Disorganized, Site does not reflect stock, Pick ups are a nightmare, calls backs are few. They hold on to your order for 3 days you hope to get will call that day or get a different similar item. Being in the Burbank area makes for picking up gear very convenient, especially in a pinch. Very interaction I've had with an employee has been pleasant and educational, especially being a newer filmmaker. I'm even more excited now that they will be open on Saturdays! I am a fan of this business, just wish there were more than one location. We drove up from Anaheim to Burbank (which is a nightmare). If you have been to Studio Depot, Film Tools is pretty much the same, except they don't sell Mole products, & is a bit of a smaller store. We were looking at a certain sized pelican case, but they were out of stock. I was surprised at how low they were for their pelican cases....frustrating because those can be hard to come by! The staff is always friendly, but that's what you get for the film industry. read more

Been a customer with them since the beginning on Olive Avenue. I ended up with left over media after a shoot, and returned them still in original packaging. They charged me a 20% 'fee' to return them!! They made no mention of this when I purchased the cards and asked them if I could return what was unused. They assured me as long as it was unopened it would be OK. Maybe a small amount to cover the credit card charges is understandable but 20 % is ridiculous. Fantastic Customer Service from Mary and the technical person whose name I unfortunately do not recall. At 3PM on a Friday, I called to order rough spun (which I know nothing about) for a Saturday delivery. I needed to hand off to crew flying Saturday PM. Mary connected a tech person on the call that quickly determined which product was needed for the application. The material was pulled, packed and dropped at a Fed Ex office. I work for a custom shop and often have to source material last minute. My under stress phone calls are frequently met with abrupt less than helpful responses. This was real customer service, Mary acted with urgency and was pleasant throughout. Happy that good customer service still exists. Much appreciation to Mary and Team! read more

Update: Filmtools reached out and was able to find a solution for a comparable pieces of equipment. They worked diligently to make sure the equipment arrived in time for my shoot. I order specialty clamps that was "in stock" and then I received an email afterwards that it would be 2-5 business days before they would ship. After 5 business days of waiting, mind you this was for a production I had coming up, they told me there was no ETA on shipping. Therefore, I had to pay overnight from B&H and rig together a less than ideal situation. In my eyes "in stock" is false advertising. read more

I shopped recently here for some haze sprays for a shoot. I knew they'd have them in the store (I checked on line before). They did have them and I was impressed by the customer service. I couldn't find them right away, but once I asked somebody working behind the counter, he came with us, showed us where they were, answered all of our questions, was nice, polite, helpful, checked us out fast. Couldn't be better, we were in and out fast. Big parking lot behind the store and street parking. Great resource for film shoots, in particular for camera, grip and electric departments. read more

If you ever try to buy camera accessories here, get ready for an unpleasant experience. They have a special vault-like show room locked at all times with camera gear. I am amazed that this place considers itself a business that supports filmmakers. I had a simple order of a roll of ND .6 window gel that I needed for a shoot last week and they ended up sending me a .3 instead. A minor inconvenience, a pure warehouse selection mistake I understand; but the story gets better. I called them and was told I would receive the RMA number via email so that I could return the item for its proper replacement. I did not get said email by the next day and decided to call again. Customer service representative Jere Cooper was the person I spoke with about the mishap, and the following happened: She apologized for the error and asked me which method of return shipment I would be willing to pay for. I proceeded to explain how I had already paid the extra $50 for UPS Next Day Air, as my filming was time sensitive, and that I thought it was not fair to be double charged for the mistake of Filmtools; especially seeing how my production had to be cancelled because of their error on such a simple order. But wait, it gets better. I bit the bullet, and purchased and assured the correct item, and footed the bill for the shipping of the wrong item back to Burbank. Everything was cool. Then today I receive my replacement roll and it is the exact same thing I returned to them. Incorrect item. Correct on the shipping order, correct over the phone with double verification, correct on my electronic communication, but again, I get something I didn't order. I got the exact same thing I struggled to return. Filmtools doesn't care about you or your production. They will treat you like their mistakes were yours. And currently I am out $400 dollars for one $140 item that they probably move fairly often, and I don't expect to be reimbursed for any of my trouble. read more

My company spends well into six figures a year on production equipment, expendables, and accessories. We're based in South Florida so we can't just run down the street to pick up gear. Miguel is more than a sales rep for us, he's our equipment concierge. I can call him and tell him what we need and when we need it. He advises us on our best options and takes it from there. We never worry about showing up to a shoot empty handed or missing a deadline because we really are in the best hands. Removed Content: I recently TRIED to do a rental here. Mostly small grip items, but we did need a car mount as well. I placed my order on a Friday and by Tuesday the following week I'd heard nothing regarding the order. This is now three days before principal photography starts. We call, they tell us they're starting on the order. We don't hear anything from them again. We call Thursday because we're doing a Friday pickup with shooting starting Friday night, and they said, "Sorry, we don't have what you need so we're going to refer you to another rental house." We only got this information by calling them. They did not call to tell us they didn't have the equipment to meet our needs. So, we were left scrambling to piece together a new rental, from multiple locations, causing additional issues with other gear pickups. This was a small order, and maybe that makes me low priority, but all this served to show was that when I have larger orders in the future, I will not be taking my business here for fear I'd end up gearless again the DAY BEFORE my principal photography starts. Don't trust these guys. Their customer service is exceptional only in how bad it is. read more

I went in today with a particular lighting problem and was assisted by Paul. He was absolutely wonderful - showed me how to deal with it and what I needed to buy, and the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because they have been out of stock on what I needed a few times including today. I placed an order for store-pick up back in early August. A few days later, when it was supposed to be ready, I receive an email notifying me that my order wasn't in stock and will be on back-order for 3-7 days and to contact the shipping department if i had any concerns. After hearing or receiving no communication from filmtools for a straight 2-3 weeks, I did call. I called nearly every other day for the better half of a couple weeks and not once did anyone pick up or even have an answering machine available for me to leave a message. I eventually just gave up and forgot about it, when over 2 months later in late October, I receive an email telling me that my order is ready for pick up. Thats it. No phonecall, email, or even a "sorry for the inconvenience." At this point, however, I had already moved away and am no longer anywhere close to the store They did, however, remember to charge my account. read more

Their prices are astronomically high. They have a good selection of stuff, but like many of these reviews say: unless you're in a pinch, you can find them for considerably cheaper elsewhere. Also, pray you don't need to get any answers or make an order on the phone. It's impossible to get anyone on, you leave message after message and nobody gets back. Based on Filmtool's promise that online orders placed before noon PDT would ship same day, I placed an order for materials needed for a upcoming shoot. The order was placed on Thursday 8/28/2014 at 9:14 AM PDT according to Filmtool's own order confirmation that arrived promptly via email. Alas, the order did not ship on the 28th as promised and I have received no word on the status of the order as of the date I write (9/3/14). I have ordered from Filmtools before, several times in fact, and have been pleased. Not this time because it looks like I'll have to go elsewhere in a hurry to meet my obligations. I note that a lot of items are listed as out of stock on the website, and noting other posts on recent troubles I have to wonder if the troubles persist. read more

I've always loved this store. I mean yeah the prices can be high, but at the same time, I've had them SAVE me money on different things from Rode Lavs to Green Screens, not to mention I've even had them price match from time to time. They've literally got 85%ish of what I usually need to buy when gearing up to produce a new film project, so it's usually my go to when necessary. I definitely recommend FilmTools and say that if you need to shoot something and need to find something quickly and don't mind if the price is say...$20 or so higher from time to time, it's a good spot to shop for your pre, production, and post production needs. They have a lot of what you need if you work in the film industry: tools, expendables, bags, cables, etc. The store layout makes browsing very easy, and the website is a great resource, too. They also offer their own line of high quality equipment carts. Their prices are steep compared to online retailers such as B&H, but they do offer 3.5% production sales tax tied to your credit card, so you get the deal every time you shop. read more

Mediocre prices, although that's pretty typical for local film stores. The big problem is the website and how they operate it. When an item says "Usually ships within 3-4 days", that actually means it is out of stock and that you shouldn't order. If various bits of your order are expected to come back into stock at different times you have to either wait for the last item, or have your entire order cancelled so that you can re-order. read more

I've been in and out of Filmtools a few times for small items for my grip back, but recently I needed a specific Pelican case that would fit my 27" iMac. I arrived at Filmtools where they ended up not having what I needed, but they certainly worked their hardest checking the dimensions of all of the pelican cases in stock to try to get me something that would fit. I really appreciated their dedication, but unfortunately it just wasn't meant to be. I do have to admit - I am miffed that they are closed on the weekends. I'd understand if it was in a location like Oklahoma, but I just feel like when you are located in Los Angeles, the hub of filmmaking, you kind of have to be open 7 days a week. We all know emergencies happen on set (I know I've had my fair share), so I just can't wrap my head around being closed on weekends. Maybe have an 8am-2pm shift with only 2 employees? read more

I usually order from B&H because I'm closer to NYC. These guys were awesome at handling a return.They were polite over the phone taking my order, and they even sent out a free replacement and postage to cover the returned item. I'd definitely order from these guys again. Note: shipping is very expensive for small items. I don't know of a retail store to buy Pancro lens cleaner on the east coast. I ordered the cleaner/tissues and ship was still $13.50 for ups ground..bummer. read more
