I am so pleased to have found meifei! I brought in a dress hoping to get the adjustable straps shortened and the lady up front was so attentive and detail oriented. She asked me what my goal of the dress was and where I wanted the different spots to hit, and she suggested an alteration that was even better than what I had originally asked for. She is an expert in her field and was able to see how much better the dress would look without the adjustable straps and shortened the straps at the right length to fit me perfectly. She also did all of this by the next day and for a great price. I'm so happy with her work that I'm planning to bring in a few more dresses to get altered that I was just going to live with, but now that I know she's so skilled, I might as well have her perfect the fit of my other dresses. Parking isn't always the easiest in this neighborhood. There are some meters so plan to search and park for about 10 mins - fairly standard for SF. This spot is also very tiny so really only 1 client at a time so there was a bit of a wait (3 people) when I went to pick up my items, but that goes to show how good she is. It is also not the cutest, most aesthetically pleasing alteration spot, but I personally don't mind as long as the end result is quality alterations. read more

Meifei does not accept credit card payments For a pencil dress that needed to be trimmed short by the legs, straps shortened, custom zipper installed cost $160. It would have cost $130 without the custom zipper. Speaking of customer zipper, if you want something 'fancy' you will have to buy it yourself, Mei does not have a selection of custom zippers. She will recommend the style for you. Her turn around time is fast about a week, though summer months are a bit busier, especially wedding season usually two weeks around August. No reservations needed she accepts walk ins. Parking in her area is tough. Lots of piggy bank breaking meters. She's open during covid! Even though the space is smaller, she and her coworker wore masks and I felt very safe. There is a curtained dressing area to try on your clothes. I came to Mei Fei today for a PatBo dress that needed serious hemming and fitting around the waist. The dress was complex with multiple parts and was made out of a delicate silk crepe. Mei Fei did a wonderful job and was able to get it back to me in the same day (think today wasn't as busy for her so she was able to accommodate my request). She also was able to fix a broken halter neck of my cashmere dress. Both she had me try on when I went to pick up so that I could confirm everything was perfect. I would definitely come back to her. Someone else also wrote about her toxic attitude so I figured I'd chime in here too. I've seen her multiple times over the years to get some very basic tailoring done and each time she severely overcharges me. I get that area has rich clientele but not all of us are from the Marina! A simple hem on a regular T-shirt for $100? Ridiculous. I live miles away from the shop so each time I'm forced to pay a $35 uber to even get to her. One time I got there asking for a hem on some pants and she told me to just buy a new pair since she didn't want to do it! I was appalled. She's super abrupt and acts like she couldn't care less about you and I'm guessing it's because she overcharges her rich customers who don't bat an eye, which makes her attitude picky about what jobs she takes. I'll end with a positive, though. Her hems are clean and professional with a decent turn around time so I do understand why rich people keep tolerating her behavior. As for me, I'll be looking for a tailor who has a better attitude with reasonable pricing and I hope you'll do the same. read more

She was gracious and talked through everything I wanted in a first consultation with my mom and I and explained the different options I had for hemming, a bustle & other small alterations. My first consultation was about 6 months before my wedding but she recommended I come back for an initial fitting to take measurements closer to my wedding date. She was efficient & had everything done in plenty of time. My dress had a lace outer layer and a train that needed to be hemmed almost a foot since I'm only 5' 1". She took the bust, waist and hips in slightly as well. I was so impressed with her work and with the complicated lacework you would never know the dress had been altered. It fit me like a glove! She took an already-beautiful dress and made it absolutely gorgeous--she made it fit me like it had originally been crafted for my frame. She was patient with telling me about different kinds of bustles (I went for it) and very up front in making suggestions. Meifei is the GOAT. I trust her with my most treasured (and pricey) items that need alterations. She's been my only tailor for the past 3 years. I can't see any of the alterations after she's finished and she works at warp speed (even when I tell her there's no rush!). Yes she is direct and a bit brusque, but it's because English isn't her first language and she gets nervous when speaking. She's actually very sweet but can seem gruff on the outside. She's only available for drop in's for new requests on Weds and Saturdays (although you can pick up an item any day of the week). She works every day of the week so you'll likely see her in her shop window. Items she's worked her magic on: 1) long maxi dress with a complex botanical print that had four side slits up to the thigh that I wanted to close. She matched the print up perfectly and suggested I keep one of the splits (just make it more modest) since the pattern didn't match and would've looked weird if it were sewn together. She also hemmed the dress to my height perfectly despite the delicate fabric 2) long linen dress with hand embroidered silk patterns. She adjusted the top to fit my chest (and broad shoulders), added padding to the chest to fill the weird air gap, and hemmed it to my height without sacrificing any of the embroidery. 3) added a long zipper to a dress 4) hemmed 2 pairs of jeans (tip: wash and dry your jeans first so they've shrunk before you hem them, else they might be a tad shorter than you envisioned!) 5) hemmed 3 linen pants Meifei is a realist and has recommended I not buy certain dresses because the dress isn't suitable for the alteration I'm interested in (ex. altering an off-the-shoulder dress to a strapless version). I was looking to get alterations for my wedding dress, and a friend recommended Meifei. I had no idea what an emotional rollercoaster getting wedding dress alterations would be, haha...the fact of dropping off a multiple-thousand-dollar-dress in the hands of a stranger and letting them cut it up and put it back together was a scary thought!!! But due to reviews and the confidence of my friend who had her wedding dress done by Meifei, I bit the bullet. Meifei was amazing. My dress happened to be extremely complicated with beading, lace, and some other stuff that I don't even know about...but Meifei expertly altered it down a whole size and the details were SPOT-ON. I tried on the dress in her shop at various time points months apart. Each time she laid down a gigantic cloth tarp for me to step on. With hemming and a French bustle, the cost was pricey but I would not have trusted anyone else with my dress! In the end I was very happy with the results and relieved it all turned out amazingly. Just as an aside, when I was trying on my dress in her tiny makeshift curtain area, the line of patrons was out the door. Some guy came in and asked her to hem his slacks, and Meifei said she didn't have time even if he paid her a ton of money! Highly recommend Meifei! I brought her 10 items (2 pairs of leggings, 4 pairs of pants, 4 t-shirts) and she finished the alterations within a week. She was patient and paid attention to detail as I tried each item on. I wanted my t-shirts to be altered into tank tops, and she asked about my preference for the width of the straps and length of the tank top. She also considered my preference for stitching style. I had forgotten a detail I wanted altered after I left and she was still able to make the change when I told her over the phone. She altered each item perfectly. I also brought in a pair of scrub pants and she told me the outcome I preferred would involve some obviously visible stitching. I really appreciated her honesty, instead of letting me pay for alterations that would ultimately look less than desirable. My wedding dress endured some severe damage after beach/cliff photos and dancing (lol) but she restored my dress to much better condition, way beyond my expectations. She salvaged my detached dress pieces (yikes, I know) and hemmed the damaged edges. She's more pricey than I'm used to paying, but her work is more than worth it. Cash only. Parking is difficult, so have someone drop you off and wait for you with their hazards on nearby if you can lol. INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! Meifei saved my wedding dress. It had arrived much too large all around. It was supposed to be completely fitted mermaid, several layers of satin and lace so this alteration work was a tall order. The first fitting I was so upset bc it really seemed like the dress was going to need complete deconstruction. But she is a magician, wizard, everything. She managed to take in the under layers first and keep the lace intact by creating a seam around the waist which would be under the sash I was going to wear. The night before I picked up my dress she also altered my cape on the fly to button onto the back of my dress. She was so flexible and kind the entire process and she was so busy with customers throughout the entire 6 weeks so I appreciate her kindness on making sure everything was attended too. In sept of 2021, $270 for alterations on two dresses- one was to have about an inch hemmed up and the straps made tighter, and the other was just to be hemmed up about two inches. I have been bringing my clothes to Meifei for more than 20 years, despite the fact that she has never remembered my name or treated me warmly, even after I've complimented her on a job well done or inquired about a recent trip to see her family. I've always let her attitude slide, because she's a talented seamstress and I highly respected her work. I've recommended her to dozens of people through the years, have always picked up and paid on time, and even overpaid at times (on top of her already steep prices), in order to show her how much I appreciated her craftsmanship. Over the past couple years, however, her level of customer service has fallen beneath what any sane person would find tolerable. Several times after I've driven all the way over to the Marina, double-checked that the "open" sign is on the door, searched and paid for parking, and then arrived at her shop, she (or someone else in the tiny, cramped shop) has opened the door to say, "We're closed," with no explanation and without telling you when they'd reopen. (This happened to a couple friends of mine as well.) Today really took the cake, as I went through the aforementioned steps, even going the extra mile and calling ahead of time to see if they were open (however, no one ever answers the phone). When I arrived, the sign on the door said they would be open until 6 p.m., and it was only 3:20. Maifei was there in the shop, alone, and when I knocked, she reluctantly got up, partially opened the door and said, "Not today, I'm done today" and quickly shut the door before I could ask her when she WOULD be open. I mean, she literally slammed the door in my face while I was mid-sentence. She did not say "hello" "or "I'm sorry, I'm so busy," or anything that would have softened the rejection. Holding my dresses in one hand, I knocked softly with the other hand once again, so that I could try again to find out when to return. (Thinking about it now, I was pretty pathetic not having walked away at this point.) She cracked the door open the slightest bit, yelled "Not now" and literally slammed the door in my face. I was so shocked that I was almost shaking. I cannot believe that someone would have the nerve to run their business that way and treat a longtime client that way. I get that she's in demand, and know that she could have been stressed with too much work. But really, after so many years in this business, you'd think she would have learned by now to post a sign in the window, or leave a message on her phone service, when she's closing early, or at least have the courtesy to apologize for turning someone away--especially someone who's made repeated efforts to drive across town and has paid parking in the very expensive neighborhood. But nope. She'd rather go the route of arbitrarily slamming doors on clients and forcing them to go back and forth and beg her to "allow" them to pay her a ton of money for her services. After taking this crap from her for a while now, I'm finally done. Like a toxic relationship that's finally run its course, my relationship with Meifei is officially over. You may not be there yet--I get it, I do--but trust me, you will be at some point. I've already found someone else highly recommended and will NEVER return to this establishment. Relationships and mutual respect are important to me, and there are other business owners in this city who put a value on those traits as well. read more

Mei is a no nonsense Chinese lady and so she doesn't have the same pleasantries you get from some other shops. I'm used to that kind of blunt and abrupt convo and tones from my own parents and family so I don't mind it. I left my dress with her prepandemic before my wedding was postponed 3 times. I had to miss both fittings because it was during our SIP order. I was afraid Mei would have fully altered it and dreaded coming in for a fitting a year later. I showed up and she had done some alterations but luckily left some fabric in case i had gained weight. Came back for my final fitting and the dress looks amazing! The American bustle is nice and understated. She raised the straps on my dress, pulled in the waist, hemmed the dress and added the bustle. The total came out to be almost $900 (cash only.) I think the ball park of wedding dress alterations is about 800s and so I think it was fair. If she has availability then definitely get your dress altered by her. You won't regret it. read more

This review is 3 years past due but I will only add to the positive reviews of Meifei. I brought my dress in 2 months before my wedding. I know, what was I thinking?!?!?! But the moment I walked in, I was treated with kindness and patience. And my experience from having the ladies work their magic at the very beginning to make my dress fit me perfectly is one I won't forget. Luckily my dress didn't require much work, in fact they told me I shouldn't do most of what I initially asked because it would ruin the lines of the dress and not be flattering. I was an anxious mess right up until I tried my last fitting in store. But when the response I received was for 2 random people to come in as they were walking by to tell me I looked beautiful, I knew perfection had been achieved. Try to come on a weekday if you can, they are very busy on the weekends. Also, expect to pay in cash or check. I didn't think they were expensive at all for the work they do. Any bride knows everything wedding related is expensive and alterations are not an exception especially for a dress. The space is tiny, but don't be fooled. Wrong pants! Anyone missing pants for a navy Hugo Boss suit? I picked up my dark navy suit last week but just realized the pants I got back are the wrong ones (yet somehow fit?!). I fell in love with a Tadashi Shoji dress that I wanted to wear for my Rehearsal Dinner, with one issue, they only had one size left which was 6 larger than my own. I purchased it regardless and took it to Meifei to see if she could adjust it down to size. She did all of that and more! She switched the cups of this semi-sheet top from white to nude (I didn't realize what a difference that would make!), added boning to give it more structure, added a zipper for a more seamless fit --- all on top of taking it from a size 8 to a 2! While it was an expensive adjustment, it was worth every penny to be able to wear a dress that turned out better than expected on a very special day! Excellent job by meifei in altering my gowns. She has a good eye for what needs to be fixed. I bought two designer gowns off Poshmark and gotten a ridiculous deal on them. So budget wise I was more ok with paying the $100+ cost for alterations. Though, her expert services cost more than my second-hand dresses themselves haha. I like to give seamstresses as much lead time as possible, and to not stress myself out. So do yourself and meifei a favor and bring your clothes here as soon as you know you're going to need alterations. Also pro tip: have meifei add "bra keeps" to your dress straps. It helps to keep your bra straps from slipping out! Or get cups sewn into your strapless dresses to make life way easier. read more

Meifei altered three dresses for my wedding - my lace wedding dress, my Chinese qipao / cheongsam, and my reception dancing dress. She did a great job on all three, particularly the lace wedding dress, which was very challenging and the qipao (the reception dress was sequined and all I had her do was hem it). My lace wedding dress was trumpet hem, full lace, with 2 types of lace layered over eachother, the one on top, being an embroidered lace that had to be completely removed (to shorten the hem) and reapplied by hand. She also shortened the straps, smoothed out the bust (which was a bit pointy) and smoothed out the bum area, as there was an unflattering bump from the zipper. She also added breast cups, let out the the bust area a bit and did a bustle for me. I think all of that cost me about $500 (wedding dress only). The dress fit like a glove and I will add some photos when I get them back from the photographer! My qipao was made in China remotely, and they only had my measurements, so it was quite ill-fitting throughout the sides. She took the sides in and made the dress fit perfectly to my body, even though the material had no stretch. She also added breast cups. People complimented me so much about how well the dress fit me! Will also post photos of that once I get them back! FYI - I also went to Feichu across the street, and ultimately went with Meifei cause she quoted me 20-25% less than Feichu for my wedding dress. The only issue was my bridesmaids struggled with the bustle on the day of because we couldn't tell what went with what, but I know she tried multiple times to get the bustle to work - due to the sheer layers, it was hard to use fasteners that didn't show through the dress. Also I thought the hemming for the sequin dress seemed a bit steep ($65), but I don't know, maybe that is standard for beaded dresses. read more

My no-stretch linen lace wedding dress that was previously custom made for me became too small (because I ate too many pastries and gelato haha) and Meifei was able to alter it to fit perfectly in two weeks. They handpieced lace over the altered area to look perfect. The seams are perfectly finished. I can't even figure out how they did the alteration. I will definitely be bringing more of my clothes here to get altered. I brought in 4 jeans and blazer to get hemmed since they were a bit long. Since I wasn't in a rush I dropped them off on July 29th and picked them up on July 7th. For all 5 items it came out to $210. I'm not sure how much these kinds of these are supposed to cost but I felt like she did an amazing job. I did ask her reattach the original hem with the new one so I think that was extra. Meifei is AWESOME. I bought a cheap dress online for a special occasion, but unfortunately it didn't fit right. My measurements are pretty hourglass-y: 34-29-39. The armpits hung open, the waist was too baggy, but the dress fit perfectly around my peach. It's a tiny place, so you will have to wait in an awkward spot but it's worth it- Meifei was juggling clients like I've never seen and a constant stream was just flowing in! Once it was my turn, Meifei worked her nimble fingers over the dress, finding all the spots that needed fixing and pinned them in place. The dress is overlaid with this thick white floral lace and the whole thing practically needed to be reconstructed. Once she finished, I went back behind the dressing curtain and attempted to take the dress off. Unfortunately it was stuck full of pins and some of them were poking me in the ribs because I tried to step out of the dress rather than pull it over my head. Meifei heard me whimper and she asked if I needed help. Yes!! I didn't really anticipate this happening, so I had no bra on and only a thong. The dress was around my waist and I was attempting to cover my breasts with one arm and hold the dress from poking me with the other. Meifei opened the curtain not expecting to see the spectacle I made of myself and jumped back quickly while shielding her eyes and profusely apologizing. I told her it was ok. I felt pretty bad, I'm sure she's seen it all but doesn't mean she needs to see more! After re-dressing myself, I asked what the alterations would cost. In total she needed to take in the armpits, completely remove the zipper to readjust the fabric around the small of my back, put the zipper back in, and hand-stitch the waist. On top of it, I was deeply concerned about the floral lace not aligning where all the cuts were going to be, but I didn't voice that. Meifei tallied it all up: $230. YIKES, waaaaay more than I budgeted but I also was in a time crunch and had no alternative. I also felt bad for the boob show, so I committed. Fast forward a week later. I came back to Meifei for a fitting and let me tell you...that woman works absolute MAGIC. I could not see ANY of the alterations, she somehow was able to cut the lace and match it all up PERFECTLY. And, she NAILED the fit on the first try which meant I didn't need to come back for any adjustments. All of the alterations turned this $50 dress into one that looks like it is worth way more. It was my first time getting something tailored and now I can see how something tailored right can totally transform a look. The dress accentuates my figure in all of the right places and it looks elegant AF. Once we were upon check-out, I didn't realize that she is cash or check only. I asked if I could come back the next day to pay and she was totally fine with that (I didn't take the dress). I asked when she closed and she said, "7pm I close the store, but I stay till 9pm working." I was surprised at how hard she works and she said the night before she stayed till MIDNIGHT. My eyes widened and I asked how she ever gets a break. She said, "Oh I came in late today- 8am, so I feel good." All this with a smile on her face. I don't typically write reviews on Yelp but a friend just asked if I knew a good tailor/seamstress and after waxing lyrical to her about how wonderful Meifei was, I suddenly thought more people should know about her! Not only is Meifei highly skilled at tailoring, but she also has a great eye for the best fit. I found her on Yelp several years ago and wouldn't go anywhere else now. read more
