You should absolutely avoid using this and any other data recovery company if possible - Save your…read moredata, test your backups, make sure you have more than one copy of things that are irreplaceable. Paying to get data recovered is an awful situation. It's sort of like going to a body shop after a traffic collision. In a perfect world, this would NEVER happen. Hard drives would last a long time, and everybody would always backup all their important data. But it's not a perfect world - Things go wrong, and sometimes important data needs to be recovered. When I found myself in this situation, I brought my hard drive to DataTech labs. The Sunnyvale location is a drop-off point for their San Jose office. This provides an added level of convenience if you live/work in the Sunnyvale area. Although their SJ location is conveniently located down the street from SJC, driving there can be time consuming from the Sunnyvale/Mountain View area. DataTech handled transporting the drive to San Jose and sent me an email notification once the drive had arrived safely. I spoke with a data recovery engineer after the drive had been received. I was struck by the depth of the engineer's knowledge, which put me at ease in terms of the prognosis for my data. Within a day or two, I heard from an account manager who provided me with a time and cost estimate. My experience with DataTech Labs employees was all positive: Everybody was professional and easy to work with. The cost for my data recovery was not cheap - but it was appropriate given the situation. I hope to never need a data recovery service again. However if I do, I will give my business to DataTech. I recommend you do the same. And if you do not yet need data recovery, then PLEASE do yourself a favor: Head over to http://backblaze.com NOW. Invest $5/month in making sure your data doesn't vanish in the first place.

This company lost my sim card after I specifically went to the store in sunnyvale and we looked at…read morethe sim card as I wanted to get data off of it. they took this phone and sim card as well as three other items that they were not able to get the data from. They claim that the data they retrieved was from the phone not the sim card However, I was told that this is impossible as the phone itself was damaged and that the limited data they did get had to have come form the sim card only. Extracting data from the sim card only would have been under one hundred dollars. they charged me 400+. They deny ever having had my sim card and the manager looked into to this superficially by making a 1 min call to his store in sunnyvale. He was rude unapologetic and partronizing to say the least. No responsibility was taken and they have not shown to be that they dd get the data from the phone itself. Lastly, they had three other items that they were not successful in obtaining data from and took several weeks to get the limited data from the aforementioned item. On top of that they sent the items back and it took over a week to get them back, I am involved in a legal case and all of this is times sensitive and they claim that a they never had my sim card and two that there is no data on it of importance. This card has clients phone numbers and other information important to this case.

These folks are truly incredible. Some background: over a decade ago, I spent a several years…read morerepairing Macs at the Genius Bar, before moving onto other roles within the company (and eventually after many years leaving). Flash forward to now: my work MacBook Pro suddenly completely dead. No power, not charging, and all USB-C ports showing only drawing 5v. I did my own work down, attempting to isolate to bare minimum components in order to get it to boot. I've worked on enough of these machines to suspect liquid damage even though there hadn't been any spills or anything, and I pulled the logic board and did a close visual inspection looking for blown MOSFETs or any real sign of dried liquid. Found nothing, and I was a little disappointed that my old skills were failing me. Critically, I needed data on the machine that had not yet been backed up. (Dumb.) Unlike back in the day, there's no removable flash storage chip that you can mount in an enclosure and get back on data. In fact, the data itself is now encrypted against the security chip on the machine, so really the only option is to get the machine booting again, or spend $2000-$5000 on forensic data recovery (and even then with the encryption, I wasn't confident if that was a viable option anymore). I knew that if I brought the machine to Apple, they would try very few things to get the machine up and booting with my data intact before replacing components, and thus taking my data with it. I also knew I was probably looking at $1500-$1800 in logic board part cost. I bring it to Alex and crew at MacFixed. Alex called me within 24h and filled me in on his initial diagnosis, which told me that I wasn't missing anything silly and that the issue was way deeper than anything I could address. Approved the repair and he went to work. Pricing was an incredibly good deal, somebody this skilled deserves to be paid for their time, and with the amount of time debugging that this kind of issue would require, I got out the door for $550 which is an absolute steal. I mentioned the alternative repair options and their prices, and hopefully that puts that cost in perspective. Well, Alex solved it, after spending an entire weekend on the thing. He told me he eventually noticed something just slightly off on a surface mount component's pad, just a slight shift in coloring, and desoldered it on speculation to finally find the issue. Some truly microscopic amount of liquid managed to wedge itself under the chip and short out the entire machine. He replaced the chip, revived my machine, and even maintained a backup for me while I went home to get a second copy for redundancy created. He said he saved the chip to show me, and when I picked up my machine I couldn't believe how small it truly was. Unbelievable. Attaching photos to this review. I'll come to ya'll again in a heartbeat and sharing positive word of mouth every chance I get. Thank you again guys.

A little tricky to find. They are in an office park in between Central Pkwy & Scott Blvd. Easier to…read moreaccess from Central (if coming from east) and Scott Blvd (if coming from west). Due to COVID, they have a very specific protocol and I must say, it could be a bit clearer, it can be fairly convoluted which order you do things in. Best to make an appt through Apple Support (if you have an Apple device) as the place to start. (They do NOT take walk-ins at present, NOR do you have ANY contact with a human for drop-off & pickup of your device) Then, follow all the instructions in the emails they send you (click the link to start a work ticket, etc.) If you, like me, neglect to read the email they send and start a work ticket at home, they have an iPad there, where you will create one, when you come at your appointment time. Either way, they will then give you the number of a locker. Inside the locker is a lock. Place your device inside the locker and lock it with the lock provided and you're done. Don't forget to remove any cases, as they won't return them. As I said earlier, you won't be able to speak to or see anyone. They will contact you later with a diagnosis and ask if you want to proceed. You have to keep monitoring your email waiting for the diagnosis and then waiting for the email telling you your device is ready and then the email with the link to pay and the email that tells you which locker your fixed device will be in and the lock code is. It's a lot of waiting for an email. Honestly, it's a huge pain in the ass, but on the upside, they are an authorized Apple repair place so you have peace-of-mind they know what they are doing and their prices are very reasonable. I wouldn't say they are "fast" (5 hours to replace iPhone battery) but probably fastER than dealing with the lines & appointment schedule of the Apple store.
