Fast forward to 2023, I'm a 34-year-old 240lb MAN, and I decided to tap back into myself by spontaneously enrolling into a drop-in ballet class on a random cold Tuesday night, and I'm glad i did! The venue is clean and the staff is friendly and inclusive. The instructor, Rachel, was great. The class was packed and for all levels, but Rachel created an environment that made me feel comfortable and took all my nervousness (and low key embarrassment) away. i enjoyed it so much that i took my (clearly out of shape) behind to her Modern Dance class immediately after. And I paid for it... i was sore for days. It felt GREAT! :) Although both classes were for All Levels, I would've appreciated if the instructor showed movements full out instead of marking the steps and throwing us newbies to the wolves. Also I would love for Joy of Motion in general to host more adult beginning-level ballet classes or a flexibility, conditioning, and strengthening class using ballet techniques. Joy of Motion is a beautiful venue conveniently located in the up-and-coming H Street corridor. Overall, I had an amazing first-time experience and i will certainly return.

The choreography was just challenging enough to give me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, but still have something to work on at home. I was lucky to be able to take Afro Jazz that day because the class had been cancelled online (I just saw it listed on the paper schedule and decided to drop in). Fortunately, two other ladies missed the memo as well, and we ended up having a wonderful class experience. I had to ding the studio a star both because it was freezing cold in the studio and because it smelled awful when I entered. I understand that many classes share these spaces, but a hit of Febreeze air freshener before and after classes would work wonders!

I joined a class through Class Pass two years ago, and quickly decided that this studio was the right fit for me. The instructors are warm and friendly, the environment is judgment-free and unpretentious, and the dances range from simple to complex. Two years of dance later and I'm now a regular. I'm so much more coordinated than when I began, and I know most of the choreography (although I keep coming back because there are always new dances to learn!). Like any workout, you get out what you put in. Commit to moving and having a good time and you'll sweat through your clothes and feel it in your legs. Like any class, it can be overwhelming at first. Come to three classes (at least a Tuesday and Saturday breakdown) and you'll feel like a regular in no time. After 90 minutes of energetic, sassy, high cardio dancing, I leave every class with a rush of confidence and endorphins. DT has become a regular part of my routine and I would be lost without it!

You know who smiles while they work out? People at Dance Trance. Every last student in that class, including the new girl: Me. I found Dance Trance on a bit of a whim, looking to get back into dancing and also to incorporate more cardio into my pilates/yoga/barre routine. My boyfriend's refusal to join me at the Old School/New School Hip Hop Dance Party on a Friday night was the push I needed to venture to Dance Trance-- located at the Balance Gym-- to get my booty shakin' on on a Saturday morning. I went to one of the "breakdown" classes, thinking it was only an hour long. Wrong- it was two (which I learned when I arrived from my awesome instructor Lauren who made me feel totally welcome and at ease). Breakdown class is actually a half hour breakdown (learning a new routine) and then ninety minutes of dancing to a playlist. I didn't think it was possible for 120 minutes to go by so quickly, especially while exercising. To my delight, I spent the morning rocking out to awesome music. (Honestly, Lauren had me at Usher). Popping. Locking. Dropping it like it's hot. *Positive* reinforcement from a high energy and kind instructor and encouraging fellow students. This, people, is my cardio mecca and I WILL be purchasing a monthly class pass. If you used to dance once upon a time, you will love this class. If you like to dance around your apartment, you will love this class. If you're just looking for a FUN way to get some exercise that does not involve a boring gym membership or running on a treadmill like a hamster, you will love this class. If you like nice, upbeat, high-energy people you will love this class. With the $20 one week pass you have nothing to lose-- except maybe a few pounds and any inhibitions you have about shaking your booty in a room full of strangers. Some suggestions- bring water and maybe a towel. You will sweat. Bring supportive shoes. I wore dance sneakers but regular running shoes are fine. Be patient and have a sense of humor- even with movement experience, you'll be facing the wrong way or on the wrong foot until you get the hang of the routine. Nobody cares. Have fun. It's dancing. The "workout" piece is just an added bonus.

There is varied parking. Lots B and C are closest to the track but the back lot has more than enough room for overflow. The track is tucked behind fencing cut there is more than enough space for tents and space to camp out outside the venue. While it's no VA Beach or Greensboro, the space does the job. The staff was kind and the park had more than enough police presence to keep it safe.

The first features a slide, a jacuzzi and a lazy river in addition to open space. On the other side it's just lanes I believe. The facility was clean enough and has 3 family sized bathrooms for more privacy. I took interest when I read on their website that they offer a female boxing class--12 sessions for $150. I was still a bit timid (I'd never boxed before but had heard it was an excellent workout). So I talked to the trainer and decided to go in for a personal session instead. The one-on-one session was only $35 and lasted about an hour and a half! I thought I'd just be learning how to throw punches but after throwing around the medicine ball to warm up, he had me sparing with him in the ring! I learned so much in one session--- and I was exhausted. When I woke up the next morning my whole body was sore---a sure indication of a great workout! If you are a female looking for a new type of work out, I highly recommend this gym. It's a boxing gym so don't expect frills. But, the trainer is very welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable. This boxing gym trains kids as well as amateur and professional boxers so you might need to call first to determine the best times of day for you to come in.

Ive been studying Irish Dance for a few years at another school before I stumbled across District Irish Dance Academy. I took notice of them when their dancers kept placing so well at regionals. But then I did some research and digging and found out that they were just what I was looking for! They offer a very low pressure atmosphere for people who just want to dance for the love of the dance without competing. They also offer classes tailored towards performing and doing shows. And if you're looking to compete, they definitely have you covered there! The best part for me is that they also offer fitness classes that help me with my dancing, but aren't necessarily dance classes themselves. That means I can bring my non-dancer friends with me to fitness classes for fun, but rigorous workouts that we can all enjoy! The Celtic-Fit Class is a perfect class if you are looking for a fun workout that blends cardio, body weight training, and a little dance (don't worry, its super basic and low threat). The Pilates class is great for focusing on your core and building strength while learning control and breathing techniques. They let me pop in a few time to try things out before I committed to a full membership, but honestly, I knew from the very first class that this was going to be my new school! DONT EVEN WASTE YOUR TIME COMING HERE... Very weird owner and she's disrespectful, I came here for…read moremy first pole session and there was no one there as if the place was closed... Literally on maps & google the place had said OPEN, so i was very irritated about that.. I went next door to a hair salon spoke with them to see what's going on and they literally agreed it's unprofessional to have things that way... I have called multiple times before arriving with no answer (just assuming they were busy) ofc since they were reading OPEN online... Anyway, after so many attempts to reach her or someone who works there at all, I don't get a call an hear back from the owner until 4pm and it was 11:50 when i arrived at her studio!!!!!!! I explained to her that i just moved back to DC from ATL.. So knowing anything beyond what a normal person would see, i would have no idea of. However, I was recommended her studio by a friend and wanted to give a try. I also let her know how i even caught a uber there an back which totaled $54 with change. Now her response to everything??? Very nonchalant she didn't seem to care until i expressed myself further, letting her know how unprofessional that is to have your studio say open when it's indeed closed. Also when i started to record our phone call LOL SHE FELT VERY GUILTY.. I even started to ask her politely how do she plan on compensating me moving forward from this situation beings though i was interested in starting there.. Hmmm.... where do I start?…read more Oh I know.... F'king AMAZING!!!!!!! First off, let me start by saying... this is my first day back into my fitness journey....I had a relative do a private aerial yoga class with her so that is how I was able to find this hidden gem. COVID: the studio is clean and she does check and record your temperature. She offers hand sanitizer before and after class. Dawn's energy is electric and her studio has a "Girlfriends" vibes. As a newbie in her class, she introduced each of us, remembering names and birthday months. Her yoga class is more of a journey of self-love, affirmation and meditation, which is much needed in my life. She encourages you to move at your pace (which I appreciate especially because I haven't exercised since March). Once the yoga class was over we enjoyed a cup of hot tea (lavender and mint). I decided to stay and experience Barre, Buttz & Gutz... BABY, I was NOT ready for this!! LOL! It's a high energy and fast pace! Even though, I am out of shape and the first 15 mins left me wanting to tap out... I pushed through! I am looking forward to attending classes from here on out. Please look up this studio and sign up for a class or 2 or 3! Oh... not that this matters or anything... but Dawn's physique is aspiring..... I am happy to have found a fitness home!
