I've always enjoyed the food. Christmas Eve they didn't open until 11:00. That seems a little late considering it's the busiest day of the year for fish. Called the Hooked seafood company and they were open at 9:00 and reserved the mussels we were looking for. Fin is exactly what this area needs. I love when you can walk into a place and pick the owners brain on a variety of issues. Pete, Dora and staff are so knowledgeable about their products. They can tell you where and when your fish was caught and provide excellent recommendations for preparation. The fish is incredibly fresh, I don't think I've ever had fish this fresh except on the coast. I've heard there may soon be an oyster bar which is exciting. They also will sell you heads and fish parts for making your own stock (I feed it to my dogs). Even if you like fish but are afraid of preparation, they have easy-prep meals ready to just pop into the oven. Those change daily and you can find out what they are on their Twitter feed or Facebook page. I haven't tried any of them yet but they always sound really tasty. read more

Four for the fish counter -- relative to Albany -- and a weak three for the dine-in experience. The fish: there is every evidence that the claim of daily shipping in from Boston/NE ports is correct, as both times we've been there we've found North Shore catches that have been both fresh and tasty. The prices are inflated a bit, but that's just the inland pricing to cover the transportation charges. And when I can get _good_ bluefish, out of season, that really catches my attention and patronage. Now for the sad part: I can't recommend the eating in that highly, based solely (no pun inteneded) on our lunch. My date had a kind of cool kimchi "taco", and I had broiled scallops on greens, and they both suffered from the same problem: hot food on icy cold food does not make for a pleasant experience. The "taco" was chilly and if you take a bite into food that's supposed to be hot and you get a cold layer, followed by a tepid layer, followed by a sort of hot layer, it's a jarring experience that really detracts from being able to taste what's going on. My scallops were nicely braised, but the greens were very cold from the fridge, and as such were both underflavored and similarly jarring to the palate -- may I suggest actually wilting them slightly on the grill, to bring out the flavor? The seaweed salad also could have benefited from being closer to room temperature when served out of its little plastic cup. With the entree prices at lunch hovering in the mid-teens, I'm not sufficiently motivated to come back and try the fare again. There's no wine available, so it's hard to really treat this as haute as it would liek to be. We may give the evening take home dinner a whirl, though, since I like the concept. The seating is also awkward -- only two sort of "community" tables with somewhat uncomfortable seating. It's OK for a lobster roll shack, which I don't think is the aspiration of this place, which is otherwise decorate to appeal to the gourmand. I do wish this place well, as I want the fish counter to stay in business, and having a slightly high end place to grab something oceanic is a nice option at lunch. read more

Hands down the best and most fresh fish and seafood in the Capital District. I have been several times now and have even tried fish I normally don't buy and it has all been amazing! You know when they tell you that fish should not have any smell and everytme you bring home fish from the supermarkets it always does? Fin's fish is what they are talking about. Absolutely no smell! They offer a wide selection of filets and whole fish and they know the product very well ... where it comes from, how to cook it, etc ... and even offer a daily prepared fish dinner. Also, their squid rocks. Minus one point for no credit cards but apparently this is coming soon. Tuesdays and Fridays are when they get fresh stock. Closed Sunday and Monday. Never buy fish from the major supermarkets again. read more

Had a fantastic time working with Dora and Peter for catering our work event for more than 60 people. They worked with us to create a menu that was inclusive of vegetarian, gluten free diets and even included a couple of meat based seafood free items. Make time for the once​-a-month brunch. We enjoyed a very inspiring and motivating brunch on a recent rainy Sunday morning. Each section of the focussed menu demonstrates​ much care and thought, as does the preparation. For example, after enjoying Fin's crab cake, it is now clear that every crab cake I have previously eaten was either terribly diluted with filler, or borderline spoiled. I am finally getting around to writing this review. I have been buying fish from their Wilton store before it closed, and now in Guilderland. This location is a bit of a drive for me so I don't buy as often. This was a solid 4 star place but I think it has been going down. Fish selection has gotten smaller, and prices higher. They have great oysters, and I really like their cod. Specific to the cod - I pan fry thick cuts and their cod stays firm the longer allowing you to cook it better. it comes out more delicious. Their other fish I dont find to be much different from other high end stores. Note on shrimp. Maybe it was bad luck but they used to have good shrimp. There are only like 2-3 places in Albany to get good non-mushy shrimp. They charged a premium for this and I was ok with that. I dont feel it has been as good last few times. Better then frozen crap, but not the same. All being said I do recommend this place. I want them to survive. They are nice and have good prepared food. They have a new chef and I hope this will change my opinion. All their seafood can be used for sushi which we trust and make. read more

Great fish market. Good variety and I have yet to get something that wasn't totally fresh. It is not inexpensive however, and not the place to go if you are looking for a bargain. We've been meaning to stop in Fin for some time now, as we live only a couple of minutes away. I'm glad we finally did, because it is a great little shop and they serve up some pretty good lunch! I ordered a salmon & sweet potato burger on a croissant as well as a cup of New England clam chowder. The burger was really good, especially the curry aioli that came on the side, and the chowder was AMAZING. My husband enjoyed his fish tacos, but was less impressed. One of the tacos was overdressed with a very thin sauce, which ended up making a drippy mess. It wasn't the most spectacular place to eat lunch; they only have a couple of tables and not much of an atmosphere. We were intrigued by the variety of different things you could buy in the store, from rubs to soups to, of course, all kinds of fish. We will definitely return to purchase some things and try cooking them at home. read more

Had a terrible experience at Fin today, Christmas Eve. I pre-ordered because I knew they would be slammed. Pick ups for the pre-orders was horribly organized. Ended up waiting an hour and 45 minutes for an 11am pick up. While all the people who pre-ordered waited, other customers went to the counter, ordered, and paid in 15 minutes. They had 5 people at the counter, plus the owner at the register, but only 2 people serving the pre-order customers. The credit cards were being run out on the phone which ended up freezing when it was my turn so I had to go wait at the register to pay. The staff kept complaining about how customers were acting instead of doing something to improve the issues. All the while the owner, who was working the register, just ignored the chaos. Absolutely ridiculous!!!! I could say so much more, but I can't waste anymore of my time on this place. The food is good, but DEFINITELY NOT worth the hassle. read more

I visited Fin for the first time yesterday. I called ahead seeking white fish fillets for a meal I was preparing for 20 people. They were incredibly helpful and cut the fillets in 1/2 pound serving size pieces for me, so that I could more easily cook the fish on the stove. The haddock itself was incredibly fresh and everyone at my dinner enjoyed it. I also loved the selection of local and regional foods, as well as pasta from Flour City Pasta in Rochester. They have spices and dried beans and grains and a few vegetables. Although it is about 15 minutes outside of the city of Albany, in the town of Guilderland, Fin is well worth the drive and extra trip. I can't wait to return. read more

Stopped by the Fin booth at Troy Farmers' Market and had a Lobster Roll that was amazing. Daughter in law commented that they were better than any she's had in Boston. Large pieces of lobster, including whole claws, on toast with just the right amount of dressing. Absolutely delicious! read more

The only place I go for seafood even though it's a little bit of a drive for me. I love the salmon, and cod from the case and their tartar sauce and aioli is my favorite. I always stock up on shrimp from the freezer and usually buy some soup for when I get home. read more

I stopped at Fin at the recommendation we received recently when we ate at Athos Greek Restaurant. We are so grateful for that recommendation. We just ate a whole Bronzini; it was delicious. Finally, a fresh fish shop in Albany! The best in fresh, sustainable fish and seafood brought to you by a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I travel 11/2 hours every weekend to get the best fillets from their variety of fish. Its hard to choose a new specie of fish because the previous selection I brought home was SO good I wind up buying it again! Their take home ready-to-cook suppers are fantastic and delicious and easy to cook! Two tips - One - If going on the weekend (and you don't call ahead to reserve) get there early for the best selection because they often sell-out. Two -Never be afraid to ask questions! The shrimp and fish are very fresh and of good quality. However, the hot lobster roll was a disappointment. I had very little lobster on my roll and I did not like the vinegar on it which also made the roll really soggy. I didn't taste any butter on it whatsoever. Very bland in taste. read more

My wife and I shop at fin in Guilderland nearly every week. We usually get two nights worth of stuff, one night invariably salmon, and the other whatever catch of the week looks good. The quality and freshness of the fish is invariably excellent, but as other reviews note there is a bit of premium price. But the quality is there to warrant it. The staff are friendly and seem to be better trained and knowledgeable than when the shop first opened. I really highly recommend the place. You will not find better fish in the Capital District. Here is the part, though, where I say that my wife and I do have one major complaint ... The one - and really only - continuing issue that my wife and I have with fin is that the do not scale their fish properly. We invariably have to finish the de-scaling at home. It is not a fun job to do when you are trying to make a quick week-night din din, and not what you expect when you are (sometimes at least) paying nearly $20/pound for product. I have mentioned the deficient de-scaling issue to the fin staff on numerous occasions and have been greeted with blank stares or a "would you like me to take the skin off?" question. The skin, at least for something like salmon, is one of the tastiest and most nutritious parts! Why would I want it removed? I want the skin on and the scales off. Skin on, scales off. Skin on, scales off. It's not complicated, or at least it shouldn't be for a self-described "fishmonger." Sorry to be monomaniacal on this point but it drives my wife and I crazy how such an otherwise excellent operation can be so deficient on a basic point of quality-control. Honestly, every time we open the wrapping paper on a piece of fish we hope against hope that it will be properly scaled, and it is invariably not. It turns what should be a moment of food glory in to a moment of defeated deflation and resignation to the dirty and un-fun job of de-scaling. I am surprised I do not see others complaining, as I have certainly purchased enough fin product to know that I am dealing with a trend and not a fluke (fishy pun). The fish counter at the Honest Weight co-op properly scales their fish. It can be done, and the Mediterranean blood in my veins demands no less. SO, the bottom line is that I highly recommend fin, but on the caveat that you may have to do some de-scaling yourself. Which is maddening. read more

It's a long ways from RED'S EATS in Wiscasset (my favorite lobster roll), but FIN is good and the best we have. I do not know who Laurence is who gave a poor recommendation, but he might want to try again. fin's is the BEST EVER. I have not bought one piece of seafood in a grocery store since they opened. They are knowledgeable; they are doing the right thing by shopping sustainable fish, and they truly care about providing GREAT, FRESH fish. They also support other local folks by providing free range eggs, local beef/pork, and artisan breads. What is not to LOVE about fins? This is my favorite store. read more

I get the weekly newsletter and have been dying to try this place. I finally went in one night after a long day of work to get take-out. The person at the counter seemed to not know very much (no problem, maybe new), but did offer to ask someone about my questions, although not very happily even after I apologized for her needing to go ask in the back. The counter person went literally a few steps away to the person cooking to ask my question, and the person cooking looked up, saw me watching, and answered with an attitude. I was pretty annoyed from there as the newsletter makes it sound like such a happy, helping place, and I asked just a basic question about the salmon, but then they also forgot one of my orders (thankfully I checked the bag before I left) and gave me something with my item that I asked to not have. I thought if the meal was absolutely exceptional I could forgive all this, but honestly it was just decent. Something I would eat again, but with the service I received, definitely would not go out of my way to go back. It was, in my opinion, a disappointing experience. read more

After receiving a gift certificate for Christmas, we finally got to Fin to try it out. Their Lobster Roll was a different twist on the traditional Lobster Salad type sandwich and was enjoyed by my wife. I had the Fish and Chips. The fish was done perfectly, the batter light and tasty, and even though they serve regular fresh French Fries, they arrived with a light seasoning that didn't even require ketchup. Excellent Job!! Now on to the appetizers. We shared the Garlicky Shrimp and the Broiled Scallops which both were served with a bed of Spring Mix, and the shrimp also had some wild rice which was great with the extra garlic butter that dripped off the shrimp. I really couldn't stop talking to the staff about how good it was. Although it was a little on the pricey side, we definitely don't mind paying extra for food when it is done like this. I have been a customer since seeing them at farmers markets and I have enjoyed the quality of the product I find at fin. The staff at fin is always friendly and helpful. Love Chef Katie and her creative sauces and side dish items. Kristen is always there with a smile when i visit. But my less than stellar review is completely based on my encounters with the owner, she is far less than friendly and often makes me feel like I am not worthy of her time when I ask a question or even just say hello. I spend a lot of my money shopping local and will continue to do so but I have to say it will not be at fin very often. I am not expecting a red carpet but please being friendly and polite is part of being a good business owner especially when you are a small business that needs good word of mouth to survive. I receive the newsletter and read their FB posts and often find that the snarky nature of them is beyond demeaning to the people that read them. But apparently the elitist that writes them thinks she is above her customer base. My recommendation is save yourself the extra money and shop Whole Foods... although a large chain they are much nicer to their customers! read more

I was excited when learning that there would be a fishmonger opening at Star Plaza and my experiences with the Fin have been positive until yesterday, Feb. 1, the day before Super Bowl Sunday. What I am about to relate about Fin fish is not a "fishy story", or is it? You decide. Wanting to be sure I did not disappoint my guests or me for the Super Bowl, I ordered, in person, a Shrimp Platter for $20.00 a week before the well known event. The clerk entered my name, phone number, "Shrimp Platter" and "Sat. - 3 PM" in the notebook because I said that is when I would pick up the order. When I arrived at the Fin yesterday at 3 PM the same clerk who took my order said they did not have the item and that "someone" had come in the store earlier and bought the platter. I was told there was no name on the platter at which point the clerk checked the notebook and, in her handwriting, saw my order that she had entered herself a week earlier. She even acknowledged remembering me placing the order with her. Given a moment to collect her thoughts, she told me that the owners were not there and there was no more shrimp. Then the clerk remembered there was some Carolina shrimp in the display cabinet. The second clerk counted 23 of them, which would be enough for my guests, and we agreed on a price of $10.00. After apologies and having reached a compromise, I left with the shrimp. When I place orders with the Fin in the future, I will call a day ahead to confirm that we are all on the same "fishing boat." read more
