More of a loungey place to go for lunch or for drinks during these short winter days! This restaurant and the float restaurant also located inside of the black rock resort were the only two places that were open that evening in what seemed like the entire city of Ucluelet. Glorious views of the stormy ocean before the night falls. The restaurant was serving the late night food menu which was good enough for us because we just wanted some tasty, fresh seafood. We got Negroni's, clams, cod cakes, seafood soup, and deep fried Mac and cheese. It was a little pricey so it was refreshing for the waitress to advise us to hold off on ordering an additional dish to what we had already ordered and she was 100% right. (If there was one other person then I'd be also recommending you to try the tuna dish.) Fetch is located inside the contemporary Black Rock Oceanfront Resort with a dramatic view of the Pacific Ocean and the black volcanic rocks along the bay and the surge channel. We dined at the restaurant 3 times during our 3-night stay at the resort - dinner for our first evening and breakfast on the following 2 days - and we enjoyed every visit. Dinner at the restaurant for my partner's birthday was an excellent choice. We loved our courses from starters all the way through desserts and coffee. Starters were tuna nicoise and asparagus soup with seared scallop. Tuna nicoise is a genius idea with all the best elements of a salade nicoise without the unnecessary greens. The soft boiled quail egg was an excellent touch. The succulent scallop was paired nicely with the rich base on the soup. For main courses, I had seared scallops (again) & calamari with angel hair pasta and my partner had herb crusted halibut. My scallops were again wonderfully succulent, calamari was light and crispy, and the side pasta was very tasty but not heavy at all. We had a wonderful meal by the window overlooking the ocean We were hoping to see a pod of orcas swimming by but we were not as lucky as the diners the week before. Unimpressive and overpriced menu with lack of imagination from choice of ingredients to types of offerings. Don't know who the chef is, but the limited options in such a rich area of seafood was shocking. Ordered the scallops for appetizer - tiniest scallops ever to be served, lacked flavor and was overdone. The right utensils were not provided at table side- smaller forks for salads and appetizers people. Dinner was ok. There was some confusion when our server informed us that they had, and I quote (this was hilarious and a first at any restaurant I've ever been to) that they "ran out of shrimps and prawns" for the night, and decided not to include any in my seafood linguini that had three types of seafood to begin with. After 5 mins, something gave and they were able to bring some on the side. This time, the scallops were cooked well but honestly my boyfriend cooks better pasta. The servers were great and took good care of us. They followed up a couple of times on my scallops and dinner and comped that terrible appetizer. This 2 star review was really earned by them. To be petty i'll give 2.9 stars (lol) After driving for over four hours from Nanaimo to Ucluelet and getting car sick on the way over, we were looking for some simple food. This restaurant is pretty pricey for the amount of food they give. Honestly not worth it. Slow service and wait time for food, considering the amount of people in the restaurant, it should've been out much quicker. I ordered the Wild Mushroom Risotto. It was extremely bland and had no taste other than the cheese that was grated on top. I had to down it in salt and pepper and even then it was tasteless. My guess is that they didn't season the rice. Me and my dad eventually switched plates because he is used to eating plain congee everyday and the risotto tasted exactly like that so he thought it was okay. My dad ordered the Duck a l'Orange. It came with a polenta cake and greens. It was really good and I was going to order that before but the menu described the dish as dijon mustard tasting and I don't like mustard so I didn't get it. The duck was cooked nicely and the sauce was sweet. The polenta cake was crispy and was great with the duck. My little brother got the mini cheeseburgers from the kids menu. For him it was great and he finished the whole plate which is unusual for him because he's picky on what he eats and this was probably the first time i've ever seen him finish two sliders and a big plate of fries on his own. My mom got the scallops and the oysters. Scallops were okay, some weren't cooked evenly. I didn't try the oysters but my mom and my dad didn't like them and they weren't fresh. For dessert my brother had vanilla ice cream that came with his kids meal and I ordered the Black Rock Sacher Cake which is a dense chocolate cake with apricot and strawberries. Honestly the cake was basically a chocolate cake because i didn't taste any apricot layered in between the layers. Tasted good, but afterwards I felt a little sick from eating it. Honestly, wasn't worth it, but we didn't have anywhere else to eat because we are staying at the hotel. Fabulous sunset dinner Called for a reservation an hour before and they could not have been more accommodating. When we arrived I dropped my wife off at the front door of the Resort and went to park the car. By the time I made it to the lobby the maitre had seated her and come out to the front door where he introduced himself and then escorted me thru the lobby, into the restaurant and to our table which had a beautiful view. I knew we were in for a special experience. Our waitress, Seka, was prompt and explained the specials. I just had to try the ribeye topped with steamed barnacles, yes barnacles!!! The steak was cooked perfectly and I cut it with my fork. The barnacles were tender, and as expected full flavored. I would order them again. The halibut my wife ordered was cooked to perfection and served on a bed of the best sautéed mushrooms we had ever tasted. Not a pairing I would ever pick, but it worked beautifully. We shared an order of creamed spinach which was very good and plenty for two people. Overall the best dinner in a long, long time!!! read more

However the menu and quality of food and service is only mediocre and very disappointing for the dining experience you expect considering this restaurant's location. Staff while friendly and polite, require more support from management to become better, plus management needs to hire more staff. Too many delays on a few fronts. Food half cooked is not what's expected. This restaurant has the ability to do and be more than it is at this moment. It can do better. Microwaves are their friends (raw risotto and substituting ingredients (arugula for spinach) is too common. I would compare this restaurant with Boston Pizza at triple the price. read more

I was there with my family and although we were a large group (and the only ones in the restaurant), the kitchen was slow and sporadic. Not knowing the portions we were expecting, I marveled at the size of the plates. Nouvelle cuisine with high prices to match. I had a beet salad, which was lovely, and a mushroom risotto that was worth leaving home for, the other meals however seemed to,lack substance from the comment of other family members. And although I loved my risotto, I never really understand why chefs insist on serving it solo. Risotto needs to be offset with a tender bite of pork roast every couple of bites. If you didn't already know, fetch is a term used to describe the length of a body of water across which a wind blows: the larger the fetch, the greater energy the sea state. So I automatically loved the name. But the food was good as well. I had braised beef pappardelle and my wife had scallops. Both excellent dishes and we both had an enjoyable evening. I do note from seeing other comments on this and other sites, that service seems to be a critical point. Attracting fine chefs to remote locations is not a problem because you only need one or two. However, wait staff are locals and are not used to serving sophisticated clientele (I personally resent the accusation). So one should probably temper their expectations and go with the local flow. Things might not happen as quickly as you'd like but there simply couldn't be a better place to wait. read more

This restaurant has a beautiful view of the Ocean, and is located in quiet Ucluelet. Pleasant, modern decore, with nice ambient music. The service was warm and wonderful, and the food fantastic: I had breakfast and dinner there. Breakfast was standard fare for a upscale hotel. Dinner, I had wonderful selection of local BC wines: white, red, and dessert. Two See Ya Later Rance, and a Mission Hill. All wonderul years (2007) and priced well. For starter, had a Seared Ahi Tuna dish, which tasted fresh, not frozen or chilled, and had wonderful flavors and small potato side with it. Dinner: a wonderful duck breast with a delicious goat cheese risotto. The lounge in the resort also had a great wine selection, full bar, and tasty tapas (I had a fresh Halibut Ceviche). In addition, if you are a picky eater and not finding what you want on the menu, the kitchen is very accommodating and will whip something up for you in a pinch. Restaurant is small with limited tables so dinner reservations fill up quickly. Service is extremely slow so plan on being there for at least 1.5 hrs. First time at Fetch tonight. Gem oysters were good but muscle not cut, just shucked which we found a bit odd. You shouldn't have to dig them out with a fork. Prime Ribeye was good but sauce was quite salty. Steak was quite thin I thought for a ribeye. King Salmon was great. Tuna Poke was acceptable but nothing special. Overall for the price, not that impressed. Likely won't come back in the future. Staff were very friendly and helpful. read more

For our main had the duck salisbury and the chicken and waffles. The duck was very good, the onions were way too much and the rest was all I can say was eh! We had lunch twice at the Fetch restaurant in the Black Rock Resort, since there's nothing else open in Ucluelet during "storm-watching" season. And both times we were over-charged. The first time we were over-charged (and we paid for) a glass of wine ($15 plus taxes plus gratuity) and the second time the price charged was $4 (plus taxes plus gratuity) more than what was on the wine list. Strangely, both waitresses returned the amounts (roughly calculated) in cash from their tip "jars". To add to this, after lunch we left the restaurant noticing a sign displaying that it was now closed and to please go to the Float Lounge for food/ drink, which is supposed to open at 3 pm. Had the duck breast for dinner - so good! Wife had salmon which was cooked perfectly featuring crispy skin and not overtly salty. Service was very professional. Had breakfast a few times and tasted the eggs benedict, chowder and burger - yes! you can have burger for breakfast! The medium egg was perfectly cooked, chowder was tasty, creamy and filling, burger was good - fries was very tasty, crispy with perfect amount of salt. Service was very professional, even though we were pretty much the only ones around. (we went here one week before xmas). Great view for having breakfast as you can be entranced by the waves crashing violently against the rocks, so waiting for the food didn't seem to take a long time. its probably good for groups as they have quite a bit of tables around, and was pretty quite as we targeted the lowest season possible to visit the island. read more

Just finished a meal at Black Rock Fetch restaurant in Ucluelet BC Bad...just bad. Ribeye steak that my husband ordered was full of gristle. My appetizer oysters were soft and of two varieties despite my questions about the type and size. I would say they were smaller than a quarter. My snow crab oscar was very disappointing as well. The little bit of asparagus that came with it was mixed in with the bernaise sauce, the size of the snow crab was tiny compared to what I regularly buy from Superstore. The creme brûlée that we shared had the one strawberry and one gooseberry frozen into the caramelized top which took some doing to remove. The only thing good about the dinner which cost $200 was the view and the bottle of Cedar Creek Gwertz.($50). Not worth it....our dinner at Norwoods, on the other hand, was fantastic. read more

The venue was pretty scenic, and the full parking lot and restaurant wait indicated this is a popular restaurant with good food. I was hopeful for a nice dinner, especially since this is a little pricier than other restaurants in the area. Unfortunately the wait for a table was not due to a full restaurant (half the tables were empty), but probably lack of wait staff. The meal started ok, and we loved the fresh salad. After that, it was almost an hour wait for the entree to arrive. Once delivered, the scallops were cold (evidently sat in the kitchen too long before serving), and my dish was overdone. Although the restaurant remade the scallops, the long wait knocked off one star. The overdone and cold entrees took off another. Good views made up for it. read more

My husband and I went to Fetch on Saturday morning for brunch. We got there and waited a good 10 minutes before the hostess came by to seat us. In those 10 minutes, all of the servers working saw us standing in the middle of the restaurant waiting to be seated - none of them so much as smiled at us. A few made eye contact but looked away so they didn't have to engage with us. The restaurant was barely half full! Anyways, after we finally got seated, the hostess said our server will be right with us. I'm sure you know how this story ends...we waited another 10 minutes at our table while all the other tables around us were served (servers going by to refill water and coffee, bring extra napkins etc.) all the while we were ignored. We weren't even served water. We got fed up and left before anybody bothered to come by our table. We told the resort front desk how unimpressed we were but I doubt they cared. For a tourism driven town/resort, they sure provide crappy service. read more

The food was good, but the service was very problematic. We ordered a bottle of wine and asked for two appetizer plates to come sequentially. We got both plates at the same time and the wine arrived as we were finishing them. The one waitress was working all the tables, supported by two young men who were supplying water and delivering plates, but there was a real disconnect and she could not attend to every table. Very disappointing, and to add insult to injury, they have a mosquito problem. We killed a half dozen dive bombing us throughout dinner. When we complained, they said that's just part of the deal here, and offered us bug spray to go with our meal. Really? read more

My wife and I landed from Calgary this evening at the Blackrock resort and we booked our first night at Fetch for convenience. Well let me say it was totally worth it. We started with a couple of appies off their new menu. I had the scallops and Jenn had the bang bang prawns. Both were excellent, but we would order the scallops again. They were cooked perfectly and the bed of risotto was fantastic. For mains Jenn had the salmon and I had the sopa seafood bowl - both were simply delightful. We finished off with the lemon cheesecake and the carrot cake. Overall with a bottle of BC Okanagan wine we spent less then we would expect downtown Calgary, and unlike some of the comments below the service was great! We will go back this trip for sure. read more

Worst experience in a restaurant ever; anywhere in the world. Seriously. Without question. Avoid like the plague. We went there because we were told they have the best patio in the area. The fact that nothing was said about food quality should have been a sign on the wall. Although the view from the patio might be the best, unfortunately it's also their one and only redeeming feature. According to Fetch's website food should be divine. I quote: "Fresh ocean air and summer fare allow for divine dining throughout the day". Nothing could be farther from the truth. Upon entering at around 1.30pm (that's still during "the day"), we were told they had a lunch buffet. Not necessarily something I would expect from a place that has an upscale look and claims to provide a divine dining experience, but I've enjoyed fantastic buffets before so we gave it a chance. Turned out the buffet was worse than what you get at a below average hotel. Dried out eggs, dried out cucumbers, low quality tomatoes, one (poor) option for a salad dressing and just your average potatoes, sausages and bacon. To sum it up: extremely uninspired food. The service was equally poor. Maybe the fact that we were obviously not amused didn't help, but we practically got no service and not a single heartfelt apology for the poor experience. To top it off they presented us with a bill in which the gratuity was included, for a group of four! A group of four which did not get any service! The sheer audacity is truly astonishing. It simply felt like an intern was running the kitchen. Whoever's in charge of this restaurant should be instantly fired. Their skills simply aren't up to par for the restaurant business. Given the location and the looks, this place could be something amazing. Currently I can only advise you to not just walk, but run from this place. Your money can be far better spent at different establishments. Shout out to Zoe's bakery for actually apologizing for our experience at this place. read more

After reading some negative reviews on the service, we decided to give it a try anyway, and have to say the service we experienced was night and day from what others have described. Wait staff were attentive, glasses were never empty, food arrived timely and was perfectly prepared. The beef tenderloin was tender, well seasoned and cooked perfectly medium and was accompanied by a pair of delicious potato spring rolls. Someone I believe may have been the floor manager checked several times to ensure everything was satisfactory and at the end he personally thanked us for dining with them. Perhaps they're lifting their game in response to some negative online comments, but we left with a smile on our faces. Also someone else mentioned mosquitoes being a problem not long before our visit but we had no such experience. Maybe the colder weather is scaring them off. It's unfortunate they only open at 5:30 as it would be a perfect spot for a sun downer but it's a bit too late heading in to winter. read more

All I can say is "meh". We made reservations and arrived to find that it wasn't overly busy. Despite reservations we were sat at a table further away from the windows while walk-ins were sat right next to the view. The view is inarguably amazing. Possibly one of the best views you will ever get at any restaurant. But the dining experience was underwhelming. Prices aren't exorbitant but aren't reasonable for what you get. We started off with oysters which were delicious but we received only 4. I understand seasonal availability but we are on a costal town - I've had oysters in Calgary that were equally fresh and tasty, but we would get 6-8 on a plate for the same price as here. We ordered the Black Rock Caesar salad, the halibut and the surf and turf. We were surprised that she didn't ask how the steak should be prepared. Both the halibut and surf and turf came with a Chef's Choice seafood. The halibut was bland and over-cooked and dumped on the plate in pieces. There was supposed to be a mashed potato with it but either they forgot it or the tiny smear on the plate is what was meant to be mashed potatoes - hard to tell. The surf and turf was also bland, with the steak being oddly cut up into pieces and over-done, with the Chef's Choice seafood dumped on top. A small handful of rice was the bed it was served on. The Chef's Choice seafood consisted of two scallops, two shrimp, and one mussel on the halibut. The Surf and turf received a bonus extra mussel. Again, for the price - incredibly disappointing, tiny portions, and underwhelming. For the price I would expect either more food, or spectacular flavor. We received neither. As for service, we never received our Caesar salad. When she asked about our food we expressed disappointment but she ran away before we could get into why. Our waitress did not clear our plates (a bus person did). She asked us if we wanted a dessert menu and we did because we were still very hungry. We decided on two glasses of their lovely after-dinner port choices and two desserts. We sat for almost 1/2 hour, me with an empty wine glass and no waitress to take our order. We finally decided to just get the hell out. We had to go to the waitress station to get our bill and pay. We ended up going to the Cedar Grill and had some appies and beer that were all far more satisfying and delicious than anything we got at this place. read more

Brought here by the stellar views, we weren't expecting much based on the mixed reviews, which were generally accurate. The food was OK based on the prices we paid (we caught the lunch menu, ordered the seafood chowder $10, 4 cheese poutine w/ pulled pork $10 and the salmon wrap $17). The salmon wrap was decent, and the flavour of the seafood chowder was good, and the accompanying foccacia bread was ace but the soup could have been warmer. The poutine didn't seem like it had cheese on it --- it looked and tasted more like a chipotle mayo. This was offset somewhat by the crispness of the fries, which were excellent. Overall, not too bad, but I think there are better options out there. read more

This is a review of dinner. We had a 5:30 reservation and were the second pair into the room. They sat us next to an open door. I asked if they could move us to one of the other 4 empty tables for two and was told no that they were spaced according to reservations. There was no difference except distance from the door. Weird. The food was ok. My wife had some fried rice that had been over cooked and as hard as a rock. They replaced it with a bowl of rice that was better. Overall, not bad but not great. read more

After reading some reviews of restaurants in Ucluelet, we ended up at Fetch! It was a really nice surprise! If hotel restaurants in Vancouver were half this good, I would only eat there! The view is what really puts this place over the top, although our server was also really good - pleasant and super on top of things. We started with the bread basket which came with 3 different types of buns (2 of each) and a DELICIOUS butter of some kind. I would have just eaten the bread over and over again, but I also had ordered their seafood tagliatelle which came with a sizeable portion of shrimp, mussels, and scallops. The creamy sauce was a bit much, but it was very tasty. My boyfriend ordered their surf and turf, and that was probably the best steak we've ever had. Definitely the best steak I've ever had from a hotel restaurant. So perfectly cooked and delightfully seasoned.
