Tuna burger and cod fish and chips
    Stacey S.

What a hidden gem with friendly and energetic service as well as delicious food!! Incredible value for the price, so worth it. Tried a tuna burger and cod fish and chips, tasty and exactly what we were looking for. The ambiance is relaxed and outdoorsy. Overall we really enjoyed our visit, will recommend to friends and will be back next time we are on the coast.

Unbelievably good salmon tacos with bright flavor from the avotillo sauce. The poutine was extremely salty though, and the prices were pretty high.

Grab some hot chowder or gumbo, tacos or fish and chips, well why not everything and head to the beach?! Quick tips and menu items we ordered: - Quicker line up than Tacofino - Cash only though so come prepared - Saw people talking about oysters on here but never saw them on the menu *sad face - Fish Tacos ($15) tempura battered cod, mixed cabbage, avotillo, chipolte mayo topped with salsa crude and lime - Cod 2 piece ($17) with housemade tartar sauce, coleslaw and fries I've heard great things about their Gumbo, but we opted for fish tacos and fish and chips, because it just seems like the thing to do! It was about $40~ dollars for 3 tacos and 2 piece fish and chips and a kombucha but the quality of our food was great and tasty. Portion size good.

Great fish and chips. I had the 1 piece cod and fries. Very flavorful and more than enough food for dinner. The fish was fried nicely - not greasy and the fish was still flaky. The complimentary cucumber and lemon water is a nice touch. Overall, a great place for dinner.

Beware of the crows! haha. As a fan of oysters I had to see what the deal was with the fried oysters & chips. Very LARGE oysters, about 5 pieces with yummy fries. Oysters were cooked great, quite crispy. Coleslaw was alright. The tartar sauce with the regular cod fish & chips I found was better, taste wise. There wasn't really much drink selection i.e. cola etc. The seating is outdoors with semi covered picnic tables. The crows in the parking lot here do lurk so dont leave your food unattended!

Gumbo & Chowder. Worth trying both!

Not fancy & good value for the flavor, ingredients and portion size. Lots of locals. Food is pickup or dine in this cute outdoor picnic tabled grotto (with umbrellas). The guys who run it have a fun, upbeat vibe that makes this place feel legit. Gumbo & clam chowder are both tasty and complement each other. Gumbo is full-bodied, like a red wine; chowder is lighter like white. When in doubt, get 'em both! $6 half cup or $11 full. I splurged & got full cups and it's too much for this hungry man! (Maybe do 1.5 cups if you're hungry)

2-piece Salmon fish & chips (right) and Cod fish & chips (left)

I ordered their Cod and Salmon fish & chips. Both were Panko breaded & fried with large portions. Both fishes were still moist but the salmon was my favourite! The fillet was beautiful with even fatty layers. The crunchy panko coating complimented the salmon fish the best. I prefer the traditional flour coating that other places (like Red Fish Blue Fish in Victoria, BC) do for the cod better. Love the green apple slaw. Generous with 2 small containers of tar tar sauce. The fries were crispy and golden with a salty seasoning. On the side of the ordering window, there's 2 jugs of cucumber or lemon infused water that you can help yourself to, a hand wash station ready, and a condiment & utensils tray. There's lots of sunny & shaded seating available. Make sure you keep you receipt to get 10% off at chocolate tofino !

Fried Oyster Burger ($15), Fish 'n' Chips ($23 for 3 pcs), and Chowder ($11 for full)

The hostess was was very nice and gave us a table with a view (which I'm sure would have been striking if it hadn't been dark unfortunately). Still, we ordered prawns and a 1/2 dozen oysters to start off with a bottle of Blue Mountain Sauvignon Blanc. (i wasn't nervous about the oysters as the north pacific is clean for raising them). For dinner my partner opted for the chicken platter that she really enjoyed; lots of fresh components and interesting small side portions. I had the scallops and pork belly that I have never had before, but would absolutely have again here. Add this restaurant to your list whether staying in the lodge or not. I agree reservations are a good idea unless you plan to go in an off time.

We came for dinner and the view of Cox Bay is unbelievable! We got to watch the sunset and it was incredible. Too bad they don't have an outdoor patio but considering the rain, wind, and storm weather in Tofino, there's probably a reason why. Decor and ambiance is cozy, elegant, airy, and timeless elegance. Service here is attentive and warm. We ordered the house made bread to start (small comes with 6 pieces) with sourdough and charred leek butter. This was really homey and comforting. I ordered the Shrimp Carbonara for my entree and my partner got the Crispy Chicken sandwich. The shrimp carbonara take on the dish is served with udon noodles, shrimp, smoked black cod, butternut squash and topped with soft egg in a miso butter, garlic, chili, and parmesan sauce. The dish was hearty, filling, flavourful, yet not too heavy. It really hit the spot and I enjoyed it quite a bit. My partner enjoyed his huge Crispy Chicken sandwich and was thrilled that they had enough hot sauce on the chicken for some kick. Come for the views, food, or service - you can't go wrong. They also currently have a special multi-course for under $50/person from 5pm to 6pm.

While we didn't get a dining room table, the bar seating turned out to be a great experience. The bartender was friendly, welcoming, and very knowledgeable. The burger had the perfect flavour, and the fries were a great match. It was a satisfying meal after exploring Tofino. Tofino is a popular tourist destination, reservations are highly recommended if you want a specific dinner time and a comfortable dining room seat. Walk-ins are still accepted, but you may need to wait for a table or dine later in the evening, sometimes after 8pm. Overall, Shelter is a highly recommended stop in Tofino. Only one thing- This place absolutely needs more review!…read more They have some of the mean bowls and we ended up trying two of them. Salmon and Kale, Pachamama bowl. 5/5. The squash, beetroot and kale were steaming hot from Pachamama. Thanks for adding shaved Brussels sprouts. That's my new favorite now. Salmon was cooked to perfection. Chips and Salsa didn't feel freshly made but still were surprisingly perfect that our kid gobbled it all. Just right seasoning ( which have been hit and miss in all other places for last couple of days) We also had vanilla and affogato. Parking- no dedicated parking lot. Street parking or public parking is the only option. Place is open till late and had definitely had lot of late nighters drinking. We ordered one drink - hibiscus margarita. It was well made. The service was quick and we saw dishes going out one after another too. The playlist this evening was the best part of our dinner! We were vibing at the songs loved by us 80s/90s kids. Thanks for playing all those songs I haven't listened in two decades. Only missing was a little space to shake our legs and dance away. Hope I get to return to try out more. If you are looking for restaurants in Tofino, please do stop by! I recommend it as a must try while you are here. P.S. I took the zoomed in photo of the bowls to give it a try in my own kitchen
