My original reason for calling the company was because I had birds in my chimney. Upon arrival, Rob, the owner, inspected both my furnace & fireplace chimneys and my fireplace. He pointed out things that needed to be repaired in both chimneys and my fireplace and what was not up to code. These are things an inspector missed! I was so thankfully he noticed these things and was able to fix them to make my house safe! Everything was written out for me with all the prices. His worker was very professional and worked efficiently. I don't even think he took a break! He came back the next day and finished the work. I would highly recommend this company! My initial estimate appointment was scheduled with a window of 10-11am. At 12 Rob called informing me he was 'running late.' When I reminded him of our agreed upon schedule, he said that I must have written it incorrectly, and he had me written down with a window of 12-2pm. I thought I may have made a mistake and had him out for the estimate. Rob indicated that my ~1978 fireplace insert needed to be tuck pointed and my flue needed to be fully replaced. I had decided to move forward with him and applied for a permit with Schaumburg. Rob and I each received an email explaining he needed to obtain a license to work in town before the permit would be approved. I called Fire It Up the next day and left a VM asking for a followup to ensure the permit would be completed. Several days later Rob messaged asking to re-visit the house to ensure he has the correct flue and parts and that he could come out to finish the job 'next week.' When asked about the permit status and email, Rob was unaware of the email, the phone call, or the permit requirement. He said he would handle everything and we setup an appointment from 2-3pm, for a "quick 15 minute inspection for the parts needed." Again, the time came and went. At 4pm Rob called saying that he was again 'running late' and that he would be out before 5pm. When I reminded him of the schedule, he said, again, that he wrote down the time between 3-5pm and that I, again, made a mistake. I know that I did not make a scheduling mistake twice because I was unavailable after 4pm. While I understand issues happen, jobs run long, and that schedules sometimes get messy, the way he handled his communication does not give me confidence in his ability to complete the work on time, as scheduled. We've had a wasp problem in our fireplace the past few years. During the summer months 15-20 wasps make their way down our gas fireplace and into our home. I have two small children so once I realized what was happening I resorted to taping the glass doors up each season while watching them all flying around inside. It's been awful, and when I called different exterminators and fireplace companies they all gave me the same response of tough luck, not much can be done. The exterminators recommended us lighting our fireplace every few days in the summer and the fireplace companies recommended a brand new fireplace costing thousands of dollars. Last week, a cold night in Chicago, with me jetlagged from Europe, our carbon monoxide detector (Nest Protect) went off and we had to air out the apartment. We turned off the oven, fireplace and HVAC. And then slowly reintroduced each one, hoping it wouldn't set it off again. The oven and HVAC were fine. With the fireplace smelling odd that evening, and flames behaving abnormally, we decided that was most likely the source of the CO. My husband requested several quotes and spoke with a few businesses to have someone come check out our fireplace and chimney, do a cleaning, and let us know if there was anything wrong. He was on time during the window he gave us, and worked diligently for a couple hours to clean our chimney, reset our fireplace, check the roof, and ended up discovering major gaps in our fireplace walls and gas pipe that could cause the CO to build up and exhaust back into the apartment, vs. outside. Wouldn't even accept a cash tip! We are slowly testing the fireplace for CO, but so far are okay. No smells and no weird flames yet. Day 1 I loved Robert and Fire it Up Chimney. He is very knowledgeable and went above and beyond. Day 2 is where the problem occurred, after working around the hot water heater and my chimney I was informed that a small amount of gas smell was normal. It wasn't and turned out to be a pipe that had become loose. Fast forward to Nicor coming and turning off my gas, having to air out my house for many hours and then the added expense of having a plumber come out and fix the pipe. We own a 1930 bungalow in Berwyn, Illinois, with a fireplace in the Living Room. One of the reasons we bought this house is that we love hanging out by a nice fire.
