishment is totally cute. It's actually a bit bigger than it looks. If you're looking to come have a slice and sit down there's a decent amount of seating and you'll probably be able to grab a spot. Most importantly, the pie is delicious. I got a slice of the chocolate peanut butter and it was awesome. Also, $4 really isn't bad at all. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

The blueberry pie is really good! Not overly sweet, and with blueberry jam and mouse. It looks a bit like a taro cake to me for some reason. The crème brulee pie is also very good The tea here is really good. They put the tea leaves (the whole ones, not those cheap grounded ones) into a pouch, and steam it. This is a cute little cafe and pie shop right off of the Main Street in Andersonville. They sell slices of pies for $4 and whole pies ranging from $22-25. This places closes at 10PM (and they don't run out of pies!) so it's a perfect place to get your dessert fix after dinner. There were so many different flavors I wanted to try but ultimately we settled on coffee toffee and blueberry and peach streusel. The coffee toffee was amazing, and the peach streusel was good, but not my fave. The fruit inside was on the dry side, and not sweet and saucy like you'd expect. We had twenty minutes to spare while waiting for a seat at a local restaurant. I'd heard of First Slice Pie Cafe and knew it was a spot that I wanted to check out. After a quick walk, we found this adorable cafe on a corner. It's easy to spot, but I'll tell you now - even if it weren't, I would be coming back again and again. There are so many options here. We wanted a few things to bring home. With my son in mind, I snagged a blueberry hand pie. It looked a little boring - no glaze or anything. But I guess when you use a flavorful, flaky pie crust loaded with fabulous blueberries...you don't need no stinking' glaze. He allowed me a tiny nibble of the corner, so I can personally confirm the amazingness of that crust. The mocha pecan blondie was nothing to sneeze at either. The instant coffee provides that mocha flavor and the loads of chocolate and white chocolate chips make this a fun, out of the ordinary treat. We tried a couch potato cookie. This was chocolately and a little salty. It was a fantastic combination in a cookie! Finally, the pie. We had a mini chocolate peanut butter pie. JUST DO IT. Seriously. It was a bit rich, but every bite was creamy and just wonderful. The crust was Oreo-licious. We would definitely eat this again Regrets. I try to live my life without regrets, but I do regret skipping right past that molasses cookie. I tried the sample AFTER we completed our purchase on the way out the door and it was sooooo good! Not a cookie, I would have ever considered before. Big mistake. Huge. Try to learn from my mistakes and try the molasses cookie. Really just try it all. This was such a cute little pie shop in Andersonville! My boyfriend and I had stumbled upon this quite serendipitously so we naturally stepped in and ordered two different pies: key lime and apple. The pies were very fresh, tasteful, and affordable! I usually expect to pay at least $5/slice but at First Slice they were $4/slice. I remember the pies tasting very homemade and the overall aesthetic of the cafe was very homey. It's definitely a valuable space for Andersonville and brings character to the neighborhood. Unfortunately, first slice is quite far for me so I don't think I'd go out of my way to travel all the way here but if I were in the area, I would most definitely come again. I think our mistake is that we went for the traditional apple pie. It was okay, but not great--particularly for the cost. Came here on a recommendation from Timeout raving about the chocolate peanut butter pie. Took my time perusing the choices because they all looked and sounded wonderful. Picked up a slice of blueberry cheesecake as well, because I am a sucker for both of those things separately, so why wouldn't I choose them together? The chocolate peanut butter was smooth and creamy. A bit more chocolate in the actual pie as opposed to in just the crust would have been nice but no real complaints. The blueberry cheesecake was just as enjoyable but not as outstanding as I hoped it would have been. Again, nothing really to hate on here, just a solid entry all around when it comes to a fruit-based cheesecake. I'd definitely be willing to give their other selections a go provided I was in the neighborhood. And their non-dessert choices looked pretty tasty as well. And the staff was pleasant and knowledgeable, so I'd give everything here 3 and 1/2 stars all things considered. read more
