Unbelievable that there are still merchants this AWESOME! I called Fernando at 11am from another smog check merchant which started to give me some mumbo jumbo about how old the vehicle was and it would cost more to perform the check. It took me 10 minutes to drive to Fernando's, 5 seconds to be greeted by Fernando himself. He was able to get right to my vehicle as he promised, and I was on my home with a smog certificate for my 93 Explorer in about 45 minutes. I am an independent merchant in Santa Barbara also. It's normally pretty annoying having to get a smog check. It's like, come on DMV just take my renewal payment and leave me alone for 12 months. However, Fernando, the owner, is so friendly and his service is so quick that it doesn't even bother me anymore. Last week I called the shop and happened to reach Fernando himself. I asked for a smog appointment during my lunch hour that same day and was pleased to hear that not only could he accommodate me, he stated that I might be done within about fifteen minutes so that I could also grab some lunch before returning to work. Well, all that he promised came true. His service was quick and efficient, and after paying and receiving my smog certificate, I popped in to Taco Bell down the street and had enough time to even sit down and eat there before going back to work a couple of miles away. Ok... smog checks can be an annoyance, but here in California we set the standards for emission control and do enjoy the benefits of greatly improved air quality, so every other year we are going to have to employ the services of a smog shop. I don't expect getting a smog check to be fun, but Fernando made the experience a pleasure. Very personable and professional service, I called on a Monday afternoon and he was able to do the inspection without a wait. Highly recommend! Based on the reviews here, I took my truck to this place. Though it's in a row of light industrial time-worn building across from the airport, and behind an auto shop, it's not really that hard to find if you read the signs. The street is only half a block long. The owner operator was cheerful, fast, and knowledgeable. I was on a short lunch break. He listened to my concern, and turned me around very quickly. In fact, he was able to do another car at the same time, and as I watched, I noticed that he was using the computer - reading points to do set up on the other car, so both of us were done very quickly. Fernando is the only mechanic I trust. I know very little to nothing about cars, but Fernando explains everything in the best way possible. I once brought my car to him to diagnose a noise that my car was making whenever I would hit the brakes - brakes were not the issue. Fernando diagnosed the problem & fixed it promptly. I even remember telling him "do what you need to do, I trust your judgement," which apparently you're not supposed to say to a mechanic. But honestly, I wholeheartedly trust Fernando.
