The initial inspection involved looking at my daughters vents, then looking at the HVAC before stating that the cost of the repairs and work done might not get the results I'm hoping for. In the future, It would be helpful if they ran through a few preliminary questions or pictures of the unit to see if a trip out is worth the time. Before the technician left I asked a few more questions before he suggested a Home Energy Audit. I'm hopeful that the home energy audit could put me on a better path to resolving the cooling issues in my home. Edit: Rob contacted me after my review and explained a few other details where now I feel the information that he provided was worth the cost.

My HVAC system was ~17yrs old and working, but not efficiently. I decided to replace our system…read moreand asked for quotes from five companies. I picked Exxel to replace our system based on these: 1. Very detailed quotes, model number, seer, eer, afue, capacity, etc. everything that I needed to research and compare. 2. Detail explanation of the warranty period. 3. Explanation of what would happen on the day of installation, again very detailed, so no surprises. 4. I asked for multiple quotes based on two stage and variable stage units and seers. Bob wasn't annoyed that I asked for multiple quotes so I can research and compare. He provided multiple quotes in less than 24hrs. Other companies seem annoyed that I asked for multiple quotes and didn't really provide what I asked for. I felt that he understood as consumers, we all do research before purchasing high price items and he was not annoyed with that fact. 5. I had additional questions (probably some stupid ones that hvac professionals get all the time) and Bob patiently answered my questions. At the day of the installation, they arrived within their estimated time. Bob and Greg were very professional. They called in the morning and gave me the arrival time. Since we don't wear shoes in our house, I had covered our floor with tarps, too my surprise they put their tarps on top of my tarps. It was totally fine with me considering they observed that we don't wear shoes and respected that and tried to keep our floors clean. The install took about eight hours and I was glad that there was no pressure to sell me other stuff. They cleaned up the area before leaving. I highly recommend Exxel and wouldn't hesitate to use them again.....when it's time to replace our upstairs heat pump.

I had been (foolishly) paying $600 a year for their "Comfort Club" service. It's really just an…read moreexcuse for them to make a sales call twice a year. 6 years ago, when they installed a new high-efficiency HVAC for the house, it took them days to get it working and 3 visits from the county to pass inspection. Subsequent Glenmont techs were confused by various aspects of the installation, to the point of making changes in an attempt to get it working properly. This past year, they determined the CO output level was too high and shut down the furnace completely during the coldest week of January. They said they'd get back to me that day. They did not return my calls for 6 days! Where was my "Comfort"? Must be the comfort of the owners that is mentioned in the name of the contract! The kicker? They could have just switched us over to electric heat for the week, but they took more joy in just letting us freeze. Sales calls were very hit-or-miss with the level of the technician assigned: -One tech told me I had the wrong thermostat for my system and wanted to sell me a new one. -One tech told me my blower motor was rusted out because the drip pan had backed up and was about to fail. I told him no and used it for another 6 years. -One tech disconnected the overflow pan sensor on my attic air conditioner, causing a flood that dripped out of the light fixtures in my foyer. However, the Service calls were consistent! They got more expensive every year! Regularly, the cheap starter capacitors on the outside heat pumps would blow on very hot days. Glenmont would come out and replace them with another $45 capacitor and charge between $172, and $452 (this past cooling season).

So, it was time to shop around. Enter Buric. Booking appointments was easy, with multiple reminders including a call 15 minutes out. The technician spent over an hour documenting the system and doing maintenance tasks. The documentation took a lot of the time since he took photos of every part so the next visit the state can be compared. When he went to replace my humidifier pad, he even suggested I save money by buying them on my own and just keeping them near by. I ended up paying the premium and he left the box so I could find replacements more easily. It's great to not only switch from private equity to a locally (Columbia based) owned company, but to get better service at a better cost to boot.
