I hate to rain on the parade but I had high expectations after hearing everyone rave about Firecakes and I couldn't wait to check it out for myself. I did last night and ordered a sprinkles donut with a cafe au lait while my friend ordered an espresso donut with the same coffee. The donuts were delicious but honestly nothing I haven't had from a speciality bakery. I was wondering if I had maybe ordered the wrong one or if there is a must try that sets Firecakes apart but my friend felt the same way about hers. The coffee on the other hand was a wreck! It tasted completely burnt and I didn't enjoy it at all. Dousing it in sugar didn't even help. So that was disappointing to the overall experience. Four stars because it was a good donut, but nothing I haven't had before. Seating is a bit tight if it's crowded but they do have two tables outside for the warmer months. I have been here many, many times! Later in the day, around 7, there's slim pickings! Can hardly ever get what I want after 7, so come early if you're really looking for something in particular. Now, onto the donuts: Ice cream sammy - $5.25 - 3/5 This is decent if you want an ice cream sandwich. It's a glazed donut, vanilla ice cream, and hazelnut drizzle inside. It isn't mind blowing, and it is quite expensive, but it hits the spot when you want something like this. Would recommend if the mood strikes. Churro ice cream sandwich - $5.25 - 4/5 This is pretty good. It's better than their original one, probably because the donut has cinnamon sugar on it. It's seasonal for Cinco de Mayo, so it's only available this weekend. It's definitely worth a try. The donut itself was a bit crumbly -- not airy. You can choose mexican hot chocolate sauce or dulce de leche. My boyfriend and I chose the dulce de leche bc we thought the chocolate might overpower it, and I'm glad we went with the one we chose! It wasn't overbearing. It just added a nice slight caramel flavor and creaminess. Dulce de leche - $2.25 - 3/5 This was alright. We got it bc it's seasonal, but I wouldn't get again next time they have it. It was a basic donut with a cream filling and flaked almonds on top. Not bad, but not great. Worth a try if you're a fan of cream filled donuts and a slight caramel flavor that's spread on top of the donut. Mini Espresso Cream - $2.15 - 3/5 I tasted my sisters, and although I don't like coffee or espresso, this was decent for what it is. I imagine she would rank this a 5/5 bc she's a huge fan of those flavors. Definitely worth a try if you usually go for chocolate and coffee flavors. Valrhona Chocolate Iced - $2.79 - 2/5 This is the most basic donut ever. When I tried it, it was kind of dry. Maybe stale? I wouldn't get as they have other very, very delicious donuts. Steer clear. If you're a fan of chocolate, go for the chocolate hazelnut long john! You won't be disappointed with that one. Tahitian Vanilla Iced - $2.79 - 3.5/5 I'm in between with this donut. It's fluffy, but pretty sweet. There are these little crunchy balls on top that I'm actually not the biggest fan of. My boyfriend loves that element, though. I just want my donuts to be fluffy and moist! Not crunchy. It does have nice flavor, so I'll give it that. Triple Valrhona Chocolate Cake - $2.79 - 2/5 This isn't horrible, but it's really dense. I wasn't a fan at all. It's like a very dense chocolate cake. Hence the name I suppose? A waste of potential, I think, because it's all very one-dimensional. If you're into a dense batter, with just a one note chocolate flavor, maybe this'll work for you. Buttermilk Old Fashioned - $2.49 - 5/5 I had to update this because this has become my new favorite. It's always so moist and not overbearing sweet. It is sweet, don't get me wrong, but it's not sickly like the orange poppyseed. I have gotten this donut the past 4 or so times I've been here. Cute place, and great selection of donuts. Their donut ice cream sandwich seriously piqued my curiosity, but by the time we went, our tummies were full from breakfast and lunch. So we settled on a coconut cream donut which was really tasty! The uniqueness of the donut isn't just in the cream, but the cake itself is delicately balanced with coconut flakes. The uniformity in distribution of the flakes was excellent, and biting into it left a light and fluffy explosion in your mouth. I only wished that I wasn't so full to begin with; probably would have enjoyed it even more. Seating is limited inside, but it appears there's an outside covered patio around the corner that is perfect for a hot summer day; ideally if there's a breeze. Loved the vintage vibe and the tantalizing display case. The lady at the counter was pleasant as well. Firecakes is by far the best donut place I have been to in Chicago. Every time I have gone to their location I have yet to be disappointed. The service is quick, staff friendly, and best of all donuts deeeliscious. I've tried almost all of their donuts (over the last 2 years...don't judge me). My top 3 flavors are: Pistachio Old Fashioned 5/5: definitely my top donut here. They top it generously with pistachios and the flavor/sweetness of this donut is perfect. Just be sure to go early or they might run out! Chocolate Hazelnut Long John 4.5/5: My favorite donut when I'm having a chocolate craving. It's also filled which makes it ooze deliciousness (literally). Vanilla Iced 4.5/5: this one is great because not only is it really fluffy, but they put little balls (white chocolate covered rice crispies?) on top which add a nice little crunch to the bite. bonus: Orange Poppyseed 4.5/5: Really sweet but oh so good. I got half a dozen with the coconut cream, pistachio old fashioned, hazelnut long john, butterscotch, express and peanut butter flavors. All the donuts were moist and just the right consistency. The best part however is all the fillings. The most delicious and creamiest creams ever. I mean who suspected the long john would have a cream inside it. I tried the following: -Pistachio Old Fashioned -Triple Rich Chocolate Cake -Coconut Cream -Apple Fritter No - I didn't have all of these in one sitting :-) All was great and delicious...great texture and flavor. Stopped off on my way home at this location on Clark Street to try the PB&J and the Honey glazed Old Fashioned. This location had ran out of Honey glazed, so I tried the Buttermilk glazed instead. The Buttermilk OF didn't make the walk home. Amazingly crisp on the outside and soft on inside. The PB&J was a little disappointing because the peanut butter and jelly were separated and so there was never a way to get a balanced bite. First visit today to Firecakes. Overall not impressed. The donuts do not taste very flavorful. Donuts are supposed to be cakey and thick in texture, but I have no idea why there was no taste. I'm understanding that they may be gluten free, but there was no warning to the customer. I do like the ambience in their shops. I think they also have a wide selection and I admire that they sell ice cream too. But, I have to say it. I get inflation, I get the cost to produce things, but are we really at the point that donuts cost almost $20 a half dozen and $30 a dozen? This is madness. Firecakes has always been at the top of my list, however their original location just isn't that convenient for me, then a friend of mine told me about the Lincoln Park location, while technically further from my house, at least I'm in the area sometimes. I did try her favorite donut and being a chocolate lover I thought I'd be hooked, I wasn't, shows you taste is subjective. I also bought a mini meyer lemon, nothing mini about the flavor this donut packs in. Light, fluffy, tangy and sweet, just perfection, yes this is the donut I'll look for when I visit. I wish I had a photo but like everyone else who goes here we are the donuts before we even thought about it haha. We popped in here for some food redemption after a bad eating experience and I have to say that it made up for it haha. I am teetering between the 3 and 5 star rating for this one because the donuts are fairly expensive, but I guess you should expect to pay for quality right? Perhaps I'm also considering the previous lackluster food experience of the day in my rating decisions, but I promise that if you come here, the redemption will be sweet haha. I don't thing you can go wrong no matter what donut you get. The drinks are good too, you just gotta get your tea and coffee back to the car before they get cold because right now there's no inside seating. Favorite doughnut spot in Chicago. I was so jazzed when they opened one of these in Lincoln Park. This is definitely an indulgent dessert-type doughnut. I think they are a little excessive to eat for breakfast, because they are very sweet and cakey. But these doughnuts literally just melt in your mouth and are absolutely amazing. Hmm. What could I say about this place? This shop has nice interior decor and the donuts on display make you want to buy them all! They all look fancy and pricey, which they are if you compared them to any regular donut shop. I got here an hour before they closed and I was surprised they still got lot of selections. I finally come up with Long John, Pineapple Bacon, gluten-free Triple Chocolate, and Red Velvet. Long John is hands down the best among the other three. It's pretty big in size and they put generous amount of custard inside. Definitely worth trying if you're in the area and going to visit Firecakes. Gluten-free triple chocolate was amazing. It tasted more cake like and it wasn't sweet at all. I really liked it! I think it's perfect for someone who's not really into sweet. Between Red Velvet and Pineapple Bacon, I can't decide which one is better. They tasted just okay in my preference. The Pineapple Bacon was small in size and less dense in texture than Red Velvet. While the Red Velvet had cake-y taste to it, the icing on top just got me sick of it. It was just too sweet. Overall, not all the donuts here are amazing. I've had an issue with donuts for the past few years in which no donut has been able to live up to my expectations. I used to LOVE donuts! I have fond memories of dad bringing home a dozen on Saturdays and those were dunkin donuts. I guess a combination of my tastes changing and donuts being made differently, but for the past few years, the quality of donuts I have sampled had left me believing that I no longer liked donuts. Flash forward to today. Feeling a bit down about certain recent events and feeling a bit stressed about my long work day, I decided to mix things up before work, to go somewhere I've never been and try something different. Firecakes was the spot I chose and A Red Velvet and a Buttermilk Old Fashioned were my choices for donuts (I just couldn't choose!) They were both great. I ate the Red Velvet which was unlike any donut I have ever had. It was cake-like and crumbly and cream filled with just enough cream. I will remember that donut! The Buttermilk was excellent too, but the Red Velvet was the better of the two. I dunno if I will ever return. I appreciate the person behind the counter putting the chocolate frosted doughnuts in individual boxes to keep from having paper pull the frosting off. The location is very small and extremely tight. It's good for get-and-go. Unfortunately, some customers linger and plenty become utterly indecisive when they arrive. I'm still trying to grasp the prices, as I am with all of the doughnut shops outside of Dunkin Donuts and a certain doughnut shop in the Cragin neighbourhood. So on my Chicago food tour, firecakes was stop number 3. I have to admit I was sooo excited after hearing all the hype about firecakes. I'm an ice cream fanatic so naturally I had to get the ice cream donut sandwich. I honestly had very high expectations, but it fell a little short. First, you could only choose between two donut flavors for the sandwich and only between two ice cream flavors too. I was a little disappointed you couldn't choose between any of the flavors, but I'm sure there's a reason why. The donut was very tasty, but didn't blow me out of the water like everybody had said they were going to. All of the other donuts looked very good but they didn't have much of a variety. And as for the regular donuts, while my fiancé liked the taste, there were only like four flavors to choose from. Great donuts! Loved the sitting area inside, great for people watching right by the window ;). The girl working behind the counter was super attentive, helpful, and willing to answer any of our questions (we took a while to decide..). We grabbed a few different kinds of donuts: the chocolate glazed, red velvet, triple chocolate, and the hazelnut long john. The hazelnut long john was filled with Nutella and was absolutely delicious! The only thing is I wished they used real Nutella, because it seemed like they mixed it with some sort of filler (whip cream?) so it wasn't as heavy as normal Nutella. I think my favorite donut was the red velvet with cream cheese frosting!! Next time we come in...
