Hoyra - Borscht with pork

Had Winterlicious dinner on Sunday and the restaurant was fully booked -- the whole team seemed…read moreextremely busy. I really enjoyed the cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The Pork Borscht was hearty and comforting, and I loved the traditional pampushky bread. The appetizer portion was very generous. The Adjarian Khachapuri was beautifully presented. The egg and cheese combination tasted delicious, but unfortunately the dough was slightly undercooked. It felt like the kitchen may have been overwhelmed by how busy service was. For dessert, I ordered the Sour Cherry Varenyky -- dumplings filled with sour cherry and served with sour cream. This dessert didn't quite work for me. I can imagine it being nostalgic for those who grew up with it, but the filling lacked sweetness and the addition of sour cream made it taste even more tart. That said, I usually enjoy sour flavours, so this one just didn't land for my personal taste. I tried honey cake thst my friend ordered and I was not disappointed though. I would like to return and give this restaurant another try, as the extremely busy service may have affected both food execution and overall service quality.

This restaurant was Ukrainian style, good location in Downtown Toronto. Their website was updated to reflect new dishes and menu. We booked a reservation at 11:30am on Saturday, and they only allowed to stay for 2 hours (the waitress told us we could stay until 1:30pm when we arrived around 11:45). The lunch winterlicious included 1 of 3 Appetizers, 1 of 3 mains, 1 of 3 desserts. We got a Pork soup (Borscht), deep fried chicken (Schnitzel), and honey cake with customized caramel walnuts. We also ordered Deruny Benedict with Smoke Salmon. The soup was coming with some bread and sour cream, but a bit salty for us. As an appetizer, it was ok. The Benedict with Smoke Salmon, somehow the smoke salmon was fishy that the pancake at the bottom was also fishy. Salad within the Benedict and the sauce were great. The fried chicken was no sauce, it was a bit dry for me. At last, the honey cake came in the middle of our meal, too early. There was walnut on it, we didn't realize until see it, my little one has allergy with nuts, we didn't ask at the beginning. About their service, when we just arrived, she mentioned 2 hours limit for the dining period. I feel like she doesn't want us to stay, because we have a kid that we might not able to finish our lunch in 2 hours, or we might occupy the table too long. As first time comer, she didn't ask if we have any allergies. Lucky that we caught it. We finished within 50mins, still have enough time to go washroom and pay the bill. But we have to watch the time. Maybe we would like to relax a bit more next time.

It was our first time at the Golden Pheasant and have to say that we were impressed with the food…read more But what's more impressive, was the huge portion of their plates. The schnitzel that I ordered (Wiener Schnitzel) was enough to feed 3 people. Mine was with the potato salad that you pay an extra $2 (worth it in my opinion) or you could get it with rice and fries. It also comes with a salad. We also ordered the Potato Dumplings (Halusky) which brought memories of my trip to Slovakia a while ago. We also ordered some Pillsners Urkell to wash down our food. The schnitzel is a bit on the salty side so the Halusky, potato salad and salad provides a nice balance. The food took a very long time to arrive so that's something to be aware of. I'm not sure if it was a one off or if it's a regular occurrence. The food was worth the wait though. My advice will be to come as soon as they are open. The decor needs improvement but you are not coming here for the ambience. The food prices might seems expensive but when you compare it with the amount of food that you get, it's really not. There's parking at the back and the restaurant it's a bit lax about their opening time which is 5pm. We arrived at 5pm but needed to knock so they could open for us. It's in the same block as Dairy Cream so it was convenient for us. We did not finish our food as we were saving room for the ice cream. It's worth a visit if you are fan of schnitzels!

Idemo!! If you're around the Bloor & Islington area and want some hearty Balkan fare, please stop…read moreby here! Service/Staff is super friendly and attentive! Very spacious for group dining, couples or solo! I definitely wanted to try the Shopska salad and the Cevapi (chevapi) plate so that's what I ordered and it did not disappoint!! A must-order is the bread called lepinja (lepin-ya). It comes with a fresh cheese called kajmak (k-eye-mak) The cevapi plate comes with your choice of 3 sides - coleslaw with oil/vinegar, potatoes, diced raw onions, or baked beans. Everything was fantastic. The cevapi were perfectly done. Lepinja and kajmak were amazing. Kajmak is home-made there, and you can buy some to go! Shopska salad features cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and green peppers in an oil/vinegar dressing with a mountain of shredded feta on top!!! Soooo good!!

We ordered lepinja sa kajmakom, which was a homestyle bread with cream cheese. This was the star dish of the night omg, priced at $5 for 4 pieces it instantly set the meal in the right direction! We then got the shopska salad which was a salad with tomato, cucumber, onion, green pepper, and feta. Salad was mid, but it was nice to have greens as our main was the mesano meso, a grilled meat platter for 4. This platter was so filling and had different varieties of meats. The best meat in this selection was the sausage, I unfortunately found everything else a little lacklustre. Service was great throughout the night, ambiance was nothing super special. Verdict: come for the homestyle bread!! Still thinking about it haha

Part of a longer review…read more.. Some restaurants open with bravado -- neon signage, polished branding, a rehearsed backstory. Maven, on Harbord Street, does the opposite. It carries itself with quiet confidence. Chef Shauna Godfrey, a Culinary Institute of America graduate who trained at Michelin-starred Atera in New York before returning to Toronto to lead the kitchen at Momofuku Kōjin, built Maven as an extension of home. Inspired by her Ashkenazi grandmother, Bubby Rose, she channels memory into modernity. Even its name, Yiddish for "expert," captures both culinary authority and familial affection. The dining room's exposed brick and denim-blue banquettes lend it a contemporary polish, but heirloom touches ground it: portraits of family members watching over the space, and the sense that every detail has been chosen with care. The result is a room that hums with the ease of a neighborhood spot yet carries the refinement of a destination.

We went for a 5pm reservation and it filled up rather quickly. The host and all the servers were really wonderful and attentive. For a group of 3 they recommended 4 small plates and 2 large ones all to share. Something nice is that they have complimentary sparkling water which I enjoyed. We ordered the challah - both the butter and pâté versions - the BBQ salami, crispy potatoes, the turnips, the endive salad, and the chicken schnitzel. They brought out the bread and salami first as well as complimentary house-made coleslaw which was crispy, light, and added a perfect vinegary bite. The challah was warm and airy. I didn't try the butter but I thought the pâté was very nice and smooth. The BBQ salami was incredible!! The mustard was a nice compliment with the apricot flavour as well. The turnips, salad, and potatoes came next, followed quickly by the chicken. I loved everything. The pear in the salad was an unexpected highlight. The chicken was the standout for sure. I absolutely loved it. For dessert we tried the cheesecake which was nice, a good balance of tang and mild sweetness. The bathrooms are also nice with the little WC signs, the good paper towel, and the recipes in addition to other art prints on the walls. I don't normally comment on the washrooms, but these were cute. Overall, everything we ate was wonderful and the service was great! It came out to about $170 for us but we ordered the perfect amount. It was a bit pricey but I really enjoyed everything. I would highly recommend Maven.
