You can tell where they started tapering when the thread layers on top of each other.
Linda N.

After calling countless tailors in SF who can taper my selvedge jeans, I settled on SF Tailors. Self Edge (the raw denim shop that recommended me) highly recommended SF tailor. Since I spent an ungodly amount on these jeans, I might as well spend another $55 to taper them. Selvedge denim is a bit different from regular denim. You need to taper from the inseam and most tailors don't know about this. Tailors also need to have a chainstitched machine. I was quite reluctant going in but the owner reassured me that he's worked with many many selvedge denim. I put my trust in him and came back a week later extremely impressed and satisfied! The thread color never changed colors and they used the same chainstitched method on my jeans. You can barely tell it was altered. I had another pair of regular jeans hemmed and i didn't have any complaints about that either. I highly recommend this place if you have complicated and expensive denim to alter. Now I can wear my jeans clean cut and in style *insert emoji with sunglasses* My expenses here: $15 to hem regular jeans $55 to taper selvedge denim on the inseam

Inside stitching of a hemmed pant immediately after I picked them up.

First of all, here is a link to have a closer look at their work: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/er1c15/DSCF3965.jpg This was the first AND LAST time I will be going to San Francisco Tailors. I decided to try them out based on Yelp reviews. Sadly, the bad reviews that they did receive were not done so in vain. Customer service is significantly better with regular customers than with those who are new to their business. It is almost as if you must pass a period of time before you are deemed worthy of their friendship. That aside, the main reason I WILL NOT make use of their services in the future is their less than mediocre workmanship. I ordered 3 pants to be hemmed and all 3 ended up the same way. The stitching inside was CRUDE and equal to the skills of a 7th grader in home economics. The thread from the previous stitching was NOT entirely cleared out. The seams were misaligned. There were places where the fabric was cut, and LEFT unsecured, leaving those places to fray and unravel over time. Lastly - and this I COULDN'T believe -, there was a piece of fabric that they seemed to have forgotten to press down before stitching it - essentially leaving the fold permanently stitched in place. All in all, this place was cheap and quite quick. And while the final results looked good on the outside, closer inspection unveiled a different story. They may have well have ironed my pants to where I needed them hemmed, and secured the fabric with a stapler and a glue gun. San Francisco Tailors's star rating on Yelp is NOT enough to convince me of their reliability. However, you may want to figure this out on your own, as I did, and will NEVER do so again with San Francisco Tailors.

So far I've brought in several trousers for alterations and they do such a professional and clean job on each one. I couldn't recommend anyone else if you're in the Union Square area. When you make it to the building they will need to buzz you in and they are located a quick elevator ride on the second level.

I brought a cheap floor length trench coat to them and asked them to build me an inner lining so it would become slightly more wind proof. I knew it was going to be a challenging job since it would likely mean partially deconstructing/taking apart the jacket so the inner lining can be attached from the inside. Within 3 weeks worth of time, they had sewn in this beautiful silky satin lining with matching color. I wore it over my sweater and long sleeve shirt in a brisk afternoon, and sure enough having the extra lining completely helped! I also asked them to hem several pairs of thrift store pants with frayed edges. They did a beautiful job with picking out matching thread for hemline without significantly shortening the length. During my pick up I gave them additional jobs to repair several moth holes I discovered in a couple of wool items, including a beautiful tweed blanket I bought from Falkland Islands (I almost donated it). While I eagerly await to receive these items back I am confident that their work will continue to showcase the fine craftsmanship they always deliver. I cannot recommend this place enough! Their location is close to the Montgomery BART/MUNI station which is ideal esp if you're dropping off before or after work, coming from East Bay. The entrance is a bit hard to find but just make sure you ring the right door bell and they will buzz you in.

I will definitely be checking them out for my future alteration and dry cleaning.

I let him know I had worn it for the first time on 5/26/25 for a wedding, about five hours straight. There was no damage or visible stains, but the inside of the jacket, specifically the armpit area, had a little deodorant/sweat odor from wearing it for hours. Jay reassured me they could take care of it. I had originally gone to another place first, I walked into SF Green Clean, which said they couldn't remove armpit sweat odor with dry cleaning. (To be fair, the woman I spoke with there was very sweet, so no complaints on her customer service.) That's how I ended up at Sonia's Dry Cleaners. Jay told me they'd be able to handle it, and if I wasn't satisfied after the first attempt, they'd clean it again at no extra charge. He mentioned if needed there were other chemicals they could use to get a smell out if needed/depending on the material of the jacket and that prices would vary if needed, but he looked at it and quoted me when I dropped it off for $25. I dropped it off on 5/28/25 with no rush order. When I picked it up on 6/9/25 and checked it, the odor was still present. I went back inside and spoke with Mary at the front--she was VERY kind. I pointed out the specific area I was hoping they could focus on, and she told me it would be ready by 6/12/25 and that they'd call or text me when it was done. On pickup day, I called ahead and spoke with Jay again. He was EXTREMELY kind and made it clear they truly wanted to earn my business. He even said they'd be willing to clean it a third or fourth time if necessary. That level of care and professionalism really stood out. I expected I might have to ask for a refund or run into a problem, but instead, the whole interaction was handled smoothly and respectfully. When I picked up the jacket, the smell in the armpit area was completely gone. It looked and smelled brand new, bagged and ready for the next event. It was in a clear bagged packaging and had a metal copper hanger (the copper hanger was encased in a wrapped paper like material but seeing the metal iron worried me because I've had old copper hangers rust/leave the copper residue on materials, thankfully this one didn't, but I also assume since it's wrapped that it's not meant to be hanging on it long term, but just an observation for someone who might worry like I do) I was originally leaning toward a 3-star rating because I had to return for a second cleaning and didn't receive the call/text updates I was told to expect (Mary did mention their system may have been down). But their exceptional customer service, especially the way Jay and Mary handled everything completely won me over. That extra effort earned the business 4 stars. (The dock was having to come back in due to it looking/smelling the same which was mentioned my main concern, and them not contacting me when they said it'd be ready both times) I don't know the price of more dry cleaning items but thankfully I don't do dry cleaning so often. I'll definitely be back and will update my review after my next visit. Thank you!

I first met Sandra about two years ago when I needed a rushed alteration on a complicated designer dress. She was incredibly meticulous and made it fit me perfectly. Since then, she's done many alterations for me and created several custom pieces for my wedding and bridal events. She made my bridal reception dress inspired by Vivienne Westwood, altered my actual Westwood ceremony dress, and designed my fully custom rehearsal look, along with two sexy black dresses, one for my bachelorette and one for New Year's Eve. She just gets it. Everything fits beautifully, feels considered, and is executed at a really high level. Sandra is skilled, attentive, and genuinely enjoyable to work with.
