Filmtools in Burbank is an absolute dream for filmmakers. It is one of those places where you walk in and instantly feel like a kid in a candy store. Shelves packed with grip, camera, and expendables, carts and cases everywhere, and staff who actually know what they are talking about and are happy to help you problem solve your build or your shoot. Their gear selection is incredible, whether you are a student, indie filmmaker, or working on a bigger show. You can walk in with a half formed idea of what you need and walk out with a fully dialed in kit. One of the coolest things is that they have an ARRI Alexa 35 setup on the floor that you can actually get hands on with. Being able to play with the camera in person, test lenses, and feel out a build before committing is priceless. This place somehow feels super pretentious and I've never heard good things, but today I experienced it first hand. I called to simply check the inventory of a backdrop I was looking for (it was on their website but I wasn't sure if I could get it in person). I was put on hold for over 20 minutes and when I was finally spoken to, I get a "sorry about that wait this is Autumn (I think this was the name) how can I help you?" I begin to explain what I'm looking for and I get interrupted by something I did not understand. I said "I'm sorry?" Silence. I say, "are you there?" And I get a muffled conversation proceeded by a "No no... oh hell no." And I was hung up on. I call again and the same voice puts me on hold again. After five minutes I was like, nah screw that. Went to Hollywood Expendables and it was a way better experience and got me what I needed. Idk why I got hung up on, but it was definitely not worth it. read more

This place used to be excellent. As an LA based producer, I always try and buy local but they have made it so hard. We tried calling four different times and we were left on hold over 20 minutes each time before we gave up. We ended up setting up a pro account with the studio group at B&H in NYC, one call is all it took -- they have been incredible. Most items we receive within a day or two. We bought an Alexa 35 XTreme, Leitz lenses and tons of accessories, grip equipment, Arri lights and two new Macs, with more to come. I stop by Filmtools every time I'm in Burbank, even if I don't need anything. For anyone who works crew in film, TV, or video - it's like Toys "R" Us. I bought my setwear gloves there, my mini follow focus, C-stands, slates, dimmers, clamps and batteries of all manners. They've got everything a crew person needs. Their staff is knowledgeable enough, although most people who go there know exactly what they're looking for and everything about it beforehand so a high degree of expertise isn't totally necessary for a good experience. I wish they got better camera allocation from time to time, they've been out of stock on the Sony FX6 for quite a while now, but I suppose that's not something they can control. And I wish their prices one expendables were a little bit lower. I just wish there was a Filmtools on the west side! read more

Every time I give this place a chance it reminds me I'm just a wallet with legs & my questions are stupid compared to the rich people right next to me. Had a simple question for a camera guy who just sneered at me for trying to find something in store, only to show me more expensive options, doubling gear I don't need! It's a fucking racket. The prices on some simple film gear are astronomical. Bad vibes all around. Don't look on the website, they'll list something & then tell you it doesn't exist, only will add to your suffering & confusion. Any where else is better. Worst retail experience I've had in a while. Was looking for a smaller place than the typical big name retailers in the photo/video equipment industry. Bought something, but ended up needing to return it prior to using it, within the 30 day window. It's in perfect, like new condition. They agreed it looked new enough to re-sell (they even required I send in photos, which I was happy to do, albeit it a somewhat unusual request). They still insisted on charging a 20% restocking fee. When pressed, they stated it was company policy. I've purchased photo and video equipment at many places and needed to return something to several and never had a restocking fee apply, even though those other site's policies were that they reserved the right to charge a restocking fee. Terrible customer service - I won't be back and would recommend shopping elsewhere. Otherwise, you'll be bitten by potential 20% losses if something doesn't work out. read more

Absolutely non existent customer service. I'm left feeling completely swindled. I ordered something from their website that I could get any number of places, including Amazon. I only ordered from them because the listing said that if I ordered within a couple hours that it would ship the same day. The label was created the same day but the item didn't actually ship until 5 days later. After the second day I attempted to call them, left a message....no response. Since it was something I needed fairly quickly I emailed them in an attempt to cancel the order so I could buy it somewhere else...no response. 5 days later after still not hearing from them I noticed the tracking says that it finally shipped even though I asked them to cancel the order days before it actually shipped. Their online customer service is pretty useless, and they often have very old stock of batteries. When I pointed out that the batteries I had received from them were defective, the only reply was "you had only 30 days for an exchange" (OK, I didn't check them when I received them and it was now 60 days since I had purchased). But when I suggested that they check their stock to make sure that they didn't do the same thing to other customers, the response was "All of our stock is currently in working order in proper storage." Nice to know that they we happy to send me the old stock. Definitely recommend against buying batteries from here as you never know the condition they'll be in. Also had issues in the past with gaff tape having the edges banged up but I put that off to chance. Their shipping is slow. Two stars because they carry a lot of interesting stuff, and going there in real life would let you check the product before you buy it. read more

When I say this place is Disneyland for filmmakers, it's an insult to Filmtools. Because it is heaven. I hate shopping, it is the bane of my existence. A wretched, stressful, and miserable activity, I can never leave any store soon enough. The guy that taps his foot behind you while you talk to the cashier, me letting out audible sighs as you fumble your debit card in the card reader, that's me. I just hung out at Filmtools in complete enjoyment for over an hour as I was waited on hand and foot by a knowledgeable and caring staff that figured out all of my technical problems without making me feel like a total idiot, which I am 45% of the time. Zach literally spent 30 minutes hunting down the exact parts I need for an extremely specific situation, and the parts he found me worked out perfectly after today's test. John in the sound department found me the cable I needed and even showed me on a demo camera how it would connect. Zach, John, and another fella who I don't think I got his name(the dude with the black nails) were the most helpful people at a store I've ever met. They saved my life on this project. They're my best friends, they're coming to my wedding, might named my first child Zachjohn Blacknails. Anyways, I'm a little drunk, but this is the finest business I've ever been too. If they had Amazon's return policy they'd put Bezos out of business, but besides that it's the best spot for a filmmaker I've been to in California. Love you mucho. read more

Don't order through Filmtools if you need your gear in a reasonable time frame. It's been over a month and I'm still waiting on a family of apple boxes and 2 4x4 floppies. I understand lights being back ordered but others I know ordered through other sellers and got all of their gear much faster. The last email I received I was told that there wasn't even an expected date of arriving - they would give me an ETA but they didn't know when. Completely unreliable and disappointing. I should've went elsewhere but now I know better. I'd cancel the rest of the order but there's a 20% "restocking" fee. They do this so they can take as long as they want with orders and the orderer won't cancel because of the fee. Total BS read more

Cool store but they don't care about customers. They just want money. I needed a vmount and they said the only thing they had is going to cost me 200. I looked around and found another adjustable vmount from small rig for 65. He told me it only works with lights so i made him try it. It worked with all the batteries.
