I did the basic boot camp that spanned 3 consecutive Saturday sessions. Nice, clean and private learning facility in a cool location downtown upland. The instructor was Michael and he was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and good and explaining the information and fielding questions as we moved through the material. The classes were broken up into nice lesson segments and although each had a different main focus there were recurring things a lot too which helped seeing them integrated in different contexts. I feel confident that practicing the skills we learned in class will help me utilize excel much more efficiently and I feel that with this base I could also teach myself new things more effectively too using online aids. She genuinely cared about her students and made sure we understood the material instead of just memorizing it. She was always patient, encouraging, and willing to answer every question we had. She created a classroom environment where we felt comfortable learning, and you could tell she wanted every one of us to succeed. Because of her, I felt confident in the skills I learned throughout the program. I honestly can't thank her enough for everything she did for us. At the beginning of the program, everything was running smoothly. There was a front office employee named Dale who was incredibly helpful, especially when it came to financial aid and answering questions. She was always available, knowledgeable, and made the process much less stressful. Unfortunately, after Dale left, things became very disorganized. Communication became difficult, especially as we got closer to completing the program and preparing for externships. Many of us reached out with questions, but it often took a long time to receive a response, or we didn't receive one at all. The biggest issue has been the externship placement process. It's now been a few weeks since I completed my classes, and I still have not been placed at an externship site. Several of my classmates are experiencing the same issue. We've been trying to contact the school for updates, but communication has been inconsistent. This has become stressful because many of us have jobs, family responsibilities, or are returning to college soon and need to complete our required externship hours. Overall, I think the quality of the education depends heavily on the instructor. Mrs. Alex deserves five stars for everything she did for our class. However, the administration and organization of the externship process have been disappointing. I hope the school improves its communication and placement process because students deserve better support after working so hard to complete the program.

I enrolled in HealthStaff Training Institute's Phlebotomy Technician program using my Workers' Compensation Supplemental Job Displacement Voucher (SJDV) because I was serious about starting a new career. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely stressful and disappointing. My instructor, Courtney Mason, CPT 1, was involved in numerous issues I experienced during training. I was called "sensitive," told I was not a good fit for phlebotomy, and told that I could not draw blood and should repeat the course or consider another career. I strongly disagreed because I had successfully performed venipunctures. I also experienced disputes over my clinical records. I reported completing numerous successful blood draws, but the school's records reportedly reflected substantially fewer. I believe my completed clinical work was not accurately credited. During training, another student injured my arm while attempting a blood draw she missed my vein and was fishing in my arm with a needle causing excruciating pain. I felt the instructor was not adequately supervising what was happening, and I was subsequently told that I had caused the injury to my own arm. I was also told that I needed to bring my own blood-draw volunteers from outside the school because the school would not provide volunteers for me to complete my required draws. I also had significant administrative issues involving Kavita Mathrani, Director of the Ontario Campus.  My concerns about my status, training, completion requirements, and ability to graduate were handled through administration. What makes this especially confusing is that I was ultimately prevented from completing my original cohort, yet I was later told that I was not formally suspended, expelled, or dismissed. My classmates graduated on May 29, 2026. I did not. I was held back from graduating with my cohort and ultimately placed on a Leave of Absence with additional training requirements scheduled for November 2026. Then came an incident that I consider extremely serious from a health-and-safety standpoint. On June 13, 2026, while at school, the classroom was extremely hot. The HVAC was not functioning properly, and there were missing ceiling panels. I asked the instructor to adjust the temperature before things got out of control never happened. While performing a blood draw, I became overheated, nauseated and lightheaded, passed out/lost awareness, and fell backward, injuring myself. I ultimately required ambulance transportation late on in the day and emergency medical treatment. I also experienced difficulties obtaining school information needed for my EDD appeal, including documentation concerning the school's training-provider status the school had me email information concerning my appeal and did not respond to my request. What makes this entire situation even more frustrating is that my training was being funded through a Workers' Compensation SJDV. I am now questioning whether the voucher funds were properly administered while I was unable to complete my original cohort. I am pursuing complaints with the appropriate agencies because I believe these issues deserve independent review. My advice to prospective students: PLEASE do your homework before enrolling. Ask exactly how clinical draws are documented, how many draws you must complete, who provides your blood-draw volunteers, what happens if you're injured, how medical restrictions are handled, what happens if you fall behind, and what happens if you're unable to graduate with your cohort. Get everything in writing. HealthStaff advertises itself as providing practical, industry-focused training and says it assumes responsibility for helping students develop job-ready skills.  My personal experience did not match what I expected when I enrolled. This is my firsthand experience, and I am sharing it so prospective students can make an informed decision before investing their time, money, and career plans.

Oscar was patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely dedicated to student success. Being in a one-on-one setting allowed for focused instruction, and he even continued to assist me after he left the school--something I truly appreciated. However, after the classroom portion ended, the experience became difficult. I completed my classes in mid-January and was told I was ready to begin my externship, but didn't receive placement or meaningful communication until mid-March. I had to follow up repeatedly just to get updates. The clinic I was placed at was also in Los Angeles, which was not convenient given the school's Ontario location. Additionally, I received several forwarding emails that I was meant to be out of, other student email responses from a licensing issues--something that should have been handled more professionally and privately. While I'm thankful for the instruction I received from Oscar, the lack of structure and follow-through on the administrative side left a bitter part to my experience and was slightly misled by some of the faulty 5 star reviews left

The only thing you really need to survive AFA is a sense of humor (that goes for the guys too) I remember sitting in college, debating whether it was the right path for me or if I should take the leap and pursue a trade. I'm beyond glad I did. I have absolutely no regrets about attending AFA. Ralph, Ronnie, Doc, and Kyle not only taught me during my time there, but they continue to teach and support me even after graduation. Whether I need extra practice or advice, before an interview or for a weld test their doors are always open. Luke, Robert, Marcio, and Gus have also been incredibly supportive and instrumental in helping me grow in my welding career. Never in a million years did I think I'd find myself in aerospace, but here I am and I couldn't have done it without the amazing team at AFA.
