My kid's been doing gymnastics since she was 4. Had her here for almost two years (between summer programs and actual enrollments) and I've got to be honest, her growth was stunted. She could be and she be much further along than she is. Recently, at seven, she's had the wherewithal to say, "my new class is so much harder... they actually teach us the right ways and make us do it." Says a lot. I also want to add that this gym offers Friday night fun clubs for about $40. My kid used to love them. However, recently, Fletcher decided to put my child in timeout and tell her that if she didn't do something, she wouldn't get any pizza. Now, it's 2024 and what we're NOT doing is isolating children and threatening not to meet their basic needs (food), especially without calling their parents. When I asked my daughter later about the entire situation, it was clear that Fletcher (who regularly talks too quickly and gets tongue tied) had confused my child. She was genuinely CONFUSED by what he was asking her to do. I think this made clear to me how ill-equipped folks here are to deal with children. Her confusion was SO developmental and could've been addressed/avoided with clearer instructions. But instead, you chose to punish her in an isolating and embarrassing way at what was supposed to be a fun Friday party? Without calling me? Nah, cuz. We will NOT BE BACK. Also, watching your child from a screen vs. in the gym is wack AF.

Long overdue review, where do I begin?…read more It is very hard finding a personal trainer with their own gym/studio in the upper Marlboro/Clinton/Waldorf area. I found Johnnie Boi Fitness (after the birth of my son and when I was in desperate need of a new community of associates and support). After the website and investigating a la Google, I still needed a push. I begged my husband to gift me my first set of classes. My husband is a negotiating fool. Anyone that can patiently work with him is talented. After his initial call, he called me and said, "I have a feeling you're really going to like this trainer." I do. I love Jonese and the Johnnie Boi Fitness team. What I love most is: 1) Smaller classes that allow for more one-on-one attention. I tend to be disordered and sometimes lacking confidence. I need my trainer to check on me a little. When you're standing behind 25 other people, that can be hard to do. At Johnnie Boi Fitness, it's just the right amount of personalized attention to correct you, push you a little harder and to make sure you're not injuring yourself 2) Guest instructors/class variety - Jonese offers a wide variety of classes. Perfect for someone like me who gets bored eating leftovers. Patrons can try new classes, be it yoga or boxing. These classes can be taught by other fitness experts. This allows you to throw a curve ball in your routine and not hit a plateau. Also, I like a one-stop-shop type of gym without the big Walmart feel---easy to get in, get out, work out and go. Not spend an hour looking for a parking spot, searching inside for the location of your class, and when you get there, everyone is ho hum *yawn*. Ohhh and did I mention that one day, we had hydrolyzed protein shakes made for us post workout. Sooooo good! 3) No worries if you forget something - Just like Hilton, if you forget a toothbrush, the front desk has you covered. Jonese does provide water, towels (very nice ones might I add--and nice hand towels), mats, etc. I try to remember my own supplies, but sometimes, my mind plays tricks on me. Nice to know I won't have to wipe my sweat with my sleeve. 4) Common sense - Jonese has a lot of it. The classes I attend weekly are challenging, but I'm not concerned that I'll have to get knee replacements by age 40. Over the past decade, the number of knee replacements has increased by more than 160%. I'm not concerned that my knees, hips and other joints will require major surgery because Jonese made me do 150 burpees in 10 minutes. 5) Fresh Air - we workout outside too. Nice change of scenario. I'm learning new techniques and workout strategies 6) Cost- Jonese is EXTREMELY reasonable with the cost of her classes for first timers and ongoing patrons. Affordability will never be a concern. In fact, Jonese is very accommodating, humble, friendly, compassionate, intelligent, and professional. 7) The equipment and bathrooms are ALWAYS clean. Lockers are provided to store my purse and other items. 8) The music is respectable- I'm not easily offended and don't care either way, but I love that I can bring my aunts or others to class with me and they won't hear derogatory language. I'm used to working out to Luke "I wanna rock" at home so even if Jonese decided to play a little Future or Tupac, I'm in there. Client for life! I thought I would be intimidated at first and chicken out. Best decision ever was joining Johnnie Boi Fitness! I'm very happy!

I joined this studio in 2021 to support a Black woman-owned business, but I can no longer attend…read moredue to severe safety, hygiene, and management issues. I waited until my membership ended to post this due to a documented pattern of retaliation by the owner. Safety & Environment: * Crime: Multiple cars have been stolen or broken into in the lot. The owner did not warn members and was dismissive when another member and I were personally threatened by a man on-site. * Privacy Violations: Members were filmed without consent for the owner's adult subscription site. It took multiple requests to remove the footage, and one member was temporarily banned for complaining. * Harassment: A member used racial slurs and made death threats toward others. The owner did not cancel their membership until that individual was caught stealing from the studio. Facility Maintenance: * Hygiene: Roaches have been observed on site and the owner failed to notify the community. * Equipment: Poles are poorly maintained--some sway, creak, or have cracks. Chrome-allergy risks are ignored as poles are moved without labels. The bathroom is often inoperable (clogged toilet/shower used for storage). Poor Management: * Communication: Benefits (like unlimited open sessions) were stripped mid-contract without notice, and members were penalized for using them. Different members are provided with different resolutions for the same issue. Many are provided with no resolution at all. She has switched the app used to provide studio updates 3 times within the past year and is adamant about her being the one to disseminate information through it, but not receptive to members trying to communicate with her through it. Despite switching the app 3 times she expects people to inconvenience themselves by downloading the app du jour each time and as an incentive offers benefits to members that use the most recent app, even though we all have the same membership contracts and pricing tiers. * Volatility: The owner frequently engages in disrespectful conflicts with students, staff, prospective staff, and guests. She has threatened to call the police on a member for simply raising a system issue. Supporting Black-owned businesses is important to me, but I cannot ignore the poor treatment Black women specifically have faced here. Many polers around the DMV started their journeys at this studio, because it's one of the oldest in the area. Many in the DMV pole community have left for the reasons I shared and more. Please do your research and ask around before signing a contract. I wish I had this information before starting a membership. I never would've signed up if I had known. The studio owner has publicly claimed that she's always seen as the villain and the only members that complain are those that don't get their way. But I think if she took the time to sit and reflect, listen to the community, and not approach every conversation defensively it would be a valuable experience.

For a while Colleen was the only Lyra instructor, but now they have Elixir and Lyra Bae as well. Each instructor's style varies and so do their difficulty level. With interest in Lyra still building up in the area, I think they'll have distinguished levels soon. I like to alternate between the Lyra instructors. What I love most about the studio is that it's very client/instructor centered. Schedules and class offerings are adjusted based on student interest and what the instructors want to teach. It really makes for a fun learning environment. Since joining I've gotten the opportunity to try many of their other classes, like Floor F@$?ery, Pole 1, Chair Playtime, etc. All the instructors are great at what they do and offer their own flair to each class. I have thoroughly enjoyed every instructor I've encountered. They really have me considering starting my pole journey! But I will say this: I hate their website but love the mobile app! Once you start at the studio, please download it bc it will make your life so much easier. There is also an online members only chat available. I have a great time, I never feel embarrassed, I never feel judged, like everyone is there for a good time, radiates positive energy and body positivity. So although I suck, I'm sticking to it, so one day I can climb up that pole and buss it wide open! I have gone fairly consistently at once a week since I started and I have tried four different instructors thus far. I have my favorites, but they are all great and they all have there different styles, techniques and strengths. I always learn something, I always have fun and I always leave feeling like I've had a good workout, not to mention I can always tell I've had a good workout the following day as I'm sore. I'm not gonna lie, the classes aren't cheap and the classes are popular, so you have to sign up for the class you want well in advance (about three weeks). She was friendly and let us pick the type of music we wanted to hear. I attended for a friend's birthday and I'm hooked. You'll feel sexy and clumsy (unless you already had experience), but most of all you'll learn how strong your body is. The workouts require core and arm strength of course. So if you already workout you'll be good. The studio is so cute inside! There are various instructors for each class and that work at different levels. Our instructor was great at teaching basics and intermediate and she also showed us a few advance tricks that guess what? We were about to pull off! Lol Lots of fun and sweat.
