Driving back towards Atlanta I made a quick cut through to the Ringgold highway to cut time off the interstate. it was a lot of traffic almost back to 75 I saw a fire house subs store. I was delighted to see it because I had wanted to stop at Fireside before leaving Nashville but I accidentally passed it up. Too dang lazy and too much traffic to circle back around. I pulled into the store and danced in to get my favorite the hook and ladder sub. I like everything on it except those onions. I'm sure they're great but for me nope, no onions. I walked up to the counter to place my order and was behind a lady who had come in and ordered about a dozen sandwich. She seemed a little annoyed that she wasn't going to get them immediately. The staff was doing everything they could to accommodate her with the other customers that were in there. I made my order and then wandered around a few minutes waiting for my sandwich to be ready. It was ready pretty quickly though; actually faster than I expected it would be considering the big order they had just taken. Everyone there was really friendly and smiling and seem to be having a good time. Please, if you have a great big order it's polite to call ahead so the staff can get it ready for you and they don't have to rush through everything including taking care of the regular walk-in customers. Back on I 75 S. heading towards Atlanta. It is getting dark and boy I wish I was home already. It has been one long, miserable drive. At least it hasn't rained. At least I have a really good sandwich to snack on while I'm driving. I've only got like two hours to go to get home and there's no way I can eat all of this humongous delicious firehouse foot-long sub before I get there. If I did I've had to pull over somewhere and take a nap.

Although the Firehouse app doesn't work well, ordering through the browser is fine. The sandwiches are always good.

Holy moley I was not ready for this!!!!!…read more Chicken tenders - fantastic! Crispy and flavorful Green beans - honestly, I truly believe these are the BEST green beans I've ever had. And that's saying something given all I've had. Mashed potatoes and gravy - good but gravy seened a bit watered down. Mac and cheese - Meh. Decent but not much flavor. Middle of the road. Tamales - absolutely AMAZING!!!!! Definitely worth ordering. Wonderful spices, a bit spicy which adds another dimension too. Dipping sauce - omg this is so next level! Perfect balance of cream and flavor makes this one of the best dipping sauces I've ever had for chicken too!!! Wow. Now I see why this place is called Champys. Can I give this place more than 5 stars, pretty please?

We got to choose our table and had friendly service the whole time. Note that although the service is pretty good, the food coming out was a little slow. We got the 3 chicken tender basket, catfish basket, the smoked buffalo wings, and banana pudding. The buffalo wings were the highlight. Great smokiness coming through the wings. Just a little bit of heat from the buffalo sauce. Highly recommend. Everything else was pretty good. The chicken was tender, and good crisp to the outside, and good seasoning. The catfish was pretty good too although they were pretty thin so didn't get quite as much of the crunch to tenderness contrast that I like in a catfish. Also, their tartar sauce is too sweet. I prefer more tang on the sauce. I think the sauces run sweet as I thought the champy sauce was a little too sweet over mustard-y. Good fries with great texture and seasoning. I also got the green bean sides which were a little soft but great, depth of flavor as it was clearly cooked with pork. The potato salad was good if not memorable. The kids loved the banana pudding. A little too much of the cream and not enough pudding but otherwise worth getting. All in all a strong chicken spot to visit while in Chattanooga.

Casual, colorful, the kind of spot where you expect someone to walk in wearing flip flops and carrying a fishing pole. Comfortable vibe. Easy place to settle in and see what the fryer can do. First up were the fried green tomatoes. They came out looking like they'd just won a beauty pageant. Crispy outside, tender inside, cooked exactly right. Texture nailed. But flavor-wise they felt like they forgot their gym bag at home. Needed salt. Needed a little personality. A rare moment where the fryer did its job but the seasoning clocked out early. Then the headliner arrived. The fried chicken at Champy's Famous Fried Chicken has a reputation to protect, and thankfully it shows up ready to work. Crisp, flavorful crust. Juicy inside. The kind of chicken that crunches just enough to make everyone at the table look over and get jealous. "If the deep fryer had a Hall of Fame, Champy's chicken is getting a first-ballot vote." And then came the move that sealed the deal. A dip into Champy sauce. Suddenly the flavor level jumped another notch. Salty, tangy, just enough punch to make the crust shine even more. The sleeper hit though? The cole slaw. Creamy, balanced, and actually refreshing next to all the fried goodness. It's the quiet kid in class who ends up acing the exam. Easy to overlook, but absolutely worth ordering. Now for the tiny curveball. I happened to land there on karaoke night. And let's just say... the speakers believed they were performing at an arena concert. Loud enough that conversation required leaning halfway across the table and reading lips. On the flip side, the crowd was clearly having a blast. A few genuinely good singers, a few that were more... enthusiastic than talented, and plenty of people cheering them on. Honestly, respect to anyone with the courage to grab a microphone in a room full of strangers. So no star deductions for that. The people who showed up to sing were having the time of their lives. Bottom line, Champy's Famous Fried Chicken is a fun place with seriously good fried chicken. Order the bird, grab the slaw, lean into the fried side of the menu, and enjoy the show if karaoke happens to be on the schedule. Just maybe bring your singing voice... or your earplugs.

A Taste of South Texas, With Room to Improve…read more I have loved Whataburger for many years, dating back to nearly a decade of working in South Texas, where Whataburger is practically a way of life. Knowing that it originated in Corpus Christi, Texas, it has always held a special place for me. So when we heard that one was finally coming to the Chattanooga area, we were genuinely excited. When it first opened, we watched the long drive-through lines from afar and waited for things to settle down. Eventually, my wife (a native South Texan) and I visited, and later we returned with my mother. On both visits, the staff were consistently friendly, helpful, and well-staffed. The food, when fresh, tasted exactly as I remembered from Texas locations--hot, flavorful, and satisfying. In that regard, they are doing many things right. However, during our second visit with my mother, the fries were noticeably not fresh. Given the high volume and popularity, that was disappointing. My mother, in particular, was not impressed, and fresh fries are something you expect from a busy location. I also noticed some early signs of maintenance slipping. Although a staff member was attending to the dining area, the drink and napkin station was not well-kept, and the floor already looked unclean for a relatively new restaurant. These small details matter, especially when a restaurant is building its reputation. The interior seating area is smaller than what I am used to from Texas locations, but that is understandable. What matters more is consistency and cleanliness, and I hope management continues to prioritize both. Overall, I truly want this location to succeed. It brings a little piece of South Texas to our area, and when everything is fresh and running well, it is excellent. With better attention to freshness and upkeep, this could easily become one of Chattanooga's best fast-food options.
