I've been a customer of First Alarm (also Sentry Alarm) for over thirty years. I've had no complaint during that time. I got cameras for my home around 10 years ago from First Alarm. Lately I have been switching my internet provider which necessitates a technician changing the cameras to operate under the new internet. Their workers blocked an area for loading trucks with their van while they were milling around on their phones. When asked to move their van, one of the workers repeatedly pretended to be unable to hear me to get in my face, and then angrily demanded to know if I worked there, if I was the property manager, if I owned the land, if it was my own company in rapid succession- schoolyard bully stuff. I asked him to move his van again, after which he called me a racial slur and made a vague threat before hiding in his van, and did not leave until I pulled out a phone and started taking pictures. Just the kind of person you'd want to install your security system! Too bad for him that he didn't have the sense to take off his company jacket before being worthless and belligerent while trespassing. Like being nickled and dimed for every little thing? Like companies that have extremely outdated technology? And do you like companies that will threaten you with collections before you even get the first bill? Then First Alarm is the company for you! I'd been a customer for over 8 yrs and they were great until about 3 years ago, and went downhill fast. They charged a ton of money to change one batter in one sensor (told me I couldn't do that myself, found out that was a lie). A short while ago, they told me I had to do a 5G upgrade on my system. Why do I need that AND a land line? Why do I need both? No one could explain that, but said I could sign ANOTHER 2 yr contract and pay only $99 for the upgrade, or pay $250 with no contract. So I went out and bought a whole new system that I can take with me if I move, installed myself very easily and quickly, and monthly cost is less than half than First Alarm. And they can send you communication specific to you and your location. First Alarm doesn't seem to know that Microsoft Word can do that! I'd run far and fast away from this company. read more

We used first alarm for over 5 years. And the service, itself was fine. After our initial contract ended, we went month to month for several years. Then in 2021, they said they needed to come 'upgrade our installation' to a more modern cell service. It was billed as necessary to continue having a serviceable alarm. We agreed and let the technician upgrade the equipment. What we didn't realize (nor were we told) was that rather than just being a service appointment and agreement to let them upgrade the on-site equipment they owned, we were also signing an additional 5-year contract agreement that would charge us thousands of dollars if/when we moved before 2026. We did move, and they billed us through 2026 and pointed to the fine print in that contract. That's a shady business practice. I don't think it's the individual technicians' fault, They are quite nice. It's clearly how the business is squeezing out revenue. We're disappointed. And we recommend avoiding them. Edit - response to your note: we certainly were NOT given an option to pay for the upgrade. We would have done so. And if you read the other reviews here, not one other customer was given 5 YEARS of contract commitment in exchange for allowing you to install an upgrade to your equipment. read more

After being a customer for 15 years, I canceled my service. Ïnitially, I spent several thousand dollars having the system installed by Sentry Alert / First Alarm. They recently told me that I needed to upgrade elements of my panel to be compatible with changing cellular standards. I was surprised how expensive their proposal was and that it came with a 3-year contract! I do not like being nickeled and dimed, and I am suspicious of organizations that employ lock-in contracts, especially after being a customer for so many years. Good companies rely on good policies, pricing, and service, not lock-in contracts. Based on this, I canceled my service. What earned the one-star review is that they have a sneaky clause in the contract that they own your panel (even though I paid thousands for it) and require a payment of $99 to avoid having to return it (and all the programming I paid for). This contract clause is a sneaky and unethical way to keep you paying high monthly fees. I switched to Alarmgrid which is more affordable and has a wide selection of products. They will do most work remotely for FREE - no more nickel and diming, no lock-in, month-month contract. Shame on First Alarm. If you've been loyal to them for years, no matter, they will still try to hit you with costly upgrades. Moving house and need to cancel your contract? Watch out, they'll charge you for that too - several hundred dollars (no allowance made for depreciation of equipment). In the midst of selling our home we had to make arrangements for them to remove equipment or pay them $600. Our realtor had never seen anything like it. Why they wouldn't want to work something out to the benefit of all, including new home buyers is beyond me. Oh wait, they operate on a nickle and dime basis, that's how. Think you've cancelled your contract with them? Wait they're still trying to nickle and dime you. No doubt they will push back on this review and be argumentative as they seem to be with every single negative thing on here rather than take the approach of 'how can we do better and improve our customer service'. This used to be a great company called Sentry Alert, they have since been sold to First Alarm. First Alarm has treated me terribly, refused to fix dangerous problems, and charged me for their mistakes. Strike 1- I was sitting at home when my bedroom window alarm went into trouble mode. I could clearly see that nothing bad happened so I reset the alarm and called the company. They told me that if the system took a reset, then not to worry about it. Next day I'm at work and they call me and tell me my bedroom window alarm has gone off and the police have been called. I go home and see that nothing is wrong. I call First Alarm and they send a tech out to check the alarm and he tells me that nothing is wrong with the system and he charges me 150 bucks! So in summary: their system calls the police for no reason and then they charge me for a tech to say there is nothing wrong with the system and nothing can be done. I happen to be a police officer myself, so I know that there is nothing worse for the security of my house than the local police thinking that my house has constant false alarms. Strike 2: the hardware now beeps at a super low volume to let my family know that the alarm has been set and they need to deactivate it. When I contacted the company, they said nothing can be done and I just need to live with it. Strike 3: they just have a bad attitude and do not demonstrate interest in fixing the problem or making sure my house is secure. Again: their system is calling the police for no reason, their tech is saying there is nothing wrong with the system and they are charging me extra for their faulty system or incompetent tech. I will be going to a different security company and just take the loss on the $1500 in installed hardware. This company is making me less safe. Three thumbs down! read more

Flat out thieves. Don't try moving or selling your house, etc. while you're under their three year required adhesion contract because you will be required to immediately pay for any time left on the contract even though they've removed the equipment from your house and canceled your account, i.e., are providing ZERO service. System never worked right either as the motion detector feature would set off the alarm when nobody was home so often I could only set it using the "home" option and disabling the motion detector. We had to subscribe with First Alarm because it was written into our lease. Previous tenants had their equipment in place already, owners insisted we use the same company. When we moved in, we arranged to install more contacts at a few points that previously didn't have any, but it took the first tech so long to figure out how to connect/activate the system that we asked him to leave and requested someone else. We specified please send someone else, they said no problem, and then we got the same guy the second time. The third trip out finally got the system to work. I'm assuming the system was working for the time we lived there. I called to cancel in Jan of this year because we were moving. I asked to pay over the phone to get it over with and was told my account balance was zero, but I need to sign an official cancellation form and if any equipment was leased from them, a technician would need to be scheduled to come out to remove it, and if it's not removed then they would send me a bill for the equipment that I'm keeping. Long story short, the technician I spoke with insisted that some thingiemabob at our rental belonged to First Alarm and we would be charged if we don't return it. I was totally confused by this. The whole reason why we went with them was because the equipment was already there when we moved in! Took my husband several calls to sort this out. Great, we're in the clear and moved out! Please read your contracts carefully to note the part about leased equipment!! Now in May, at my new place, I get a forwarded bill from them for December 2019. I don't dispute the bill itself (I checked my account and I didn't pay in December), but it's frustrating that it's showing up so late and with a late charge! I called and paid it today and the lady waived the late charge. Yeay..? I wouldn't use them again. read more

We've been with First Alarm (formerly Sentry Alert) for 23 years, and we've had nothing but good experiences with them. The customer service, monitoring, and quality of the equipment have been spectacular. They're always helpful and never seem rushed, and they're great about following our instructions when we're going out of town. In August, we left our active grandcat home (with a visiting cat sitter) while we went to Mendocino. The next morning I received a call that our motion detector had gone off, and I was sure it was the cat. The operator called off the police and said that she'd call the service department to help me avoid another false alarm. A couple of minutes later, a technician named Red called and spent at least 10 minutes working with me to explain our options and bypass the motion detector. We recently decided to switch to digital monitoring. I worked with Myron from the sales office to plan and order updated equipment. He was extremely responsive and fair during the planning process. I never considered going to another company, and I hope to be with First Alarm for at least another 23 years! read more

Fraud alert. This company behaves no better than the thieves that you would hire an alarm company to keep out of your house and your pocket book. Thievery and dishonesty at its most egregious. Not just a matter of a miscommunication, but rather out and out intentional fraud! Ok, that's the opinion, now the facts. I contacted First Alarm in late October 2020 to have their alarm service discontinued because there is now more current surveillance technology like Ring that directly connects to your person via cellular connection with no monthly service fees attached. As well, you don't have to deal with dishonest clowns and bean counters like those you will find at First Alarm. But more about that later. I requested a 10/30/2020 termination date. I spoke with account representative Steve Goldy who notified me that the termination date did not allow for 30 day notice of termination, so I would be charged 48.08 (one month service fee) subsequent to termination. I told Steve that I didn't feel comfortable paying for service not received, so would delay termination by 30 days. In fact I sent Steve a new service cancellation form with an 11/30/2020 cancellation date in order to avoid this 30 day cancellation fee. His response was to waive the 30 day notice fee and sent me an email and contract stating such, with the original termination date of 10/30/2020. Ok, he is the account and company representative for First Alarm, so I guess he can do that. I agreed with the original termination date with the waived 48.08 fee. Contrary to the service termination agreement on 12/23/2020 I received a bill for the 48.08 30 day notice fee, which was to have been waived. I sent a copy of the bill to Steve Goldy on that date asking for his explanation. Steve never responded. On 12/31/2020 I received a follow up bill from First Alarm for the 48.08 30 day notice fee plus late fees. I then sent that to Steve requesting explanation. Steve finally responded to my inquiries on 1/6/2020 with an email sent to Jenny Wachter in accounts stating that the charge was to be waived per his agreement with me and to please cancel the billing. On 1/12/2020 Steve left a voice message on my phone stating that the late bill was outstanding despite his affirmations written and verbal as well as service cancellation contract with me stating that the fee was waived. I called Steve and wrote him an email stating that this behavior was fraudulent and contrary to contract law. As a representative of a company when you contract with a client with terms agreed upon in writing you don't get "do overs". Only charlatans, thieves and clowns would disagree with that. Be warned this is a creepy organization. Why would anyone hire a security firm whose moral character and sense of right and wrong is no better than a common thief. read more

Our system was installed in 2003 during a "down to the studs" complete renovation. It required 27 zones using door and window contacts, motion detectors and hard wired smoke detectors. In 17 years we've never had an equipment issue, until our low voltage transformer (a $15 item with an expected life of under ten years) finally gave up at 17 years. First Alarm's dispatcher notified us immediately of the problem. I requested that the on-call weekend service tech contact me prior to scheduling a service call. He promptly called and by following his clear instructions (I have some basic familiarity with electronics) we identified the problem. Rather than book an expensive weekend service call I decided to wait till Monday. We were home anyway..."sheltering in place". By late afternoon the transformer had yet to arrive. A call to the service division put me in touch with the supervisor. Apparently all the techs had left for the day. Instead of us having to wait another day he volunteered to drop the transformer off on his way home! read more

I was with Sentry Alarm for 25+ years and when I cancelled, due to system being old, not functioning (even though I continued to pay for monthly monitoring) and refusing to purchase an updated system from First Alarm is when they began the bullying and harassment. They stated since I wasn't going with their upgraded, more expensive service they wanted to enter my home, when COVID was rampant, to remove 25+ year old equipment then when I informed them I wasn't letting anyone in my home and ill myself, they said I owed them a return equipment fee. COVID, was rampant, lives were being lost and all they were concerned about was 25 year old equipment???? First, I don't even have an agreement with First Alarm. Secondly, the agreement with Sentry Alert says NOTHING about a return equipment fee. They think they can come up with a fee and pass it on to the consumer. Each month they continued to send me an invoice and each time I returned the invoice requesting documentation to substantiate their claim of owing them anything. No response they just continued sending monthly statements. After sending repeated requests, for almost a year, for documentation, they respond by, threatening to send me to collection. I had my Bay Alarm home security system replaced by First Alarm a few years ago. I canceled Bay Alarm because of the frequency of sensor faults. It turned out that First Alarm's system was much more trouble than the Bay Alarm system it replaced. The many sensor faults led me to call for service countless times. They were backed up on service, so their response was to turn off sensors while I waited weeks for service. Roller coaster experience with this company. Contacted them due to excellent ratings on Yelp. Got an appointment the next day with a salesman. He was 2 hours late but did call a couple of times to explain the delay. Super nice guy and slightly better pricing than my old company. Problem is he was a nice guy with poor follow through which is kind of strange given the reputation of the alarm co. world as being super aggressive. Don't know which way I would rather have it but working with Sentry definitely was a frustrating experience to the point that after giving him the benefit-of-the-doubt, the pattern of inaction left me unsurprised. Not exactly what one would hope for in an alarm company. During a lull waiting to get information back from them, I did finally decide to go with a different company which I could easily rave about. Still, after finally getting the info on a separate video system we had been concurrently talking about, I did still want to get that part with Sentry. I set up an appointment only to have him no show/no call. When I called him over an hour later, he said since I was no longer getting the alarm system with them, they would not do the video system. You know, that would be fine. I understand that. What I don't understand is the lack of courtesy to call and cancel. Not good for a security company where communication and customer service should be a priority. This company is not one I would want to take a ride with. read more

Sentry Alert is a must-have for ALL Bay Area families. When you call, you get a live person immediately! With Bay Alarm, you have to "press 2 if you are having an alarm". I like speaking with a live, courteous, knowledgeable person. We purchased a home with an ADT alarm and after being hounded with ADT advertisements in our mail, I wanted to search for a reputible, local, company with great reviews. Sentry Alert is family-owned and operated and has been in business for over 35 years! And I know why, they are simply awesome! Their technician came to my home and although the ADT system kind of worked, it was so bizarre and made no sense for my needs. The technician installed a new panel (was able to use all existing alarms on my doors and windows) and gave great suggestions on additional devices. ADT did not alarm the main front window so the technician quickly added that. We also added an noise detector to detect glass breaking. I love that my family is safe and we can arm the system while we are home. I feel confident that my home is protected while we are away. I REALLY like that our keypad has panics for fire and police and that we have small keychains that turn the alarm on and off and also have panic buttons, too. Whatever you do, contact Sentry Alert. With your first phone call, you will know why they are so highly rated with Checkbook.org, Angie's list, Berkeley Parents Network, etc. read more

We got a new place and had to put an alarm system in. The system was pre-wired but an alarm company needed to be selected. I started to do my research. I had heard of ADT & Bay alarm but that was it. Yelp didn't have any good info. I finally found some decent ratings at Consumers Checkbook (www.checkbook.org). Article seem to be free: http://www.checkbook.org/interactive/homesecu/other/bay/article.cfm Ratings of the vendors requires you to subscribe (it's worth it, many vendors just aren't reviewed enough on yelp) I highly recommend reading their article on alarm systems and installers before you pick a vendor. In their survey, only two companies receive good ratings: Sentry & Redwood Security. I called both to come out. Redwood security was very good as well. My only beef is that Martin didn't really listen to what I wanted and proposed a system that I thought was unnecessary. He however was very straightforward and honest and I'm sure they would have done great work Dan from Sentry called me back and we finally setup a time to meet. Dan is a no-nonsense kind of guy, and you get the sense that he won't BS you and won't tell you a lie. I enjoyed his straight-talk and pragmatic approach and signed up. On the install day, Dean came, and we had a great experience with him. He was willing to let me tag along on the install, pester him with questions, and he still got his work done. He was able to figure out how to deal with a nicked wire and came up with another solution that worked great for me. He was able to tell me a bit about a system called Xanboo that lets you access the system over the web (why don't all these systems let you access them via the web and connect to your home wifi?) The company that did the wiring came out and I wasn't thrilled with them. Mostly because english wasn't their primary language, so communication was difficult, and they didn't show for my first appointment with them. I learned from them they used a system call "Ademco" from Honeywell. Honeywell seems to make all the systems, and I believe Ademco is the system ADT uses. Sentry uses Honeywell as well, but their "first alert" line. in theory you can change the monitoring company you use later if you want to save money. You do have to sign a multi-year agreement, which I'm not thrilled about, but it seems like that's the business model with everyone. I'm also not sold on how much benefit these systems provide, but we'll find out. I don't think Sentry is the least expensive option from a monitoring perspective, but I got great service, they are responsive to email, and they do seem to be aware of the new products available in the security market, and I don't think these guys will lie to you. read more

I wanted to use a local security service and after researching and reading various reviews, including YELP, I decided to try Sentry. What a mistake that has turned out to be. From the sales person who was next to incompetent to the security cameras that were installed that simply don't work, this has been one of the worst consumer experiences I can remember. I was upsold the idea of hard wiring the cameras because " you don't want to log on to your computer, phone or ipad and not be able to see what is going on". The security "video" cameras basically take a grainy picture every 2-3 minutes and I need to constantly log on just to get that accomplished. I would never recommend this service to anyone and in fact will be finding another service to replace this inept video security company. Please don't waste your time or hard earned money with Sentry Alert! read more

We have been with this company (formerly Sentry Alert) since the late 90's. They've been great with customer service. For example, we usually call them before we go on a trip to let them know we'll not be in the area. A couple times in a rush to leave, we not only forgot to call but also forgot to set the alarm. We remembered at a point where we couldn't really turn around (pretty stressful really). We called them and they set it remotely, so we didn't have to worry the whole trip. Needless to say, it was a relief. We've also forgotten to tell someone who was coming to do work in our home that we wouldn't be home! After contacting our neighbors (our backup) they got the person in and also got it set when they left. We just purchased a 2nd home and will most likely be having them do the security. We have done some research and called some other companies, but it's just high pressure sales, you aren't really sure what you're signing up for and they don't want to work with you on customizing for your needs and budget. You hang up the phone and your vision of what you're getting into is no clearer than when you called. We've just never had that experience with the folks at First. read more

Always good service from these folks. I did research because my parents' competitive (big-name) alarm company is deficient in so many ways. In the 15 yrs or so I've used Sentry for our commercial office building, I think I might have only seen one nominal price increase. We've never had an emergency that required an alert being sent to them, but when one of us (including me!) inadvertently sets off the alarm, they have been quick to call and patient while we stumbled trying to remember the verbal password. I am very disappointed with Sentry. It has been 10 years since I had my service installed. Last year I called about some of my entry points that were not connecting to my key pad. I was told that my batteries needed to be replaced. Batteries were replaced, I paid, problem still existed. I was told I needed a new Keypad. They installed, I paid, problem still existed. They then told me that I needed all new sensors in order for it to read to the new keypad, which would cost roughly $1000 dollars. I told them I was not able to do it at that time. One year later, the cost is now over $2700....are you kidding? I'm going with a new company and a new alarm system with monitoring that won't nickel and dime me to death. I own a locksmith business, and I know how important it is to have your house secure. Since all I work on are the locks, I searched long and hard for a good and reliable Alarm Company. After going through my channels, I heard from many people that this family owned business has the best ratting in the whole Bay Area. So I called them to have someone come out to give me an estimate. Dan came out, showed up right on time, was very personable and professional. I could tell right away that he has been doing this for quite a while and that he know what he's talking about. He offered to upgrade my old existing system for practically nothing (no charge for labor at all). After getting quotes from several companies, I decided that Sentry Alert is by far my first choice and started the service. Now, over a month in, I can definitely say that they are masters of their trade! Good customer service and quick responses to all of my testing - don't tell them I tested it on purpose ;) I highly recommend this company to anyone who needs a security system in their house or business, and it's a great way to support a small, local business. I also think that Yelp does not do them justice and can't understand how they have so few reviews, when I myself asked several people I know with their services and they are all 100% satisfied. read more

I recently bought a house and wanted somebody other than ADT for my home security; because of of some experiences I have had with ADT @ my job; and I decided to go for a smaller local company. They arrived and installed my equipment on time, were professional, set everything up, cleaned up after themselves, etc. They also stayed stayed @ the shop one day 15 minutes past closing, to wait for me, because I was on my way to pick something up there and was delayed due to traffic. In 2020, there are still companies that cannot schedule you with a tech service appointment without you reserving a chunk of your day - even when you're the first appointment of the day. In a time of pandemic when people are working from home, juggling zoom appointments and other family commitments it's a joke. I show up to work on time, why can't you? I would not recommend. - Actually we were initially told this appointment was for 8am - took the first appointment of the day to avoid exactly this kind of nonsense. They forgot to connect the front door, then they said they were not always getting a signal because they had to hook it up to a land line in building, which I told them from the beginning I did not have, then they said it would only work intermittently, and suggested I get it connected to wireless, an option they did not give me before. they want to charge an additional $300 and a three year contract. When I tried to cancel it they would not let me until the original contract which was auto renew, is up. I had not renewed with first Alarm but had renewed it with allied. They are forcing me to keep the contract although they admit it will only work intermittently, and charged me for months while it wasn't even connected to the front door. I've been a customer of First Alarm for about 7 years, and my experience with the company has been entirely positive. Over the years I've accidentally tripped the alarm quite a few times, and one of their helpful call-center employees always calls within a minute to request the verbal pass-code and make sure my house is not being robbed. When I've had technical issues (passcode reset, equipment upgrade) their technical support has always been fast and helpful. I've heard horror stories of some of the national-chain alarm companies being there for the installation and then not adequately monitoring the system, and i have confidence that First Alarm is keeping their side of the bargain, and giving me piece of mind when i leave the house. read more
