Being fun sized, alterations are a sunk cost. No matter what I buy - pants, shirts, jackets, etc have to be shortened or taken in. I found HB Alterations on yelp and have been happy with their work. They are not the cheapest alterations place but they are convenient for those who work in FiDi or Union Square. I think they do the alterations for Burberry and Banana Republic as well. read more

I took some jeans here to get hemmed (because I'm short and my jeans are ALWAYS too long) as well as a sweater that had a huge hole in it hoping they could fix it, and in a week they sure got the job done, even better than I expected! For my jeans I asked for the original hem and it costed $20 - pretty reasonable price for SF. It also costed $20 to fix the hole in my sweater but they did such a good job at making it look like the hole never happened that I thought it was well worth it. The location is conveniently located near my apartment and near Union square, but the only annoying thing is the hours are pretty limited so I was only able to go on Saturday morning. However I was very satisfied by how great of a job they did so I'll be taking my alterations here from now on. read more

I'm sure many of you out there have also gained weight during the pandemic WFH and now that we're going back to the office, we can't lose weight fast enough to fit into our pre-pandemic clothes. This was why I went to HB Alterations. I knew them from 5 or so years ago when I worked in the FiDi and brought in a few pairs of trousers to hem. They were my go-to tailor -- reliable, high-quality, and the nicest people. Recently, I came in with a difficult task for them: 1) to add more fabric to expand a few jackets and trousers with labels from Boss, Philip Lim, Theory and 45r and 2) tailor a beautiful suit jacket and suit trousers from Vince that were a full size bigger when I purchased them. Hulan took great care when she was doing measurements. She took time to explain her strategy for expanding the clothes. For the pieces to take in, she also made suggestions for right-sizing the length of the arms and width of the shoulders. For the pieces that needed to expand, she used her white chalk to trace the areas on clothes where she would be making alterations, while the clothes were on me. When it was not possible to expand other items, she let me know the reasons -- not because they couldn't do it, but because the alterations would inevitably look off. After we were done measuring, I paid upfront and completely trusted that they would do a great job. When I picked up the items and tried them on at home, I was so happy with the work they have done on the clothes!!! They looked amazing on me. I was on a tight timeline, with my BFF's black tie wedding two weeks away and a dress that was way too big. I called HB on a Monday and explained I was bringing in a formal dress for hemming and taking in at the shoulders in order to lift the bust line. I asked if they could have the tailoring completed by the following Monday and was told yes and reminded to bring the shoes I planned to wear with the dress. I arrived with a friend, put the dress on and Hulan pinned it promptly. When I returned, I tried the dress back on and it fit like a dream, very nearly like a completely different dress altogether. There hasn't been a better tailor in the City since Andreas Gorges, who operated in the same area in a similar fashion back in the early 2000s as far as I know. He was probably here for ages and had a mastery type of vibe to him. This place gives me deja vu to that. This place has the right sensibilities, utilities, decorum and are solid. I am extremely particular about who I take my clothing to be altered by. You almost could call me an elitist or snob as I also know a great deal of tailoring, alterations and seam-stressing myself. Fast forward to my second visit, for the same service. Same size polo. Same long-sleeve. Same service. Cut it down to short-sleeve. Same length cut. But this time, they charged me $35.00. After the work of a few other tailors in the neighborhood left me unimpressed, I sought out a new one on Yelp. Stopped by last week and a very friendly lady directed me to the changing room and pretty quickly pinned my too-big dress into a smaller size (non-returnable online sale FAIL). After I was all pinned up, she quoted me a price, which ultimately was more than the dress I purchased on sale at anthro, but I've learned from all the other tailor-experiences that I clearly have no actual concept of what alterations cost so I decided not to have sticker shock until I saw the quality of the work. I picked up my dress a week later and it was perfect. I'd definitely use them again for future alterations. read more

As far as alterations goes, this place takes the cake. It's located above a sweet shoppe and is pretty much the size of a small studio apartment, which made me a tad bit weary. Now I know that space doesn't make a difference. The ladies that were working here were highly knowledgeable in terms of the different lengths to set the alterations at. For example, my gf had brought in a few pairs of jeans to get hemmed, and they recommended different lengths based on the types of shoes she was planning on wearing with the jeans. They also did a fantastic job in repairing the lining of her coat. Overall, they did an excellent job with the hems (only $12 each!), made sure to have the items available at our earliest convenience, and were very courteous. Quick tip: cash only! read more

Horrible horrible place!! And the customer service is terrible. AVOID at all costs. I tried this place for the first time based on the reviews on yelp. I gave a dress to be altered and when I went to pick it up it had marks all over the dress and when I asked them about it they said it was sticker marks which magically appeared and weren't there before. It took me 10 seconds to spot the marks. I even was being considerate and said just dry clean it or refund me dry cleaning price and she just started yelling. The tags were on the dress so I could have at least returned it before she did the alterations if they really existed before she touched them! The dress wasn't even that well altered and makes me look like a sac. Never going back! read more

I'm a bit torn in my rating - came in a few months ago to get: - 2 pairs of jeans hemmed - 1 long bridesmaid dress hemmed - 1 short dress to take in the chest/bust area (was too baggy) The jeans came out excellent - perfectly hemmed with some additional tapering to stay "ultra-skinny". The bridesmaid dress needed a straightforward 6" hemming - came out great. 5 stars for these. But the last dress - I should have inspected it more when I picked it up. It was a spaghetti strap halter-style dress that was loose in the chest area (but otherwise fit fine). After I got home, I noticed that they didn't alter the torso of the dress at all (which was originally how we had pinned it when I tried it on at HB Alterations). Rather, they had gone ahead and shortened the straps. WHaa?? So not only was my dress still baggy in the bust area, but the shortened straps made the dress cut into my armpits. Luckily, they had only looped the excess strap together to shorten it - so I used scissors to cut and unloop them back to their regular length. Essentially, I paid $40 to have 0 alterations done to that dress. 1 STAR. read more

But if you are looking fir a decent tailor who won't mess up your $1000 jacket, you got the right place. My first time to be here was for a blazer that sholder part was a little bit loose for me Because it's an experience blazer with weird materials, I went to see 2 tailors but none of them wanted to take it. By far the best denim/jeans tailoring I've ever seen. I took several pairs of pants and my nicest pairs of jeans to them and they shortened and/or tapered every one of them flawlessly. Capable of handling simple alterations. Complex asks? Not so much. I brought a blazer to have the sleeves shortened, but because of buttonholes, the sleeves had to be shortened from the shoulder. Because this is a complex alteration, it costs $80. While that gave me pause, the excellent Yelp reviews were enough to make me trust HB Alterations to handle the job. When I picked up the blazer though, I found out she'd shortened the sleeves incorrectly, creating tightness across the chest and shoulder blades. I learned online that these are common issues with improperly shortened sleeves, and so I brought the blazer back to see if she could fix it. She continuously insisted that because she "didn't change the size of the arm hole" it shouldn't be tight. What she ignored is that it's not about the size of the armhole but the shape she trimmed the sleeve to - maybe this would have been fine on a men's blazer where you have slightly more tolerance and larger sizes, but not on a small women's blazer. Despite denying that she'd done some thing wrong, she agreed to provide some adjustment at no extra charge. Of course, because the fabric had been trimmed, there wasn't much she could do. My blazer fits much worse than before it was altered, and the only reason I haven't given up on it entirely is that it was very expensive. It's permanently ruined and HB Alterations is to blame. If these alterations were not possible without compromising the fit, she should have refused the alteration. I might take pants here to be hemmed, but don't come here with anything complex. read more
