You cannot go wrong with Fick's. I had a HVAC company come in & told me that I needed a new HVAC. said compressor needed replaced, etc. Said it would cost the same to replace. (I am a female landlord & he was just trying to sell me a new unit) I then reached out to FICK'S & turns out it just needed new a panel & fix a wire that was not connected securely. I am a landlord in the Baltimore County area. They have been other properties of mine & have always been professional. Absolute nightmare of situation. Got assigned Ficks through our home warranty program. Absolute nightmare of a company. Sent a tech out (looked 15 years old) and he claimed we had a freeon leak, which he charged us $500 to fix and claim he patched it. 2 days later our AC stopped working again, took 3 weeks to get them back and now he claims we need a new part. He tells us in the home we just need the part ordered and the Freeon Leak held fine. After waiting for TWO weeks then never even sent the claim to our insurance company, they also ADDED ANOTHER $500 FREEON leak to the bill even though we paid it 3 weeks prior. Gets better. We call the company and the front desk girl (most of the time doesn't answer). So, we had to call on a different number once they knew we caught on to their scam and she eventually answered. I asked her why we didn't get a write up on what the situation was after the 2nd diagnostic? HER RESPONSE " THE TECHNICIAN HAS A BROKEN HAND AND CAN'T WRITE." I watched this kid work on our unit and his hands were fine, BUT if they werent, the openly admitted to sending a repair man out to fix an issue with a BROKEN HAND. I had the unfortunate experience of having Fick's assigned by my home warranty company to assess and repair my air conditioner . My husband has a background in HVAC therefore we are lucky to be knowledgeable of the work that needed to be completed and would've been scammed by this company as I'm pretty sure many already have been. The first concern occurred when the technician tested the system and reported different information than what the gauges showed. As I mentioned, my husband has a background in HVAC therefore, he understood how to read the gauges. When given cleary incorrect information, he questioned the technician on the age and accuracy of the gauges and asked if he'd had issues with them recently. When the technician confirmed they were in working order, we knew we were in trouble. As soon as they left, we contacted the Home Warranty company and requested a new contractor. The Home Warranty company required us to get a further assessment from Fick's before we were able to utilize another contractor . Following their next assessment where they determined there was a leak and charged the Home Warranty company for a leak test. Fick's then reported that we needed a new air handler (covered by the Warranty company) and "an electrical and drain line modification to the system" was required which would cost us $1,800 as it isn't covered . When contacting the Home Warranty company and questioning what, specifically, needed to be modified in each system, as a replacment of the air handler did not require this, we were instructed by the Home Warranty company to contact Fick's directly. At this point, the second major issue occurred. We contacted Fick's and inquired about what modifications needed to be made. We were directed to an office manager who was not technical and was unable to answer our questions . When asking to speak to the technician who was technically knowledgeable and therefore able to answer the questions, we were told that was not possible. Understandable. Maybe he was out on appointments. We then asked to speak to the owner or a manager who was technically knowledgeable however we were told that he would not have time to speak to us. The office manager then reported that she gets this question often (so they run this scam often) and that she has been instructed by the owner that whenever this question came up to say "you have to pay whatever the home warranty will not cover." To those unaware, generally modifications to the electrical system and drain line are not a typical service associated with replacing an air handler and definitely not necessary in our case therefore to question it is unreasonable . In our case, it is simply a one for one swap out of the air handler as the electrical system and drain line are intact and not damaged . If, for some reason, this atypical service was needed, it should be easy to explain why. The inability and/or refusal to explain this atypical service suggests this is a scam and a simply a means to make more money by making both the warranty company and homeowner pay. This also seems to be a scam that they pull often as evidenced through the office manager reporting " I get this question all the time and this is how I'm instructed to answer." Again, this is not a typical service associated with replacing an air handler. When asking again for a better understanding of why this was required and sharing concerns of fraudulent activity, the office manager immediately got defensive and reported that she was no longer comfortable working with us and ended thw call abruptly (i.e. she hung up on us). If a customer has a question about the services being suggested that you are being asked to pay for, it stands to reason that it would be expected that the company would and should be able to explain the reason for said service. I am not sure if this company does good and honest work when not working through a home warranty company however when working through a home warranty company it is clear that they intend to scam the customer and the warranty company out of as much money as possible. I was assigned Fick's through American Home Shield, which generally makes me nervous. Within 2 hours of my request, someone was here (apparently they had a cancellation, and that's not typical). I don't recall his name but he was polite and personable. My problem was that some wiring between my furnace and thermostat was not connected in the basement - so qualify that as "minor" as compared to what some other jobs entail. This was fixed in 30 minutes and I was left as a happy customer. read more

I'm so happy with my repair that I could cry! I have a home with a really old radiant heating system where the copper coils are in the plaster of the ceilings and in the walls. I have been in my home for 21 years and have experienced a multitude of plumbers and mechanical engineers who have damaged the system in the name of completing a repair or threw their hands up because they didn't know what to do. Fick's sent a technician by the name of Derek to my home. I have to admit I was nervous when I saw him because he is young and I immediately thought...here we go again. It's January and we are going to be without heat because this young man is going to screw up my system AND he came without an experienced journeyman. 1st visit - Derek diagnosis the problem and explains what needs to be done. In my mind, I'm all like unh hunh I hear you. You're going to "f" up my system just like all the other young engineers prior. I just know it. He explains that he needs to submit a work order with the AHS home warranty people and then return to do the work. 2nd visit - I actually tried to reschedule it the night before because 1. It is January; 2. The kids and I are at home doing virtual learning and it's going to be cold in here; and 3. I'm nervous as hell that my system is about to be drained into oblivion not to work again for weeks on end. Derek shows up again and alone. My anxiety is at an all time high. He comes in and gets to work. He did everything that he said he was going to do. He did not need to come and get me to explain any out of the ordinary problems. He replaced everything that needed to be replaced, drained the system for the repair, and reloaded the system without issues. He explained everything to me while showing me what was done and I understood him. MY GOD! IT'S A MIRACLE!!! A young contractor who knows what he is doing!!! I was having issues with my Daikin mini splits. I used my AHS home warranty.The technician, Derrick, took one look and told me I needed to completely rip out all the drywall and expose the pipes in the house in order to diagnose the issue. (this is a brand new home). Also that I needed freon and that everything was installed incorrectly. The tech was at my home for a half hour and did not fix the problem or come up with any other solution, other than to get central air. Another service provider came out and not only checked my freon levels, diagnosed that I did NOT have a leak, and changed what needed to be changed. My air is now running smoothly and they assured that if there was further issue they were willing to come back and further take a look. Fick's Mechanical was assigned to me through American Home Shield to repair a non-working furnace. They replaced a part in November 2019. Two days later the furnace would not come on. They returned a few days later to install another part. About 6 weeks later the furnace broke again. They replaced another part and installed a new thermostat. Three days later the furnace would not come on again. After 4 visits, the furnace problem has still not been resolved. I called today to inform of the failing furnace. There was no flexibility in scheduling a technician - no late evening appointments and no weekend appointments. Heather in the office flatly told me either I schedule during their times or find another company to fix the furnace. I have taken off so many days from work to meet a technician to resolve this problem. This is picture is of a 20 year old problem that has continuously plagued me in some way. Instead of replacing it? One of the 13 technicians rigged it up in the first year and miraculously nothing happened until last week!! I've had no heat for 24 hours and problems with the thermostat for weeks. I thought it was just the NEST thermostat. I'm beyond shocked and amazed that it was rigged up with electrical tape and STAPLED to my wall, as seen below. After Dereck from Ficks Mechanical fit me in, he replaced the thermostat and found the problem, FINALLY!! They also did my system replacement two summer ago!! I'm absolutely thrilled with them and that today this was resolved quickly, without breaking the bank. Worst company we have ever dealt with. We have been without AC for two and a half months during the middle of the summer, no thanks to this company as well as our home warranty company. Ficks dropped the ball on us on several occasions. They cancelled our first unit installation the day before they were to come out because they realized they had the wrong unit. This was the mistake of the home warranty for getting the wrong unit, but Ficks had the unit for a week and a half before they also realized this. They finally came out this week to install the new correct unit. Said it was fixed then left. We soon realized it was not fixed as only the fan would run but not the unit. Called Ficks, was told they couldn't get anybody back out. They even told us that we just needed to wait overnight to see if it would come on. Just had one of their techs out this morning. He actually tried to blame us and say we blew out a transformer (we didnt) because our thermostat panel fell off the wall when we tried to adjust it after being told to wait on it to work. The panel as we discovered, had not been secured to the wall. We are so unhappy with this company. They were also extremely rude. read more

I'm glad I went with Fick's, after changing from one of the other local companies (that I started to suspect was incompetent). Fick's sent Dereck, who was awesome today, getting our AC working in no time. He had quickly diagnosed that the wiring had been previously done improperly, and then he fixed it in a matter of minutes--saving us a lot of money, because the other company was trying to charge us for another control board, which we didn't need. They came to do a pre-season check and asked me to add more Freon, a couple months later, my AC is not working and after checking, there is no Freon and need to add it again. This is crazy, I paid over $400 for Freon and now it is all gone? Did they check for a leak before adding Freon? I had a technician come out today, for the 2nd time since the first one looked at my furnace and said it needed a filter and that was that. Well, that was not that because I got the filter the same day and no heat, no air. The visit today my 14 year old answered the door, who is sick with a cold, and asked the technician to please wear a mask. The technician yelled at my son, I was upstairs in my office, well if I have to wear a mask then so do you. I came down and said that is not the way to talk to a child, you should be addressing that with me because I told him to ask you to that as I was finishing up a call and he is sick. We would have no problem putting on a mask. He said yeah you have a good day and stomped out, slamming my screen door. I called immediately and requesting another technician and instead she told me there was nothing they could do and the order was canceled. I paid them however the first time they came out and did NOT fix my furnace. I am reporting to the BBB next. read more

Called another contractor to do servicing on my HVAC, who claimed the heating element was cracked and leaking carbon monoxide into the house. So I put in a service request through my home warranty; we found no evidence of carbon monoxide leaking (on their detector or my home alarm put right over the vent). They told me I could test my home alarm by putting it by a car exhaust to confirm it was working. We have heat again, and don't need to worry about replacing the whole system. read more

I recommend the technicians at Fick's Mechanical. We'd been having trouble finding the source of a leak from an attic A/C unit that caused damage the ceiling in the room below. A different company came out earlier and suggested it was a leaky drain pan, but the problem persisted. The Fick's technician was able identify a faulty condensate pump. The new pump was larger than the old pump and couldn't fit into the old space in the same way. The Fick's technician took time to think outside of the box and place the pump in a new location. He also configured new pipe fittings and then tested the unit to make sure it worked effectively. Well done! I wish I could give them no stars. This company is a scam operation. FICK'S MECHANICAL, LLC was sent to fix my AC Unit through American Home Shield after a company was unable to tackle the complexity of the original service request. I was given a time frame between noon and 4 pm today. I received an email around 2:30 informing me that Mike was on his way and I would be able to track his travel, which showed him arriving at 3:08 pm. When I opened my front door at 3:04 pm, I was greeted by a missed appt invoice for $89. Mike claimed on the invoice that he was there at 2:45 and began work 2:59...untrue. When I called their offices, Rebecca claimed that Mike must have been there and rang the doorbell and/or knocked on the door. When I told her that it was not the case, she told me that I was going to be responsible for the $89. When I told her that there was NO way I was paying this "customer missed appt" fee, she told me to stop raising my voice and hung up on me. I called back and she hung up on my again. I called American Home Shield and explained the situation and they were able to reschedule another appt with another company tomorrow morning. Based on the reviews from other people, I'll take this as a blessing in disguise. This company is a disgrace and I hope that no other home warranty companies will venture to use these people. They have no integrity and absolutely NO customer service. They should be out of business! read more
