Fire & Ice is one of those touristy Boston restaurants meant for the tourists. It's not a place to go for serious food. It's more like, you go for the kitch appeal. You pick out your raw ingredients and bring it all somewhere else to have a guy cook it for you on a giant grill and you stand there awkwardly waiting for it to be ready whereby you then take it and sit down. I think Fire & Ice has a kind of cool idea and I thought, being such a picky eater, that I would love it. But I did not. I think the set up is poor (the tables are way too close) and it gets crowded at the grill. I think it's dirty - the table and seats were sticky (the last time I experienced that was my niece's birthday at Chuck E. Cheese). The stations all seemed dirty as well. I've never even been here for the Mongolian. If you eat at the bar downstairs on a weeknight, you can get cheap apps before 6:00 ($3) and cheap Rolling Rock all the time ($2 plus tax). Those are Biddy Early prices in a Smith & Wollensky neighborhood. I hear they serve food on a grill upstairs. I've also seen staff leave the men's restroom without washing their hands. Um... seriously? I've been to Fire and Ice a few times. I went back on Monday night with my boyfriend and one of his friends. His friend loves this place but no one will go with him because they all hate it. We passed a huge group of teenagers and got seated. The hostess asked if we were part of the "college". I guess that s hould have been my first warning sign. Since I hadn't been there in a while and my boyfriend had never been, the waitress offered us a tour that she would give once she came back with our drinks. We sat around for 10 minutes and she never came back, so we figured it out ourselves. The idea of Fire and Ice is cool, I'll admit that. But the novelty wears off when I get a tiny bowl of food, wait 20 minutes for my food to be cooked next to a bunch of other food, and then get it back missing half of what I originally put in since it got mixed in with someone else's food. The idea is cool, but it also kind of grossed me out. Also, it felt exactly like a college dining hall. I was having flashbacks to my days at Northeastern. Been to similar places and I enjoy the concept. The food was tasty, the selection was pretty good. We went on a Monday night, so the price was right ($9.95 each). They brought us chips right after we sat down, good idea, nice touch -- unfortunately they were pretty stale. A bad way to start the meal. The place was packed and noisy be expected on the discounted college night I suppose. The music was extremely loud, and really bad. We could barely hear our waitress. I was looking forward to celebrating my 92 yr old mother and family at Fire & Ice. The food was good. Everyone had a great time meeting and greeting mostly cousins that they had never met or seen in a long time. But they lack good customer service skills for large parties. I eat out often and on many occasions are with large groups that require individual checks for payments. But was not afforded that opportunity there. I was not advised of the payment process until many people had already begun eating and it was almost impossible to break down the check in a way to say who had what and what they were responsible for paying. The staff was not helpful in this matter at all. But we were obligated to pay a $169.00 automatic gratuity because of the size of our party. This process ruined the entire evening for us. This is one of the the things they should tell customers ahead of time, so that they can plan for it. read more

Choose your poison buffet style with a hot plate and sauce that they grill for you. Good service and did I mention you choose your own items? My first dish was a Caribbean style pork/chicken with black beans and a spicy sauce. Then I moved onto asian seafood with a pineapple glaze and calimari/tilapia. Third course I just did salad since I didn't want to hold my friends up. Finished up with a drink at the bar called the "Grateful Dead". I'm use to the concept featured at this establishment in Mongolian barbeque restaurants in California, but they do an okay job here. We were looking for a place to eat in the Back Bay on a Sunday before a piano recital and stumbled upon Fire and Ice. It was okay but not great. Still would go back in a pinch. The quantities of vegetables, meat and seafood available seemed fresh. I was impressed by the grill attendant's attention for I selected squid and they cooked quite nicely. They are also attentive to folks with food allergies. On Sundays, they also do omlettes and pacakes. You pick the fillings and they fry it uo to order. The sauce I selected was okay but, once again, nothing that stands out. Still for $13.95, it was a decent price for what we received. If we choose to, we could have gone back for seconds (and thirds) but chose to eat sanely. One of my biggest complaints was with their ice tea. What is it about trying to get a decent glass of ice tea around here? It was the unsweetened instant stuff that I find revolting. It doesn't take that much to make real ice tea! I can't imagine making the real ting will effect the bottom line. It is one of my pet peeves, but I simply can't stand instant ice tea, especially when offered at "finer" dining establishments! read more

The heat radius extends all the way to the tables. It's inescapable -- whether it's summer or winter time this place is just too warm. You have two options: (skip to 1) Order a drink: the bigger the better. Try the Fire bowl, or the Ice bowl, if they're anything like a scorpion bowl you should be having a good time! (skip to 2) Run to the ladies room and remove layers or put on a mini-skirt, if you are going to melt anyway, you may as well minimize the sweat stains. (1) After debating over which adult beverage to order, your friends convince you to split a Fire and Ice bowl. Great presentation, each drink is in a large goblet with more than enough straws for you, your party and any random people walking by the table. Beware: don't get poked in the eye with the 30 straws they put in each drink! And good luck trying to remember which one's yours. You take a sip and realize it tastes similar to fruit punch -- Very tasty alcohol-free fruit punch. With a $17.99 price tag, it's just not worth it. Now what? (skip to 3) fill your bowl with raw meats and veggies and have yourself a dinner or (skip to 2) run to the ladies room. (2) You run to the ladies room and are relieved that it's several degrees cooler. To you're surprise there is a black light in the restroom, it makes you feel like you're in a club not a restaurant, but it did come to your attention that this place is really loud and the music has mad beats, yo. More than you were expecting at a restaurant without a dance floor. What should you do next? (skip to 1) Order a drink or (skip to 3) get some grub? (3) Alright, you're doing it, you're making your own crazy meal concoctions -- you feel tempted to load up your bowl on the first pass, but you realize you can have a better variety if you frequent the raw buffet and get smaller portions. If you can go up more than three times you're a hero! [The end] --- Cons: - Hearing "happy birthday" once is bad enough, but hearing it 3 times during dinner, is overkill. I would suggest this place for lunch instead of dinner, as it seems to be a better deal. The only difference I'm aware of is that they add shrimp and a little bit more seafood for dinner, but with the increase in price I wouldn't say that's worth it unless those are your favorites. A group of college students going on College Night is a really great deal. It's not often you find all-you-can-eat food for $10. If you don't like to leave a restaurant feeling way too full, this place probably isn't for you. I went on a summer weekday for lunch around 3 o clock and it wasn't packed at all. Despite this, the wait around the grill for our food to be cooked was still uncomfortably long for each trip. That would be my only real complaint. Drinks were brought in a timely manner, and all the food was well-stocked at the buffet bars. I would say the frozen drinks are a little on the pricey side but that is to be expected. When I first encountered the idea of Fire and Ice I didn't think I would be a fan at all; for me, being served food put together by a trained chef is the whole point of going out to a restaurant. After a few trips there I've really warmed up to it though. It's a great place to go if everyone in the group isn't really looking for the same thing. Even though I personally think the Asian-style sauces and combinations work best here, if someone wants a burger or pasta alfredo or meat with BBQ sauce, all those options are also available. It really is the range of sauces that opens this place up to such variety. Overall: don't come here if you're not in the mood/not the type of person to create your own combinations of food. Haven't been here in a few years, and while the place hasn't changed much, and he food hasn't changed drastically, there were a few nice additions, including new sauces and a spice area to add to the flavors. The food overall is pretty standard, nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either. Went up on two separate occasions (you feel obligated to when it's a buffet...however I always regret going up for seconds - too much food). The first round I had shrimp, some veggies, rice noodles, and mixed the hoisin sauce with the Mac and cheese sauce. Sounds like a terrible combo, but it wasn't bad. The second round I made simple fajitas with chicken, shrimp, veggies, and the fajita sauce. I should stick to getting Mexican food at Mexican restaurants. The price is 18.99 for all you can eat, which you think is a good deal, but the reality of it is you are getting average food at an above average price. If you do end up getting multiple plates, it's worth the price, but you can get more than enough food with one go around. Service was great with our waitress very on top of filling up our drinks. It should be noted they are currently under renovation in the downstairs bar area, but it doesn't effect you getting your food. I've came here before and the food was super good and so was the service. Last time I went we were sat at a dirty table and the hostess walked away without cleaning it. We sat down without a server for 20 minutes. We got our food and it was pretty good we had to walk around and ask for someone to bring us silver and drinks. We made a 3pm dinner reservation about a week and a half before New Years Eve. We arrived and were seated. Very good wait staff and the food was also very good. It was our first time at this type of restaurant. Our issue was when we got the bill for the dinner. It was delivered to the table, we reviewed it and were preparing to pay. The original bill was about $275 dollars, which is in line with published prices for a group of eight. Suddenly the server pulled the bill from the table saying it was a mistake and returned with a new bill for $403 dollars for the same items. He stated that it was a "New Year's Eve" special as they provided a champagne toast, which was only offered after we disputed the bill, and dessert, a prepackaged woopie pie. We objected to the switched bill to 2 managers and they would not budge. We should have been made aware of the pricing change when making the reservation or at least when we were seated. Amazing location, so much better than their other location in Cambridge! My boyfriend and I are frequent customers here and we love it! The OpenTable App allows you to make easy reservations, and Monday is college night for $10! Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and surprised him with 15 or so of out friends, he loved it and everyone had a great time! Would recommend this restaurant 100x over. Great service, good food, and a good night out! This location is the best that I've been to. So easy to get to walking from the t station. Couldn't be happier with the way this place runs, the cooks know what they're doing and they make a show out of cooking for you. The food is what you make it. I'm surprised at the negative reviews I see here. I went with a companion this past Sunday evening -- and earlyish (5.30 or so), so there was no problem with waiting, or with lack of a reservation. The setup is as others have described: you choose from a wide-ranging selection of pastas (including whole-wheat penne), meats/poultry/fish, vegetables, sauces and spices, and then bring it to the large circular central grill, where four chefs grill up your selections for you. We'd actually been expecting a sit-down sort of place, but we gave it a go. Of course, you have to choose judiciously -- the wrong mixture of, say, meats and fish, or fish and sauces, isn't going to come out right. Since my own dining tastes are moderately conservative, this wasn't a problem for me. Everything I chose came out tasty, and my companion was also quite pleased. Beverages (which we had) and desserts (which we didn't) cost extra. The evening's drink special, a strawberry-basil margarita, was quite good -- the basil was a nice undertone -- although pricey. read more

I'm from out of town but every time I come here I love it. My most recent time I went was 12/31/19 (NYE) for lunch. There are a lot of options of noodles, vegetables, and meat to choose from.. However, I wish there was an egg option to put in my food. The only complaint is that the wait for the food with allergies that they cook in the back is a little long. By the time I would get my food the other people that I was eating with we're done. Also, the food was a little overdone with soy sauce or didn't have enough. Despite this, I will still come back! The ladies room: YUCK. No TP, later some rolls stood ON THE FLOOR, overflowing trash bin of paper towels, in the stalls an overflowing feminine product container, swamped sink area ...... all so unhygienic. During my second trip to the (ick) ladies room a waitress stood next to me fixing herself up - I would have thought she would notice the disgusting situation. The men's room: for my extremely laid-back husband to come back from the men's room and comment on its condition should tell you something. And that was not a positive comment. Rarely does something bother him, but your men's room did. Enough said. The waiter: drinks were ordered and brought quite swiftly, but then it all went downhill. He neglected us for the rest of our visit. We stacked our multiple plates (for FIVE PEOPLE), waiting for them to be cleared. To his credit he apparently came by twice while my husband and I were at the grill, but that was about the last we saw of him until we asked someone to ask him to bring the check. Then he apparently forgot to even come by to run the credit card. His muscles were big, but I guess not his attention span. VERY poor service - starkly in contrast to my last visit on 11/02/2010. Lovely and attentive young woman - I wrote to you to compliment her then. The menu: one of our menus was covered in gross sticky stuff - pointed it out to our waiter but we're not sure that menu was taken out of rotation or cleaned. Our booth (by the Ice Cream Bar): It was great to be seated immediately at the dinner hour, but I hope that you soon fix that window which is gaping (VERY cold to those sitting next to it). On Sunday it was TAPED but didn't keep out the breeze. Taped shut???? Really? The cooks: LOVED those guys. In good spirits and engaging in a very hot and repetitive job. Not many venues can feed a party of 8 and still have everyone happy at the end. Fire and ice was able to do this and more. The selection is quite vast especially considering the price. It is also a great place to take friends who are vegetarian as they can still be stuffed at the end. Hap-hap-happy Birfday!!! I got to hear the lovely song about 3-4 times throughout the night. But let's go on with the food review, service is another story. The food was good. Two cuts of beef, three kinds of chicken meat, and other sausage, pasta, and vegetable goods. Gotta go for the meats though, that's where the moolah is at. The sauces are a lot better than the last time I visited, honey garlic all the way! After piling up the beef, cajun marinated chicken and other goods, I went over to the big circle grill and got it all cooked up. Now let's rewind and start from the beginning if you're actually interested in service too. It started with a dose of 40 minute wait for a 6:30pm reservation because of the Vday weekend and birthday party customers. There were servings of pizza and soda for the wait to my surprise. After getting seated we got a second helping of waiting 7 minutes for a server to come greet us at the table, only she wasn't our server yet she took our order, and then waited a total of 10 minutes for our real server to take the order and actually get us drinks. Granted our server was helping out a big group for a birthday party, really Fire+Ice? You guys do birthday parties all the time, yet you can't delegate a server to serve tables while others are busy with a big party? And please tell your servers to not take an order from a table they aren't assigned too. The server never returns and leads to disappoint. Thankfully, after looking very disappointed/bored during the start, the server did a good job checking in with my group about 7 times throughout the night. Nevertheless, this place seems pretty big and hip with the crowds, the atmosphere is very casual, the music is super loud, and you can eat whatever you want, but still I don't think I will be returning because I wasn't impressed with anything. I've been to this one a lot, and a few years ago it was great. However, the past 2 times I've gone, the service has been HORRIBLE. The first time, our waiter completely forgot about us and did not bring our drinks until we were done with our meal (we received a free desert for the bad service). Yesterday when we went, our server did not bring us the complimentary rice and tortillas until we had to ask her. When we were picking our food, someone was sweeping the ice that had fallen--right onto my fight. The best part was when I tried to move so he would stop, he kept flinging them in our direction. I'm so disappointed in the new renovation that i had to download Yelp just so i could write this review. I've been going here for years. It's always a great time and the atmosphere was dim, active, comfortable and all around fun. It had a certain vibe to it. A place you could bring a date or a massive group of friends. This new look is just so...soulless. I actually gasped when I first walked in. It looks and feels like a high school cafeteria. The floor is a dull grey concrete look with no variations in finish or carpeting. The seats and tables are all cheap looking and loosely arranged. My table was very wobbly and from the looks of it, most of them were. They removed all the comfortable and stylish booths, except for one of the circular ones in the back. The lighting has been completely redone, it's now twice as bright in there which kills the personal and intimate atmosphere it had before. It feels like a place where you look across the restaurant and shout to your friends at another table rather than be close with whoever you are with. It just feels like they were trying to be 'hip' and 'contemporary' and try to turn themselves into a panera or 'local organic lunch bowl-serving' kinda place. Which is not what they are. They have a unique, fun, and engaging concept and this new look just strips all of that away and replaces it with something generic. The food is still great, which is what will bring me back. But the look is so off putting and counter-intuitive to what the concept of the restaurant is that i won't be coming here nearly as often. It's that bad. read more

if you asked me my favorite restaurant 10 years ago, I'd give the same answer that I do today: Fire + Ice. What is it about this place that tops everywhere else? Well, it's a combination of selecting exactly what you want to eat, throwing it in a bowl, being surrounded by young people, and a full bar with huge, tasty drinks. Maybe it's also the nostalgia of going to this chain back in college: first in Harvard Square and now the more convenient location for me in Back Bay. The price is right, the ingredients are fresh (I've been dozens of times and never gotten sick), and the chefs always make for a good time. If you've never been to Fire + Ice, definitely give it a shot. Weeknights are typically quieter and it's really great to go with a large group. This place is birthday and bachelorette party central. It's great for HUGE groups. I was there with a group of 20+ people and the "cooking" process is a great ice breaker by giving people a chance to mingle. But why is it called fire and ice? I get the fire part. Where is the ice? The food was ok. My only tip is make sure you DO NOT put your sauce on your ingredients. The guys on the grill will yell at you that your food will burn, ignore your food as it is cooking and hand you a plate of char. read more

Yeah it's pretty cool and there's a huge variety of ingredients to choose from, BUT...they take FOR-EVAHHH to make your food. So I went back once for another plate of food but not a third time because it honestly took a good ten minutes each time. And, in leaving your food on the grill for frikken ever, my noodles got all crispy. I wanted soft noodles. Then he couldn't find the reservation so he let me up anyway, after I stood there for a good few minutes waiting for him. We had a group of 12, and we wanted to find a 'fun' place to eat. We had been given the idea of eating at Fire + Ice from several people. I was surprised that the first reservation I was able to secure was for 8pm. Even more shocked when we got there and the restaurant was half empty! The idea is great (and its good for people who may have picky eaters). You go up to a salad bar type area and pick your protein, pick your veggies and pick your sauce. Then, you take it to the big Mongolian grill and they cook it for you. It's kind of like a show. People have fun. Some disappointing things - they have soup up but the bar. The soup of the day was chicken & sausage. I opened it up to get some, and it was all dried up like the soup had been sitting there for days (no joke)! Also, the service was just okay. We didn't see our server much. A bunch of people in the group ordered Mojitos, and they were disappointingly sweet. They also didn't seem to have been shaken or stirred as there was sugar at the bottom of the glass. I can understand demoting Fire and ice for its service, but if the food tastes bad, that's probably your own fault, partner. Since you choose everything that goes into your meal and the options and pretty endless, there's something for everyone. Plus, what youngin' doesn't like all you can eat of your very favorite meal for $10. If I'm feeling like a pig, this is where I go. I agree that the service takes awhile and can be somewhat unpredictable. One day when I went there, you had to stand at the grill and wait for your food, then on the next visit, I was told to leave my bowl on the grill and my waiter would bring it back. It took a lot longer when I was waiting on my waiter to deliver the food than when I waited at the grill, for sure. Also, I don't know why anyone would go there to eat downstairs in the menu only section... seems to defeat the point of going to a Mongolian Grill, if you ask me. read more

This place is more about the experience than it is about the food. It's perfect for large parties (6+). It's buffet style. You grab a bowl, visit each station and pick out what you want. All the food is raw. When you're done, you head over to the sauce station, and pick from7+ sauces. My fav. is the sweet chili sauce. After that you head over to the huge circular grill in the center of the room. One of the cooks will grab your food and cook it right in front of you! The process is pretty quick, usually no longer than 5 to 10 minutes. Once it's done, they hand your food to you on a plate and you can head over to your table to chow down. And you repeat this process as many times as you'd like :-) As I stated before, the food isn't amazing, but it's a fun place to go being that it's so interactive. So, if you want decent food and a fun experience, Fire & Ice is the perfect place to go to. read more

My brother took my boyfriend and I to this buffet but it was such a different experience than any other buffet that we have been to. There is a huge grill that everyone stands around to get their food cooked. Its unlimited food with all types of meat, seafood, pasta, vegetables, and rice that you can think of and all types of sauces and spices that you can choose from. Concept is just ok and food pretty good. Waitress was nice. Lava flow drinks clearly needed a touch more alcohol, tasted like they were virgin. Only real disappointment were the cooks. Not friendly, not funny, not nice, and not great at cooking your food. The cooks would yell at you if you didn't stand around the waiting table at the grill where you were supposed to, got peoples orders confused with each other and most disappointing were the extended long waits standing their waiting for them to actually cook your order, probably like 15 minutes or more between courses. read more

Host was atrocious. Disappearing with a big line of people waiting. When we finally got to the front he took not 1 but 2 phone orders while we stood there staring at him. By the time we got upstairs and saw it was college night and the place was mobbed. we walked out. read more
