There's different type of tailors in SF, the pricey kind that carefully will alter a $5k piece or a wedding dress, your neighborhood tailor that will fix a hem or a button but it will come undone after a few washes, and then there's the HB alterations team that will do a SOLID job for a reasonable price and offer great customer service. So far I've brought in several trousers for alterations and they do such a professional and clean job on each one. I couldn't recommend anyone else if you're in the Union Square area. I've been coming here since 2019, which is why this was such a disappointing experience. I paid $70 for a taper and hem, and during the fitting the pinned shape looked great. When I picked up the pants, they were nowhere near as tapered as what had been discussed. No problem, I thought. Alterations are subjective. Sometimes things need a second pass. What should have been a routine conversation turned into a complete crashout. I wasn't asking for a refund, raising my voice, or making a scene. I simply asked if we could revisit the work. The reaction was surprisingly hostile and unprofessional, especially considering I've been a customer for years. After reading other negative reviews, it seems I'm not the only person who's had this experience when providing feedback. The biggest issue isn't the pants. It's the trust. If a tailor can't handle a polite request for a revision on a basic pair of trousers, why would I feel comfortable bringing in Prada, Saint Laurent, a favorite vintage Levi's piece, or a family heirloom? Crazy way to end a six-year customer relationship over something that should have been a simple fix. read more

I have brought several items to them during prepandemic times and most recently, and their service has always been impeccable with reasonable prices and short turnaround around time. I brought a cheap floor length trench coat to them and asked them to build me an inner lining so it would become slightly more wind proof. I knew it was going to be a challenging job since it would likely mean partially deconstructing/taking apart the jacket so the inner lining can be attached from the inside. Within 3 weeks worth of time, they had sewn in this beautiful silky satin lining with matching color. I wore it over my sweater and long sleeve shirt in a brisk afternoon, and sure enough having the extra lining completely helped! I also asked them to hem several pairs of thrift store pants with frayed edges. They did a beautiful job with picking out matching thread for hemline without significantly shortening the length. During my pick up I gave them additional jobs to repair several moth holes I discovered in a couple of wool items, including a beautiful tweed blanket I bought from Falkland Islands (I almost donated it). While I eagerly await to receive these items back I am confident that their work will continue to showcase the fine craftsmanship they always deliver. I cannot recommend this place enough! Their location is close to the Montgomery BART/MUNI station which is ideal esp if you're dropping off before or after work, coming from East Bay. The entrance is a bit hard to find but just make sure you ring the right door bell and they will buzz you in. read more

I came in here to take up a formal gown that was too tall for me. The owner was extremely helpful, giving her opinion on the length. I would've gone too short, and she insisted I not do that. She was right, and I'm so grateful she cared enough to ensure I had the right length, not the wrong length I thought I needed. She knows what she's doing! They are quick and very reasonably priced. I had a very disappointing experience here, which was surprising given all of the positive reviews I had seen before giving this place a try. I brought in several items for alterations, which totaled over $400 of work. The request was the same for all items--take it in at waist/hips/etc. After getting my items back, one of the items was not at all fitted properly. The skirt was taken in at the waist, meanwhile the hips still gaped out awkwardly. When I returned to HB to ask for a fix, Hulan demanded I pay again. She said I didn't ask for the hips to be taken in and I should have explicitly stated this. Any expert tailor would know (or at least have clarified), that the request was--like ALL other items--to be comprehensive and include alterations at waist and hips. She was furious when I asked her to do the work as an amendment or fix to the original job. She said she said she did the work weeks ago and I could have "changed sizes since then" (lol, three weeks had gone by). She was started rattling off to her business partner partner, exasperating loudly before reluctantly agreeing to do the work. At this point, I figured we'd both want to end in a positive note...I told her I'm very grateful for the accommodation and will know for next time. She refused to look me in the eye or respond, and just walked away silently. So bizarre?! This would be odd for anyone in client service let alone a business owner. I've had a nearby tailor for over 10 years (he retired which is why I'm in the market for a replacement), spend thousands on alterations annually, and aware of what good work looks like. I have no doubt others have had a good experience here...but clearly there are also major gaps in Hulans service offering & bedside manner. read more

They saved my faux leather jacket!!! I went in with a difficult task for them. The faux leather on my collar was partially falling off. Hulan suggested me ways to tackle that certain area and when she was done with it, not only did my leather jacket got repaired which was my main issue, it looked even better with the way she stitched it in. Ok admittedly HB isn't that cheap, but they are definitely professionals and the caliber of their output has been consistently great. I've had atleast 15 items altered by them (sleeves, pant hems, coats), and each time, I've felt the quality has been awesome. Because of the cost, I would only take higher quality items to HB- but they do a really consistently excellent job. I had this coat belt that was irreversibly dirty and frayed from hanging outside of a moving car , and instead of cutting the end off (or purchasing fabric to create a new belt), the owner had this brilliant idea of turning the belt inside out and taking the interface off to reveal fresh fabric on the inside . I brought my designer dress pants here to get hemmed because my friend recommended them. However they charge 2.5+x what other places in Chinatown charge and I was so upset to find out that my pant legs are different lengths. I would expect better from somewhere that charges so much for a simple hemming. This is actually so ridiculous, one leg is 2+ inches longer than the other. I could've done a better job by myself at home with DIY items from Amazon. This place is also cash only, so you cannot dispute charges. read more

Suddenly, after what feels like centuries of hiatus, I was actually invited to things! The thrill of buying dresses and reviving old ones in my closet that by now all of my friends and family have forgotten purely overwhelmed me with joy. Except I realized something. The stress of work and COVID, and not being able to eat lunches because doffing and redawning PPE was just too much of a hassle did a number on my waist line. My dresses were saggy and loose and no longer flattering on me, the new ones I bought while more tailored where made for the likes of giraffe human hybrids. Needless to say I needed to find someone with a meticulous touch and speedy service to help me out for these upcoming celebrations. I found Hulan because of the yelp reviews and was happy to find she is just a bounce and a blue house coffee away from my apartment. I shoved me dresses in my good old trader joe's canvas bag and walked over hoping she could help me. Instantly I trusted her. She pinned each dress to perfection and considering San Francisco prices she was very reasonable. Not to mention she was able to shorten one dress I needed in less than 1 week. Each dress I gave her she handed back to be altered to perfection. I went here last year when I was in a rush and needed some pants hemmed, plus a few buttons to be re-sewn on a blazer with less than a week before a wedding I was in. Thankfully I found HB Alterations, not only were they less than 3 blocks from my office but they were so fast and accommodating. The business is tucked away, and you have to take a very cramped elevator (cannot fit more than 2 people comfortably) to go up. When you arrive at their floor, you're literally falling into their store. I didn't get my items altered, but disappointed with customer service. I came in to ask for a quote and stated this twice (once over the phone and once in person). I've never had my clothes altered before and didn't know what to expect. I suppose to owner didn't hear me say this as well as that I just wanted a quote. But she started pinning me in and began assuming that I would go with them for alterations. When I was confused about what was happening, owner was became frustrated at my questions and concerns. I decided to not go with them because I didn't feel comfortable with them in the end. Owner ripped up the measurements she wrote down and said I should have told them earlier that this was a quote.
