It took a while before we were greeted by our server. And, while it took a fairly long time for our food to make it to our table after ordering, the food was very good and the portions very generous. At first glance, the place presents itself as a neighborhood dive--a worn-in local haunt where the…read moredécor is secondary to the conversation. But the illusion fades the moment a Bloody Mary arrives at the table. This is a bar that takes its craft seriously. The cocktail was thoughtfully prepared and balanced, revealing an attention to detail rarely found in establishments trading on casual charm alone. The atmosphere is equally compelling: lively without being chaotic, welcoming without feeling manufactured. It possesses the kind of authenticity that cannot be designed or replicated. In an era of increasingly curated hospitality, this remains a genuinely local gathering place--unpretentious, distinctive, and unmistakably its own.

We like our walleye and eggs for breakfast, and decided to try out the Squirrel's Nest. It is a…read moresmall establishment with a bar to the left and seating area, to the right, with two smaller tables on the side of the bar. We arrived about 10:00 am, and it was packed. It was very loud with people talking, due to the small space. We sat at our table and waited awhile for a server, but didn't know if we needed to order at the bar. After a while, a waitress arrived to take our order. She was very joyful and friendly. We both ordered the walleye and eggs, which included hashbrowns and toast. My husband added cheese and onions on the hashbrowns at no extra cost. We also ordered a Bloody Mary, which came with a chaser. They arrived with a spear of mozzarella cheese, pimento olive, smoked sausage, and a dill pickle. The walleye had a nice thin crust and the eggs and hashbrowns were cooked perfectly. My better half said that he didn't taste any onions in the hashbrowns and they used American cheese, which made them runny. It was a good breakfast, and we enjoyed our time there. However, due to the loudness, we probably won't go back, as it was hard to have a conversation. Be aware that they only take cash, but they do have an ATM in the building. This establishment definitely had a great atmosphere and service, with friendly staff.

I love Kwik Trip for their cheap and delicious coffee ($0.69 cents for refill if you bring your own…read morecoffee mugs!) as well as their sunny, yellow ripened bananas for $0.38/lb. When I'm in a pinch I will also pick up some avocados $0.99 (at my local grocery store, they are going for 2 for $3!) and eggs. This location is open 24 hrs which is very convenient. Bathrooms are known to be clean and the staff is generally pleasant. The only downside is it has the Subway effect where you walk out smelling like their prep kitchen and the smell is hard to kill, even if you're just in and out.

If you're looking for something on the shelves the Hyvee brand is displayed front and center but many times the name brands are cheaper and of better quality. I like store brands but not at Hyvee. I've had to return many items that have expired even before I get it home. Chicken from the meat case had gone bad, green beans the next day were slimey, and green potatoes that can cause severe stomach distress and can be toxic. I don't know if the baggers go through any kind of training but it's always a mixed bag, pun indented getting your groceries packed . If you're not paying attention they will pack your meat in with produce and other foods that you have to wash even before you can put it away. This particular trip the girl didn't ask if she should put the meat in plastic. I didn't notice until I got home and had to wash the yogurt and the cantaloupe I purchased. I've noticed that all the baggers shake the bags to see if they can put any more items in the bag. It's a strange practice considering if you spend over a hundred dollars you're probably entitled to an extra bag or two. You have also have a better than 50-50 chance your bag will break even if you pick it up by the bottom. Last trip 2 out of the 4 bags broke which is typical. I've mentioned it to the owner but seems to not be a priority. You would think if it was your job to pack grocers you would do so so that the customer can avoid mishaps after they leave the store. If Hyvee is trying to compete with other stores it is hands down on the bottom list of places to shop even compared to Kwik Trip.

It's an old store, not featuring all the super cool bells and whistles the new showcase stores boast! Just rather sad.
