    Owner's response when I asked for a refund for a service I didn't receive
    Lauren N.

Very rude, insulting owner, who actually shooed me from the shop when I first arrived, didn't fulfill my simple bridesmaid dress hemming request that I paid $55 for, and then turned the tables on me when I requested a refund for a service that I didn't receive. My only request from her was that my bridesmaid dress be hemmed at the bottom to ensure I wasn't tripping over my dress, but I'm unsure if the dress was hemmed at all, because the gown was still dragging on the ground by at least 2 inches after I picked it up from her shop and wore it for the wedding. As a result of the gown being too long, I ended up tripping over my gown throughout the day and literally poked 3 holes in the bottom of the gown when my heel was caught in the extra fabric as I was walking. I paid $55 for the hem, which seemed high for a simple hem, but after realizing that I paid $55 for a service I did not receive, I asked for a refund. She instead turned the tables on me, and implied that it was my fault because I asked to pick up the dress a day earlier and didn't try the dress on when I picked it up. I actually couldn't try the dress on in the shop because I had just walked up the steps and was sweaty from 15 minutes of stair climbing. And for an alteration so simple, I didn't expect I would need to try on the dress a second time. I've had dozens of garments altered, mostly by Nordstrom, and never had to try on a second time. But apparently she feels that because I declined a second "try on" of the dress, she's not accountable for her insufficient services and it's still reasonable for me to pay full price for a service that I didn't at all receive. Because of this shop, I am out $55, plus the cost of the dress due to the damage caused. The owner does not at all seem to be concerned with customer service or quality, so I will not be back and cannot recommend to anyone.

Simple draped wedding dress by Nancy designer

Nancy, who is the fabulous designer and owner of this wonderful boutique shop, was accommodating and flexible with my sisters' and my work schedule! She has a great eye on customizing what you want and produces it in a timely manner! We needed bridesmaid dresses for a Chinese banquet and the theme was regal purple! Nancy aced it with the lacy design as well as still keeping it traditional with the Chinese style! I loved it and the fit was perfect! My eldest seestar was the one who needed her fair wedding dress and we collaborated over time, looked over options and ultimately decided on an ivory, silk fabric dress! My seestar looked beautiful in it and Nancy surely did the trick on customizing everything to her fit and needs! I highly recommend this boutique shop! Nancy does wonders!

My sister had gone to Nancy to alter her wedding dress when she got married in 2014. When I got engaged, I immediately knew I wanted a custom made dress and I contacted Nancy in February 2018 (our wedding was at the end of July 2018). I made an appointment and went in where she took all my measurements and I told her what I was thinking and showed her a picture of a dress that kind of looked like the dress I had in my head. Two months later, I went back and there was a dress. Not all sewn together yet, but it was definitely looking like my dress! I tried it on and she made some suggestions (all great ones) on the neckline and train length, etc. I had one more fitting and then went to pick up the dress. It was perfect and fit like a glove! The price wasn't too crazy for a custom made dress either. I did end up going back once after I picked up the dress to have the bustle moved higher so I wouldn't step on my train as much. Sidenote: The train still got stepped on. It's filthy, but the dress is still beautiful. Nancy is super friendly and she doesn't make you feel like you're too fat if you ate a little extra for lunch before you came in to try on your dress. Definitely go to Nancy if you want her to make a dress for you from scratch or get alterations done. She's the best!

This is crazy long over-due, but I'm on here looking for a house cleaner and somehow - I'm back on Nancy's page. (lol) I hired her a couple months back in October to create a red dress for my tea ceremony. I can start by saying that all communication with Nancy was easy and straight to the point. When you are not in your element (aka you don't know what the heck makes a great dress), Nancy is a great guide giver. You could say she was the Maui to my Moana. (You're welcome.) She advised me to heighten my dress collar as I had a long neck - which is not something i would have EVER noticed. She also knew where exactly to have the waistline of my dress to accommodate for my body. Another thing I truly appreciated was Nancy's gentleness. Anyone above two pounds in the Asian community can be seen as ridiculously obese. As a bride, you get a rude awakening really quickly that most people will say what they want about your figure, weight, skin regardless if you asked. Nancy was professional and didn't have that nagging Asian mother feel that I was dreading. Thanks for everything Nancy!

I dropped by here today to pick up some face masks I had custom made from a military camoflage bandana I had. Nancy did a great job of making 3 masks from it! I intend to have more masks made here again!

Dress inspired by the J.Crew Aveline gown, handmade by Nancy!
    Aesun K.

Nancy truly came to my rescue and made me the wedding dress I always wanted for my wedding this past May. After multiple stops at different wedding boutiques and online searches, I knew I wanted a minimal design silk-crepe dress that channeled a previous J.Crew bridal design. (Unfortunately, J.Crew no longer makes wedding dresses and previous designs are hard to come by in your size.) It was difficult for me to find a simple design that had the features I wanted. After hearing about Nancy from a friend who also had her help for her wedding dresses, I sent her a message with the design I was looking for. She was very responsive, told me it was something she could make for me and we proceeded to schedule several fittings throughout the months leading up to my wedding. She sized me up about 8 months prior, went through all the details I wanted, the concerns I may have, and 4 months before in January she had me come in again for another sizing before she began to build the dress. She also let me go through different color swatches of the silk crepe, helped me choose the perfect one for my skin tone. Leading up to my wedding, Nancy was very helpful with any last minute nerves I had, since I wouldn't be able to try on my dress till about a month prior. She let me stop by whenever I wanted to try it on, making time to go through minute details, helping me see what the finished dress would look like. She was so patient throughout the process, I was very relieved and felt I could be open with my thoughts. In terms of cost, I feel Nancy was very affordable! The dress was made to my measurements from the get-go and included a bustle, all extra costs that I would have incurred if I bought the dress second-hand or at a different boutique. My wedding dress was exactly how I wanted it to be and I cannot give Nancy enough praise for her lovely handiwork. I will treasure my dress forever! And may come back to have it altered to a midi-dress for future anniversary occasions. Thank you so, so much Nancy! You are a gem!!

Nancy Bui made my beautiful lace qipao
    Nancy W.

So I'm writing this a few months later so please forgive the details being a smidge fuzzy (especially because Nancy Bui was always incredibly precise!). Nancy made me a beautiful red lace qipao for my wedding. The color of the dress was so beautiful - a deep jewel tone red with red and gold piping. I first reached out to Nancy over email and she responded later that same day - we corresponded over what I might like, and I sent her pictures of her past work that I was interested in to give her a vague idea of what I was looking for. From there she was able to give me a price estimate and the time frame it would take for her to make either a brocade or a lace qipao which ended up being roughly about $300-$400 and 4-6 weeks, depending on style. She was really clear about fabric vs. labor costs; her pricing was always transparent and without my asking she broke down the costs of specific fabrics, piping, and labor for different options and levels of detail. Anyone coming to her with a tight and strict budget would find all her detailed and (readily volunteered) pricing information incredibly helpful. A few months later (I didn't realize it wouldn't take that long to make so I had emailed her way too early), I walked in over the weekend and we looked at fabrics together. She had a number of qipaos on display and I tried on a lace qipao which she pinned the back of so I could have an idea of what it would look like. She was really patient and helpful throughout the decision making process. I paid her in two installments - when I first met with her to make my dress and then at my fitting. The next time I saw her was at dress pickup and I got a chance to try on the dress then, too. In the end, my dress cost a bit over $400, but that was because I went for some extra detailing. It took Nancy about 5 weeks to complete the qipao in August-September for my November wedding. When I took the dress home, I realized the dress was too tight over the hip (the fabric didn't hang quite right because of that), so I called her and she had me walk in whenever convenient that week and she loosened it in a few minutes at no extra charge. She was very easy to work with and I would totally recommend her to anyone looking to have a custom qipao made. Thanks so much Nancy :)

So I went to Nancy's San Jose shop four weeks ago, wanting a prom dress made. The result? Absolutely stunning! I love it. She has a great eye and a great personality to match along with it! I would definitely recommend her. She only comes on Mondays to the San Jose shop though. :) So go to her San Francisco shop! :) Pictures of the dress can be seen in the photo section.

This is the ao dai wedding dress Nancy made me for me. Thanks Nancy!
    Annalyn C.

Nancy is amazing. I just got married earlier this month, and had her design and make a customized ao dai made out of a cream lace. Let me tell you, EVERYONE at my wedding raved about how beautiful my dress was, asked who made it, how did I get the idea, etc. The beauty of the dress is that I showed Nancy a picture once, and she was fully confident that she could design and sew it. I was a little nervous, knowing that was paying for a dress that I wouldn't be able to try on beforehand. Also, it was hard to picture how it would turn out. Needless to say, I was so happy with the final result. There was nothing to worry about! It came out fantastic and I just had to make two trips: one to get my measurements and two, to get fitted and have it all ready that same day. I also want to add that Nancy was available via phone or email if I had any follow up questions. She always reassured me that it would turn out great, and was open to any feedback and ideas I had regarding my ao dai. I would trust her in a heartbeat to make any dress, ao dai or a "Westernized" wedding dress. I am so glad I went to her instead of buying a dress at David's Bridal! :)

Front of my white lace ao dai. Cups added for support. Most comfortable ao dai I've ever worn!

I had a horrible experience getting my ao dai (traditional Vietnamese formal wear) made in Orange County. The garment was ill fitting, was totally not what I had been promised, and it was devastating because I only had 6 weeks until my wedding to figure something out. Chi Nancy came to the rescue! She gave great suggestions on how to make my dress modern and special. She had the perfect lace in her store and it only took one fitting to make the most minor of adjustments. She even helped me understand Vietnamese traditions a bit more so I made the right decisions, like how I shouldn't wear a white hat with mine because that's for funerals. My ao dai ended up being completely perfect. It fit like a glove and it was so flattering! My non-Vietnamese bridesmaids were completely in love with it and I wish I had more reasons to wear it! My family had never seen anything like it and they loved that it was a beautiful nod to tradition, but looked like an American wedding dress. Chi Nancy made the process so easy! I just want her to be my tailor forever. She also helped alter my husband's ao dai. It was made by the same bad tailor I had in Orange County and it was HUGE on him. She added a hidden dart and it made a world of difference. The price was also the same as the tailor in Orange County, which I thought was super reasonable. Thank you so much, Chi Nancy, for helping us honor my Vietnamese roots at our wedding. You are the best!

My wife and I decided to get married when gay marriage was still illegal in California. Thank you Prop 8. We wanted the ceremony, our friends and family, legal or not. We wanted our wedding to reflect us, and I had no interest in standard wedding dresses. Or white. I wanted a custom wedding gown. I fell in love with a gorgeous red carpet gown, flowing in sunshine yellow. I wanted something like that. Nancy knew just how to do it. She made a quick few sketches, took my measurements and had me pick up fabric in the color I liked. I chose gorgeous yellow silk from Britex and she began work right away. The ban on gay marriage was lifted. Our friends and family were elated and I felt so lucky to be doing this our way. We had our first fitting and Nancy was beyond accommodating to making major changes to the design. Ones that worked with my non-Hollywood body. At second fitting, the gown was perfect. Gorgeous. Comfortable. I felt gorgeous on my wedding day and have Nancy to thank for it.

I worked with Nancy to create a Western and Vietnamese Ao Dai fusion-style wedding dress. The concept was very important to me for my big day, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted, and I was very happy with how it turned out. After talking to Nancy about my ideas, she sketched out a dress and made suggestions as far as the cut, length, and fabric. I purchased my own fabric elsewhere and brought it to Nancy to work with. She sewed it just a bit smaller than my original measurements to keep me on track for my wedding weight-loss plan (thanks!). She also gave recommendations of how to make me look my best, including sewing in cups to give me a little more "oompf" in my bust, and ideal height for heels. After a few weeks, two fittings, and a couple of adjustments later, I had my final dress. I had SO many compliments and I felt incredibly beautiful on my special day. It was such an easy process, saved me money, and I received a dress that was very me. Nancy is also very friendly, helpful, fair and works quickly. I'd highly recommend an affordable custom-made dress from Nancy over an over-priced, cookie cutter dress from you-know-where.

Additionally, the views at the end of the pier are magical, and you get to view it with songs from the sealions! There are also magic shows at the pier you can watch for free and a large carousel! Pier 39 is 100%, touristy, but it is still festive and fun, whether you're an out-of-towner or a local resident. The only downsides are the prices (because this area is a tourist trap) and the parking. Here are some tricks and tips: Look for coupons for some of the pier activities (ie, coupon books, Groupon, and even on the ads in the local map they give you for free). I've found coupons for the Aquarium By the Bay, restaurants, the mirror maze thingy, and The Flyer. You can also go to the Visitor Center office on the 2nd floor of the pier! Just ask politely for coupons, and they'll usually have something. (They gave me 20% off some nice restaurants last time.) As for parking, be careful with street parking because if you are even a minute late, I swear, you'll find a ticket on your windshield! The city ticket workers are like hawks. There is a Pier 39 parking garage that is the closest but costs a lot. You can look for open parking lots further away, like at hotels, which can be cheaper. If you are able to walk, that may be a good option -- or better yet, take public transportation when you can. That is part of the San Francisco experience! One more tip: if it's your first time there, bring a lock to put at the end of the pier! (See photo) There are definitely a multitude of photo opps here!
