I'm so glad I went with Mila (Fichu owner) for my wedding dress alterations. She was incredibly kind throughout the entire process, and the end result was better than I could've imagined! My dress had a very detailed lace pattern at the top and a mesh backing, making it complicated to work with. I also procrastinated booking an appointment, so by the time I dropped it off it was only 6 weeks before my wedding. It was her busiest time of year (with postponed 2020 weddings), but she still made it work without complaining. She was able to beautifully alter it (even though my weight dropped a bit, requiring a third fitting). The dress fit perfectly without compromising any of the original gown's design. I went to fichu after a recommendation from Loho Bride. Mila was incredibly helpful - and she had a tough job. I had a wedding dress that essentially needed to be taken in 2 sizes on top, added cups so I didn't have to wear a bra, took in the long lace sleeves, and she even lengthened the slip for my winter wedding. So many positive things can be said about my experience working with Mila on my custom wedding dress. In summary all I can say is that it turned out amazing, I am extremely happy and working with Mila was a pleasure. She is diligent, very detail oriented and has a high regard for craft with a great eye. I wanted to have a chance to design and make my own wedding dress. I found that as a petite, creatively inclined, non-traditional bride (I don't like white and I wanted to wear it again- so two piece outfit it was!) I wanted to make my own. We took process pics along the way to document the process from ordering many samples online, to trying out the mock up bustier and adjusting. Mila was great at telling me when I needed to make a final decision about a detail and when we could defer decisions till later. She was flexible with my schedule (I work remotely and travel a lot - so we timed it over 6 months for me to show up at different points when I was back in SF) and is fairly priced for all the work and care she puts in. In my opinion it is more economical and more value for getting something custom vs going to a bridal boutique. Mila is your person for making this happen- this is not her first rodeo. I highly recommend going to Mila if you want a process that is creative, high craft and literally tailored to your needs. For those that have decision making issues/ don't have a clear vision I don't recommend this process in general. Before I went to Mila I tried on several dresses to understand my vision and what worked/didn't. Mila encouraged me to do this as well, for you need to have a vision and understanding of what works so you can a smooth process. Mila is awesome!! I have been wanting to write this review for a while but haven't had the time til nearly a month after my wedding. I found Mila by chance, walking on Chestnut Street after visiting the nearby Walgreens. I am always in the area so her new storefront caught my eye. Honestly, based solely on her cute window display and the spaciousness and cleanliness of her bright studio (especially compared to the cramped drycleaner that I had used for alterations before- right next door) I decided that I was going to have my wedding dress altered here. It turned out to be a great choice!! Mila is super friendly and very accommodating. Mila also lives right by her studio so when I needed to meet her earlier or later than our scheduled appointment time, she was always willing and able to accomodate me. I really appreciated that as my work schedule isn't fixed and I live in the peninsula. I wanted several modifications to my dress, changing the neckline, reworking the boning at the bust, removing embellishments, and she executed everything perfectly. We had several fittings and I appreciated that she checked in with me at every stage of the alteration. She also made my veil. I didn't know what I wanted exactly and Mila created 3 different mock-ups of veils that she thought would compliment my dress. In the end I went with a simple double tiered veil, but I loved how she created options for me to try. It was the only way I could have figured out what I really did want. Mila also altered a gorgeous heavily beaded rehearsal dinner dress for me. The dress itself was breathtaking, but after Mila tailored it to my exact curves it was to die for!! I was weary of altering it because I knew the job would be labor intensive with all of the beading having to be reworked by hand. I am so glad I did!! That dress sparkled and hugged and dazzled...she did an awesome job! In addition to my own dresses, Mila also altered my MOH's dress for $60, when the place across the street (which she had mistakenly brought it to initially) wanted to charge her $100. The only gripe I do have is that my bustle broke during my reception. I had expressed to Mila that in my experience bustles often break and I wanted her to be sure that mine was enforced enough to hold up my chapel train during a night of dancing. I had even asked her if two points for the bustle was a better idea. She didn't think that it would look as nice so instead she reinforced the thread loop that she had already made. It broke regardless :( I should have been more assertive when asking for a stronger bustle but I assumed Mila was the expert. Oh well. Other than that Mila was great. MILA MADE MY WEDDING GOWN FROM SCRATCH!! I cannot say enough to praise her craftsmanship. I had a vision and brought her some sketches I made. She was the only dress maker in the Bay Area who was up for the task without asking for 10k+. We went to the fabric store together then met every couple of weeks to craft, tailor and adjust the design to fit my body perfectly. I am so impressed by Mila's talent, honesty, work ethic, warm spirit and creative problem solving skills. She has such an eye for crafting beautiful gowns and understands how to manipulate fabric in ways I can't even wrap my head around. Mila completely saved the day! I had a dress custom made by an online custom dress company and when I got it back, it was a disaster. The nude lining did not match my skin at all and the bodice was stiff, smashed down my breasts, and was baggy in the waist area. All in all, the top was not flattering on me and made me look bigger. The bodice basically had to be completely remade as it wasn't just alternations that were needed to make the top look decent. Mila purchased new fabric for me that hugged my curves and was comfortable and most importantly matched the existing sleeves and my skin. She completely constructed a new top, applied all the tiny lace and resewed all the tiny beadwork. Mila was an absolute joy to work with. She's quite possibly the sweetest woman I have ever met. She's friendly, professional, prompt and does beautiful work. If you have any wedding, special occasion dresses I would most definitely take it back to Mila. read more

If I could give 6 stars I would. Let me explain... I found the most amazing dress but really material :) Over the course of a year Mila TRANSFORMED my dress into my perfect vision. On the big day, the dress could not have been more stunning. She was beyond kind, professional and talented. About three months after I bought the dress I was diagnosed with a severe thyroid problem. Thank you so much! I came to Mila with a very tall order. My wedding dress was 6 or 8 sizes too big, it had a lot of complicated beading around the bodice and my wedding was only a month away. Those were my main concerns when i came to her. Yet she was wonderful and had so many ideas for how to make the dress more comfortable and easier to maneuver for my big day. (It was easily a 10lb dress with at least a 7 ft train). By the time she was done with it, it looked much better than when i first tried it on, and it was way more comfortable. I debated writing this review for several months as I'm generally not confrontational, but my wedding dress alteration experience with Mila was poor I feel responsible for letting other brides know to avoid. I was excited about her shop with all the wonderful reviews, and supporting small businesses. She did 4 separate fittings for my dress -- strapless modified A-line. Here's what went wrong with Mila: 1. Her attitude is very stern, demanding, and "my way or the highway". I never felt comfortable telling her what I wanted or disliked. I brought my friends to fittings sometimes, and she was quite demanding and rude to them as well. For example, a friend will come up closer to the dress to see a certain part, and she's request her to leave and not look closely. 2. During the initial fittings, Mila does not allow you to wiggle, walk around, or move around in the dress like how you will in the wedding day. This hides a lot of unforeseen problems that pop up later! 3. On my last fitting, the week prior to the wedding, this was the first time that I was allowed to put on the dress by myself...and it looked HORRIBLE. It was digging into my chest causing really bad 'armpit' fat, the bodice was stitched back together really poorly causing wrinkles. It was so bad that I wouldn't wear this on any normal day, let alone my wedding day. My mother and I expressed concern and all Mila would say is "no fix! no fix!". She would tell us to adjust the dress by pulling it up, which would make it look better, but the instant I'd move my arm or walk...it would shift back and look horrible again. I was nearly in tears, Mila was practically yelling at my mother and maid of honor, and it was just a terrible experience. Thankfully, I ended up going to another tailor down the street and they were so nice, recognized the problems, and fixed the dress overnight (and for cheaper than what Mila charged!). I'll never forget that other tailor for saving my wedding, and also never forget all the stress Mila caused me on my wedding day. Please look elsewhere for wedding alterations. read more

As any bride knows, finding the right wedding gown is only one part of the challenge of the dress. Alterations. The most complicated alterations you could ever imagine. And as a petite woman, (5'2) there were many, many changes to be made for my gown. Mila is an expert seamstress, with a special eye for fit and design. I think she may have almost completely took apart my dress for it to fit into my frame. She listened to my fit preference - form-fitting so I wouldn't get lost - and made sure it fit impeccably. Additionally, Mila created a beautiful belt for my dress, using jeweled ribbon I found at Britex. It completed the gown, and again, fit perfectly. Mila is fantastic!! She has altered several dresses for me, but the most memorable was my wedding gown. It was a gown made of silk chiffon that had tiny layers of fabric going every which direction all throughout, and Mila literally had to take the dress apart and rebuild it from the center outward as it was made for someone about 2 feet taller than me. I can't believe what a great job she did. She was pleasant and friendly every single time I came to see her and was sincerely so excited for me and my upcoming wedding. She really made the experience fun. I'd honestly recommend Mila to anyone. She is a dress-maker by trade and can create master pieces from scratch, so you can definitely trust her with your most coveted items - she will do a great job and she herself won't settle for anything less. If you need a quick hem, she can do that too and she'll do it better than anyone else, but you may pay a few extra bucks for her quality of work. She's over-qualified for tiny jobs, although I still choose to take all of my items to her because she often has a suggestion that will make the alteration even better than what I thought was originally needed. You can take anything to her - she can literally do anything! I just walk in with a dress that doesn't fit right, and ask her what my options are, and she knows her stuff and is honest. She can tell you what your options are and how much each option might cost, and you can make up your mind what you want to spend. She's just great great great! Make an appointment as she works by appointment only. And I appreciate her directness. I feel she is extremely sincere and will help you make alterations so that things flatter your body the way that you want. I read another review that said Mila was judgmental/critical, and the only think I could possibly imagine is that she was trying to help her client select an option that was most flattering for her. I gave Mila a handful of dresses to alter and she had them for over a month (one of them she had for almost 3 . These were all super simple jobs (ie lining or taking out shoulder pads). The day of pickup, she texted to say she hadn't finished them. She had my engagement party dress, flower girl dresses, and rehearsal dinner dress. When I told her I needed to pick them up (which she knew) she was extremely rude, didn't apologize, and ended our conversation by saying "you're clearly no mathematician." She didn't finish all of them, so I went back the following week to pick up the rest. One of the items was a skirt she was lining. After pickup, I realize that she lined my see-through skirt with bright purple patterned fabric (makes 0 sense), so now you see bright purple under my neutral skirt. She also did a terrible job lining 2 other dresses, not even attaching the lining to the dress, and the other didn't match either. I had my bridal gown altered at Fitchu and am so thankful to Mila for all her hard work. My dress had a floral patterned bodice stitched on an invisible underlay. The only issue is the invisible underlay really irritated my skin around my shoulders and neck causing my skin to get really red. Mila did an incredible job with relining the seams around my shoulders so it prevented the irritation but you still got the invisible look. She did each modification little by little to make sure I was happy/comfortable with each change. The only issue was that Fitchu is quite pricey. I ended up having to pay twice as much as I was expecting to pay for altering a dress that already fit me pretty well. But Fitchu was recommended to me by the bridal boutique where I found my dress so I ended up just going with them mostly for convenience. But Mila did an excellent job! read more

My wedding dress had complicated embroidery that made the tailoring (especially the shortening) difficult and Mila did just a beautiful job. She quoted me a price when I first brought the dress in which was inclusive of as many visits as were necessary to get the fit right (50% due up front, 50% when the work is finished). She was also very sweet and had a great eye for what modifications to make and also for the perfect length. This woman is horrible! She is the wicked witch that ruined everything. Came here to get my gown altered. She started making critical comments about my body and my body type which did not make me feel comfortable while I was about to get married. The day I was supposed to pick up my gown, she forgot who I was and completely forgot about our appointment! I asked to check her calendar in her iphone and my name and time of our appointment was right there! She is very judgmental. She caused me a lot of sadness and stress during my engagement. When I told her I was unhappy with her work, she went mad and pulled the dress out of my hands telling me that she would keep it in her store and rip the gown herself with her own hands. I visited my friend's wedding in San Francisco and was given a bridesmaid's dress to wear during ceremony which bride's mom bought for all bridesmaids in Russia. If you ever been in my situation you would know, as a bridesmade you don't have much choice, you wear what bride gives you, and you can't complain, as you don't want to meet your friend in role of bridezilla. DO NOT use this seamstress. Mila was given a wedding dress in March to alter for a wedding in September. She completed the alterations one week before the wedding. The silk dress was dirty & had pulls, runs and holes. The hem was not done as requested. Buttons were not done as requested. Mila said the spacing on the buttons was how they should be, NOT as she was instructed. Mila said the dress should be to the floor altho she was instructed that we wanted the dress an inch off the floor. If she has opinions, that is fine. She can style her dresses any way she likes---but this was not her dress! She had absolutely no right to cavalierly make these decisions for someone else's wedding dress!!! Horrible!! The craftsmanship of what was done was poor. The lining was incorrect. The straps were unfinished. I can't advise strongly enough against using this seamstress. She returned the dress 1 week before the wedding. The dress was not wearable. We had no opportunity to have the dress repaired. We had to buy another wedding dress. Please save yourself the heartbreak we experienced. Do not use this woman. I hope karma bites her in the ass. I have no idea how this "woman" sleeps at night. read more

It was not local Fremont place, usually I don't like to go far. How nicely I was surprised. I wanted to alter my sportcoat jacket. Jacket got very loose because I lost weight and it looked baggy. My friends referred me to Mila. She did very good job altering my jacket, it fits very well now. She took in all seams on back and sleeves. During the fitting I decided to make my jacket a little shorter which came out very nicely. Also I brought a couple of pants (3 pairs) to the shop to adjust pant length, keeping original hemming. Mila is a diamond in the rough. Her pricing is fair, and she is a very very hard worker. I only removed a star because she's maybe too hard of a worker, in that she tends to overbook. I found her little shop back in April and started coming in for my fittings. She is so pleasant to work with, and gives great collaborative suggestions on what tweaks to make to the dress. For my dress, I had her make a sweat heart neckline for my satin top, shorten my layers of chiffon and satin bottom, and create a simple bustle. I love that she is willing to come in at 8 am, even when her shop doesn't open till 11 on a Saturday. That is determination. I'm glad she finally hired an intern, although I'm not sure the intern is as a diligent and helpful as she can be. I will definitely take my dresses to get altered by Mila again, but maybe she's not as busy. She tends to get a little bit scattered when there's a lot of people with requests. Although my bridal boutique had suggested their own tailor, I took my wedding gown to Mila to be altered since I had met her when a friend of mine was getting her dress altered there. My dress was not going to be not easy since it is mostly beaded Chantilly lace and it needed a stronger zipper in the back. I expected to spend quite a bit more than she quoted me since the dress needed to be brought in at a zipper, hemmed, and bustled. I had two fittings before Mila felt that she had everything perfect and was willing to make any cuts. On my third and final fitting, the dress fit perfectly and looked flawless. I also asked Mila to make 4 garters out of my mom's veil (2 for me and 2 for my sister). I wasn't actually sure how they would turn out, but they are BEAUTIFUL. (See picture). I couldn't have imagined anything more perfect. I will not hesitate to bring any of my tailoring needs back to Mila. She is fantastic at what she does, as well as a kind, warm person to work with. Mila does amazing work. She made my multi layer Matthew Christopher lace dress evolve to complement my body and be the perfect centerpiece of our wedding (after I had toned down as brides do and needed it taken in)!!!! I had several fittings with Mila, who is a perfectionist craft woman. Each time we discussed what I thought and what she recommended, we were always on the same page. She added internal cups for more support and lift inside the lining of my dress and took it in all around. I got so many compliments on my dress at my wedding and still through pictures.... Fichu was recommended by Trish Lee from Trish Lee Bridal who is admirably talented but unfortunately the Pnina Tornai dress I found at Kleinfeld was hard to pass up. Given the design and tailoring expertise Trish has, I was confident in seeking Mila's tailoring services. However, I visited other tailors for comparison and the level of experience Mila has in Bridal Alterations are unmatched. The high level of skill was evident when she started evaluating how she was going to tailor my dress. The body is made with lace appliqué with a sheer back that would leave little margin for less than impeccable tailoring workmanship. Not to mention the 10+ layers of English net that Mila artfully created a comprehensive bustle system that required my mom to take careful notes on. There were 10 points to get all that fabric lifted and bustled! She also patiently worked with me on embroidering my "something blue" on the bottom layer of my dress. Mila takes much pride in her work and is willing to do her best for her brides to walk out of her shop with a dress altered to fit her body perfectly without compromising the integrity of the dress; as she would say, "I'll make the dress like it was made for you", what else can you ask for?! It is understandable that Mila is extremely busy so it will require for you to be as thorough and detailed when it comes to cost of service, appointment times and most importantly your level of expectation. She is already taking on the huge responsibility of ensuring your dress is perfection for your special day. The amount of work she puts in warrants the price she charges which comparatively, is reasonable.
